2023 Florida Football Season Preview: Running Backs

Is it finally Nay’Quan Wright’s time to shine at Florida or will the Louisiana transfer who followed his coach win out the starting running back job?

The quarterback controversy in Gainesville during the 2021 season may have overshadowed how badly the running back room was handled, but there’s hope [autotag]Billy Napier[/autotag] and position coach [autotag]Jabbar Juluke[/autotag] will provide the right template for success on the ground in their first season at Florida.

Unfortunately, the team lost its top two running backs from a year ago to the NFL. [autotag]Dameon Pierce[/autotag], who didn’t hit the 10-carry mark in a game until after [autotag]Dan Mullen[/autotag] was fired, now looks like a legitimate part of the Houston Texans‘ backfield, and [autotag]Malik Davis[/autotag] recently rushed for 51 yards on eight carries in a preseason game for the Dallas Cowboys as an undrafted free agent. Losing both to the pros left just [autotag]Nay’Quan Wright[/autotag] on the roster with a decent amount of SEC experience under his belt.

Napier brought over one of his players, [autotag]Montrell Johnson[/autotag], from Louisiana through the transfer portal and there’s still former five-star [autotag]Lorenzo Lingard[/autotag] to consider. All three should see carries throughout the season, and there’s even a chance [autotag]Trevor Etienne[/autotag] sees some action as a true freshman.

In 2021, Napier’s Louisiana team scored 34 of its 53 offensive touchdowns on the ground and three backs broke the 500-yard mark — two eclipsing 800 yards. A similar mix could be in store for his first year at Florida, and at least Johnson has played in Napier’s system before.

Here’s a look at all eight running backs listed on the 2022 Florida Gators’ fall roster.

Two Florida coaches in top 15 of 247Sports’ recruiter rankings

Florida’s coaching staff has been on a roll lately, and much of it is thanks to two men in particular. 247Sports has them in their top 15.

When [autotag]Billy Napier[/autotag] assembled his staff at the University of Florida, he said that he wanted to prioritize recruiting. Twenty commitments into the class of 2023 and one class of 2024 four-star verbally pledge to the Orange and Blue, it’s safe to say that Napier was successful, and the numbers back it up.

Co-defensive coordinator and defensive line coach [autotag]Sean Spencer[/autotag] is ranked No. 7 on the 247Sports 2023 football recruiter rankings, and [autotag]Keary Colbert[/autotag] is ranked No. 11, which is good for the second-highest placement of any wide receivers coach on the list.

Spencer has been the primary recruiter on five of Florida’s commitments and has played a secondary role in the recruitment of two others. He’s directly responsible for the additions of No. 70 [autotag]Kelby Collins[/autotag], No. 145 [autotag]Will Norman[/autotag], No. 205 [autotag]Isaiah Nixon[/autotag], No. 218 [autotag]Kamran James[/autotag] and four-star [autotag]Gavin Hill[/autotag]. Despite the battery of four-stars committed to Florida thanks to Spencer, he ranks fourth among defensive line recruiters in the country. Clemson‘s Nick Eason, Notre Dame‘s Al Washington and Alabama‘s Freddie Roach are all ranked above Spencer in ascending order.

Still, it’s clear that coach Chaos’ stint in the NFL paid off, and he’s once again at the top of the recruiting game. Florida has the potential to bring in the strongest defensive line classes in the upcoming cycle, assuming all commitments put pen to paper during one of the signing periods.

Colbert has been the primary on five recruits as well, all of whom will play receiver for UF. No. 78 [autotag]Aidan Mizell[/autotag] leads the group and should be paired with No. 142 [autotag]Eugene Wilson III[/autotag] to do some damage. Four-stars [autotag]Andy Jean[/autotag] and [autotag]Creed Whittemore[/autotag] round out the blue-chip names in the class and three-star [autotag]Tyree Patterson[/autotag] adds some depth to the class. And there’s potential to add more receivers to the group.

The only other receivers coach ranked higher by 247Sports is Ohio State‘s Brian Hartline, who has brought in four recruits that average a 96.48 grade. The next receivers coach on the list is Texas’ Brennan Marion at No. 20 and three commits under his belt.

Florida’s other co-defensive coordinator and safeties coach [autotag]Patrick Toney[/autotag] is ranked No. 31 and the only other Gator inside the top 100. Cornerbacks coach [autotag]Corey Raymond[/autotag] should be next to break that threshold if he can add one of his high-profile targets. Currently ranked No. 101, adding either four-star [autotag]Dijon Johnson[/autotag] or five-star [autotag]Cormani McClain[/autotag] should do the trick for Raymond.

Outside linebackers coach [autotag]Mike Peterson[/autotag] is ranked No. 111, offensive coordinator and offense line coach [autotag]Rob Sale[/autotag] is ranked No. 188, inside linebacker coach [autotag]Jay Bateman[/autotag] is No. 190, tight ends coach [autotag]William Peagler[/autotag] is No. 240 and running backs coach [autotag]Jabbar Juluke[/autotag] rounds out the group at No. 338 on the list. Assistant offensive line coach [autotag]Darnell Stapleton[/autotag] received secondary credits for four commitments and ranks No. 259 as well.

Florida re-offers this 4-star in-state 2024 running back

The Gators are looking at one of the top running backs in the class of 2024 closely. Billy Napier’s staff re-offered four-star Anthony Carrier recently.

Four-star running back [autotag]Anthony Carrie[/autotag] was recently re-offered by the Florida Gators’ new coaching staff, according to Gators Online.

The Carrollwood Day (Tampa, Florida) recruit impressed coaches during the a July camp, which he partially participated in due to the upcoming season. He and teammate [autotag]Bredell Richardson[/autotag], a four-star wide receiver ranked No. 77 overall in the class, performed individual drills for coaches and both picked up offers for the second time.

“I like the new staff,” Carrie said. “I’m still trying to get a feel for them. Before me and Bredell went up there, Florida was not recruiting us as hard as the last staff was, so we are trying to get a feel for them. It was nice getting around them and getting coached by them.”

One of the coaches Carrie got to work with closely is running backs coach [autotag]Jabbar Juluke[/autotag]. The two shared a moment after a drill went wrong. Carrie, who considers himself an elite running back, decided to delay a route after seeing the other recruits run straight to the position. His rationale was that a linebacker would be able to read it easily and in-game he’d be waiting longer to make his cut.

That threw Juluke off and the two didn’t connect, but Carrie quickly apologized and explained the thought process. Juluke replied with “be you,” and seemed to realize that Carrie has a better understanding of the position than other kids at his level. That’s the kind of moment that makes a coach and player want to work with each other, and Carrie’s confident he proved himself at the camp.

But he’s still taking things slow and not committing a spot in his top 10 to the orange and blue until he’s sure of things. That will take a bit more effort on UF’s side. He plans to visit for one game in the fall, but his schedule is far from finalized.

“I’m not sure yet. I’m kind of just getting a feel for them,” Carrie said. “Before the new staff came, they were definitely top 10, but they have to earn to be top 10 now. I have to see how they do this year on the field; I got to see how the culture is and I want to see them recruit me a little bit more.”

Carrie is ranked No. 100 overall on the On3 consensus and is No. 5 among running backs. He rushed for over 1,000 yards and scored 20 touchdowns as a sophomore.

Trevor Etienne looks to forge his own path at Florida

A little sibling rivalry never hurt anyone, but Trevor Etienne is looking to make his own name at UF.

There’s a good chance that when Florida signed four-star running back [autotag]Trevor Etienne[/autotag] in February most of the country was checking to see if he was related to former Clemson star and now Jacksonville Jaguars running back Travis Etienne.

When a quick Google search reveals the Etiennes indeed share a bloodline, and the immediate follow-up is something along the lines of “is he going to be as good or better than his brother?”

That’s not a new question for the younger of the siblings, according to a recent piece from The Athletic. Trevor grew up in Travis’ shadow, and the latter believes it has benefited him enough to give him a leg up on most other players at his level.

“It accelerated his process, because he knew what having success looked like,” said Travis. “He knew what it took, knew what he needed to do. He’s only 18 now, but the way he carries himself is far beyond his years.”

Of course, Trevor is his own person and that’s why he opted not to follow his older brother’s path to Clemson. Donnetta Etienne, the matriarch of the family, provided some insight on the decision to go with Florida over other programs.

“We knew Clemson had good people, but Trevor didn’t want to travel behind his brother,” Donnetta said. “He wants his own legacy, which we understand. Travis paved his way there, and so Trevor needed to pave his own way at his own school.”

[autotag]Greg Knox[/autotag], Florida’s last running backs coach, earned Trevor’s silent commitment in October. [autotag]Dan Mullen[/autotag], and Knox as well as the rest of the staff, were let go in November, but Etienne didn’t back off the commitment. Playing just 71 miles away from his brother, and giving the recently relocated family a chance to see both sons in action, was too good to pass up.

Billy Napier’s addition of [autotag]Jabbar Juluke[/autotag], who recruited Travis at LSU and Trevor at Texas Tech and Louisiana, further convinced the family Florida was the right landing spot for him.

Trevor got to Gainesville in May and has since become a leader among the freshmen on the team. He actively recruits players to join the program and has a shot to break into a rotation of relatively inexperienced running backs.

Will Etienne end up breaking school records as his brother did at Clemson? That remains to be seen, but he has enough potential to be something special at Florida. His brother’s success showed him what it takes to be a campus legend, and now he’s using that knowledge to start his college career on the right foot.

Gators offer this coveted 2024 4-star running back after camp

Tovani Mizell received an offer from the Gators after working with the Florida coaching staff on campus Wednesday.

Despite preparations for this weekend’s massive recruiting events underway, [autotag]Billy Napier[/autotag] and his staff are staying busy.

2024 four-star running back [autotag]Tovani Mizell[/autotag] received an offer from the Orange and Blue on Wednesday after participating in a camp session on campus. Playing his high school ball at DeMatha Catholic in Maryland, Mizell was born and raised in South Florida before moving to the DMV this summer.

The state of Florida is clearly still on “Boogeyman’s” mind. According to On3′ Recruiting Prediction Machine, Florida’s offer has skyrocketed the Gators to the 2nd best odds to land Mizell at 28.4%. UCF, the only other school to receive a visit in 2022, is ahead with a 32.5% chance.

The No. 8 ranked running back in the 2024 class spent his day working with Florida RBs coach [autotag]Jabbar Juluke[/autotag], telling On3’s Corey Bender he was impressed with Juluke and with Napier’s ability to produce running backs. Mizell’s day with the coaching staff clearly made an impact, telling Bender that the Gators are near the top of his list and that he is eager to return and experience The Swamp in person.

Along with the Gators, Mizell holds offers from Alabama, Georgia, USC, Tennessee, Texas A&M, Oklahoma, Oregon, Michigan State, UCF, and many more.

4-star offensive tackle moves Swamp visit date to big weekend

The Gators will have to wait a couple of extra days before getting this big man on campus.

A tidal wave of high school recruits is closing in on Gainesville this weekend for Florida football’s annual Friday Night Lights and team cookout. The bags are packed, the trips are booked and the top prep prospects from around the country have begun to descend upon the Swamp in the days leading up to the big events.

However, there has been a bit of a change in plans for four-star offensive tackle [autotag]Tyree Adams[/autotag] out of New Orleans (Louisiana) St. Augustine. The 6-foot-5-inch, 285-pound trench warrior was originally scheduled to stop by campus on Wednesday and Thursday of this week for his third visit with the team, but instead, has pushed back his dates to July 30 and 31 to squeeze in a visit with the LSU Tigers and Ole Miss Rebels beforehand.

He will also be back to watch the Gators’ season-opener at home against the Utah Utes on September 3.

Florida and the two aforementioned schools account for three of Adams’ top four preferred destinations, with the Georgia Bulldogs also in the mix. The Orange and Blue have a bit of an edge on the sidelines as running backs coach [autotag]Jabbar Juluke[/autotag] brings in strong ties from his home in the bayou.

“Coach Juluke actually coached my head coach,” he told 247Sports. “He coached him and a few of my assistant coaches at my school. We have an amazing relationship with coach Juluke. Coming from Louisiana, he understands.”

Adams is currently ranked No. 196 overall and No. 20 in his class nationally according to the 247Sports composite, while the On3 consensus has him at Nos. 209 and 17, respectively. LSU holds the lone crystal ball prediction from 247Sports while dominating the On3 Recruiting Prediction Machine’s numbers with a 91.3% chance of signing him; the Gators are second at 2.8%.

2024 FSU running back commit gets offer from Florida staff

The Gators are looking to poach this top 2024 wide running back target from the ‘Noles.

Billy Napier and his staff are continuing to build relationships with players, despite their commitment status.

[autotag]Kameron Davis[/autotag], a 2024 RB committed to Florida State, was recently offered by Napier after completing a workout with Gators associate head coach [autotag]Jabbar Juluke[/autotag]. Shortly before the dead period, the No. 2 running back in the 2024 class, according to the On3 consensus, was in Gainesville on a college tour where he came away impressed by the atmosphere around the university and Hogtown itself.

The 5-foot-9-inch, 205-pound Albany, Georgia, native isn’t short of suitors, though. Despite being committed to Florida State, programs including Alabama, Georgia, Tennessee, Ohio State, Texas A&M, Miami and Oregon are attempting to test the strength of Davis’ nearly year and a half commitment to the ‘Noles.

It’ll be interesting to see if Napier can flip another high-profile recruit since taking over as Florida’s head coach. Back in December, he flipped 2022 four-star safety [autotag]Devin Moore[/autotag] from Notre Dame on signing day and earlier this month managed to flip 2023 four-star quarterback [autotag]Markus Stokes[/autotag] from Penn State.

Those players were vital for Napier’s reputation on the recruiting trail, but flipping a top running back from your biggest in-state rival who has been committed for over a year? Well, that would be the reverse Dalvin Cook.

Florida OL commit content with Gators, shuts down recruitment

Florida picked up a commitment from IMG Academy offensive lineman Knijeah Harris back in May and he’s 100% locked in.

Despite what many might expect, the recruiting process rarely ends for high-profile targets once they’ve committed. Once a letter of intent is signed is typically when the university and coaches can take a breath of relief, but Florida offensive line commit [autotag]Knijeah Harris[/autotag] isn’t interested in dragging out the process.

Speaking with On3’s Jeremy Johnson, Harris indicated that he’s fully bought in with the Gators and has no plans to test the waters, so to speak. That’s very good news for Florida after missing out on five-star tackle [autotag]Francis Mauigoa[/autotag] to Miami and four-star tackle Lucas Simmons to Florida State. As [autotag]Billy Napier[/autotag] looks to fill out his offensive line, he can rest assured that Harris will be a part of it.

“Everything is perfect at Florida from the coaches to the campus to the facilities,” Harris said. “Coach Napier’s the man with the plan. You talk with him, you sit down with him, you see how detailed he is and you see he has everything planned out.”

It’s not just Napier who convinced Harris that Gainesville is where he is supposed to be. Offensive coordinator [autotag]Rob Sale[/autotag], offensive line coach [autotag]Darnell Stapleton[/autotag], running backs coach [autotag]Jabbar Juluke[/autotag] and defensive analyst [autotag]Jamar Chaney[/autotag] kept in regular contact with the IMG Academy recruit until he committed and beyond.

As Florida continues putting together its recruiting class for 2023, expect Harris to be one of the most vocal commits in the bunch. He loves being a Gator, and as he puts it, he’s “locked in” with the Orange and Blue.

Gators host pair of recruits on mid-week official visits

The mid-week official visits went well for Florida a week ago, so why not run it back this week?

After hosting two elite talents last week on mid-week official visits, the Florida Gators have another duo in town. Four-star offensive lineman [autotag]Lucas Simmons[/autotag] and three-star linebacker [autotag]Samuel Omosigho[/autotag] arrived in Gainesville on Monday, according to 247Sports.

Simmons has warmed up to the Gators in recent months, but USC is considered the leader in his recruitment. Tennessee and Oklahoma State have also hosted him on official visits, and Florida State will get him over the weekend.

Despite playing high school ball in the state of Florida, Simmons is an international player from Sweden who moved to the States in 2021. That means the home state pitch won’t be as effective on him, but he does have two Florida schools in the mix a month or two out from his expected decision date.

Omosigho is a Texas-based recruit that’s actually rated four stars by 247Sports but composite rankings agree that he’s closer to the three-star range. Florida started talking with him in the spring and extended an offer in April. Personnel analyst Joe Hamilton played a key role in getting the ball moving with Omosigho and running backs coach [autotag]Jabbar Juluke[/autotag] stopped by his school in spring. Now he’ll get to see Florida’s campus in person and meet the staff in its entirety.

Ranked No. 412 overall in the class of 2023 on the 247Sports composite, Omosigho isn’t short on Power Five offers. Auburn, Michigan and Oklahoma are just three of his offers, and the Sooners are making a strong push for him.

Last week’s visits went well, and five-stars can be a bit harder to please than other recruits. We’ll have to wait and see what kind of boost Florida gets in these two races after they leave town.

This top-3 2023 running back recruit just scheduled another UF visit

Hopefully Cedric Baxter Jr likes what he sees in Gainesville.

Head coach [autotag]Billy Napier[/autotag] and his staff have a huge hill to climb when it comes to getting Florida football’s recruiting back on track but nobody can doubt that the program is pushing hard for the best prep prospects in the nation. Among the blue-chippers the Gators are vying for during Napier’s debut is four-star running back [autotag]Cedric Baxter Jr[/autotag]. out of Orlando (Florida) Edgewater, who has not been a stranger to the university’s campus.

The 6-foot-1-inch, 215-pound ball-carrier has made several trips up to Gainesville during his recruitment and recently decided to drop in for an unofficial visit this weekend, according to Swamp247. There appears to be a growing mutual fondness between the prep prospect and the Gators as running backs coach [autotag]Jabbar Juluke[/autotag]’s philosophies seem to jibe well with the in-state target.

“With Florida, I like the way they use their running backs,” Baxter told Swamp247. “They are going to use at least three back a game and they are all going to get at least 10 carries, minimum. That saves your body for the next level. So, it’s that and then I feel like a priority for them.”

The four other schools vying for the coveted running back are the Alabama Crimson Tide, Miami Hurricanes, Texas Longhorns and Texas A&M Aggies. He has only used one of his official visits so far, stopping in Austin to see the Longhorns on June 10 and is not expected to make any more in the near future, likely saving them for after the fall football season.

Baxter is currently ranked No. 46 overall and No. 3 nationally at his position according to the 247Sports composite, while the On3 consensus him at Nos. 43 and 3, respectively. On3’s Recruiting Prediction Machine currently has Florida out in front of the other suitors with a 54% chance of signing him, while Texas and Miami follow at 13% and 10.5%, respectively.
