Ranking the 21 players who have played for the most (at least 10!) NBA teams

Ish Smith has now suited up for nearly half the teams in the league. Who else comes close?

There is something special about a journeyman who has experience playing for various different franchises during their NBA careers.

As of the time of publishing this article, there are 21 players who played at least one game for at least 10 different teams around the league. While many are former undrafted free agents who scrapped and clawed their way around to stay pros, others were former top picks.

Joe Smith (No. 1 overall pick in 1995), Jim Jackson (No. 4 pick in 1992), Jeff Green (No. 5 pick in 2007) and D.J. Augustin (No. 9 pick in 2008) were lottery picks before bouncing around from team to team.

One reason for this is that you have to be pretty good to convince so many teams that you are worth an NBA contract.

So we took a look at the players who have played for the most teams while in the NBA. Feel free to use this as a resource next time you are having trouble guessing a player for Immaculate Grid.

Note that some active players who could potentially make this list in the future if they keep signing with new teams in the NBA include Justin Holiday, Robin Lopez, Jae Crowder, Seth Curry, George Hill, JaVale McGee, Markieff Morris and Noah Vonleh.

The pie charts provided below indicate how many games each player played with each team so you can track longevity.

Should the Celtics consider signing Ish Smith to shore up their backcourt depth?

In past campaigns, veteran floor general Ish Smith has given the Boston Celtics fits.

In past campaigns, veteran floor general Ish Smith has given the Boston Celtics fits. Should the Celtics consider signing Smith to one of their open roster spots to shore up their backcourt depth?

With career averages of 7.3 points, 2.4 rebounds and 3.8 assists per game over the course of his 13-year career (to say nothing of having “Larry” as a middle name), the Celtics could certainly do worse. But there are other interesting unsigned free agents to consider as well.

TJ Warren, Bismack Biyombo, James Johnson and others could still be had for one of Boston’s two open regular roster slots. They found themselves the topic of conversation for a recent episode of the “How Bout Them Celtics!” podcast.

To hear what the hosts had to say about Smith and Co. as potential Celtics signing targets, check out the clip embedded below.

Former Sixers guard Ish Smith happy for success Joel Embiid is having

Former Philadelphia 76ers guard Ish Smith is happy that Joel Embiid is having so much success.

PHILADELPHIA — Ish Smith has been everywhere in the NBA. The 13-year veteran in the NBA, currently with the Denver Nuggets, has played for 13 teams in his career, including the Philadelphia 76ers.

After looking for consistent NBA minutes with different teams, Smith joined the Sixers in the 2014-15 season after being waived by the Oklahoma City Thunder, and he finally got his chance. He played 27.1 minutes per game in 25 games with 14 starts. That led to him joining the New Orleans Pelicans in the 2015 offseason before being traded back to the Sixers in the 2015-16 season.

Overall, he played 75 games for the Sixers across two seasons and he met a young big man named Joel Embiid during his time in Philadelphia. While he never played a game with the big fella due to Embiid’s foot injuries, Smith was left impressed by what Embiid could do on the floor during their time together.

With Smith making another return to Philadelphia on Saturday, he spoke on what he remembered about Embiid and how happy he is for his success now.

The Nuggets and Wizards trade means Ish Smith has broken a wild NBA record

Ish Smith has joined his 13th team (!!!) in his career.

The Nuggets and Wizards made a deal on Wednesday, sending Monte Morris and Will Barton to Washington, and Denver received Kentavious Caldwell-Pope and Ish Smith.

For Smith, that means he’ll be joining his 13th (!!!) franchise in his 12 years playing in the NBA. And on Wednesday, I learned that’s a record. There are other players who have joined 12 teams — Joe Smith, Jim Jackson, Tony Massenberg and Chucky Brown are apparently in that club.

So congratulations — I guess? — to Smith for having his name in the record books. But he’s had a solid NBA career as a backup point guard who occasionally starts.

Will Barton, Monte Morris trade grades: Who won the Nuggets and Wizards deal?

Will Barton will now play for fellow Baltimore native Wes Unseld Jr., who coaches the Wizards.

NBA free agency also means the trade market is as active as ever, and we had a trade between the Denver Nuggets and Washington Wizards this morning.

After trading JaMychal Green to the Thunder and gaining some draft capital (which was used on UCLA freshman Peyton Watson) in the process, Denver has been active in the trade market of late.

As we’ve done in the past, we’ll grade the trade for both sides to help break down who won and lost the deal.

This is a guard and a wing trade for … a guard and a wing. Let’s break it all down for you:

Hornets acquire Montrezl Harrell for Ish Smith and Vernon Carey

The former Sixth Man of the Year is headed to Charlotte.

The NBA trade deadline was alive and well on Thursday as teams around the league looked to add, or subtract, their chances at a long run in the postseason.

For the Charlotte Hornets, they bolstered their front court depth by adding Montreal Harrell from the Washington Wizards in return for Ish Smith and Vernon Carey Jr.

The Hornets were known to be in the market for an upgrade at the center position but landed Harrell to add depth to their bench unit. Harrell now reunites with Terry Rozier, who were college teammates at Louisville.

In 46 games with the Wizards this season, Harrell averaged 14.1 points and 6.7 rebounds per game.

Charlotte Hornets player grades from opening night win over Pacers

Here are the individual player grades as the Charlotte Hornets beat the Indiana Pacers on the road.

Well, that’s one way to open up the regular season.

The Charlotte Hornets hold off the Indiana Pacers at the buzzer, 123-122, as Domantas Sabonis misses a fadeaway jumper over the stretched hands of P.J. Washington.

The Pacers had their hands all over this one, jumping out to a 23-point lead, but a 24-0 run by the Hornets, led by LaMelo, in the third quarter, got Charlotte back in the game.

LaMelo Ball led the way for the Hornets with 31 points, 9 rebounds, 7 assists, and 2 steals on 11-of-23 shooting and 7-of-9 from 3-point range.

Gordon Hayward got hot in the fourth quarter, finishing with 27 points, 5 rebounds, and 3 assists. Miles Bridges added 13 points, 8 rebounds, 4 assists, 3 steals, and 1 block as he filled the stat sheet.

Sixers identify Josh Richardson as a key reason for win over Wizards

The Philadelphia 76ers identify Josh Richardson as a key reason for knocking off the Washington Wizards.

Philadelphia 76ers guard Josh Richardson does get swept under the rug a lot on this team. Especially considering he is on a team with Joel Embiid and Ben Simmons and they get all the love from the media and the team and everything else in between.

However, his contributions cannot be overstated on this team. In their 107-98 win over the Washington Wizards, Richardson contributed 15 points and he knocked down three of his six attempts from deep. He shot 5-for-9 from the floor overall and this comes after a tough opener against the Indiana Pacers to begin the restart.

Coach Brett Brown has said in the past that he does not call plays for his starting shooting guard and that remains to be true, but Richardson still continues to find his niche and make an impact on this team.

“I think Josh Richardson is just sort of that quiet contributor on most nights,” said Brown. “I think the last time that we played against San Antonio, I liked his mentality, just his attack mentality. I think just living in that world as opposed to thinking that there’s going to be a lot of play calls, it’s not going to happen that way so his impact is going to come from him playing with that mentality than a coach just calling a play. I think he was very good in that capacity.”

On top of his needed contributions on offense, Richardson stepped up to the plate when the time called for it against Washington’s guards. Despite not having Bradley Beal, the Wizards boast a lot of quick offensive guards led by Ish Smith, Jerome Robinson, and Troy Brown Jr. who are very good at attacking the rim and Richardson was able to make an impact on defense.

“I thought that he stalked their guards and we needed him,” Brown added. “When you start talking apples to apples, they got live ball guards who can play downhill and get to the rim far too often in the first half, but J-Rich’s ability to defend that and keep those types of athletes in front of him, I thought stood out again tonight. He really was very, very important for us to get this win.”

This is a good sign for Philadelphia. Granted, when the playoffs begin, they will have to take on much better and quicker guards than what Washington can boast, but Richardson makes a big difference on that end.

When they next take on the Orlando Magic on Friday, he has another challenge in the form of former Sixer Markelle Fultz as well as Evan Fournier. [lawrence-related id=36243,36227,36213]

Lakers play final scrimmage vs. Wizards: How To Watch

The Los Angeles Lakers play their final scrimmage game on Monday against the Washington Wizards.

The Los Angeles Lakers are scheduled to play their third and final scrimmage game on Monday when they take on the Washington Wizards. It’s unclear who all will play, but Anthony Davis is still recovering from being poked in the eye in Saturday’s scrimmage. LeBron James has played in the previous two scrimmages and with the Wizards coming in without their best players, it may make sense for him to sit this one out and rest until Thursday’s opener against the Los Angeles Clippers.

How To Watch

Time: Noon Pacific/3 p.m. Eastern

Channel: Spectrum SportsNet (Local Lakers TV Area), NBA TV and NBA League Pass

Today’s game is expected to be a 48-minute scrimmage. The Lakers are 1-1 in their scrimmage games. If the Lakers are going to play without their stars in today’s scrimmage against the Wizards, look for their reserves like Dion Waiters, Alex Caruso, and Quinn Cook to get plenty of opportunities to work up a sweat.

Ish Smith tells funny ‘process’ Sixers story regarding Joel Anthony

Former Philadelphia 76ers guard Ish Smith tells a story from the process days regarding Joel Anthony.

The Philadelphia 76ers are a long way off from the infamous “process”, but it’s still funny now and then to look back on what was some of the darkest years in Sixers franchise history.

Former Sixers process champion, and now Washington Wizards guard, Ish Smith was asked by Go For It radio about a funny process moment with the Sixers and he had one at the ready.

Smith recalled a 3-team trade the Sixers made with the Houston Rockets and the Detroit Pistons back in 2016 that would have sent Joel Anthony to Philadelphia. The trade would have affected everybody’s money, but it was voided after Donatas Motiejunas failed his physical with the Pistons.

Smith recalled:

We knew that if the money wasn’t right, then we were going to get a certain amount. They end up making a trade for Joel Anthony so they can make the money right and we wouldn’t get the extra money…so we were like, and nothing against Joel, we were like ‘Man!’ and it ended up like, we come in the locker room and we’re thinking we’re going to see him in the locker room and they were like ‘No, the trade didn’t go through’. I want to say somebody failed his physical and we were so hype!

Playing for the process Sixers was already a chore, the least they could do was earn themselves some extra money. [lawrence-related id=25670,25663,25657]
