Analyzing terms of new Dolphins OT Isaiah Wynn’s contract

The dead money likely means he’s guaranteed a spot.

After the 2023 NFL draft, the Miami Dolphins felt that they still had holes along the offensive line, despite drafting Michigan’s Ryan Hayes in the seventh round.

With this, Miami signed former New England Patriots offensive tackle Isaiah Wynn. According to Over the Cap, the two sides agreed to a one-year deal worth $2.3 million.

The former Georgia Bulldog will earn $1.08 million in base salary, which is fully guaranteed. He’s also getting $880,000 in a signing bonus and another $340,000 in per-game roster bonuses.

This contract likely means that Wynn will be on the roster when the regular season rolls around, barring an injury or a precipitous drop in ability. Cutting Wynn would cost Miami $1.96 million in a dead cap hit while they’d only save $180,000.

As Mike McDaniel said earlier in the offseason, Wynn is getting work at both tackle and guard – the two spots that the team could use the help. There’s a strong chance that Wynn, as a first-round pick just a few years back, grabs a starting spot on the line before the season opener.

3 things to know about new Dolphins OT Isaiah Wynn

Get to know the former first-round pick.

The Miami Dolphins addressed one of their biggest needs remaining on the roster, as they signed offensive tackle Isaiah Wynn on Monday.

Wynn was originally selected by the New England Patriots in the first round of the 2018 draft. He was New England’s first of two picks in the top 32 that year, as they also selected Wynn’s college teammate, and former Dolphin, Sony Michel.

While it’s unclear whether or not Wynn will be the starting right tackle for the 2023 season, he should at least be in the competition with Austin Jackson and Cedric Ogbuehi.

Here are a few things that fans should know about Wynn before he dons a Dolphins jersey for the first time.

Dolphins OT Isaiah Wynn comments on facing Patriots in 2023

Dolphins OT Isaiah Wynn is appreciative of his time in New England, but he’s also excited for a chance to face his former Patriots teammates.

Former first-round draft pick Isaiah Wynn is settling into life with the Miami Dolphins after spending his previous four seasons with the New England Patriots.

A disappointing end to his tenure in New England led to him lingering on the free agent market before finally signing a one-year, $2.3 million dollar deal to take his talents to South Beach.

Wynn spoke with the media on Tuesday and commented on what it will be like when lining up against his former teammates in 2023.

“They’re the team that drafted me, so I appreciate everybody in that organization from the staff to the players,” said Wynn, per FOX Sports’ Henry McKenna. “I thank them. My time was good there, and then it’s going to be fun playing against them because especially seeing them twice a year being on the opposite side; being there previously, you play against guys that may have already been there and now I’m on the other side now. So, it’s always a fun camaraderie. We’ll see how it all plays out for sure.”

Wynn’s run didn’t go as expected with the Patriots, but he wasn’t a bad player.

His biggest problem was a lack of availability. The team could never count on him to stay healthy consistently enough for things to work out. Yes, the 2022 season was an absolute mess on the field, but that was the case for a lot of Patriots players with the team’s offensive coaching struggles.

Perhaps a change of scenery will lead to renewed hope for Wynn on his NFL journey.

Isaiah Wynn’s new reported deal comes with less money and uncertainty

Here’s the reported details on Isaiah Wynn’s new deal with the Dolphins.

[anyclip pubname=”2103″ widgetname=”0016M00002U0B1kQAF_M8036″]

Former New England Patriots offensive tackle Isaiah Wynn didn’t get the $5 million per year contract he posted as the base line price for his services back in March.

Instead, he signed with the rival Miami Dolphins on a one-year, $2.3 million deal with a max of $2.7 million in incentives.

So that’s a considerable drop-off from the long-term deal Wynn was probably hoping to get. The Dolphins also haven’t stepped up with any hefty guarantees to solidify Wynn’s position on the roster. From the looks of it, they are simply dipping their toes in the water and taking a flier on the former first-round draft pick.

Wynn fell off a cliff in his final season with the Patriots.

Granted, his entire run with the team was marred with injuries, but there were moments when he flashed franchise starting potential. But throughout the 2022 season, he struggled with penalties and pass blocking.

According to Pro Football Focus, his overall pass-blocking grade for the year was 52.8 with his worst game coming against the Cleveland Browns, when he had a 5.0 grade.

Wynn could be heading towards a make-or-break training camp this summer in an effort to keep his NFL career alive.

On Sunday, the Miami Dolphins addressed one of their biggest roster needs, signing former New England Patriots offensive tackle Isaiah Wynn to a one-year deal.

The former first-round pick is expected to compete for the right tackle job with Austin Jackson, but he could provide some great depth at a position that could definitely need it due to the injury history of both Jackson and Terron Armstead.

Before Wynn takes the field in aqua and orange for the first time, it’s a great opportunity to get a look at some of his best moments during his career with the Patriots.

Former New England Patriots offensive tackle Isaiah Wynn has reportedly signed a one-year deal with the Miami Dolphins. NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported the news on Sunday.

Wynn, a former first-round draft pick, had a turbulent run with the Patriots. Injuries were the biggest issue considering he only played in more than 10 games once in a season in the entirety of his four-year run with the team.

There were flashes of serious talent on the football field, but he was never around enough to stay in sync with the rest of the offensive line. Things really unraveled in 2022 with penalties becoming the norm, along with pass blocking struggles.

Wynn tweeted back in March that teams needed to be in the $5 million range to even talk to him about signing a deal.

Now, he joins the Dolphins on what seems to be a prove-it deal in an effort to cash in on an even bigger contract down the line. He won’t have to wait long to face his former Patriots teammates in Foxboro with the Dolphins slated for a Week 2 visit in 2023.

He should compete for the starting job with Austin Jackson.

Despite using one of their four 2023 draft selections on an offensive tackle, the Miami Dolphins still had a previous obvious need for talent at the positon at the end of the three-day selection meeting.

On Saturday, the Dolphins addressed the issue by signing former New England Patriots offensive tackle Isaiah Wynn to a one-year deal, according to NFL Network Ian Rapoport.

Wynn entered the league as a first-round pick in 2018 after an impressive collegiate career at Georgia. He spent his first three seasons as New England’s starting left tackle before being moved to the right side in 2022.

Health has been an issue for the former Bulldog in his five-year career, as he’s only started in 40 of the potential 82 games he could’ve been on the field for.

In Miami, he should be able to compete with Austin Jackson for the starting right tackle spot, and if he doesn’t win, he can still provide solid depth at the position.

This former Patriot is still on list of best free agents available

Former Patriots starter still looking for a new team.

There are still several NFL free agents left out on the market, including a former member of the New England Patriots.

NFL.com’s Gregg Rosenthal compiled a list of the best available free agents, and former New England offensive tackle Isaiah Wynn was on it.

Wynn was drafted by New England in the first round of the 2018 NFL draft. He began his career as a dependable left tackle for the organization. However, injury issues and poor play forced him to take a bit of a backseat in 2022. He appeared in nine games and started seven of them.

His poor performance resulted in him being benched twice, with the last occurrence taking place on October 17. Marcus Cannon came in to replace him during that game and served as his backup.

Wynn became a free agent at the end of the season. Here’s what Rosenthal had to say about the tackle:

It’s a bad sign that Wynn seemed to fall out of favor with the Patriots before landing on injured reserve, but he’s still a young player with plenty of high-level tape — though it came during his first three seasons.

It will be interesting to see if Wynn lands anywhere before the start of the 2023 campaign. He still could be a serviceable lineman, but it became very clear that his time ran out in New England. He will have to resurrect his career elsewhere.

NFL Free Agency figures to pick up again: Here are 5 great options for Raiders

5 great options for Raiders as Free Agency figures to heat up again.

Typically you think of free agency as happening in March. That’s when those players whose contracts are up with their clubs are able to negotiate and sign elsewhere. And for the most part, the top options fly off the market, following by a couple more “waves”. Then it cools down and teams shift their focus to the draft.

But that doesn’t mean it’s over. It’s more of a break before it starts up again.

There is another wave starting up now. Why? Well, two reasons, really: One, it’s when players can be signed and it will no longer count against the team’s compensatory pick total. And two, because the draft is done which means teams know what areas they were able to address and which still require some attention.

For the Raiders, they were able to address basically edge rusher and tight end for certain.

At seven overall they got edge rusher Tyree Wilson and at 35 overall they got tight end Michael Mayer. Those are the two sure starting caliber players. After that, there’s still plenty of room for upgrades and competition.

Friday the Raiders cleared up some cap space by restructuring Chandler Jones’s deal, giving him about $4 million to spend on free agency should they wish to use it.

Here a short list of some free agents still out there who could make sense for the Raiders

11 unsigned free agents who can help teams with the 2023 NFL Draft over

With the draft over, these experienced players can still help some teams.

The 2023 NFL Draft is over, and soon it’ll be time to hunker down for the summer for the entire league.

But, with the acquisition period officially a thing of the past, once every team takes stock of what they have rostered, they’ll be looking to fill in the gaps wherever they can. And trust me, as much as there’s a lot of awesome undrafted free-agent talent out there, sometimes you can’t rely on youth as much as you want. Experience wins out, especially for those guys who already know what it’s like to battle against legitimate NFL competition.

Here are 11 unsigned (and useful!) NFL veterans who can still help teams now that the 2023 NFL Draft is in the books.
