Iowa at Iowa State odds, picks and prediction

Analyzing Saturday’s Iowa at Iowa State odds and lines, with college football expert picks, predictions and best bets.

The No. 12 Iowa Hawkeyes (1-0) visit in-state rival No. 10 Iowa State Cyclones (1-0) Saturday at Jack Trice Stadium in the return of the annual Cy-Hawk game. Kickoff is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. ET. Below, we look at the Iowa vs. Iowa State odds and lines, and make our expert college football picks, predictions and bets.

Rankings according to the AFCA Coaches Poll powered by USA TODAY Sports.

Iowa steamrolled Big Ten-rival Indiana 34-6 as 3.5-point home favorites in Week 1. The Hawkeyes held the Hoosiers to 77 rushing yards on 31 carries, 156 passing yards on a 42.4% completion rate and forced 3 turnovers.

Iowa State squeaked past Northern Iowa with an uninspiring 16-10 victory as 28.5-point road favorites. The Cyclones showed up defensively and allowed just 45 rushing yards on 26 carries and added 2 interceptions. However, Iowa State struggled on third down efficiency on the offensive side and converted just five of 14 attempts.

The 2020 Cy-Hawk game was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic but Iowa has won five straight meetings, and six of the last seven games, against Iowa State.

Iowa at Iowa State odds, lines, picks and predictions

Prediction

Iowa State 27, Iowa 20

Money line

PASS with a slight “lean” to Iowa State (-205) because I am tinkering with the idea of throwing it into a parlay with another similarly priced favorite for a plus-money payout since I’m comfortable laying it with the Cyclones.

Against the spread

Most of the college football/sports betting podcasts that I listen to were blown away with how easily Iowa destroyed an Indiana team that had a breakout season in 2020. Likewise, most of the college football community was rightfully disappointed with Iowa State’s Week 1 performance.

This correlates with the betting splits that show Iowa +3.5 (-105) getting nearly 60% of the cash and almost 75% of the bets wagered on it, according to Pregame.com.

The oddsmakers aren’t overreacting by Iowa State’s opening game stinker and Iowa’s impressive Week 1 outing so neither should we. Iowa State ranks fourth in ESPN college football guru Bill Connelly’s 2021 returning production table and almost beat the mighty Oklahoma Sooners twice last year.

Furthermore, Iowa State has covered two of the past three Cy-Hawk games and NFL front offices have been trying to poach Cyclones head coach Matt Campbell from college football for a few offseasons now. Rumor has it Campbell turned down a head coaching offer for generational wealth to return to Iowa State and make a run at the College Football Playoff.

Campell will get the Cyclones back on track and slaughter the trendy underdog Iowa has become. GIMME IOWA STATE -3.5 (-120) for 1.25 units.

Stream college football games on ESPN+ by signing up here.

Over/Under

Slight “LEAN” to the UNDER 46.5 (-108) for a tiny wager because I much prefer the Iowa State side, we are getting “Reverse Line Movement” here with total getting moved up despite a ton of pro-Under money and it does feel a little too obvious.

The Under is 4-1-1 in the last six Cy-Hawk games, Iowa State has played the Under in six consecutive contests dating back to last season and Iowa has gone Under the total in three of its last four games.

Both defenses are nasty and the offensive line is each team’s best unit on the other side of the ball so we should see an epic battle in the trenches.

First look: Iowa at Iowa State odds and lines, a tight battle for the Cy-Hawk

Previewing the college football Week 2 matchup between Iowa Hawkeyes and Iowa State Cyclones, with odds, trends and head-to-head records.

The Cy-Hawk Trophy is up for grabs on Saturday when the Iowa Hawkeyes (1-0) and Iowa State Cyclones (1-0) square off at Jack Trice Stadium. Kickoff is set for 4:30 p.m. ET. Below, we look at Iowa at Iowa State odds and lines; check back for our college football picks and predictions.

Both teams are ranked in the USA TODAY AFCA Coaches Poll entering the 68th edition of this in-state rivalry. The preseason No. 18 Hawkeyes looked dominant in its debut, beating No. 17 Indiana 34-6 last week behind a defense that allowed just 233 total yards and saw DB Riley Moss return two interceptions for touchdowns.

No. 8 Iowa State looked rustier in its tune-up last week. They were a 29-point favorite against FCS opponent Northern Iowa but squeaked by in a 16-10 win. This is a consensus top-10 Cyclone team that won six of its last seven games in 2020 and might have been caught looking ahead to this in-state showdown.

Iowa at Iowa State head-to-head

Iowa holds the series lead, 45-22, and has won each of the last five games They have also won 12 of the last 17 dating back to 2003. The last three games have all been close—2017’s matchup went to overtime, 2018’s game ended 13-3 and the 2019 version was a 19-18 thriller. Iowa and Iowa State didn’t play each other in 2020 since the Big Ten played a conference-only schedule.

Iowa covered five of their last six games in 2020, while Iowa State went 7-5 ATS last season.

Northern Iowa at Iowa State odds, expert picks and prediction

Analyzing Saturday’s Northern Iowa at Iowa State odds and lines, with college football expert picks, predictions and best bets.

The Northern Iowa Panthers and Iowa State Cyclones meet Saturday at Jack Trice Stadium in Ames. Kickoff is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. ET and the game can be viewed on ESPN+. Below, we look at the Northern Iowa vs. Iowa State odds and lines, and make our expert college football picks, predictions and bets.

UNI played a spring schedule and went 3-4. The offense was limited to 21 or fewer points in six of those seven outings. The Panthers aren’t ranked in the FCS top 25, although they did receive points.

Iowa State is certainly in the rankings. In fact, it’s No. 8 in the AFCA Coaches Poll powered by USA TODAY Sports. The Cyclones finished ninth in 2020 for their highest-ever ranking to close a season.

QB Brock Purdy, RB Breece Hall and TE Charlie Kolar are all back, as is leading WR Xavier Hutchinson. That group was instrumental in helping the Cyclones to 6.3 yards per play, third in the Big 12. On defense, DE Will McDonald IV and LB Mike Rose are bona fide stars.

Northern Iowa at Iowa State odds, lines, picks and predictions

Prediction

Iowa State 51, Northern Iowa 6

Money line

There is never a reason to risk $100 to win just $1, so nix Iowa State (-10000) from the money line plans and look to the spread instead.

AVOID.

Against the spread

IOWA STATE -31.5 (-105) is a very good play laying the big number. The Cyclones are stacked on both sides of the ball, and they’re a legitimate College Football Playoff contender from the Big 12.

Northern Iowa +31.5 (-120) has been a powerhouse in the FCS in the past, but it’s a shell of its former self and just completed a mediocre spring season a few months ago. The Panthers are going to get pounded in this money game visit.

Over/Under

OVER 49.5 (-115) is the way to go, and I wouldn’t be surprised if Iowa State takes care of the number without help from UNI. Iowa State was good for 32.9 points per game last season and should find plenty of open spaces against the undermanned Panthers.

Iowa State vs. Oklahoma odds, picks and prediction

Previewing Wednesday’s Iowa State Cyclones vs. Oklahoma Sooners odds and lines, with college basketball betting picks, tips and predictions.

The No. 10-seed Iowa State Cyclones (2-21, 0-18 Big 12) meet the No. 7-seed Oklahoma Sooners (14-9, 9-8) in the first round of the Big 12 Tournament at T-Mobile Center in Kansas City, Kan., Wednesday for a 9:30 p.m. ET tip-off. Below, we analyze the Iowa State-Oklahoma odds and lines, with NCAA college basketball picks and predictions.

Iowa State vs. Oklahoma: Odds, spread and lines

Odds via BetMGM; access USA TODAY Sports’ betting odds for a full list. Lines last updated at 8:15 a.m. ET.

  • Money line: Iowa State +525 (bet $100 to win $525) | Oklahoma -750 (bet $750 to win $100)
  • Against the spread/ATS: Iowa State +11.5 (-110) | Oklahoma -11.5 (-110)
  • Over/Under: 140.5 (O: -115 | U: -105)

Iowa State vs. Oklahoma: Three things to know

  1. Iowa State lost every single conference game this season, although it did come within five last time out at Kansas State of erasing that goose egg. But it was a loss, and a push, nonetheless. The Cyclones were also 0-3-1 ATS across the final four outings.
  2. Oklahoma finished the season on a four-game slide, although it was a series of close calls. They lost by five at K-State Feb. 23, they lost by four in OT at home against Oklahoma State Feb. 27, and by four in regulation in Stillwater, Okla., March 1. They were also edged 69-65 against Texas Thursday in the regular-season finale. They haven’t covered in the past five games dating back to Feb. 13 at West Virginia.
  3. These teams met twice in the regular season, with Oklahoma winning 66-56 in Iowa as an 11.5-point favorite Feb. 20, while the Sooners won on their home floor 79-72 Feb. 6 as 14-point favorites.

Iowa State vs. Oklahoma: Odds, lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Oklahoma 74, Iowa State 66

Money line (ML)

There is nearly zero chance Oklahoma (-750) gets tripped up against Iowa State (+525), a team that went winless in Big 12 conference play. Still, you can’t risk seven-and-a-half times your potential return on a team that ended the season on a four-game skid. PASS.

Play our new free daily Pick’em Challenge and win! Play now!

Against the spread (ATS)

IOWA STATE +11.5 (-110) lost both regular-season meetings against Oklahoma -11.5 (-110), but the Cyclones covered both games. The Sooners’ average margin of victory against the Cyclones was 8.5 per game, and you can expect I-State to keep it within single digits in this one, too, before they bow out of the conference tourney.

Over/Under (O/U)

The TOTAL 140.5 is too close to call. The Over/Under split in the two regular-season meetings. If there was a lean, it would be to the Under, as Iowa State has averaged just 65.3 PPG. Of course, they’re allowing 76.6 PPG to rank 305th in the nation defensively. The best bet is to stay away and just focus on the spread. PASS.

Iowa State at Texas Tech odds, picks and prediction

Previewing Thursday’s Iowa State at Texas Tech odds and lines, with college basketball betting picks, tips and predictions.

The Iowa State Cyclones (2-19 overall, 0-16 Big 12) take on the Texas Tech Red Raiders (16-8, 8-7) in a Thursday evening (7 p.m. ET) clash at United Supermarkets Arena in Lubbock, Texas. Below, we analyze the Iowa State-Texas Tech odds and lines, with NCAA college basketball picks and predictions.

Texas Tech is No. 18 in the Ferris Mowers Coaches Poll powered by USA TODAY Sports.

Iowa State at Texas Tech: Odds, spread and lines

  • Money line: Iowa State +1150 (bet $100 to win $1,150) | Texas Tech -3000 (bet $3,000 to win $100)
  • Against the spread/ATS: Iowa State +16.5 (-110) | Texas Tech -16.5 (-110)
  • Over/Under: 136.5 (O: -110 | U: -110)

Iowa State at Texas Tech: Three things to know

  1. Iowa State lost, 81-67, against Texas Tuesday night. The Cyclones were outscored, 20-7, on foul shots. ISU has averaged just 7.0 free-throw attempts over its last four games. For the season, the Cyclones are averaging just 11.6 FTA per contest (246th NCAA-I).
  2. The Red Raiders are coming off  back-to-back wins after enduring a three-game losing streak. Texas Tech beat Texas Saturday and TCU on Tuesday. The Raiders allowed a combined 118 points over their two recent wins; that lowered their season points-per-game-allowed average to 62.6. That mark ranks 20th in the nation.
  3. TTU shot a season-high 58.9% from the floor in a 91-64 victory at Iowa State Jan. 9. The 27-point victory marks the Raiders’ largest margin in a Big 12 game this season.

No. Just … no.

Against the spread (ATS)

The Red Raiders are much the better team at both ends of the floor, but in a game that may not reach the mid-130s, a 16-1/2-point tag is a big ask. PASS.

Over/Under (O/U)

Junior G Rasir Bolton is listed as questionable with an ankle injury. Bolton is the Cyclones’ leading scorer (15.4 points per game) and assist man (3.9 per game). ISU’s defense has been improving during the season; TTU’s had been on the decline, but recent games have righted the ship at that end of the floor. And analytics fully back the Raiders’ placement in the points-per-game-allowed department.

TAKE THE UNDER 136.5 (-110).

  • Over/Under: 142.5 (O: -110 | U: -110)

Texas at Iowa State : Three things to know

  1. Winless-in-the-league Iowa State played the Longhorns tough when these two teams met Jan. 5 in Austin, Texas. UT won that game, 78-72, despite being out-rebounded by the Cyclones, 39-28. Six of ISU’s 15 conference losses have been by a two-possession margin or less.
  2. Texas was felled 68-59 by Texas Tech Saturday. The loss marked the Longhorns’ second this season against the Red Raiders, and it sank UT’s record since Jan. 14 to 4-6. Texas shot just 34.7% from the field Saturday, and the ‘Horns have shot just 36.4 over their last two games.
  3. The Longhorns are a solid rebounding team adept at turning offensive boards into second-chance points. Iowa State has yielded 10.9 offensive rebounds per game on the season. That figure is even higher (11.6) over the Cyclones’ last seven games.

Tip-off for the lopsided matchup is scheduled for 8 p.m. ET at Ferrell Center in Waco, Texas. Below, we analyze the Iowa State-Baylor college basketball odds and lines, with picks and predictions.

Rankings courtesy of the Ferris Mowers Coaches Poll powered by USA TODAY Sports.

Baylor sits atop the Big 12 standings, holding a two-game lead over Oklahoma. Iowa State is last thanks to a winless conference record.

  • Over/Under: 147.5 (O: -110 | U: -110)

Iowa State at Baylor: Three things to know

  1. Iowa State, losers of 12 straight, hasn’t won since Dec. 20 when it beat Jackson State 60-45 in a non-conference game. The Cyclones have lost each of their last four games by double digits. They did cover the spread Saturday despite falling to current-No. 8 Oklahoma 66-56 as 11.5-point underdogs. Junior G Raisir Bolton leads the Cyclones in scoring (15.7 points per game), rebounds (4.8 RPG), assists (3.9 APG) and steals (1.4 SPG).
  2. Baylor’s last five games were postponed due to a COVID-19 pause within the program. The Bears haven’t played since Feb. 2 when they won at then-No. 6 Texas 83-69 as 4.5-point favorites. Junior G Jared Butler’s 17.0 PPG leads four Bears in double figures. He also has a team-best 2.4 SPG, while junior G Davion Mitchell averages a team-best 5.8 APG and sophomore F Jonathan Tchamwa Tchatchoua is the top rebounder (6.4 RPG).
  3. Baylor beat Iowa State 76-65 in early January with ISU covering as 15.5-point home underdogs. The Cyclones actually led 55-53 with 10:10 remaining, but the Bears scored the next 13 points in closing with a 23-10 run.

Against the spread (ATS)

Back BAYLOR -23.5 (-110). Don’t be afraid of rust after the layoff.

When No. 1 Gonzaga came off a 16-day COVID-19 pause, it beat then-No. 3 Iowa 99-88, covering as a 4.5-point favorite.

When No. 3 Michigan came off a 22-day layoff, it won at Wisconsin 67-59 and covered as a 1-point-dog.

Sure, those spreads weren’t even close to the 23.5 Baylor is laying Tuesday, but Iowa State is awful. The Cyclones average 65.6 PPG (ranking 304th in the country) and 28.2 RPG (328th) with a 42% field-goal percentage (280th). Defensively, they allow 77.0 PPG (309th), 36.8 RPG (335th) and a 45.9% FG percentage (278th).

This should be over before halftime.

ATS: Iowa State 7-11 | Baylor 13-4

Over/Under (O/U)

OVER 147.5 (-110) is the STRONGEST PLAY – 1½ times your usual wager. Baylor, which will be eager to get back on the court, averages 87.0 PPG to rank second in the country (behind Gonzaga’s 93.4 PPG).

Iowa State has allowed 85.2 PPG across its last five road games.

Enough said.

O/U records: Iowa State 10-8 | Baylor 9-8

Kansas at Iowa State odds, picks and prediction

Previewing Saturday’s Kansas Jayhawks at Iowa State Cyclones odds and lines, with college basketball betting picks, tips and predictions.

The Kansas Jayhawks (14-7 overall, 8-5 Big 12) visit the Iowa State Cyclones (2-13, 0-10) in a Saturday afternoon contest tipping off at 3 p.m. ET at James H. Hilton Coliseum in Ames, Iowa. Below, we analyze the Kansas-Iowa State college basketball odds and lines, with picks and predictions.

Kansas at Iowa State: Odds, spread and lines

Odds via BetMGM; access USA TODAY Sports’ betting odds for a full list. Lines last updated at 10:25 a.m. ET.

  • Money line: Kansas -750 (bet $750 to win $100) | Iowa State +525 (bet $100 to win $525)
  • Against the spread/ATS: Kansas -11.5 (-110) | Iowa State +11.5 (-110)
  • Over/Under: 145.5 (O: -115 | U: -105)

Kansas at Iowa State: Three things to know

  1. ISU hasn’t won a Big 12 game since Feb. 25 of last season and heads into Saturday’s game on a nine-game losing streak this season. Over that stretch, the Cyclones have been outshot 49.8% to 40.4% from the field.
  2. This game in Ames closes out a home-and-home series. After defeating Oklahoma State 78-66 Monday, the Jayhawks bounced the Cyclones 97-64 in Lawrence, Ks., Thursday. Kansas shot 52.8% from the floor in that game including a 12-for-26 effort from 3-point-land.
  3. Kansas figures as a top-40 squad in defensive efficiency. The Jayhawks have held foes under 40% in shooting in four of their last six games. Kansas also creates a lot of turnovers (13.6 per game over eight games since Jan. 18), and that feeds an above-average transition game.

Kansas at Iowa State: Odds, lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Kansas 78, Iowa State 68

Money line (ML)

PASS, but keep an eye on the underdog price for the Cyclones. Figuring ISU as a 15% proposition, a tag in the +575 neighborhood would make for a small profit margin.

Play our new free daily Pick’em Challenge and win! Play now!

Against the spread (ATS)

Including Thursday’s ATS loss to these Jayhawks as 15-point underdogs, the Cyclones are 4-2 against the number in their last six games as double-digit underdogs.

Recent road games haven’t gone well for Kansas and this many points in the back half of a conference home-and-home spells value for Iowa State bettors.

TAKE THE CYCLONES +11.5 (-110).

Over/Under (O/U)

The Over is a combined 22-13 in Jayhawks and Cyclones games this winter but Saturday’s total looks to be a well-made number, and the upside carries a premium.

PASS.

West Virginia at Iowa State odds, picks and prediction

Previewing Tuesday’s West Virginia Mountaineers at Iowa State Cyclones odds and lines, with college basketball picks, tips and predictions.

The West Virginia Mountaineers (11-5) travel to meet the Iowa State Cyclones (2-9) at Hilton Coliseum in Ames, Iowa for a 7 p.m. ET tip Tuesday. Below, we analyze the West Virginia-Iowa State college basketball odds and lines, with picks and predictions.

West Virginia at Iowa State: Odds, spread and lines

Odds via BetMGM; access USA TODAY Sports’ betting odds for a full list. Lines last updated at 9 a.m. ET.

  • Money line: West Virginia -800 (bet $800 to win $100) | Iowa State +550 (bet $100 to win $550)
  • Against the spread/ATS: West Virginia -11.5 (-110) | Iowa State +11.5 (-110)
  • Over/Under: 145.5 (O: -110 | U: -110)

West Virginia at Iowa State: Three things to know

  1. West Virginia is looking to bounce back from an 85-80 upset loss at home against Florida in the SEC/Big 12 Challenge Saturday. The Mountaineers won and covered the spread in each of their past two on the road.
  2. Iowa State got spanked in the SEC/Big 12 Challenge, losing 95-56 at Mississippi State as the Over (135.5) easily connected. I-State enters on a five-game skid, and it has lost nine of its last 10 overall. The Cyclones are also 0-3 ATS in their last three games, and they’re 3-8 ATS on the season.
  3. These teams met in Morgantown Dec. 18, and the Mountaineers picked up a 70-65 win as 14.5-point favorites as the Under (140) cashed. Iowa State was covering for the entire game.

West Virginia at Iowa State: Odds, lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

West Virginia 87, Iowa State 62

Money line (ML)

West Virginia (-800) is easily the better team here, and Iowa State has been god awful lately. Remember, the Cyclones played the Mountaineers tough in Morgantown earlier this season, so it’s just not worth risking eight times your potential return. PASS, and look to the spread instead.

Against the spread (ATS)

WEST VIRGINIA -11.5 (-110) was taken to the mat by Iowa State back in December, and you can forget about that. The Cyclones have lost five in a row, including three straight by 21 or more points.

They have also allowed 88.7 points per game during that ugly stretch. ISU looks like it has thrown in the towel. Take advantage.

Over/Under (O/U)

OVER 145.5 (-110) is the way to go, as the Cyclones have been a turnstile on defense in recent games. West Virginia doesn’t really pile up the points, averaging just 75.7 points per game, but it is averaging 84.0 PPG across its past two.

It’s a good time for the Mountaineers to start hitting their stride offensively.

Iowa State at Texas odds, picks and prediction

Previewing Tuesday’s Iowa State Cyclones at Texas Longhorns sports betting odds and lines, with college basketball betting picks, tips and predictions.

The Iowa State Cyclones (2-5 overall, 0-3 Big 12) tangle with the Texas Longhorns (8-1, 2-0) Tuesday night at 8 p.m. ET at Frank C. Erwin Jr. Center in Austin, Texas. Below, we analyze the Iowa State-Texas college basketball betting odds and lines, with picks and predictions.

Texas is No. 4 in the Men’s Basketball Coaches Poll powered by USA TODAY Sports.

Iowa State at Texas: Betting odds, spread and lines

Odds via BetMGM; access USA TODAY Sports’ betting odds for a full list. Lines last updated Tuesday at 8:50 a.m. ET.

  • Money line: Iowa State +575 (bet $100 to win $575) | Texas -900 (bet $900 to win $100)
  • Against the spread/ATS: Iowa State +12.5 (-120) | Texas -12.5 (+100)
  • Over/Under: 139.5 (O: -110 | U: -110)

Iowa State at Texas: Three things to know

  1. The Cyclones have their work cut out for them in seeking their first Big 12 victory of the season. Over three in-conference losses, the Cyclones have turned the ball over 19.0 times per game while allowing 73.3 points per game. ISU is just 2-8 over its last 10 conference games, but one of those wins — an 81-52 Feb. 15 rout — was against these Longhorns.
  2. G Courtney Ramey paced the Longhorns in an impressive 84-59 win at Kansas Saturday. Ramey went 7-for-11 from the floor in notching an 18-point game. The junior is posting career highs in scoring (13.7 points per game) and assists (3.4 per game) through nine games.
  3. Texas has won 11 straight games when favored by double-digits at home. The Longhorns are 6-5 against the spread in such games and have covered in three of their last four contests.

Iowa State at Texas: Odds, betting lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Texas 77, Iowa State 63

Money line (ML)

Iowa State hasn’t won on the road since Feb. 16, 2019, a stretch of 16 straight games. Texas has played a solid schedule and is performing at an elite level at both ends of the floor. Pegging the figure at -900 misses the mark and offers some value for bigger bettors looking to avoid the big number to cover in a conference game.

TAKE THE LONGHORNS -900.

Against the spread (ATS)

The ‘Horns are 10-5 ATS in their last 15 games and 5-0 ATS in their last five home contests against Iowa State.

With strong offensive rebounding and the likelihood of a big advantage at the charity stripe, look for a double-digit lead that turns into a game-control exercise for the home five.

Figure on a 12-to-14-point cushion, so it’s WORTH THE RISK ON TEXAS -12.5 (+100).

Over/Under (O/U)

This one could be headed toward a 145 and fizzle all-too-easily in garbage time. PASS.
