Social media reacts to the report that Zac Alley will be Oklahoma’s next defensive coordinator

The Oklahoma Sooners appear set to hire Zac Alley as their next defensive coordinator and here’s how social media reacted.

The Oklahoma Sooners made news on Thursday when it was announced they had mutually agreed to part ways with defensive coordinator Ted Roof. But it didn’t take long for news to surface that the Sooners have found their replacement.

According to a report from 247Sports Matt Zenitz, the Sooners are expected to hire Jacksonville State defensive coordinator Zac Alley.

Alley spent the last two years with the Gamecocks, helping them win nine games in their first season at the FBS level. He’s also spent time with Louisiana-Monroe and Boise State. He also spent time with Brent Venables as a student and grad assistant at Clemson.

It’s yet to be officially announced, but based on reports from several outlets, the Sooners have their next defensive coordinator in Zac Alley.

Here’s how social media reacted.

Jacksonville State defeats Louisiana in last-minute comeback to take R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl

The Gamecocks trailed Louisiana by seven points with two minutes left, but a late touchdown and an overtime field goal saved the game.

Jacksonville State won the R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl in stunning fashion on Saturday, defeating Louisiana 34-31 in overtime after a late touchdown.

The Gamecocks and Ragin’ Cajuns traded touchdowns early, but it felt more like Jacksonville State versus the Louisiana cornerback Jalen Clark. Clark returned a fumble for a touchdown on the game’s opening drive. After a Gamecocks touchdown tied the game, he intercepted a pass from quarterback Zion Webb and ran it back for his second score of the first half.

Despite the early offensive mistakes, Jacksonville State continued to bounce back. They scored a touchdown on the ensuing drive after Clark’s pick-six, and 10 third-quarter points nudged the Gamecocks ahead again.

The game stood tied at 24 in the final six minutes before Louisiana’s defense came through again. Cajuns defensive back Tyree Skipper jumped in front of a Gamecocks pass and raced 33 yards to the end zone. With 5:32 left in the game, it looked like Louisiana might have found the game-winning score.

After trading punts, the Jacksonville State offense found life. The Gamecocks marched 70 yards on just eight plays, capped off by an 18-yard pass from Webb to wide receiver Perry Carter for the game-tying touchdown inside the last two minutes.

After the Cajuns missed a field goal on their first overtime possession, Jacksonville State kicker Garrison Rippa knocked a 27-yard field goal through the uprights for the walk-off win.

A dumb NCAA rule is the reason Bellarmine won’t make March Madness despite winning the ASUN tourney

A weird rule is keeping the Knights from the Big Dance.

The Bellarmine Knights defeated Jacksonville University in the ASUN Conference championship game, 77-72. They won’t, however, be going to the NCAA tournament thanks to a weird rule. Bellarmine made the jump to Division I on July 1 of 2020, moving all 22 varsity programs up from the lower division.

Since the men’s basketball team is within the four-year window of making the change up to D1, the Knights are not eligible for postseason play in the NCAA tournament this year.

Bellarmine stunned Liberty in the ASUN semifinals, and Jacksonville upset top-seeded Jacksonville State to set up Tuesday night’s title game. The Knights held off a late push by the Dolphins with strong free throw shooting, but they won’t get to celebrate like we’d all hope.

In the weirdest twist possible, the representative for the ASUN isn’t even Jacksonville. It’s Jacksonville State. Since the Dolphins fell in the championship to an ineligible team, the Gamecocks — which won the ASUN regular season — will take the automatic bid to the NCAA tournament. Bellarmine will finish with 20 wins at 20-13 overall in just their second D1 season.

According to the ESPN2 broadcast, they do get to claim the title and trophy that comes with being ASUN champs, just not the coveted auto-bid.

Come on, NCAA. Let Bellarmine dance.

Jacksonville State floors Florida State on Hail Mary

Jacksonville State shocks Florida State on Hail Mary to end the game

Florida State football isn’t close to what it used to be. Still, there is no excuse for what happened Saturday against Jacksonville State in Tallahassee.

The Seminoles, who lost Sunday to Notre Dame in overtime, were up three points against the Gamecocks, who are based in Alabama not the Sunshine State.

The fact Florida State only had a three-point lead over Jacksonville State after 59 minutes and 54 seconds is troubling. The Seminoles came into their home game a 27-point favorite.

What happened next is stunning:

The final play of the game was good for 59 yards and it went from quarterback Zerrick Cooper to Damond Philyaw-Johnson to give the Gamecocks a 20-17 victory.

Melina Myers-USA TODAY Sports

The Gamecocks were full of themselves after the upset, planting their flag on the Seminole logo at Doak Campbell Stadium.

To give you an idea of how bad a loss this is, Jacksonville State came into the game 0-1, having lost its opener to UAB, 31-0.

UAB was shredded by Georgia 56-7 on Saturday in Athens.

Florida State had beaten Jacksonville State, 41-24, in its season opener in 2020. The Gamecocks led 24-21 in that one before the Seminoles scored the final 20 points.
