Buckeyes dominate Week 9 top performers in the Big Ten

CJ Stroud, Marvin Harrison Jr, and J.T. Tuimoloau are among our top performers of the week.

In Week 9 there were 10 of the Big Ten’s 14 teams in action. The closest game on the slate featured Ohio State and Penn State in the Big Noon Kickoff game of the week. It was close for the majority of the game before the Buckeyes’ onslaught of points in the fourth quarter.

The blowout of the week belongs to Minnesota, who blanked Rutgers 31-0 behind the performance of running back Mohamed Ibrahim. The average margin of victory this past Saturday for the winning teams was 20.6 points.

With a new week of games comes the final look back at Week 9 with the top conference performers voted on by our Big Ten site editors.

The Voters:

Without further ado, let’s dive into the selections made by our editorial team

Ohio State DE J.T. Tuimoloau stunned college football world after colossal day against Penn State

Have a day, J.T. Tuimoloau!

Nobody had a better Week 9 Saturday in college football than Ohio State defensive end J.T. Tuimoloau.

The sophomore Buckeyes defender entirely took over Ohio State’s game against Penn State, helping them snag a 44-31 win in Happy Valley.

During the monster performance, Tuimoloau posted up two picks (including one that went back for a touchdown), two sacks, a forced fumble, a fumble recovery, a batted pass that led to a pick and six tackles.

It’s perhaps been the finest effort from a college defender during the regular season so far, and it surely helped Tuimoloau’s draft stock for whenever he declares for the NFL.

The humble Tuimoloau didn’t even pat his own back much after making such a crucial impact during the win.

It’s safe to say that opposing offenses are going to be paying extra attention to him in the weeks to come.

Ohio State DE J.T. Tuimoloau tormenting Sean Clifford, Penn State

Ohio State defensive end J.T. Tuimoloau is everywhere for the Buckeyes against Penn State

Ohio State defensive end J.T. Tuimoloau is having a scary game for the Buckeyes against Penn State two days before Halloween.

Tuimoloau has deflected a pass, intercepted a pass, sacked Sean Clifford, and recovered a fumble by the Penn State quarterback.

Would that be a football grand slam for a defensive player? Forget grand slam, Tuimoloau added a pick-six to complete his stunning day.

The turnover led to a touchdown pass from C.J. Stroud to Cade Stover, which covered 24 yards.

That made it a pair of touchdowns in 34 seconds for the Buckeyes in the Big Ten clash.

Ohio State led 30-21 after the PAT.

The pick-six.

Twitter reacts to J.T. Tuimoloau’s interception at Penn State

J.T. Tuimoloau is causing some major disruptions early in the Penn State game. #GoBucks

J.T. Tuimoloau is playing with his hair on fire. Late in the first quarter and Ohio State leads Penn State 10-0 largely due in part to Tuimoloau’s play.

On Penn State’s first possession, big No. 44 got some pressure on Nittany Lion quarterback Sean Clifford and tipped the ball high in the air where Zach Harrison was able to pull it in for an interception. While OSU wasn’t able to capitalize on that turnover, Tuimoloau would strike again on Penn State’s very next possession.

Clifford dropped back on a third and short and Tuimoloau dropped into coverage. As soon as the ball was released, the former five-star recruit reacted to slide in front of the PSU receiver to snag the pass for an INT of his own, the first of his career.

See the play, then check out what Twitter had to say about the athletic play from the big man.

Athlon Sports identifies two Ohio State football players as top 50 ‘breakout’ candidates for 2022

Athlon thinks these two Ohio State players could have “breakout” years this fall. #GoBucks

In order to have a truly special season, you have to have a good nucleus of players returning, but you also have to have those that have been waiting their turn jump up and become key players. Sometimes, they develop in the light so much that they become stars seemingly out of the blue.

Athlon Sports has been releasing a lot of interesting lists and fodder as the 2022 season gets ever so closer, and they just dropped another. The popular college football preview magazine identified 50 players in college football that could have “breakout” years, and there are two strapping Ohio State lads on the list.

It is, of course, no surprise when a player or two become the next man up and show us some pretty remarkable things at a place like OSU, but nevertheless, here’s what Athlon says about two players it sees as budding starts for the upcoming season.

Five Ohio State Buckeyes who could break out on defense next season

Five Ohio State Buckeyes who could break out on defense next season #GoBucks

The Ohio State Buckeyes should be ready to rock and roll in 2022 and the defense should be much improved, mostly considering it doesn’t appear it can get any worse. I am exaggerating of course, but there were more than a few pathetic outings last season by this unit.

The 2021 season was more or less a disappointment, but the 2022 Ohio State football should be primed to make a legitimate national championship run. Now spring football hasn’t even begun, but I like everyone else like to make bold predictions and wild speculations and the following are five Ohio State players that I expect to make a bigger impact during the 2022 season.

Some of these selections are going to be insanely obvious, but I would be a fool to leave them off. With that said, some of these players may raise an eyebrow, which I welcome.

Ohio State defenders we might see more of going forward

Some defensive players you might see more of for Ohio State going forward. Who do you think needs to be in there?

The Ohio State Buckeyes are going to be playing the 0-2 Tulsa Golden Hurricanes and not only has Tulsa not been able to get a win this season, but one of their losses was actually against an FCS opponent. Ohio State is favored by more than three touchdowns and although no opponent should be taken lightly, especially with how poorly the defense has been playing, Tulsa should definitely be considered a tune-up game.

The Buckeye defense has been far from productive and they need answers. Ohio State has been killing it on the recruiting trail the past few years and we know that some of these players are great and just need an opportunity. As former Buckeye head coach, John Cooper once said, “If a dog is going to bite, he’s going to bite as a pup.”

With that said let’s name some players that need to be given more snaps against Tulsa to see if they can “bite.”

I am not saying that the answer to all of the defensive woes will come out against Tulsa, but proving more time and experimenting with what you have should make some things more clear.

Ohio State leads all programs with five players on ESPN’s True Freshmen All-American Team

Ohio State had one whale of a recruiting class for 2021. ESPN named five OSU commits on its True Freshmen Team.

The season is just around the corner of the Ohio State block, but we’re still getting some preseason lists and rankings filter through the news cycle as listicle content. I mean, we’ve done the same ourselves, because — well, the college offseason.

ESPN apparently isn’t done either. It published its Preseason True Freshman All-American Team on Monday and it’s littered with Buckeyes. It makes sense with all the five-star commitments and all, but some OSU freshmen were picked multiple times by the duo of Tom VanHaaren and Tom Luginbill.

In fact, Ohio State leads all schools with a mention of five different players named to the team and we’ve got them for you.

J.T. Tuimoloau loses black stripe Saturday after just ten practices

J.T.! It only took ten practices for Tuimoloau to shed his black stripe.

As the preseason rolls on, we continue to keep an eye on the Ohio State newcomers that are “officially” becoming Buckeyes by having their black stripe removed. The list is growing, and one of the biggest defensive prospects OSU has ever landed just lost his on Saturday.

Five-star defensive end commitment J.T. Tuimoloau shed his black stripe on Saturday, and it is notable because he hasn’t been on campus that long. In fact, he didn’t commit to Ohio State until July 4, and he’s had just ten practices under his belt as a part of the Buckeye squad.

Tuimoloa took a moment to thank several groups during the short ceremony on Saturday.

First I want to thank God for blessing us with this game that we love,” Tuimoloau said. “I’d like to thank the offensive line for pushing me, and the D-line for holding me accountable every day, and coach J (Larry Johnson) for trusting me. Go Bucks!”

Tuimoloau becomes the first summer enrollee to lose his black stripe, and that means he’s getting after it. With the injury to Tyler Friday, watch for him to push to be a big part of things off the edge in the fall.
