Seahawks, Texans host ex-Chiefs QB Ian Book, TE Irv Smith Jr. for workouts

QB Ian Book and TE Irv Smith, who played for the #Chiefs in the preseason, worked out for the #Seahawks and #Texans respectively on Tuesday.

According to a report from NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, Seattle Seahawks and Houston Texans both hosted players who were on the Kansas City Chiefs’ preseason roster for workouts on Tuesday.

Seattle took a look at former Notre Dame quarterback Ian Book, who saw extended playing time during Kansas City’s exhibition matchups against the Jacksonville Jaguars and Chicago Bears in August.

Houston hosted tight end Irv Smith, who signed with the Chiefs as a free agent earlier this year but was cut after failing to earn a spot on Kansas City’s 53-man roster after training camp.

It remains unclear whether the former Chiefs are expected to sign a contract with the teams they visited.

For its part, Kansas City reunited with veteran running back Kareem Hunt on Tuesday after star rusher Isiah Pacheco sustained a serious leg injury in the Chiefs’ win over the Cincinnati Bengals in Week 2.

Stay tuned to see if Book or Smith signs with a new team ahead of Week 3.

Chiefs reportedly waived QB Ian Book on Monday

Kansas City #Chiefs reportedly waived QB Ian Book on Monday | @EdEastonJr

The Kansas City Chiefs waived quarterback Ian Book to get down to the NFL-mandated 53-man roster.

According to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, the Chiefs are waving Book ahead of Tuesday’s 53-man roster deadline for all teams before the start of the regular season. The former Notre Dame star appeared in all three Chiefs preseason games and received mixed reviews for his performance. He finished with 133 yards passing and two touchdowns without an interception but notably committed a late-game fumble in the second preseason game loss to the Detroit Lions.

During his illustrious college career, Book finished with the most wins as a quarterback in Notre Dame football history with 30 wins as a starter. He connected on 72 touchdown passes, placing him second all-time in the school’s history.

Book competed with Chris Oladokun for the third quarterback spot behind starter Patrick Mahomes and veteran backup Carson Wentz. The former 2021 fourth-round pick of the New Orleans Saints has spent time with the Philadelphia Eagles and New England Patriots. He signed a reserve/future contract with the Chiefs on January 10th of this year.

Highlight compilation from Chiefs training camp showcases QB depth

Watch this compilation of highlights from #Chiefs training camp that features Kansas City’s exceptional quarterbacks.

The Kansas City Chiefs are going into the 2024 season with four experienced quarterbacks heading up the new-look offense, although not all four can make the 53-man roster.

The signal-callers currently on the Chiefs roster for the preseason are star quarterback Patrick Mahomes who sits at the top of Kansas City’s depth chart with former Philadephia Eagle Carson Wentz as his backup. Chris Oladokun will take the third spot behind Wentz, and Ian Book will be Kansas City’s final option under center.

Now that training camp in St. Joseph has wrapped up, the Chiefs’ official Twitter account posted a compilation of highlight reel footage featuring the cast of quarterbacks’ exemplary performances at training camp.

Mahomes is expected to start and likely play through the first half when the Chiefs face the Detriot Lions on Saturday, after the half he will hand over the reins so Wentz, Oladokun, and Book can try to earn a place on the roster by impressing Andy Reid and Matt Nagy.

Wentz looks like a likely favorite to remain, however, the two remaining preseason games will inform the Chiefs’ decision on who to keep moving into the regular season.

WATCH: Patrick Mahomes warms up ahead of Chiefs’ tilt vs. Jaguars

Check out this video of Patrick Mahomes warming up before the #Chiefs’ preseason matchup against the #Jaguars on Saturday night.

The Kansas City Chiefs are set to take the field in their first exhibition matchup of the preseason against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Though the results of the game won’t mean anything in the AFC standings, both teams are prepared to play for pride as they evaluate some of the unheralded talent on their depth charts.

Star quarterback Patrick Mahomes made an early impression on fans at EverBank Stadium in Jacksonville before kickoff, launching footballs deep downfield during warmups.

Check out this video of Mahomes throwing bombs to Kansas City’s trainers in Duval County before the Chiefs’ tilt against the Jaguars:

Mahomes is only expected to play a few snaps during Saturday night’s matchup but will be ready to coach up his teammates from the sideline throughout the game.

Expect to see him encourage Carson Wentz, Chris Oladokun, and Ian Book to push the ball downfield as Kansas City evaluates its new receivers against Jacksonville.

Chiefs sign former Saints wide receiver Kyle Sheets

The Kansas City Chiefs signed a former New Orleans Saints wide receiver. Rookie free agent Kyle Sheets has already landed his next NFL opportunity:

It didn’t take long for Kyle Sheets to find his next NFL opportunity. The New Orleans Saints signed him as a rookie free agent out of Slippery Rock after April’s NFL draft, but he was let go after minicamp practices in the spring. And now he’s signing with the Kansas City Chiefs, per NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero.

Good for him. Sheets caught a tough break after being waived so soon, but he has the physical tools to succeed at a listed 6-foot-4 and 220 pounds. He dominated his level of competition so it isn’t surprising to see him land with another team before training camp. We’ll see if he’s still around when the Saints visit Arrowhead Stadium for a prime-time game in October.

Sheets isn’t the only former Saints player in Kansas City. The Chiefs brought in 2021 fourth-round pick Ian Book to compete for their backup quarterback job. Book and Sheets will probably see a lot of each other early in training camp on Kansas City’s third-string offense, and they’ll need to work hard to climb the depth chart from there.

Notre Dame Football: Happy Birthday to Ian Book!

What was your favorite Ian Book moment at Notre Dame?

He might not have gone down as the best to ever quarterback Notre Dame but no quarterback ever won more games as a starter in blue and gold than Ian Book.

The former Notre Dame signal caller turns 26 on Saturday.  Book is currently signed to a guaranteed futures contract with the Kansas City Chiefs.

Book was originally committed to Washington State before getting flipped by the Fighting Irish back in 2016 recruiting class.  Book made his first start for an injured Brandon Wimbush in 2017 at North Carolina before taking over as the full-time starter in the fifth game of the 2018 season.

From there Book helped guide Notre Dame to their only two College Football Playoff appearances to date as they went 12-0 in the 2018 regular season and 10-0 in the 2020 regular season before dropping the ACC Championship and Rose Bowl games.

Along the way his heroics helped Notre Dame comeback to beat LSU on a miracle pass and catch, upset No. 1 Clemson, and run to victory with a badly injured mid-section at Northwestern along with a whole lot more.

Cheers to Ian!  Celebrate by checking out some of the best photos of him from his time at Notre Dame below:

What If Notre Dame Joined the Big Ten?

We know almost nobody wants it – but what if…

Amid all of the recent alterations and changes to the playoff system and conferences themselves, the discussion about Notre Dame and if and or when they may join a conference has resurfaced. Many speculate, and I agree with said speculation, that if the Irish were to join a conference it would likely be the Big Ten. The same group that barred Notre Dame from joining about 100 years ago.

Why the Big Ten? Money, geography, and a good academic fit top the list.

Rather than debate if this will ever happen, which has no direct answer at this time, I’d like to take some time to focus on what it would look like for the Irish if it did happen. Traditional Notre Dame fans such as I would undoubtedly have some existential wounds from the move that may never fully heal, but it isn’t all bad. In fact, there would be many tangible benefits to joining.

For now, I will try to push aside my affinity for the Irish’s independence and explore the plus side of what football life would look like for Notre Dame in the B10.

Former Notre Dame quarterback signs futures deal with Chiefs

Headed to the defending champs…eventually

In case you missed it earlier this week the Kansas City Chiefs signed former Notre Dame quarterback Ian Book to a reserve/future contract.

Book was most recently with the Patriots on a practice squad deal for roughly a week earlier this season.  A year ago he was on the Eagles roster when they went to the Super Bowl after he spent the previous season, his rookie year (2021) with the New Orleans Saints.

Book is not eligible to play this postseason for the Chiefs but it does allow for him to compete for a roster spot once training camp comes around.

NCAA Football Video Game Returns: Notre Dame Players We Missed Out On

Which Notre Dame player would have been the best to play with?

College football has its own cult-like following that makes it truly unique compared to any other American sport.  Even in that group there are sub-groups that are even that much more passionate.

One of those groups includes anyone who was ever a fan of the NCAA Football video game by EA Sports.

Personally, I can’t begin to estimate the total hours spent as a high school student in my parents house playing that game, the amount of hours I invested in it during college, or the hours I spent in my early-20’s with it.

However, it went away after the NCAA Football ’13 edition, meaning we’ve gone a full decade (2014-2023 seasons) now without the game.

So which players in that time did we especially miss playing with if we would have been playing as Notre Dame?

Here are the 11 we missed out in video game form the most.

7 quarterbacks Jaguars could sign after Patriots claimed Nathan Rourke

The Jaguars are suddenly in need of a quarterback with Trevor Lawrence in concussion protocol and Nathan Rourke claimed by the Patriots.

Update: The Jaguars signed E.J. Perry to their practice squad Tuesday.

The Jacksonville Jaguars are in sudden need of a quarterback.

For most of the year, the team has carried two quarterbacks on the active roster, Trevor Lawrence and C.J. Beathard, as well as former CFL star Nathan Rourke on the practice squad.

Now the team temporarily has only one passer after Lawrence landed in the concussion protocol and Rourke was claimed off waivers by the New England Patriots.

Rourke, 25, was signed to the active roster in October when Lawrence was questionable for a Week 7 game due to a knee injury. The Jaguars then waived Rourke and added him back to the practice squad after the game.

Jacksonville tried to do the same when an ankle sprain had Lawrence questionable for a Week 14 game. But the Patriots scooped up Rourke before he could get back to the Jaguars’ practice squad.

If Lawrence can’t play Sunday against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, there’s no doubt that Beathard will be the team’s starter. But there’s also no question that the Jaguars need to add another player at the position.

Here are seven quarterbacks on the market who could be considered by the Jaguars:
