Las Vegas Raiders quarterback Derek Carr played at Fresno State from 2009-13, but if he could do it all over again, he might want to go back and play for Dabo Swinney.

Carr and Clemson legend Hunter Renfrow were guests on the Harvester Sports Podcast this week and talked about the Tigers’ head coach.

Carr spoke about how fond he is of Swinney, saying he hears more from Swinney than even his former Fresno State coaches, and joked that he would want to come back to college and play for him.

“Dabo Swinney literally has FaceTimed me or texted me more than like my coaches that I played with in college. I promise,” Carr said. “This man FaceTimed me the other day, and it wasn’t even anything about Hunter. He’s like, ‘Hey man, keep it going. Man, so proud of you. I’m so fired up.’ I’m like, ‘Dude, you’re getting me fired up.’”

“He’s just that good of a dude,” Carr added. “He’s like the best person. I’d always mess with him (Renfrow), like, ‘Dabo’s got y’all brainwashed, man.’ And then you meet the guy and you’re like, ‘I love this guy.’ I was like, ‘Can I come back and play for you?’”

Renfrow chimed in on Swinney as well and showed a lot of love for his former coach.

“I love Coach Swinney,” Renfrow said. “He’s amazing. He cares about his players. He wants to win more than anybody. He’s passionate. He’s passionate about more than just football, which is important. You need people who care about you. If you just care about one thing and care about winning and care about football, then I don’t think you’re going to have guys play hard for you because they know you don’t care.

“So, I love Coach Swinney. I think whatever he did, whatever he does in life and whatever he chose to do – whether it be a preacher or a CEO or a janitor – whatever it is, he would be the absolute best at it. He’s an all-around great guy.”

You can watch Renfrow and Carr talk about Swinney beginning around the 29-minute mark of the following video:

Renfrow reflects on ‘unbelievable’ game-winning TD vs. Bama

Hunter Renfrow grew up a Clemson fan. So when the Socastee native caught the game-winning touchdown pass from Deshaun Watson to send the Tigers past Alabama in the 2016 national championship game, it was certainly a dream come true for him.

Renfrow was a guest on the Harvester Sports Podcast this week and reflected on the 2-yard touchdown reception that came with one second left, giving Clemson a 35-31 win over the Crimson Tide and delivering the Tigers their first national title since 1981.

A former walk-on, Renfrow recounted his memories from that special night of Jan. 9, 2017, at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, Fla.

“For me, I was always a Clemson fan,” said Renfrow, now in his third NFL season with the Raiders. “My mom went there, my grandad went there. I had a bunch of family members that went to Clemson. So, playing in the front yard, growing up … My dad was a high school coach. I had always envisioned getting out there with three seconds left on the basketball court, hitting the game-winning shot in the national championship or NBA championship, whatever it is.

“So, growing up a Clemson fan, I just dreamed about being able to do that one day and doing it for Clemson. So, starting out as a walk-on and being on scout team and playing against those guys every day really gave me confidence to be able to go out there and do that. So, whenever we won the national championship in 2016 and I was a part of it, I can remember after the game, just standing there and basically in awe. I just looked around and was just like, ‘This is unbelievable. This is a dream come true.’ This is what you tell people about, achieving your dreams and stuff like that. So, it was unbelievable for me.”

You can watch Renfrow talk about his game-winner in the natty beginning around the 2:55 mark of the following video:

Giants defeat Raiders, 23-16: Instant analysis

Analyzing the New York Giants’ 23-16 victory over the Las Vegas Raiders at MetLife Stadium in Week 9.

The New York Giants hosted the AFC West-leading Las Vegas Raiders at MetLife Stadium on Sunday afternoon, which was a perfect day for football with temperatures around 50 degrees and hardly any wind.

The Giants were coming off another disappointing loss while Las Vegas was coming off their bye week. It was hardly an uneventful week for the Raiders with the tragic Henry Ruggs situation, and the Giants were uncertain about who would be available this week after some faulty COVID-19 tests.

The line at kickoff had dipped down to Giants +2.5 with an over/under of 46.5 points as per the Tipico Sportsbook app.

The Giants opened the scoring with a crisp seven-play, 75-yard drive that resulted in a Daniel Jones-to-Evan Engram 30-yard hookup for a touchdown that Engram grabbed over Raiders safety Jonathan Abram.

The Raiders stormed right back, marching 72 yards on 10 plays and tied the game when Derek Carr hit Hunter Renfrow for a two-yard score after Renfrow shook James Bradberry on the goal line.

The defenses took over the game and the clubs traded field goals to bring the score to 10-10 with 2:00 remaining in the first half. The Giants have been terrible at the end of the first half all season and they continued that in this game as Las Vegas was able to add another field goal with 0:10 remaining in the half to take a 13-10 lead into the tunnel.

The Raiders lead was short-lived as Giants safety Xavier McKinney picked off Carr on the first possession the second half and took it 41 yards to the house to give the Giants a 17-13 lead.

On the next possession, the Giants defense once again stood tall and forced a field goal. It was their third red zone stop of the game in four tries.

Graham Gano’s 32-yard field goal widened the Giants’ lead with 14:07 remaining. The defense did their thing again on the Raiders’ next drive, stopping them on third-and-6 from the Giants’ 10. Daniel Carlson then hooked the 25-yard field goal attempt wide left to keep the score at 20-16 in favor of New York.

McKinney’s second interception shut the door on Las Vegas’ next possession and sent the Giants on a drive that resulted in a 36-yard field goal to extend the Giants’ lead to 23-16.

The Raiders took control of the football on their own 25 with 3:21 remaining. After driving down to the Giants’ 13 with 0:50 remaining, the defense went work again. Rookie defensive end Quincy Roche stripped Carr of the ball and it was recovered by Leonard Williams on the 23.

The Giants finally win close one. They are 3-3 after starting the year 0-3.

Notes

  • The Giants were shorthanded in the backfield. Saquon Barkley (ankle) and rookie Gary Brightwell (COVID-19) were inactive. Barkley has played in just 20 of the Giants’ last 41 games.
  • Devontae Booker had a career high 99 yards rushing on 21 carries and added 23 yards on three receptions.
  • Sterling Shepard (quad) missed his fourth game of the season. Shepard has now missed 14 games since the beginning of the 2019 season due to various injuries.
  • Fourth-round pick Elerson Smith, an outside linebacker out of Northern Iowa, made his NFL debut. Oshane Ximines was a healthy scratch, perhaps benched after his offsides penalty cost the Giants a chance to win last Monday night in Kansas City.
  • KR/WR Pharoh Cooper and safety J.R. Reed also made their Giants debut in this game.
  • Keion Crossen’s personal foul penalty on Raiders punter A.J. Cole was the 12th special team penalty of the season for the Giants, the most of any team in the NFL this year.
  • The game was broadcast on CBS as the Giants were hosting an AFC team. Kevin Harlan, Trent Green and Melanie Collins (field reporter) called the game.

Renfrow honored with award for incredible play

Former Clemson and current Las Vegas Raiders wide receiver Hunter Renfrow has been honored with an award for the big play he made on “Monday Night Football” this week.

Renfrow won the NFL Way to Play Award for Week 4 for the big hit he made to break up a pass on a fake punt in the game against the Los Angeles Chargers. Renfrow’s play, which went viral, came late in the first quarter and caused a turnover on downs.

“We didn’t have a guy out there, and I was kind of in between and I didn’t know if I should play the return or go down and play the receiver,” Renfrow said. “So, luckily, he took some time to throw the ball and I was able to make a play. But it was a big stop for us, I guess.”

The NFL Way to Play Award, now in its fourth year, recognizes the best examples of playing technique each week of the NFL regular season and playoffs. A panel of NFL legends vote on which impactful play best exemplifies that week by week.

Renfrow will receive a $2,500 equipment grant through USA Football that he’ll be able to award to the local youth or high school football program of his choosing.

‘He’s something else’: Raiders react to Renfrow’s spectacular play

Former Clemson and current Las Vegas Raiders receiver Hunter Renfrow shined against the Los Angeles Chargers on “Monday Night Football” – not only on offense, but especially on special teams.

In addition to catching a 10-yard touchdown pass from Raiders quarterback Derek Carr in the third quarter, Renfrow made a highlight-reel play on a Chargers fake punt attempt in the first period.

Renfrow moved up from his punt returner role and absolutely laid the wood on Chargers cornerback Tevaughn Campbell after the ball was thrown to Campbell from punter Ty Long, knocking it loose for an incompletion and turnover on downs.

“He’s something else,” Raiders head coach Jon Gruden told reporters after the game when asked about Renfrow’s spectacular special-teams play.

Renfrow showed off his incredible football instincts on that play.

With nobody covering Campbell on the wide side of the field, Renfrow took notice and broke away from his punt returner spot as the ball was snapped before delivering the boom on Campbell and breaking up the pass near the first-down marker.

“Third-and-Renfrow,” as he is called, is known for his route-running ability, sure hands and moving the chains on offense. But Renfrow has a little bit of experience as a defensive back from his high school days at Socastee (and childhood) and it showed Monday night at the highest level of football.

“In high school, I did,” Renfrow said to the media after the game when asked if he has played DB before. “But in the backyard growing up, for sure. But we didn’t have a guy out there, and I was kind of in between and I didn’t know if I should play the return or go down and play the receiver. So, luckily, he took some time to throw the ball and I was able to make a play. But it was a big stop for us, I guess.”

Renfrow’s quarterback was just as impressed as everyone else by the play.

“I thought that was an amazing play,” Carr said to reporters. “Even if the guy caught it, he was short. That just shows you what kind of football player he is. I think he’s one of the best just football players in the NFL. I think he’s a special, special talent, and for him to make that play … You go win that game, you go look back at that play like wow, what a play, that kind of thing. So, I was very impressed by that.”

Although it was a forgettable night for the Raiders overall, as they lost to the Chargers, 28-14, Renfrow’s play on special teams won’t be forgotten anytime soon.

Las Vegas Raiders strike twice in third quarter against the Chargers

The Raiders cut into a 21-0 deficit with a pair of third-quarter touchdowns

The Las Vegas Raiders came out with purpose in the third quarter Monday night against the Los Angeles Chargers.

In front of a pro-Raiders crowd despite being a Chargers home game at SoFi Stadium, the Silver and Black crowd was silenced as LV fell behind 21-0.

Things changed dramatically as Derek Carr completed 9-of-10 passes on back-to-back drives after the break that wound up with Raider touchdowns.

First, Carr found Hunter Renfrow with a 10-yard pass to complete an 11-play, 79-yard drive.

The Raiders got the ball back and started to march once again. They went 81 yards in 6 plays. The drive took less than three minutes and Las Vegas found paydirt when Darren Waller went up and came down with a Carr pass for a touchdown late in the third.

The last time the Raiders won a game by trailing by 21 or more in the second half was on a Monday Night in 1988 at Denver.

They trailed 24-0 in that game and came back to win 30-27 in overtime.

Back then, they were the Los Angeles Raiders. The way SoFi sounded in the third quarter they might as well have been them again.

Watch: WR Hunter Renfrow with big tackle pass breakup on fake punt

They call him third-and-Renfrow. But he’s a lot more than that. We just all thought his repertoire was at least limited to receiving and returning. But, no. Hunter Renfrow is just a flat-out football player.

In the first quarter, the Chargers attempted a fake punt. Punter Ty Long made a good pass and Tevaughn Campbell made the catch…for an instant. Until the 5-10, 185-pound Renfrow put his helmet into the ball, knocking it free for the incompletion.

It was a huge play for Renfrow, who a few minutes later gave the Raiders their best field position of the day on a punt return. The Raiders were unable to capitalize as they went for it on fourth and three from the 37 and the pass to Josh Jacobs was stopped for no gain.

There haven’t been many highlights for the Raiders early on. This little gem by Renfrow is about it so far.
