Steelers fans react to Roman Wilson IR news

Roman Wilson’s injured hamstring resulted in the rookie being placed on IR. Here are some passionate fan reactions to the awful news.

The, ‘will Roman Wilson play’ drama, appears to be taking a short-term hiatus—four weeks at least—as the rookie’s hamstring injury resulted in the receiver being placed on injured reserve. In recent weeks, fans and reporters alike have been calling for clarification as to why Wilson was being used so sparingly, only playing for a total of 5 snaps in one game thus far in 2024.

Some were quick to point out Wilson’s injuries leading up to his Week 5 debut; however, he was a healthy scratch in the weeks before this. Wilson also missed his team’s Week 6 game, but Tomlin argued that Wilson’s hamstring injury was less of a reason and that he had ‘moved on’ from the situation.

Fans of the Steel City were split on their initial reactions to Wilson being added to IR on Monday, and here are some of the passionate social media responses to the news.

Steelers vs Raiders: Las Vegas places star defensive tackle on IR

The Raiders will take on the Steelers without star DT Christian Wilkins.

When the Pittsburgh Steelers square off with the Las Vegas Raiders this week, they will have one less star defender to contend with. On Tuesday, the Raiders placed defensive tackle Christian Wilkins on IR.

Wilkins is on IR due to having surgery to repair a Jones fracture in his foot. He is out indefinitely and they team offered no specific timetable for a return. Wilkins came over to the Raiders this offseason from Miami Dolphins as one of the biggest free-agent signings of the offseason. He’s a former No. 13 overall pick.

The absence of Wilkins should make life easier for a Steelers offensive line that continues to shuffle starting spots and struggle with growing pains associated with two rookies as starters.

The Steelers defense is going to be short-handed as well. Head coach Mike Tomlin has ruled out edge rushers Nick Herbig and Demarvin Leal after both suffered injuries last weekend against the Dallas Cowboys.

Steelers adding Troy Fautanu (knee) to IR

Troy Fautanu is reportedly being placed on IR by the Pittsburgh Steelers.

As reported by ESPN NFL reporter Adam Schefter on Friday, offensive tackle Troy Fautanu suffered a knee injury and was considered out indefinitely.  It is now being reported that the Pittsburgh Steelers will be placing the rookie right tackle on Injured/Reserve. The Steelers are preparing to take on the Los Angeles Chargers in the home opener.

This injury couldn’t have come at a worse time for the rookie, who had made his regular season debut in Week 2 and looked phenomenal.

Will the Steelers have a ‘next man up’ mentality, keeping the right tackle position battle at in-house?  Or will they look to sign a proven veteran, such as former 2015 first-round pick D.J. Humphries?

Only time will tell how Mike Tomlin and his staff handle the devastating news and hole that is left by Fautanu’s injury.  Here’s to a speedy recovery for the 2024 first-round pick. In his place, Broderick Jones will start opposite Dan Moore Jr.

Steelers place special teams ace on IR

Pittsburgh placed LB Tyler Matakevich on IR with a hamstring injury.

On Tuesday, the Pittsburgh Steelers announced a handful of roster moves. The Steelers signed defensive backs James Pierre and D’Shawn Johnson to the practice squad. In the process, the team also terminated the contracts of wide receiver Shaquan Davis and cornerback Zyon Gilbert to make room.

The team also placed inside linebacker and special teams ace Tyler Matakevich on IR with a hamstring injury. This means Matakevich will have to miss the next four games. Pittsburgh brought Matakevich back this offseason after he spent the last four seasons with the Buffalo Bills.

Matakevich spent 2017-2019 with the Steelers after they selected him in the seventh round of the 2017 NFL draft out of the University of Temple.

With an opening on the 53-man roster, we expect Pierre to be the guy to replace Matakevich on the roster. His experience with the Steelers and skills on special teams make him a valuable asset while Matakevich is on IR.

Christian McCaffrey update: No IR for 49ers’ star RB

No IR for Christian McCaffrey. Here’s what that means:

The San Francisco 49ers plan to get running back Christian McCaffrey back sooner rather than later.

That would be the indication based on head coach Kyle Shanahan’s press conference Wednesday. Shanahan told reporters the club never considered putting McCaffrey on IR as he works through calf and Achilles injuries.

If McCaffrey went on IR he’d have to miss a minimum of four weeks. He was out for the season opener and he’s still day-to-day with his lower leg ailments. Shanahan told reporters McCaffrey would be limited in Wednesday’s practice as the team prepares to face the Minnesota Vikings.

Putting McCaffrey on IR at this point would mean he’s out until at least Week 6.

Shanahan also said after the team’s season opener that McCaffrey would have played if it was a postseason game, which is more evidence his absence is more about injury management. This is something the 49ers and McCaffrey will likely be dealing with all season.

There’s a chance he could miss the second game according to a report from ESPN’s Adam Schefter. A limited practice Wednesday would seem to indicate that a Week 2 absence is still on the table.

However, the team clearly doesn’t plan for him to miss many more games than that. If they did, they’d put him on IR and open a roster spot to provide some depth at running back.

The 49ers have options once McCaffrey does return. Backup RB Jordan Mason looked excellent in the season opener and appears to be a viable ball carrier who can spell McCaffrey during games to help him lighten the workload on his ailing Achilles.

Steelers place rookie defender on IR

The Steelers placed Logan Lee on IR.

According to the NFL transaction report, per NFL reporter Aaron Wilson, the Pittsburgh Steelers have placed a rookie defender on injured reserve. Pittsburgh elevated wide receiver Ben Skowronek to the active roster to replace rookie defensive lineman Logan Lee.

The Steelers selected Lee in the sixth round of the 2024 NFL draft out of Iowa. Depending on the severity of Lee’s injury, he could be one of the eight opportunities to activate players in-season from the IR.

Skowronek was a seventh-round pick of the Los Angeles Rams in 2021. In three seasons, Skowroneck has 58 career receptions for 575 yards.

The Steelers are preparing to take on the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday, With Lee headed to IR, the Steelers will count on veteran free agent addition Dean Lowry to rotate in on the defensive line.

Falcons defense takes a hit as 3rd-round pick heads to IR

Falcons defense takes a hit as 3rd-round pick heads to IR

The Atlanta Falcons defense got struck a blow this week when it came out that defensive end Bralen Trice has been placed on IR, ending his rookie season before it even began.

The Falcons got a steal with Trice in the third round of the 2024 NFL draft, Trice played his college ball at the University of Washington where he established himself as one of the top strong-side edge defenders in the draft.

Trice was well on his way to being a starter for the Falcons at outside linebacker prior to his injury. Despite weighing in at 274 pounds, Trice showed solid speed and athleticism to work standing up and in space.

Falcons head coach Raheem Morris spoke to the media about the loss of Trice.

“It’s always tough when you lose a rook,” Falcons coach Raheem Morris said on Monday. “You lose a guy that you were about to count on on the edge, to be able to have a role and to be able to define his role and all those type of things.”

Steelers announce multiple roster moves

The Steelers placed Trenton Thompson on IR and activated Damontae Kazee.

The Pittsburgh Steelers announced a handful of roster moves on Wednesday ahead of this week’s playoff showdown against the Buffalo Bills. First and foremost, the team activated safety Damontae Kazee after serving his three-game suspension.

The team also placed safety Trenton Thompson on IR. Thompson did a nice job filling in with the rash of losses in the Steelers secondary. Pittsburgh also brought back wide receiver Dan Chisena and signed him to the practice squad. To make room on the practice squad, the team released running back Jake Funk.

Pittsburgh won their final three games of the season and got some help from the Tennessee Titans to get into the playoffs. The Steelers not only got Kazee back but should have Minkah Fitzpatrick back as well against the Bills.

Packers CB Eric Stokes designated for return from IR

Eric Stokes, who missed the last 5 games with a hamstring injury, was designated for return from injured reserve on Monday.

The Green Bay Packers designated cornerback Eric Stokes for return from injured reserve on Monday, opening his 21-day practice window and creating the possibility of him returning to play Sunday night against the Kansas City Chiefs.

Stokes, who missed the Packers’ last five games with a hamstring injury, can now practice with the team for up to three weeks — without counting a spot on the 53-man roster — before he must be activated to roster or sent back to injured reserve. The Packers can activate him at any point during the three-week window.

Stokes injured his hamstring on a special teams snap vs. the Denver Broncos. He missed games against the Minnesota Vikings, Los Angeles Rams, Pittsburgh Steelers, Los Angeles Chargers and Detroit Lions. Players on injured reserve must miss a minimum of four games before being eligible for designation to return.

Stokes has played only four special teams — all in Denver — since suffering significant foot and knee injuries last November in a loss to the Detroit Lions.

The Packers could use Stokes down the stretch. Rasul Douglas was traded to the Buffalo Bills at the deadline and Jaire Alexander has battled back and shoulder injuries. Over the last few weeks, the Packers have started rookie Carrington Valentine at one cornerback spot and former practice squader Corey Ballentine at the other. Keisean Nixon remains the slot corner.

If nothing else, the Packers need to see where Stokes is at physically over the final six games and how he fits into the puzzle at cornerback long-term.

Last week, the Packers designated safety Darnell Savage for return from injured reserve but did not activate him in time to play vs. the Detroit Lions. It’s possible both Stokes and Savage could be available for the Packers come Sunday night against Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs.

Packers TE Luke Musgrave lands on injured reserve, to miss at least 4 games

Packers rookie TE Luke Musgrave will miss at least the next four games after suffering a significant abdomen injury. He was placed on injured reserve Wednesday.

The significant abdomen injury suffered by Green Bay Packers tight end Luke Musgrave during Sunday’s 23-20 win over the Los Angeles Chargers will cost the rookie at least the next four games. The Packers placed Musgrave on injured reserve as part of six roster moves made Wednesday.

Musgrave, the 42nd overall pick in the 2023 draft, will miss games against the Detroit Lions, Kansas City Chiefs, New York Giants and Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He will be eligible to return Dec. 24 against the Carolina Panthers, although it’s unclear at this point if a return to the playing field is possible in 2023.

Musgrave needed to be hospitalized after suffering the injury. He played through the injury Sunday but became aware of the underlying issue Monday.

Musgrave appeared in each of the Packers’ first 10 games and was on the field for 71 percent of the offense’s snaps. He ranks third on the team in targets (45) and receiving yards (341) and second in receptions (33) entering Week 12. He caught 73.3 percent of his targets, averaged 7.7 yards per target and produced five catches of 20 or more yards. He scored his one and only touchdown during a win over the Los Angeles Rams in Week 9.

Without Musgrave, the Packers will turn to rookies Tucker Kraft and Ben Sims to play leading roles at tight end over at least the next four games. Kraft produced a 27-yard catch against the Chargers and has come on as a run blocker. The majority of Sims’ playing time has come as a blocker, but he does have two catches for 14 yards.

The Packers also placed rookie running back Emanuel Wilson on injured reserve. He suffered a shoulder injury against the Chargers.
