Texas forward Timmy Allen discusses team-first mentality

Texas basketball players don’t care who gets the credit as they move toward their goals.

It’s all about the team for Texas basketball players heading into the NCAA Tournament. These Longhorns aren’t concerned so much with who makes the game-deciding play as they are that the team wins.

Texas forward Timmy Allen said as much in his media availability ahead of the NCAA Tournament.

It’s just amazing to watch them… the camaraderie we have, the selflessness and how we’re not worried about who gets it done. It’s just about getting it done.

Allen’s team-first mentality is apparent to anyone who saw the Big 12 Tournament in Kansas City. Multiple times the camera panned to Allen rooting on his team to a Big 12 Tournament Championship. Now he’ll get to make an impact on the court.

What makes Texas so dangerous is its ability to make baskets through multiple avenues. Dylan Disu has seemingly been automatic at times in mid-range baskets. Sir’Jabari Rice has been the Longhorns most reliable three-point shooter in awhile. Allen and Marcus Carr add in baskets in their own variety of ways.

Texas will lean on its four-headed monster for baskets as it makes a push for a deep tournament run.

Texas guard Sir’Jabari Rice wins National Sixth Man of the Year

Sir’Jabari Rice was named College Hoops Today’s Sixth Man of the Year.

Texas guard Sir’Jabari Rice willed the Longhorns to a blowout victory against Kansas on Saturday. It was simply another day on the job for Rice.

It appears national media has taken notice of the transfer’s role on the Texas basketball team. On Sunday, we learned the shot making guard was recognized as the nation’s top sixth man for the 2023 season according to College Hoops Today.

Rice earning the nomination was a no-brainer for college basketball media. Arguably, the New Mexico State transfer has become the best scorer and most valuable player on the team alongside Marcus Carr.

On the year, Rice is shooting 38% from three while averaging just under 13 points per game. His role has increased over the Big 12 stretch run. Rice has eclipsed 21 points in 5 of the last 11 games the Longhorns have played.

The backup guard has been dependable for much of the season on the offensive end. Texas will hope he brings the same level of play he brought last season in New Mexico State’s upset of UConn in the NCAA Tournament.

Timmy Allen is not ready to say goodbye to his collegiate career just yet.

The senior announced he will take advantage of his COVID-19 year and return to Texas for the 2022-23 season.

Allen led Texas in both scoring (12.1 points per game) and rebounding (6.4 rebounds per game) this past season. The 6-foot-6 forward excelled with his mid-range scoring and improved his defense as the season went along. He scored 24 points and hit the game-winning shot in Texas’ upset victory over the eventual national champion Kansas Jayhawks.

The Utah transfer was named second-team All-Big 12 in his first season with the Longhorns.

5 players in the transfer portal Oregon could pursue to replace Eric Williams

A look at five players currently in the transfer portal who Dana Altman and the Ducks could pursue to help replace the minutes vacated by Eric Williams.

The 2021-2022 college basketball season is wrapping up, with the Final Four taking place over the weekend among Duke, North Carolina, Kansas and Villanova.

The Oregon Ducks are already on vacation, but coach Dana Altman and his staff have plenty of work to do to reshape the roster heading into next season. They are coming off a year in which a late-season collapse cost them a chance to compete in the NCAA Tournament.

While there are plenty of players who could depart, either via the transfer portal or the professional ranks, so far the only rotation player to hit the road is wing Eric Williams, who entered the transfer portal earlier in the week.

Williams is a 6-foot-6 combo guard who averaged 27 minutes per night for Oregon this past season, scoring 8.4 points and grabbing 4.6 rebounds while shooting 35.1% from the 3-point line.

Replacing his production is no easy task, although the Ducks have plenty of talent joining the team in their outstanding recruiting class of 2022.

Still, a veteran wing who can score, play solid defense and shoot from the 3-point line would be a really nice addition to this team via the transfer portal, in part to replace Williams and in part to add experience to a team that is losing Williams as well as Jacob Young.

The portal isn’t lacking options that fit those parameters. Below is a list of five candidates currently available that Altman and his staff should pursue if they want to help supplement the young talent on the roster with some experience and shooting.
