Terron Armstead doubtful, 5 Dolphins questionable vs. Texans

One Dolphins starting offensive tackle is doubtful and the other is questionable for a Week 15 game in Houston.

The Miami Dolphins will likely be without left tackle Terron Armstead and may be without right tackle Kendall Lamm, as well, when they take on the Houston Texans in Week 15.

“I am a little pessimistic about [Armstead] this week and we’ve planned accordingly, but we’ll see how the next 48 hours go,” Dolphins coach Mike McDaniel told reporters Friday.

In the event that Armstead is ruled out, second-round rookie Patrick Paul would be in line to make his second NFL start. If both Armstead and Lamm, who is questionable with a back injury, are out, the Dolphins have former Bengals lineman Jackson Carman next up on the depth chart. There’s also Isaiah Wynn, who began his career at tackle before moving to guard with the Dolphins.

Here’s the full injury report for both teams heading into a Week 15 game at NRG Stadium in Houston:

Dolphins activate G Isaiah Wynn off IR, waive veteran OL

The Dolphins swapped out offensive linemen on the active roster Monday.

The Miami Dolphins officially added guard Isaiah Wynn back into the fold Monday, activating the veteran offensive lineman off the injured reserve.

To make room on the 53-man roster, the Dolphins waived sixth-year veteran offensive lineman Lester Cotton, who has been with the team since 2022.

Wynn, 28, is a former New England Patriots first-round pick who joined the Dolphins on a one-year deal in 2023. He earned starting left guard duties, but suffered a season-ending quad injury in his seventh game with Miami.

The Dolphins re-signed Wynn in the 2024 offseason to another one-year deal, but he’s been unavailable as he continued to rehab his quad injury. Last week, Dolphins offensive line coach Butch Barry said the team has been pleased with the progress Robert Jones has made and will stick with him as the starter instead of Wynn.

Cotton, 28, began his NFL career with the Las Vegas Raiders in 2019 and was signed to the Dolphins’ practice squad during the 2022 season. If he clears waivers this week, it wouldn’t be a surprise if Cotton rejoins the Miami practice squad.

Dolphins OL coach says guard won’t get starting job back upon return

Dolphins offensive line coach Butch Barry says the team won’t shake up the starting lineup up front.

Isaiah Wynn earned starting left guard duties with the Miami Dolphins in 2023, but it was short-lived. The former New England Patriots first-round pick suffered a season-ending quad injury in Week 7 and hasn’t yet played in 2024.

But with Wynn ready to make his return to the field as early as Sunday, Miami Dolphins offensive line coach Butch Barry told reporters Thursday that the veteran lineman won’t be walking back into the starting lineup.

“[Robert Jones] has done an excellent job for us,” Barry said. “[He] continues to hone in on his craft the way we ask them to do things. He’s a great leader in the room. He’s great on the field in terms of standard and how we want to work how we go about our business.”

Jones spent most of his first three seasons with the Dolphins as a reserve lineman, but has stepped into the starting lineup on a full-time basis in 2024.

According to Pro Football Focus, Jones has given up a team-high four sacks, but his 62.1 grade is higher than Liam Eichenberg’s 53.7 and Austin Jackson’s 60.0. During the 2023 season, Wynn earned a 47.8 grade before his season-ending injury.

The Dolphins re-signed Wynn in the offseason to his second one-year deal with the team, but it seems he’ll be a backup after he’s activated from injured reserve.

“He is a professional in his approach,” Barry said of Wynn. “He’s got a great relationship with everybody in the room so he does a great job with that. … He’s getting better every day and he’s working his tail off.”

Wynn returned to practice earlier this month, but kept him on injured reserve for a Week 11 game against the Las Vegas Raiders. They can keep him on IR for the next two games as well, but can activate him to the active roster anytime prior to that.

Dolphins leave 2 players nearing return on IR for Week 11

The Dolphins didn’t do any roster tinkering Saturday and ruled two players out.

Miami Dolphins offensive lineman Isaiah Wynn and safety Patrick McMorris are both staying on injured reserve and have been ruled out for a Week 11 game against the Las Vegas Raiders.

Both Wynn and McMorris have returned to practices and were listed as questionable for Sunday, but have been downgraded to out on the team’s injury report. It’s an expected decision for the Dolphins after head coach Mike McDaniel told reporters that a move to the active roster was unlikely for either player.

“I think it’s a more likely week-by-week,” McDaniel said. “But I think that’s more likely a possibility in the next coming weeks than this week.”

Wynn, 28, joined the Dolphins in 2023 after beginning his career with the New England Patriots as a first-round pick in 2018. He earned starting left guard duties with Miami, but suffered a season-ending quad injury after playing in seven games.

The Dolphins have turned to Robert Jones to handle left guard duties so far in 2024 with veteran utility lineman Liam Eichenberg at right guard.

McMorris, 23, was a sixth-round pick in the 2024 NFL draft and had strong moments in preseason before he was sidelined with a foot injury.

Isaiah Wynn had ‘lingering things’ that lengthened PUP stint

The quad injury Isaiah Wynn suffered in 2023 caused other “lingering things” that have kept the Dolphins lineman out of action.

Miami Dolphins offensive lineman Isaiah Wynn was once penciled in as a potential starter for the team in 2024. The former Patriots first-round pick earned starting left guard duties with the Dolphins in 2023, but a quad injury ended his year after seven games.

Wynn, 28, was re-signed in the offseason by Miami, but remains out of action nearly a full year removed from his 2023 injury.

“There were some lingering things that did come up that weren’t the quad based upon the quad injury, if that makes sense,” Dolphins coach Mike McDaniel explained Monday morning. “There’s residuals in the human body and stress in one area can lead to stress in another.”

“He’s in this building non-stop trying to get himself back on the field. For me, I’m just embracing no setbacks and hope to get him on the field. I don’t know when that is, I’m not going to venture to guess … but it’s been a very positive couple weeks for him, specifically, as we hope to get him back on the field.”

Wynn is eligible to make his return to the practice field at any point and could work with the team for up to 21 days without counting against the team’s 53-man roster limit. The Dolphins could move Wynn to the active roster at any point during that three-week time period.

On Monday, McDaniel said there were a couple of Dolphins players who could potentially return to practice this week, although he wasn’t ready to reveal who was in consideration. While he ruled out Bradley Chubb as a possibility, Wynn and wide receiver River Cracraft are among those currently eligible to return.

With Wynn out of action in training camp, fourth-year veteran Robert Jones earned the left guard job. However, he’s been a bit of a weak link on the Dolphins offense line. His 59.8 grade on Pro Football Focus ranks last among the team’s starting linemen, although it’s not much different than the 60.6 and 60.3 grades for right guard Liam Eichenberg and right tackle Austin Jackson, respectively.

As a whole, the Dolphins offensive line has been better than expected. It ranks 11th in ESPN’s pass block win rate metric and 16th in run block win rate.

Mike McDaniel announces Bradley Chubb, 2 others to stay on PUP list

Mike McDaniel says three of the four Dolphins players currently on the PUP list will stay there. The other is “TBD.”

The Miami Dolphins have until Tuesday to decide if the four players currently on their physically unable to perform (PUP) list will come off and be available Week 1, or stay and be forced to miss at least the first four games of the season.

“Isaiah Wynn, Cam Goode, and Bradley Chubb will start [the season] on PUP,” Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel revealed Monday morning.

That leaves one other player, Odell Beckham Jr., with an undetermined status.

“TBD (to be determined), TBD. More information required,” McDaniel said of Beckham.

Wynn, Goode, and Chubb all ended the 2023 season on injured reserve. Beckham spent last season with the Baltimore Ravens and it’s unclear what injury has kept him out since signing with the Dolphins earlier this year.

A rule change in 2024 also means that the Dolphins will be allowed to place up to two players on the injured reserve Tuesday with a designation to return. Previously, a player would be forced to miss the entire season if they were placed on IR without spending at least a day on the 53-man roster.

Dolphins re-sign OL Isaiah Wynn

Miami brings back a starting offensive lineman from 2023.

The Miami Dolphins entered the offseason with holes at all three of the starting interior offensive line spots with Isaiah Wynn, Connor Williams and Robert Hunt all hitting the market.

Now, it looks like one of them is returning, as ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports that Wynn is signing back with the Dolphins for the 2024 season.

Wynn, 28, was originally drafted by the New England Patriots in the first round of the 2018 NFL draft out of Georgia. After dealing with a number of injuries during his with New England, he signed a one-year deal with Miami last offseason.

With the Dolphins, Wynn appeared in just seven games due to a quad injury that landed him on injured reserve.

At this point, Wynn seems like the leader to be the team’s starting left guard, but if Miami is smart, they’ll sign some quality depth in case Wynn gets hurt again.

6 Offensive linemen the Vikings could pursue in free agency

The Minnesota Vikings need to fortify their offensive line. These six players could be targets for them when free agency begins.

Offensive line is a position group that has haunted the Minnesota Vikings for some time. What has plagued them has been a series of poor draft picks, rough free agent signings and bad development.

Over the last few years, the Vikings have started to find hits, especially at tackle. Christian Darrisaw and Brian O’Neill are two of the best tackles in the National Football League. On the interior, Ed Ingram is slowly developing and Garrett Bradbury is fine but replaceable.

With the current state of the offensive line, left guard is currently open as are the backup offensive line spots. Who could the Vikings choose to bring in to help fortify the offensive line? One seems like a near certainty at left guard so we focused on rotational guys behind the starters.

Grading the Dolphins offensive linemen after their 2023 season

A look at Miami’s offensive linemen, and the year they had in 2023.

The Miami Dolphins finished their 2023 campaign with an 11-6 record and made the postseason for the second time in as many years under head coach Mike McDaniel. Unfortunately, it came to an end with a loss to the Kansas City Chiefs in the wild-card round.

While other teams are in the midst of their playoff run, it’s time to do some reflecting on the team in South Florida.

Over the next couple of weeks, we’ll be reviewing and evaluating different positions for the Dolphins in 2023. Today, we’ll look at the offensive linemen.

Ranking the 10 most important Dolphins free agents they should re-sign

10 pending free agents the Dolphins should consider bringing back.

The Miami Dolphins have 29 players on their current roster who are going to be free agents in 2024. Many of the pending free agents played major roles in the regular season and wild-card game against the Kansas City Chiefs.

With the season ending in major disappointment, general manager Chris Grier and head coach Mike McDaniel must look ahead to what the near future holds for the aqua and orange. The team has already been in the news with the departure of defensive coordinator Vic Fangio.

The new NFL calendar begins with free agency opening on March 13. This is a free agency that will contain massive decisions for the Dolphins on offense, defense and special teams.

Here are the top 10 most important pending free agents that the Dolphins should consider re-signing.
