Cardinals bring back rookie DL Jacob Slade to practice squad

With another injury on the defensive line, the Cardinals bring back one of heir undrafted rookies to the practice squad.

The Arizona Cardinals have depth issues on the defensive line and, as a result, have added one to the practice squad.

The team announced Tuesday that receiver Daniel Arias was released from the practice squad and that defensive lineman Jacob Slade was added.

Slade was signed as an undrafted rookie by Arizona out of Michigan State this offseason and spent the whole offseason and preseason with the team. He was part of the team’s final cuts and was not initially w

L.J. Collier was placed on injured reserve. Leki Fotu has a shoulder injury that kept him out of Sunday’s game. Carlos Watkins suffered a biceps injury on Sunday.

Last week, the Cardinals elevated Eric Banks from the practice squad to play on Sunday.

Slade will give them another body to have for practice at least.

Undrafted rookies with legit chance of making team for Cardinals

As we approach training camp, these are the undrafted players to keep an eye on because of numbers at different positions on the roster.

Because the Arizona Cardinals are thin on established experience in the NFL at many positions, this year’s undrafted rookie class has players with a real chance of making the roster. Simply because there are questions of depth, they could be able to make a contribution and live out their NFL dream despite going undrafted.

Who are those players to watch?

Cardinals gave signing bonuses, salary guarantees to 9 undrafted rookies

Of the 10 undrafted rookies the Cardinals initially signed, nine got signing bonuses and seven get salary guarantees.

The Arizona Cardinals signed undrafted rookie free agents following the NFL draft. Originally, it appeared that only two players got any signing bonus or guaranteed money in their salaries.

It took a while for the final contract numbers to come in, but now Over the Cap shows that nine of the 10 undrafted rookies the Cardinals signed initially got at least a signing bonus and some received salary guarantees for 2023.

Cardinals guaranteed $200K for UDFA DL Jacob Slade

Slade, an undrafted rookie, got more guarantees in his contract with the Cardinals than sixth-round pick Dante Stills.

The Arizona Cardinals signed 10 undrafted rookie free agents after the conclusion of the NFL draft. One player they signed was a particular priority.

That was defensive lineman Jacob Slade, out of Michigan State.

How do we know he was a priority? Money.

In signing his three-year contract, the Cardinals gave him a $20,000 signing bonus and guaranteed $180,000 of his $750,000 2023 salary.

They only gave guarantees to two of their undrafted rookie free agents. The other, safety Kendell Brooks, Slade’s college teammate, was given $80,000 in total guarantees.

The guaranteed money doesn’t guarantee Slade a spot on their 53-man roster, but it does show they wanted him.

By comparison, Slade got more guarantees than even sixth-round pick Dante Stills. Stills does not have any salary guarantees in his rookie contract and his signing bonus was more than $133,000.

As the offseason progresses and we get to training camp, keep an eye on Slade.

Miller released an updated NFL mock draft version on Sunday, which saw a pair of Spartans getting selected. Wide receiver Jayden Reed went in the third round to Cleveland, and Miller has Slade going as the draft’s final pick (No. 259 overall) to the Houston Texans.

Slade battled injuries this past year and was able to only play in eight games for Michigan State. But he was impactful when he was on the field, recording 20 tackles with 3.5 for loss.
