The Kansas City Chiefs got off to a slow start in Super Bowl LIX against the Philadelphia Eagles, but the defending champions seemed to have turned a corner.

After an early touchdown by the Eagles to start the game via the controversial “brotherly shove” Kansas City found itself down seven points to start the game.

The Eagles were well on their way to another score when Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts threw a pass that was intercepted by Chiefs defensive back Bryan Cook, which gave Kansas City a chance to even the score.

Take a look at Cook’s epic interception in this video, which was posted to Twitter by the Chiefs’ official account:

Though Kansas City’s next drive ended in a punt after Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes was unable to get the team’s offense in gear, the defending champions are still very much in the game.

Chiefs finish the 2024 regular season with seven consecutive games without a turnover

Kansas City #Chiefs finish the 2024 regular season with seven consecutive games without a turnover | @EdEastonJr

The Kansas City Chiefs have set a franchise record for regular season wins with 15, and they accomplished it in the traditional sixteen games. An overlooked accomplishment was how they handled the football offensively to finish the year.

The Chiefs ended the 2024 campaign without committing a turnover over the last seven games. The previous turnover was a Patrick Mahomes interception in the Week 11 loss to the Buffalo Bills. Rookie fullback Carson Steele had his share of turnovers to start the season. In his press conference with reporters, he discussed players’ mindset regarding avoiding fumbles last week.

“Guys are more antsy about it,” said Steele, “especially the last couple (of) teams we’ve played. The Steelers were really big (at) knocking the ball out. So we try to learn from our mistakes and keep going.”

Since Week 12, the Chiefs have been a league-best +11 in turnover margin, and Kansas City finished +6 for the season. During that seven-game span, Mahomes hasn’t thrown an interception in 237 consecutive attempts, which is his longest career streak.

George Pickens refused to play reporter’s game regarding Week 17 INT

George Pickens showed maturity by avoiding controversy when questioned about the Week 17 interception.

George Pickens continues to have issues during the Steelers’ dedicated time for media availability, but fans may argue that the wide receiver showcased some maturity this time around.

Reporters have been digging for information regarding the Steelers’ costly Week 17 interception against the Kansas City Chiefs. Although QB Russell Wilson had shed light on what took place—confirming Pickens was to blame—reporters went straight to the horse’s mouth.

On Thursday, despite their previous struggles getting information out of the Steelers wide receiver, reporters asked Pickens to explain the miscommunication on the interception. Pickens, however, didn’t bite on the opportunity to throw his QB under the bus.

After being asked about Wilson’s comments on the mistake, Pickens attempted to shift the question back to the reporters:

“That’s what he said? Or is that what you said?”

He continued to play coy, choosing instead to decline further engagement with the question.

While he could be protecting his own self-interests, his ability to pull himself away from a situation that could only be described as a rock and a hard place proves his growth and maturity heading into Week 18 against the Cincinnati Bengals.

Chiefs DC Steve Spagnuolo appreciates rookie defensive back’s growth: ‘What we hoped for’

Kansas City #Chiefs defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo appreciates rookie Jaden Hicks’ growth: ‘What we hoped for’ | @EdEastonJr

Kansas City Chiefs defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo has enjoyed his unit’s success, slowing down opponents over the past two games. He singled out praise to rookie defensive back Jaden Hicks’ contributions In recent weeks.

“I think his growth process and curve has been really what we expected and really what we hoped for. i think he has just gotten better and better and better. I think he gets more confident every week. You know what i really like about him?” said Spagnuolo. “When we go through these walk-throughs, and we’re sitting there, and it’s more mental, he is into every snap, whether it’s a walk through its regular practice rep.”

Hicks secured his second consecutive week with an interception during Saturday’s victory over the Houston Texans. He has made the most of his time in the lineup, taking advantage of opportunities to grab takeaways when he is used as an additional defensive back.

“He’s anticipating things pre-snap. He’s doing all those things that you want your safe needs to do from a mental standpoint; that’s encouraging,” said Spagnuolo. “He’s gone out there and made a couple of plays on the ball, so that’s helpful.”

The regular season is winding down, and Hicks, as a rookie, is stepping his game up in preparation for his first postseason experience. He will be relied on more as he continues to make plays in the secondary weekly.

Spencer Rattler’s ball security will be tested vs. NFL’s best ballhawk

Spencer Rattler’s decision-making and ball security will be tested by the NFL’s best ballhawk on Monday night:

Spencer Rattler is stepping into his fourth start as the New Orleans Saints quarterback. It’s his first start since Week 8, and as long as Derek Carr remains out, Rattler will be the Saints’ starting quarterback. That stretch begins against the Green Bay Packers.

In last week’s contest, Rattler relieved Jake Haener and put on an improved performance. One of the rookie’s most glaring problems in his first stint was his issues protecting the football. He threw two interceptions in his first three games and fumble three times, too. As the Saints close out the season, Rattler must ensure he protects the football and avoids putting it in dangerous spots.

Rattler’s decision making will be put to the test this week, as Xavier McKinney is on the other side of the field. The Packers safety has seven interceptions, the most in the league.

McKinney’s presence should remain on Rattler’s mind. Rattler is going to take shots down the field, and McKinney is going to be waiting for the opportunity to get his hands on the ball.

Chiefs CB Trent McDuffie reflects on defensive performance vs. Texans: ‘Everybody just stuck together’

Kansas City #Chiefs CB Trent McDuffie reflects on defensive performance vs. Houston #Texans: ‘Everybody just stuck together’ | @EdEastonJr

The Kansas City Chiefs defense has increased their takeaways over the last two games, adding a missing dynamic from earlier in the season. All-Pro cornerback Trent McDuffie described the group’s energy during his postgame press conference after Saturday’s victory.

“I felt it. The energy with the team, the offense putting up points and controlling the ball, the defense making stops,” said McDuffie. “We let up a few third-and-longs, which we were disappointed with. Overall, everybody just stuck together. The energy was there on the sideline; you could just tell that guys were trying to get back in the groove of things. For me, it was really exciting to be a part of that.”

McDuffie secured another interception in Saturday’s victory over the Houston Texans, less than a week from getting his first career pick. He appreciated the coaching staff for preparing players for a short week.

“(Defensive Coordinator) Coach (Steve Spagnuolo) Spags has a big emphasis on the first drive and the last drive of every half,” said McDuffie. “Going back to the coaches during the week, we spent a lot of time in two minute and in situational (football), just making sure we know what we’re doing but also what they’re going to attack us with. I felt like, over the course of the year we’ve been hit with a few different things, but now that we’re getting to the later part of the year, we know what teams try to attack us with. Guys are starting to get comfortable with our play calls and trying to execute the calls correctly.”

The Chiefs’ defense has eight takeaways in two weeks, increasing its pressure and sacks of opposing quarterbacks. Over the next few days, they will prepare for the elusive Russell Wilson and the Pittsburgh Steelers on Christmas Day.

Chiefs vs. Texans: Trent McDuffie snags second career interception

Kansas City #Chiefs DB Trent McDuffie snagged the second interception of his young career against the Houston #Texans in Week 16.

The Kansas City Chiefs are nursing a seven-point halftime lead in their Week 16 matchup against the Houston Texans, and have relied on Steve Spagnuolo’s outstanding defense to keep momentum on their side.

Though Houston has done its best to solve the riddle of Spagnuolo’s schemes, Kansas City’s defenders have kept Texans quarterback C.J. Stroud on his back foot while also maintaining pressure on their opponent’s running game.

After rookie defensive back Jaden Hicks came down with an interception on the game’s first drive, star cornerback Trent McDuffie got into the action and secured his second career interception before the half.

Take a look at this video of McDuffie’s diving pick, which was posted to Twitter by the Chiefs’ official account:

McDuffie grabbed his first career interception on Sunday in Kansas City’s Week 15 win over the Cleveland Browns.

Stay tuned to see if the Chiefs’ secondary can record another interception in the second half.

Chiefs vs. Texans: Rookie DB Jaden Hicks opens game with interception

#Chiefs rookie DB Jaden Hicks intercepted #Texans QB C.J. Stroud on the opening drive of Kansas City’s Week 16 matchup against Houston.

The Kansas City Chiefs defense wasted no time getting the ball into Patrick Mahomes’ hands against the Houston Texans in Week 16, intercepting quarterback C.J. Stroud on the first drive.

The Chiefs’ defense has been among the best in the league this year and is looking to perfect its techniques as the regular season draws to an end.

With cornerback Jaylen Watson out for the remainder of the year, the depth players in Kansas City’s secondary have had to step up and help fill the gap left by the loss of the second-year defender.

Among the players who have risen to the occasion is rookie defensive back Jaden Hicks, who intercepted Stroud on the opening drive of Saturday’s game.

Take a look at the interception, which was posted by the Chiefs’ official Twitter account:

This was Hicks’ second interception in two games and is quickly becoming a key contributor to Steve Spagnuolo’s defensive unit.

Chiefs LB Nick Bolton discusses the impact of creating turnovers: ‘It definitely felt big for us’

Kansas City #Chiefs LB Nick Bolton discusses the impact of creating turnovers: ‘It definitely felt big for us’ | @EdEastonJr

Kansas City Chiefs linebacker Nick Bolton spoke with reporters on Tuesday about his and the team’s big game, which involved forcing turnovers in Week 15.

On Cleveland’s first offensive play of the second half, Bolton picked off Jameis Winston on a pass intended for Nick Chubb at the Browns’ 34-yard line. It was Bolton’s first interception of the season and the fourth of his career.

“Yeah, especially going down the stretch into the postseason. Definitely turnovers giving the ball to offensive short fields and creating some negative play. So it definitely felt big for us. I’ve kind of been working on it.” said Bolton. “Attacking the football just hasn’t come our way a little bit. So, we’re hoping this is just a one game that kind of continue for many. We talked about it all the time. They come in bunches. They did last week, and I hoped to bring it down to this Saturday.”

Bolton and Drue Tranquill split a sack of Winston, making it five sacks on the day for the Chiefs defense. He finished the day with five tackles (three solo), one interception, one quarterback hit, one pass defensed, and a half-sack.

Sean Payton had a surprising response to Bo Nix’s three interceptions

Broncos coach Sean Payton put blame on himself for quarterback Bo Nix’s three interceptions against the Colts.

Denver Broncos rookie quarterback Bo Nix struggled for most of Sunday’s game against the Indianapolis Colts, throwing a career-high three interceptions.

Nix and the Broncos were able to overcome those turnovers — thanks in large part to five takeaways of their own — in an eventual 31-13 win. Following the game, coach Sean Payton had a somewhat surprising reaction to Nix’s interceptions, taking some of the blame on himself.

“Listen, I get mad at myself,” Payton said when asked about Nix’s interceptions. “A couple of the calls I gave him. He has one read that he knows better. It was just one of those nights where we weren’t as efficient, especially against a zone defense like that. You’re not going to hit as many big plays.

“I think early on he was like 6-for-8, but then there were some forced throws and then a few calls that were dumb by me. I have to be better.”

Nix obviously needs to make better decisions and more accurate passes, but Payton acknowledged that his play-calling had a hand in the turnovers. Fortunately, Nix bounced back and ended the day with three touchdown passes.

“This is a tough league sometimes,” Payton said. “I felt afterwards, something like that happens with that adversity early on, I get frustrated at myself, ‘Am I giving him the right looks, the right plays?’ Then later in that game when we needed it, he didn’t flinch. There’s a maturity and a moxie about him which I love. I think it’s contagious to the team.

“When you have that at the quarterback position, your team knows you’re in every game. When you don’t have it, it’s pretty difficult because deep down in their belly they know that’s not the case. That’s something you notice with this year especially and with this team.”

Nix now has 20 passing touchdowns this season (along with four rushing and one receiving) against 11 interceptions. He’ll look to take another step forward when the Broncos face the Los Angeles Chargers on Thursday Night Football in Week 16.
