Michigan State basketball falls to Iowa in ugly blowout on the road

Michigan State falls to Iowa in ugly blowout on the road

Recency bias weighs heavily in these situations, but these last few weeks have definitely felt like one of the low points of Tom Izzo’s tenure with Michigan State basketball. On Tuesday, the Spartans lost their third straight game with an 86-60 loss on the road to Iowa.

For Iowa, their star player Keegan Murray lit it up with 28 points. On MSU, there were few bright spots, but Malik Hall and Tyson Walker led the way in scoring despite coming off the bench.

The only truly fun moment in this one for MSU fans was that we got 5 minutes from Keon Coleman, who scored 3 points off the bench. He has become a fun anomaly for Spartan fans, as the wide receiver has looked to score every time he touches the floor even in closing seconds of a game, and his hustle and effort might be a welcome sight to a program that has been struggling with that of late.

‘Monster’ catfish reeled through ice during epic Iowa sunset

An Iowa angler who was ice fishing with minnows recently on Lake Manawa was surprised by the “constant power” exhibited by the 34-pound flathead catfish at the end of his line.

An Iowa angler who was ice fishing with minnows recently on Lake Manawa was surprised by the “constant power” exhibited by the massive catfish at the end of his line.

“The fight was unlike anything I’ve ever caught through the ice,” the Council Bluffs resident told Field & Stream. “It was constant power. It was a whole new battle to get that big of a fish to turn its head on a rod and reel that wasn’t meant for something of its size.”

The flathead catfish, caught during a spectacular sunset on Jan. 31, tipped a scale at 34 pounds before Campbell placed the fish back into the hole and watched it swim free.

He told Outdoor Life: “I only caught one fish that night but it took us the whole night to get it in.”

The catch caught the attention of the Iowa Department of Natural Resources, which on Wednesday shared the news via Facebook.

“Surprise! That’s no panfish. That’s a 40-inch, 34-pound Iowa Master Angler flathead catfish!” the agency exclaimed. “Gavin Campbell was recently ice fishing Lake Manawa when he pulled this monster from the ice.”

Many of the comments pertained to the beautiful sunset on display in the image captured by Campbell’s friend,  Ryan Higginbotham.

Iowa’s Master Angler Program recognizes exceptional catches in state waters.

Campbell told Field & Stream that it was his largest-ever ice-fishing catch.

For the sake of comparison, however, the Iowa state record for flathead catfish stands at 81 pounds. The behemoth was caught at Ellis Lake in 1958.

The all-tackle world record is the 1998 catch of a 123-pound flathead catfish at Elk City Reservoir in Kansas.

247Sports insider projects two ‘23 players to commit to Notre Dame

These two would be great additions to the ‘23 Irish class

The Irish have been hard at work on the recruiting trail and one Irish insider believes that it will eventually pay off. Tom Loy of 247Sports has recently put in two crystal ball picks for 2023 prospects that Notre Dame could eventually land.

The first is Illinois offensive lineman Charles Jagusah, a six-foot-six-inch and 308-pound mauler from Rock Island. 247Sports ranks him as a Top-100 prospect, the number one player in the state and the eighth best offensive tackle in the country. Jagusah currently has offers from Michigan, Iowa, Oklahoma, Wisconsin and others.

The other player that Loy believes will pledge to the Irish is Massachusetts athlete Preston Zinter. He also holds a Michigan offer along with Auburn, Georgia, LSU and others. At six-foot-six-inch and 215-pounds Zinter projects to play on defense, either at safety or linebacker.

This is great news for the Irish as they currently have gotten off to a fast start in the 2023 class.

Gene Elliott named Golfweek’s 2021 Yancy Ford winner

Thea ward is presented to an individual who has made significant contributions to senior-amateur golf.

The Yancey Ford Award is presented annually by Golfweek to an individual who has made significant contributions to senior-amateur golf. This year it will be presented on January 16, 2022, at Tampa Palms CC following the first round of the Golfweek Player of the Year Classic.

Gene Elliott may just be the most fitting recipient of the award.

The Bettendorf, Iowa, native has created an impact well beyond the Hawkeye state. Gene has competed on the national level his whole career. With both British and U.S. Senior Amateur victories in 2021, Elliott has plenty to be thankful for as the calendar turns to 2022.

However, it’s what Elliott has done off the course that has piqued the interests of the Yancy Ford Award committee. Helping save the Iowa Golf Association (IGA) back in the late 1990s and early 2000s, Elliott has been a big part of what the IGA has become.

“It was kind of a turbulent time,” Elliott told Golfweek. ”I just want[ed] to make golf better.”

Elliott did just that. After a couple of years on various boards for the IGA, Elliott revamped the state match play tournament. The event had been defunct since before he got to the IGA, but after getting other events to better courses and helping rebuild the IGA’s reputation, Elliott got the green light to reassert an event that is held in high regard across most state golf associations.

Revamping the Iowa State Match Play, being a part of the USGA mid-am committee for seven years (1999-2006), and being a part of the IGA’s board of directors for 16 years (2004-2019) helped earn Elliott an Iowa Golf Association Hall of Fame induction in 2012 at the age of 50.

In his letter nominating Elliott, close friend and 2011 Iowa Golf Hall of Fame inductee, Mike McCoy said, “Gene has conducted himself as a true gentleman throughout his life both on and off the golf course. He has developed friendships throughout the golf world and is universally respected and liked by all.”

Current IGA CEO and executive director Chad Pitts spoke for everyone at the IGA when he told Golfweek that he did not want to see Elliott leave the Board of Directors in 2019. But rules are rules and Elliott exited the IGA’s Board of Directors in 2019 but still plays a role with the association here and there.

As good as his work is off the course, his volunteerism in golf is overshadowed by his playing career as Elliott is the top ranked senior in the World Amateur Golf Rankings and has won twelve of his 27 Iowa majors since turning 50.

Now with a Yancy Ford award to add to the ever-growing Elliott home trophy case, Elliott’s 30+ years of growing the game in the Hawkeye state and around the world, have been formally recognized.

12 most-watched college football games of 2021

How many of these 12 did you tune in for?

The college football regular season has officially come and gone after Army and Navy’s annual battle last Saturday and we now know which games brought the highest viewership in.

Despite Alabama and Georgia’s meeting in the SEC Championship being the only battle between two eventual College Football Playoff teams this season, it actually didn’t take home the top spot.

Notre Dame showed up on the list just once this season after being included in a few of the very top spots a season ago.

So what else made the list and what game ultimately took home the highest viewership?

Here are the 12 most-viewed college football games of 2021 according to Stewart Mandel of The Athletic.

Nations top safety recruit chooses to stay home

Xavier Nwankpa is rated as the nation’s top safety in the 2022 recruiting class and will be remaining close to home to play college football

Xavier Nwankpa is rated as the nation’s top safety recruit in the 2022 cycle and the high school senior is staying home.  Nwankpa, an Altoon, Iowa native announced on Wednesday that he’d be attending college at the University of Iowa.

Nwankpa chose the Hawkeyes out of an offer list that included over 30 programs.  Iowa was his choice after he listed Notre Dame and Ohio State as his other finalists.  He is ranked by 247Sports as the nation’s top safety recruit and the 11th overall prospect nationally.

We predicted today that Notre Dame was unlikely to win his services like anyone else, I always find myself holding out even a little hope whenever there is a Notre Dame hat on such an elite players table of finalists.

Notre Dame a finalist as nation’s top safety set to announce college decision

Do the Irish still have some sort of hope here?

One of the best safeties in the entire 2022 recruiting cycle nationally will be announcing his college commitment on Wednesday night and the good news for Notre Dame is that they’re one of three finalists.  There may be some bad news as well but we’ll get to that in a minute.

Xavier Nwankpa has a five-star rating at 247Sports as they list him as nation’s top safety in the 2022 class and 11th best player overall.  Nwankpa checks in at 6-2, 190-pounds and starred at Southeast Polk High School in Pleasant Hill, Iowa and will announce his college decision at 5 p.m. ET in his school’s auditorium.

Notre Dame is a finalist for Nwankpa along with Iowa and Ohio State.  Based on Marcus Freeman spending his time on the west coast while Nwankpa has tweeted photos from visits with both Ryan Day and Kirk Ferentz this week, it’d seem that the Irish are an underdog compared to the Buckeyes and Hawkeyes here.

That said, I’d be thrilled to be wrong about this later today.

ESPN releases Power Rankings through championship weekend

At least the Irish improved in these rankings.

With the conference championship games complete, we now know which teams are in the College Football Playoff. Sadly but not surprisingly, the field does not include Notre Dame. While it’s of little consolation, the Irish did move up a spot from last week in the weekly power rankings released by ESPN. Here are the top 10 teams in the power rankings to this point:

ESPN’s College GameDay selects Championship Weekend winners

Who will be crowned conference champions?

The final weekend of the regular season is upon us, it went quick didn’t it? The Irish are at home, watching what happens today, hoping for some chaos to happen to sneak into the College Football Playoff for the second consecutive season. The feel is different, especially after Brian Kelly left and Marcus Freeman is set to take over. Notre Dame needs chaos and if you take a look below, see if Kirk Herbstreit, Desmond Howard, Lee Corso and guest Zac Brown select as winner.
