Big 12 Power Rankings after Week 12: Iowa State, Oklahoma rising

After a limited week of Big 12 action with just four teams, the Iowa State Cyclones and Oklahoma Sooners are separating themselves.

The Big 12 Conference had three of the top five teams in action. The early game being Kansas State visiting Iowa State. The nightcap featured Oklahoma State against Oklahoma in the Bedlam game. The Cyclones took care of the Kansas State Wildcats relatively easily. That game was over by halftime with a 35-0 lead. They scored just 10 in the second half to win 45-0.

The Cowboys found themselves down early on in this game against the Oklahoma Sooners. OU was up 21-0 in the first quarter before the Cowboys could find a way back into the game. Spencer Sanders would be knocked out of the game early with a possible concussion. The team went with freshman passer Shane Illingworth. The score at the half was 27-13. Heading into the fourth quarter, Spencer Rattler and Oklahoma extended the lead to 34-13.

Spencer Sanders would come back into the game into the fourth quarter but it was more of the same. The Cowboys offense just couldn’t put together any sustained drives to challenge the Sooners.

A look at the Big 12 Conference power rankings heading into the final three weeks.

What the Big 12 Standings could look like after Saturday

A breakdown on Saturday’s slate of games and how they impact the Big 12 Championship race. Texas looks to rise in the standings.

The Texas Longhorns are currently enjoying a second-straight bye week, thanks to the coronavirus. Their game has been pushed back to Dec. 12, where they will travel to Lawrence for that game. Their next game comes Friday against the Iowa State Cyclones at home. The Longhorns technically had over two weeks to prepare for this game. Tom Herman is 5-0 when having multiple weeks to prepare for a team not named Maryland.

While that game is a little less than a week away, the Big 12 Conference has two games with huge title implications on the line. Kansas State (4-2) will travel to Ames to take on Iowa State (5-1). Oklahoma State (4-1) will face Oklahoma (4-2) in their Bedlam series. A lot will be on the line today.

The Wildcats are currently reeling after dropping two straight games. Iowa State has been the surprise team with their lone loss coming against Oklahoma State by three points. The red hot team is the Oklahoma Sooners who have rattled off four-straight wins that started against Texas in the Red River Shootout.

Texas Longhorns now have the third-best odds to win the Big 12 per BetMGM

When the season started the oddsmakers had the Texas Longhorns and Oklahoma Sooners the top teams. Now there is a new second team, not Texas

[jwplayer zuKNSXJe]

Before the 2020 college football season kicked off there were two teams listed as favorites to win the Big 12 Conference. One team was of course the Oklahoma Sooners, they have won the title in five-straight seasons. The other team right at the top with them were the Texas Longhorns. Many felt that it would be a return matchup to the 2018 clash at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. Those odds were according to BetMGM.

Fast forward to week 11 of the college football season and the Longhorns no longer find themselves as the No. 2 favorite for the Big 12 Championship. Texas is now tied for third in the odds to win it all. Losing back-to-back games in early October will do that to you. In fact as a ranked team they lost both games to unranked opponents. However, they are still in the thick of the race alongside four other teams.

BetMGM odds to win the Big 12

  1. Oklahoma (+100)
  2. Iowa State (+300)
  3. Texas/Oklahoma State (+375)
  4. Kansas State (+4000)
  5. West Virginia (+50000)

Texas Football: Longhorns among four Big 12 teams in ESPN’s power rankings

The weekly college football power rankings listed four Big 12 teams in their top 25, where are the Texas Longhorns and the other three teams

There wasn’t much news for the Texas Longhorns over the weekend. All four of the teams they are chasing in the race to the Big 12 title game were on a bye. West Virginia, Texas Christian, Texas Tech and Baylor were the teams in action. The Longhorns get ready for Kansas this week in the first of their final three games to close out the season.

Their goal is simple, win out and hope you get a little help in getting a Big 12 Championship game berth. The upcoming week will hopefully clear up the picture a little bit in terms of who will and who won’t be in the race for the title game.

Chris Low of ESPN produced his weekly power rankings in which he has four teams from the Big 12 listed. Here is how it all breaks down according to Low.

No. 24 Texas Longhorns

At least five teams are still alive in the Big 12 race, including Texas. The Longhorns were off this week after winning three in a row. Their two defeats were heartbreakers — a 53-45 loss in four overtimes to Oklahoma and a 33-31 loss to TCU — although they’ve been better on defense of late. Two of their final three games are on the road, but the pivotal matchup will be at home against Iowa State the Friday after Thanksgiving.

Other Big 12 Teams in the Top 25 Power Rankings

  • No. 15- Oklahoma State Cowboys
  • No. 16- Iowa State Cyclones
  • No. 17- Oklahoma Sooners

Big 12 Power Rankings ahead of Texas-KU, Bedlam

Week 11 of the Big 12 season is firmly in the books. Longhorns Wire takes a look at the power rankings for all 10 teams in the conference.

Another Big 12 slate of games now in the books. In the early game it was the Texas Christian Horned Frogs heading to Morgantown, West Virginia. The Mountaineers led this one wire to wire. They scored their first touchdown on a 15-play drive that went 99 yards after forcing a punt on the opening possession.

West Virginia won 24-6 to try and stay with the top teams in the conference. TCU lost their fourth game of the year, all four have come outside the state of Texas. They fell to 3-4 after this game. The afternoon game came in Lubbock where the Texas Tech Red Raiders hosted the Baylor Bears.

After falling behind 23-12 heading into the fourth quarter, the Red Raiders scored 12 unanswered to beat Baylor 24-23. The rough start for Dave Aranda continues after dropping five straight games.

We breakdown the weekly Big 12 Power Rankings.

Fox Sports Analysts discuss the team to beat in the Big 12

During the pregame show, the Fox CFB analysts discussed their team in beat in the Big 12. Two believe OU-Texas will be the championship game

On the pregame show before the Baylor Bears and Texas Tech Red Raiders game, the College Football on Fox analysts discussed the Big 12 Conference. On the topic of who is the team to beat, none of the analysts picked the Texas Longhorns.

“Look at the standings right now, it is going to look different in three weeks” Brady Quinn stated. “I’m telling you we are going to see a rematch of the Red River Showdown.” Quinn went on to say that he didn’t buy into the other teams that will still have to play each other. He continued, “when it’s all said and done we are going to see an epic second showing of the Red River Showdown between Oklahoma and Texas.”

Quinn didn’t pick his team to beat but he firmly believes in the rematch from Oct. 10 in Dallas, Texas. Reggie Bush picked the Iowa State Cyclones, who the Longhorns will face in two weeks in Austin. Matt Leinart went with the Oklahoma State Cowboys because of their trio of offensive weapons and their defense.

Urban Meyer on the other hand did make a choice going with the Oklahoma Sooners as the team to beat. However, much like Quinn his pick for the Big 12 Championship game is Texas and Oklahoma. “I think Oklahoma is the most talented team in the Big 12.” Meyer continued, “at the end of the year they will be standing. Also how do you pick agains [Sam] Ehlinger?”
