Panthers’ biggest needs heading into the 2025 offseason

The Panthers have quite a few needs for 2025, and most of them reside on the defensive side of the ball.

Despite missing the playoffs for the seventh consecutive season, the Carolina Panthers took a refreshing step forward in 2024.

They went from two wins in 2023 to five wins this year, they won’t be going forward with a different head coach and, perhaps most importantly, they may very well have their franchise quarterback in Bryce Young.

But this seedling is going to require some more water before it really starts budding next fall.

So for the Panthers to keep growing, they’ll have to address these needs during the offseason . . .

What are the Panthers’ biggest needs for 2025?

1. EDGE

All things considered, outside linebacker Jadeveon Clowney had himself a pretty decent campaign. But when your best pass rusher is an 11th-year veteran who recorded 5.5 sacks, you probably need some more firepower.

Carolina is fresh off allowing the most points ever in a single season (534), and their punchless pass rush certainly played a part in that dubious honor. The Panthers notched just 32 sacks, tied for the third-fewest in 2024.

Other than rostering Clowney off the edge, the unit does have D.J. Wonnum—who gave a fine account of himself in his shortened season. But this defense needs a certifiable sack artist, one who can free up Clowney more often and push Wonnum into a more suitable role as a rotational presence.

2. DL

If Carolina suffered mightily from their lack of pressure, then their run defense might tell the pass rush to hold its beer.

The Panthers relinquished a ridiculous 179.8 rushing yards per game, by far the most in the NFL. To put that number into perspective—the next closest team, the New Orleans Saints, allowed 141.4 rushing yards a contest.

This unit will certainly get a boost from the return of Pro Bowler Derrick Brown, who went down for the season after tearing his meniscus in Week 1. He will, however, need some upgrades beside and behind him.

3. DB

Xavier Woods, Jordan Fuller and Nick Scott combined to account for 83.1 percent of Carolina’s snaps amongst safeties. All three are slated to become free agents this offseason.

Cornerback Mike Jackson, maybe the most pleasant surprise of the year, is also looking for a new contract. If he walks, the Panthers would definitely need a new No. 2 to pair with Pro Bowler Jaycee Horn.

But even if they were to retain at least some of those guys, the Panthers need more playmakers in their secondary. Their nine interceptions were tied for the fifth-fewest in the league.

4. ILB

All three of Carolina’s top inside linebackers—Shaq Thompson, Josey Jewell and Trevin Wallace—had their seasons abbreviated by injuries. By the time Weeks 17 and 18 rolled around, the Panthers were forced to entrust the middle of their defense to special teamers and practice-squad members.

The outlook is still cloudy entering 2025. Thompson will be a free agent coming off an Achilles tear, Jewell wasn’t always a reliable tackler and Wallace is still learning the position.

5. WR

It wouldn’t be a Carolina Panthers offseason if we didn’t bring up the need for a wideout.

While Young took a very encouraging step in his development over the season’s last 11 weeks, he shouldn’t taking his next one with a 35-year-old Adam Thielen as his best target. And although Xavier Legette and Jalen Coker flashed at times as rookies, neither are likely to grow right into the No. 1 receiver Young should have for 2025.

6. TE

There’s a similar conundrum at the tight end position.

2024 fourth-round pick Ja’Tavion Sanders looked quite solid . . . in spurts. He, like Legette and Coker, is not a surefire solution at the moment.

Plus, Tommy Tremble and Ian Thomas are headed to free agency.

Panthers’ updated 53-man roster following Monday’s moves

The Panthers made some adjustments on Monday.

The Carolina Panthers made an adjustment on Monday, beginning by placing tight end Ian Thomas on injured reserve.

Thomas, the fourth-longest tenured Panther, will now miss at least the next four games due to a calf injury he sustained in the Week 10 win over the New York Giants.

In his place goes cornerback Caleb Farley, who was elevated from the practice squad for each of the team’s past three games.

Here’s an updated look at Carolina’s 53-man roster following today’s moves:

Panthers announce signing, place TE Ian Thomas on IR

The Panthers have signed CB Caleb Farley to their active roster and placed TE Ian Thomas on IR.

The Carolina Panthers’ corresponding move for the reported signing of cornerback Caleb Farley has been announced. Oh, and the reported signing of cornerback Caleb Farley is no longer “reported.”

As first noted on Monday morning by ESPN senior NFL insider Adam Schefter, the Panthers have added the 26-year-old cornerback to their 53-man roster. Farley, who was added to the team’s practice squad back on Oct. 1, was elevated to the game-day roster for each of Carolina’s past three games.

The Maiden N.C. native and former first-round pick of the Tennessee Titans played in the Week 8 loss to the Denver Broncos as well as the Week 9 and Week 10 wins over the New Orleans Saints and New York Giants. He tallied 29 snaps on defense and 23 snaps on special teams.

To make room for Farley, the Panthers have placed tight end Ian Thomas on injured reserve. Thomas, currently the fourth-longest tenured Panther, sustained a calf injury in the Week 10 victory in Munich, Germany.

He will now miss at least the next four games.

In addition, defensive tackle Sam Roberts, a sixth-round pick of the New England Patriots in 2022, has been signed to the practice squad in Farley’s place.

Carolina Panthers players who are free agents in 2025

With the trade deadline now behind us, let’s take a look at the Panthers who are set to become free agents following the 2024 season:

(This story was updated to add new information.)

The 2024 NFL trade deadline has come and gone, and it didn’t go without a few moves from the Carolina Panthers.

Last week, the team shipped off wideout Diontae Johnson to the Baltimore Ravens in a trade involving a late-round pick swap for the 2025 draft. And yesterday, in a much more favorable return, they sent fellow receiver Jonathan Mingo over to the Dallas Cowboys.

Here are Panthers whose contracts are set to expire following the season:

  • QB Andy Dalton
  • RB Chuba Hubbard (Signed four-year extension)
  • RB Raheem Blackshear (RFA)
  • WR David Moore

Panthers announce 5 moves before Week 6 matchup vs. Falcons

The Panthers have signed OLB Marquis Haynes Sr. to their active roster.

Well, it seems as though Marquis Haynes Sr. is game-ready.

The Carolina Panthers announced on Saturday that they have signed the seventh-year outside linebacker to their active roster. Haynes Sr., who spent all six of his previous seasons with the organization, returned as a member of the practice squad on Oct. 4.

With the team’s top pass rusher Jadeveon Clowney considered doubtful for tomorrow’s matchup against the Atlanta Falcons, head coach Dave Canales talked about the possibility of elevating Haynes Sr. and/or fellow veteran Shaq Lawson from the practice squad for Week 6.

“Know how to use their hands,” Canales said of the two on Friday. “They got a plan for playing the run game, playing the pass game. Nice toolboxes in the pass rush, and those things. So again, it’s just a matter of getting eyes on them and feeling comfortable about them being ready to play football.”

Haynes Sr. appeared in 71 games for the Panthers between 2018 and 2023. He amassed 99 combined tackles, 14.0 sacks and four fumble recoveries.

Carolina also added tight end Ian Thomas to the active roster. Thomas began the regular season on injured reserve due to a calf issue.

Joining Haynes Sr. and Thomas in uniform tomorrow will be offensive lineman Brandon Walton and defensive lineman T.J. Smith—both of whom have been elevated from the practice squad.

Additionally, to help make some room on the roster, the Panthers placed center Austin Corbett on season-ending injured reserve with his biceps tear.

Panthers Week 6 injury report: 5 players ruled out vs. Falcons

Panthers OLB Jadeveon Clowney may not be ready to go for Sunday’s matchup against the Falcons.

The anemic pass rush of the Carolina Panthers will probably be a whole lot weaker in Week 6.

After missing out on a third straight practice, starting outside linebacker Jadeveon Clowney has been ruled doubtful for Sunday’s matchup against the Atlanta Falcons. The three-time Pro Bowler has been sidelined due to a shoulder injury he sustained in the Week 5 loss to the Chicago Bears.

Outside of Clowney, the Panthers are currently carrying four edge rushers on their active roster—Charles Harris, Thomas Incoom, Tarron Jackson and DJ Johnson. Carolina has also recently signed Marquis Haynes Sr. and former first-round pick Shaq Lawson to their practice squad.

The Panthers have ruled out five players for the contest—tight end Tommy Tremble, centers Austin Corbett and Andrew Raym, right tackle Taylor Moton and inside linebacker Josey Jewell. Moton is set to miss the first game of his eight-year NFL career.

Jadeveon Clowney among 7 Panthers held out of practice on Thursday

Panthers OLB Jadeveon Clowney did not participate for a second straight practice.

Thursday’s injury report doesn’t seem to be all that encouraging for the Carolina Panthers. In fact, it appears to be a bit worse.

After holding out six players from Wednesday’s session, the team has listed seven non-participants from this afternoon. Joining the group, which already includes a few starters on defense, is defensive lineman A’Shawn Robinson—who was limited with an ankle issue yesterday.

Perhaps the most concerning absence is that of outside linebacker Jadeveon Clowney, who injured his shoulder in the Week 5 loss to the Chicago Bears. The Panthers are exceptionally thin off the edge and have amassed just six sacks over five games in 2024.

Here’s Thursday’s injury report in full:

Panthers hold out handful of starters from Wednesday’s practice

Panthers OLB Jadeveon Clowney was amongst the starters who did not participate in practice this afternoon.

The Carolina Panthers were a bit shorthanded to kick off Week 6.

Wednesday’s practice did not include a handful of the team’s starters. Tight end Tommy Tremble (concussion), right tackle Taylor Moton (elbow), outside linebacker Jadeveon Clowney (shoulder) and inside linebacker Josey Jewell (hamstring/groin) were all listed as non-participants.

Also out, as expected, was center Austin Corbett—who tore his biceps in the Week 5 loss to the Chicago Bears. Corbett will be placed on the season-ending injured reserve.

Panthers rule out 2 players from Week 5 matchup vs. Bears

The Panthers will not activate TE Ian Thomas and CB Dane Jackson for tomorrow’s contest in Chicago.

As expected, the Carolina Panthers won’t have tight end Ian Thomas and cornerback Dane Jackson ready for tomorrow.

The team announced on Saturday that both Thomas and Jackson have been ruled out for Sunday’s Week 5 matchup against the Chicago Bears. The two, who began the regular season on injured reserve, returned to practice for the first time at the start of the week.

Head coach Dave Canales spoke about their returns on Monday.

“We talk about competition all the time, and I love what it brings to our group—just being able to get out there, play fast, guys who are excited to get back to football,” he told reporters.

“But again—they gotta be out there, they gotta handle the load. Still, with all that timing, they haven’t been on the field with us running our plays and all that. So this is a great opportunity for those guys to get rolling and for us to get a look at them.”

Thomas has entered his seventh pro season, all of which have come for the Panthers.

Jackson is in his first campaign with Carolina after signing a two-year pact this past spring.

The Panthers will, however, have defensive lineman T.J. Smith and outside linebacker Thomas Incoom available on Sunday. Both were elevated from the practice squad this afternoon.
