Grading each position group on Texas’ offense

Texas’ running back group grades out as an A+.

As Texas enters the thick of spring practice, we are starting to get a feel for the strengths and weaknesses of the roster. The offensive side of the ball has the chance to be exciting in the fall.

The running back room stands out with Bijan Robinson and Roshon Johnson leading the charge. Keilan Robinson, Johnathan Brooks and freshman Jaydon Blue make up one of the top running back rooms in the nation.

Texas’ staff did a great job of improving the tight end and wide receiver positions in the offseason. The addition of two talented quarterbacks Quinn Ewers and Maalik Murphy are excellent talents for Sark to work with. Isaiah Neyor is an experienced wide-out who is capable of making big plays opposite Xavier Worthy.

Kyle Flood faces a huge offseason to develop his offensive line unit. Texas prioritized the high school ranks over the transfer portal to add talent to the group.

Using overall talent, depth and experience as key factors, here is a ranking of each position group on Texas’ offense.

Can Hudson Card still win the quarterback competition at Texas?

While Hudson Card continues to put up a good fight, we likely know how the story will end.

The Longhorns held their first spring scrimmage over the weekend.

Former five-star quarterback Quinn Ewers, the heralded signal-caller from Southlake Carroll, reportedly put on quite a show. Although it was closed to the public, several of his highlights were released by Texas via social media.

Everyone has had their eyes on Ewers since he arrived in Austin, and with good reason. Only one perfectly rated quarterback has come to the Forty Acres (Vince Young), and we know how that story ended. It only heightens the excitement surrounding Ewers becoming the second.

For Ewers to have only been in town for a few weeks and already look comfortable in the offense has to have Longhorns fans extremely giddy (I did not don a blonde wig for nothing folks).

However, in his media availability this week, second-year head coach Steve Sarkisian noted that both Ewers and returning quarterback Hudson Card completed 70% of their passes in the scrimmage. It appears that Card is not going away quietly, and that is what you want to hear.

But can Card still emerge victoriously?

All the evidence at this point says no. There were several factors against Card coming in. One, his pocket presence was shaky. Two, his deep ball accuracy (which is critical in Sarkisian’s offense) was not his strong suit. And third, he was not Sarkisian’s chosen quarterback, whereas Ewers is the guy that Sark is basically putting his career on the line for.

Card needed/needs to be head and shoulders above Ewers to win the job. The fact that he is either neck and neck or behind Ewers slightly suggests that this is Ewers’ team now.

Texas Football: Interesting notes from the latest spring practice

Keep an eye on these…

Texas is gearing up for their annual Orange-White spring game on April 23.

Every week there seems to be improvement across the board, some players are clearly taking advantage of their opportunity to help solidify themselves atop the depth chart.

247Sports’ Chip Brown was able to provide some insight from Texas’ latest spring practice, which included updates on the quarterback, secondary and offensive line positions. Tuesday’s practice marked practice No. 10 of 15 total, and based on some of the notes and observations made, there may be some unexpected leaders in a few position battles.

Although the there are still a few spring practices left and all of fall camp, it’s interesting and telling to see who the coaches are leaning towards early on in the process.

Here are some of the most interesting  notes from Texas’ practice on Tuesday.

Is Texas QB Quinn Ewers separating from Hudson Card already?

This appears to be a fantastic quarterback battle.

With the exception of Vince Young, no other player, and certainly no other quarterback, has been as heralded coming to Texas as has Quinn Ewers.

With a golden arm and golden mullet to match, Ewers received a perfect rating according 247Sports, something Texas target Arch Manning also recently achieved. Steve Sarkisian has a thing for perfection, apparently.

However, no matter how talented a player is, there will always be a learning curve, especially at quarterback and offensive line. There is a reason that most players at these positions redshirt their first years. For quarterbacks, the systems are far more complex than when they were in high school, and for offensive linemen the game is much more physical.

So, it is no surprise that for the past several weeks Hudson Card has looked like the more solid quarterback of the two. Given that he is a very talented player himself and has now been in the system for two years, this should be the expectation.

However, there is evidence that the tide may be turning.

Several national media outlets have suggested that both quarterbacks are neck and neck, but a recent report from Horns247’s Hudson Standish had Ewers as the MVP of the scrimmage on Saturday, and that is significant. What will give Sarkisian the best information on players will likely come from the scrimmages, which are as close to a real game as you can make it.

If Ewers was the MVP this early on, then continues to build on it in the coming weeks, it is likely he will lead the Longhorns as the starting quarterback against ULM on Sept. 3.

Texas Football: Predicting the winners of several position battles

Predicting the winners of some of the most intense position battles in Austin.

Texas is nearing the midway point of spring practices, and while it is still early there are a handful of crucial position battles taking place.

The Longhorns will be featuring new starters across the offensive line, several new faces are expected to emerge at defensive back and wide receiver, and the quarterback competition is one of the hottest in the country.

Texas fans are excited for each of the battles to take place, as they are hopeful that year two under Steve Sarkisian will go much better than the first. Players themselves have even become more vocal about turning the program around, primarily Moro Ojomo’s passionate interview with the media on Thursday.

There’s still several months left for these position battles to take shape, but it’s never too early to predict who will win the starting jobs. Here’s who I believe will start at several key positions in Week 1.

247Sports provides update on Texas’ quarterback competition

Ewers has some ground to make up, but the coaching staff appears to be pleased with his progress.

There are a handful of position battles occurring during Texas’ spring practices, but none more important than the quarterback competition.

Hudson Card is looking to fend off the former No. 1 overall prospect in the country, Quinn Ewers. Ewers etched his name in college football history by deciding to forgo his senior season of high school to cash in on major NIL deals at Ohio State. However, due to being buried on the depth chart after C.J. Stroud’s successful season, Ewers decided to transfer to Texas with hopes of more playing time.

This is Card’s second season in Sarkisian’s offense which seems to be giving him an early advantage over Ewers. Many believe that once Ewers feels more comfortable in the offense it will only be a matter of time before he supplants himself atop the depth chart.

Chris Hummer of 247Sports detailed how Ewers and a handful of other quarterbacks have been performing during spring practices thus far, and touched on what needs to be improved on in order for him to thrive. Here’s what Hummer had to say about the Texas quarterback competition.

Many of the first-team reps at quarterback this spring have gone to Ewers’ competition, Hudson Card, who is a former top-100 recruit and started Texas’ 2021 season opener. But one source recently told 247Sports that Steve Sarkisian and the Texas staff are thrilled with Ewers’ progress and think he’s better than advertised.

In order to end up as the starter, Ewers needs to continue to learn the system and be consistent. Sarkisian sees consistency and steady decision-making as critical traits for his starting quarterback. Texas did not get that last season, from Card or Casey Thompson, but the sense in Austin this offseason is Texas’ QB room is in better shape. Don’t be surprised if you continue to hear Card’s name heavily in consideration to be the Week 1 starter – and he’s been really good this spring, per sources –  but I still think this will ultimately be Ewers’ job to lose.

Ewers has some ground to make up just due to the fact he spent his first season in Columbus, but if he is even half as good as advertised, he could finally be the quarterback that leads Texas over the hump.
