Week Eleven Picks, Predictions and Preview: Michigan at Indiana

What our panel anticipates from the Wolverines road trip to Bloomington to face the 7-3 Indiana Hoosiers.

[jwplayer pKme5Ink-XNcErKyb]

The Wolverines absolutely embarrassed and eviscerated the in-state rival Michigan State Spartans this past weekend, but now the test gets tougher.

Michigan travels to Bloomington, where it takes on a resurgent Indiana team that always gives it fits, especially at home. The maize and blue have won every game in the contest dating back to 1987, but the last four games have all been close affairs, with both road games going to overtime.

What Indiana is saying about Michigan before their matchup

Michigan football takes on Indiana this week. Check out what their coaches are saying before the game on Saturday.

[jwplayer 852nXSj0-XNcErKyb]

Michigan takes on Indiana this week and the main focus for the Wolverines has been to not overlook Indiana as Ohio State is on deck next week. The team knows that Indiana can’t be overlooked as a trap game opponent and that they have to focus on them before Ohio State.

Before taking on Michigan this week, Indiana head coach Tom Allen spoke to the media and gave the Michigan football program some praise for their success.

“Really a lot of respect for them and their coaches and the talent that they have and how they have recruited and they are who they are historically,” Allen said. “But they just, they’re playing their best football, watching them on film the last couple days. And really impressive football team, physically and athletically and just doing a lot of great things in all three phases, they have got talented specialists. And excellent quarterback and stable of running backs. And, boy, really impressive receiver core. Big, physical, experienced offensive line.”

He then transitioned to their defense led by defensive coordinator Don Brown and how good they are behind him.

“Some new faces on defense,” Allen said. “But very, very athletic. Very explosive. And Don Brown does a phenomenal job schematically and they play really hard. And Coach Harbaugh has got them playing really, really well. So I know they had a big game last week, an important game for them and they played really, really good football, so, in all three phases. So just really an opportunity for them to come here.”

Allen wasn’t the only coach to speak to the media as defensive coordinator Kane Wommack spoke about facing Michigan quarterback Shea Patterson and how he’s changed since playing at Ole Miss, where his dad, Dave Wommack was the defensive coordinator when Patterson was there.

“I’ve gone against Shea Patterson now when I was the defensive coordinator at South Alabama when we went up there to play Ole Miss, then of course last season and this season,” Wommack said. “My dad was the defensive coordinator when he was at Ole Miss, so I’ve kind of known about him for a long time. I think very highly of him and how he plays the game. Certainly, I was a much bigger fan when he was with my dad at Ole Miss, now he just seems to be a big pain in the tail, but he’s just a very talented football player. He’s very gifted, he can make all the throws, he can extend plays and drives with his feet. I think what they have done and evolved to offensively certainly meshes well with what his skillset, and I think they’ve taken advantage of their quarterback and their outside skill.”

“I think they have done a good job of developing him into becoming more of a complete pocket-passer,” Wommack said. “I think the emphasis for him has been to stay in the pocket, keep his eyes downfield. I do think one of the best things … I think him and Johnny Manziel are the two best players that I’ve faced in terms of when they escape the pocket, they keep their eyes downfield. … He does a great job of keeping his eyes downfield, always looking to extend drives and throw the ball and not scramble and rush.”

Indiana offensive coordinator Kalen DeBoer also spoke to the media about the Wolverines defense, led by Brown.

“Yeah they’re really good on defense,” DeBoer said. “They have good personnel, and obviously Coach Brown with what he’s doing with his group, he’s having a lot of fun with them, you can tell. He’s letting them play, and the thing that’s really impressive I think is how disciplined they are with what they do. They come at you a lot of different plays, they’re going to keep you off balance. Up front, there’s just a lot of things happening. It’s really impressive, you can tell there’s a lot of experience that’s going into the plans that he puts out there on the football field each and every Saturday.”

DeBoer also brought up how Indiana quarterback Peyton Ramsey will put his past issues against Michigan behind him this week and focus on the game this week.

“I’ve flipped through those games and understand what’s taken place,” DeBoer said. “But we’ll figure out how to attack their defense and lay out the plan of what we’re going to try to accomplish on Saturday.”

Michigan takes on Indiana on Saturday, November 23 at 3:30 p.m. at Memorial Stadium in Bloomington, Indiana.

Michigan at Indiana odds, picks and best bets

Previewing Saturday’s Michigan at Indiana college football matchup, with college football betting odds, picks and best bets

The Michigan Wolverines (8-2, 5-2 Big Ten East) and Indiana Hoosiers (7-3, 4-3 East) battle at “The Rock” in Bloomington, Ind., in a key divisional battle Saturday at 3:30 p.m. ET.

We analyze the Michigan-Indiana odds and betting lines, while providing college football betting tips and advice on this matchup.

Michigan at Indiana: Three things you need to know

1. Michigan has covered four in a row, but is 3-8 against the spread in its past 11 games on the road and 0-3-1 ATS in its past four meetings with Indiana.

2. Wolverines freshman RB Zach Charbonnet has rolled up 589 rushing yards and 11 total touchdowns.

3. Hoosiers RB Stevie Scott III has posted 791 rushing yards with 10 total scores, while WR Whop Philyor is good for a team-high 863 receiving yards.

Prediction

Michigan 40, Indiana 24

Moneyline (ML)

Michigan (-345) is a moderate favorite on the road, and the Wolverines are not going to be caught looking ahead to their titanic battle next weekend with Ohio State. However, they’re too expensive on the road against an underrated Indiana (+265). The Hoosiers would have been a much more tempting play had QB Michael Penix Jr. not gone down with an injury.

New to sports betting? A $10 wager on Michigan to win would return a profit of $2.90.

Against the Spread (ATS)

MICHIGAN (-8.5, -115) will come home from Bloomington with a hard-fought double-digit victory. Indiana (+8.5, -106) will keep it close — and might even be tied or leading at halftime — but the deeper Wolverines will pull away in the second half.

Over/Under (O/U)

The OVER (53.5, -110) is 5-1 in Michigan’s past six on the road, and 6-2 in the Wolverine’s past eight inside the conference. The over is 5-0 in Indiana’s past five at home against teams with a winning road record, and 10-4 in the Hoosiers’ past 14 inside the Big Ten, too.

Indiana-Penn State odds: Nittany Lions face tough test at home

Previewing Saturday’s Indiana-Penn State college football matchup, with college football betting odds, picks and best bets

[jwplayer 64hUO9C8]

The Indiana Hoosiers (7-2, 4-2 Big Ten) and Penn State Nittany Lions (8-1, 5-1) will do battle in Happy Valley on Saturday at noon ET, with the Lions looking to bounce back after a narrow loss at Minnesota last weekend and the Hoosiers going for their first 8-win season since 1993.

We analyze the Indiana-Penn State odds and betting lines, while providing college football betting tips and advice on this matchup.

Indiana at Penn State: Three things you need to know

1. Indiana has quietly rolled up seven victories, with their two losses a 51-10 setback to Ohio State on Sept. 14 and a 40-31 loss at Michigan State on Sept. 28. The Hoosiers have won four in a row and are 5-1 against the spread in their last six.

2. Hoosiers RB Stevie Scott III is one of the most underrated runners in the Big Ten, racking up 737 rushing yards and 10 total touchdowns. Penn State WR KJ Hamler of Penn State has 739 receiving yards and eight scores to lead the Lions.

3. Penn State ranks 13th in the country at 300.0 yards per game allowed, with its rushing defense (74.2 yards per game) ranking third. And the Lions’ scoring defense (12.0 points per game) is fifth in the nation.

Indiana at Penn State: Odds, betting lines and picks

Odds via BetMGM; access USA TODAY Sports’ betting odds for a full list. Lines last updated Thursday at 7:15 a.m. ET.

Prediction

Penn State 31, Indiana 24

Moneyline (ML)

Penn State (-834) is going to bounce back and return to the win column. However, it won’t be a rout, and the Nittany Lions are certainly not worth putting up more than eight times the return. If anything, Indiana (+440) would be worth a small-unit bet to more than quadruple your lettuce.

New to sports betting? A $10 wager on Penn State to win would return a profit of $1.20.

Against the Spread (ATS)

INDIANA (+14.5, -115) is a sharp play catching more than two touchdowns in this one. If you were to tease it up and combine it with a handful of other games, even better. It will be interesting to see how Penn State (-14.5, -106) rebounds. Its defense was bludgeoned by a team which wasn’t getting very much respect in Minnesota. Now against the Hoosiers, that sounds all too familiar.

Over/Under (O/U)

The total (54.5) is going to be super close. Avoid playing the O/U in this one, as Vegas has this right and the game will come in right around the projected total.

Ohio State football rooting interests for week 12

Looking forward to Week 12 of the college football season, what should Ohio State fans root for in all of the games.

We’re back for another week of Rooting Interests. Remember, the goal of this exercise is to look at what will give the Buckeyes the best possible resume in case they lose a game. 13-0 Ohio State is a Playoff lock, so there isn’t much to root for there. But if the Buckeyes drop a game to Penn State, Michigan, or in the Big Ten Championship Game, what will best help the Buckeyes get in to the College Football Playoff.

The first game Buckeye fans should pay attention to is Friday night’s Conference-USA showdown between Marshall and Louisiana Tech. Two of Ohio State’s nonconference opponents (Miami of Ohio and Cincinnati) have already essentially wrapped up division titles. FAU has a decent chance of making it three-for-three, but Marshall needs to lose a game for that to happen. This game is Marshall’s most likely loss in the final three weeks.

On Saturday, there are a ton of important games. As always, Alabama losing wouldn’t hurt, though is obviously unlikely. And while usually upsets always help, Florida has the weakest resume of any SEC contender right now. So as long as Georgia can lose the SEC East, Florida winning is better. Then again, if Miami (Fl) wins its final two games, Florida’s resume could be on par with Georgia’s. And, of course, a Florida loss isn’t a bad outcome, especially if Georgia beats either Auburn or Texas A&M.

In the afternoon, root for Navy over Notre Dame. Not only does an Irish loss hurt Georgia’s resume, but Navy could be 10-1 and meet Cincinnati in the AAC Championship Game. That would be a battle of Top 15 teams, and Cincinnati winning that would only make Ohio State look better. Speaking of Cincinnati, the Bearcats travel to face South Florida at 7 PM. Staying in the AAC in the afternoon, root for Memphis to beat Houston and keep its high ranking.

Moving over to ACC games, it’s always good to root for Clemson to lose. The Tigers, with a loss, should be ranked behind even a one-loss Ohio State team, so them losing to Wake Forest would be good. If they beat Wake Forest, though, pull for a blowout. The worst-case scenario would be Wake Forest being viewed as a more valuable win solely on the back of keeping it close against Clemson. Also, pull for Virginia Tech to fall to Georgia Tech. The Hokies could still be a decent opponent in the ACC Championship Game at 9-3, but a loss to Georgia Tech would erase that completely.

In the evening, don’t waste too much time on LSU at Ole Miss. The Tigers almost certainly won’t lose two games, and even if they do, they still have an incredible resume. LSU winning would help Ohio State by not making any of Alabama’s wins look more valuable.

There are pros and cons for both Baylor and Oklahoma winning. Baylor going undefeated is a bigger issue for Ohio State than 12-1 Oklahoma is, though, so you may as well root for the Sooners here. Either way, though, this game should be a close one, and preferably not a pretty one. Mistakes and turnovers winning the day makes both teams look bad, which is the goal here.

Two other 7:30 games matter, but in contradictory ways. Root for Georgia State to beat Appalachian State so that South Carolina looks worse. At the same time, though, root for South Carolina to beat Texas A&M–because Texas A&M not being a valuable win is more important than South Carolina being an even worse opponent. (Remember, Alabama beat South Carolina but Georgia lost to the Gamecocks.)

Later in the evening, Utah and Oregon losing don’t hurt. It’s better for Oregon to lose, though, for two reasons. First of all, Utah has a weaker overall resume than the Ducks. Secondly, especially if Oklahoma beats Baylor, remember that Oklahoma beat UCLA earlier in the season. Right now, the Sooners only have two decent wins (Texas and Iowa State). UCLA winning out–or at least upsetting Utah–would make Oklahoma look better. And speaking of Iowa State, root for the Cyclones to upset Texas. Not only would that help Iowa stay ranked (more on that in the next section), but it would take the luster off Oklahoma’s best win so far.

Next… Who to root for in Big Ten games

Indiana fans loved to see Kentucky’s embarrassing loss to Evansville

No. 1 Kentucky was stunned on its home floor by Evansville on Tuesday.

For the first time in program history, Evansville toppled a AP-ranked team on the road. That team happened to be the No. 1 Kentucky Wildcats, a favorite to win the national championship at the end of the season.

Last season, the Purple Aces won just 11 games, and were picked to finish eighth in the Missouri Valley Conference this year. Evansville didn’t catch fire from the floor – the Purple Aces shot 38 percent from the field – or win on a fluke buzzer-beater, they outworked the top-ranked team in the nation and played excellent defense at Rupp Arena to pull off a historic upset. For Kentucky, it was the first time the Wildcats had ever lost at home as a No. 1 team to a non-conference opponent, according to ESPN Stats and Info.

College basketball fans roasted Kentucky online, and Indiana fans at Assembly Hall chanted “Evansville” during the Hoosiers’ blowout win on Tuesday.

We now know the rest of the start times for Michigan football moving forward.

With the two upcoming home rivalry games kicking off at noon EST, the lone game we didn’t know about was the final road game of the season, as Michigan travels to Bloomington to take on a currently ranked Indiana team.

While the Hoosiers play Penn State this weekend, which could affect their ability to be ranked, regardless, it’ll be a big matchup for a Wolverines team that has recently struggled at Indiana, with each of the last two road games there going to overtime.

As a result, it won’t just be an early kickoff, as Indiana announced that the game will kick off at 3:30PM EST, and will be televised on either ABC or ESPN.

Michigan has to really maintain focus, either way, given the recent struggles against the Hoosiers, especially on the road. But, it’s somewhat exacerbated given that the maize and blue take on archrival Ohio State the very next week. In recent memory, when the Wolverines have taken on Indiana, the home games have been the week before The Game, but the road games came at least two weeks before said matchup.
