Steve Sarkisian comments of the QB decision timetable

Steve Sarkisian hinted at naming a starting quarterback earlier this offseason compared to last.

Much of the offseason talk around Texas football is about the quarterback battle between redshirt sophomore Hudson Card and redshirt freshman Quinn Ewers.

This marks the second season in a row Texas has dealt with a quarterback controversy. Hudson Card beat out now Nebraksa quarterback Casey Thompson just before the season began.

Card did not hold on to the starting role very long. He was benched after struggling in week two against Arkansas. The Texas quarterback room ended up being a revolving door for much of the 2021 season.

When asked about a timetable for naming a starting quarterback for the 2022 season, Steve Sarkisian hinted a decision made be made earlier this year.

Regardless of who wins the job in week one, Card or Ewers will have to prove it on the field. Sark is not one to sit around while his quarterbacks struggle.

Four things to keep an eye on during Texas’ spring game

Texas’ spring game is must see for a multitude of reasons!

The day is finally upon us, as the Longhorns will be suiting up and playing the closest iteration to a real football game for the first and last time until September.

Just like every Texas spring game, there are many storylines people are looking forward to and this year is no different.

Texas is home to a coaching staff in their second year, an intense quarterback battle featuring one of the highest rated recruits ever in Quinn Ewers, and a former juggernaut program that has been on the wrong side of history for a decade looking to get back.

Many around the country will have their eyes on Texas to determine if all the new additions to the roster will actually lead to improvement. Steve Sarkisian is already starting to feel the pressure of being a struggling head coach at Texas after last season, but he made modifications to the staff and seemed to have filtered out players whose attitudes weren’t great for the culture he is building.

This game means nothing in terms of how the 2022 season will go, as the team doesn’t have everyone on campus yet. Sarkisian actually had to modify the game in order to make sure each quarterback will get a chance to work with the starting unit due to offensive line depth issues.

Here are a few things that would be nice to see during Texas’ spring game.

Can Quinn Ewers or Hudson Card pull away in Texas’ spring game?

The fan base appears to be split on this.

Horn247’s Taylor Estes and Chip Brown have a long-running podcast known as The Flagship.

At the end of the show, they have a segment known as “Love it or Leave It” in which if you answer in the affirmative to the question presented you love it, but if you disagree you leave it.

Estes presented the question of whether or not Hudson Card or Quinn Ewers would be a clear frontrunner after the end of the spring game. Both Brown and Estes left it, with Brown saying that the battle could last through the first week of September. The Texas fan base appears to be split on this notion.

However, I believe there is already a clear frontrunner, and that’s Ewers.

Why? Card has been around for three years, has two years in the system, and yet Ewers is already neck and neck with him. In order for Card to win the job, he needed to be head and shoulders above Ewers heading into the summer and fall. And he has not done that.

While Estes and Brown will publicly disagree, at the present time it appears to many that this is Ewers’ job to lose.

Quinn Ewers may be Texas’ saving grace

Quinn Ewers is already being deemed Texas’ potential savior by CBS Sports.

Even without ever attempting a pass as a college quarterback, the expectations surrounding Texas’ new quarterback Quinn Ewers are astronomically high.

Ewers, who came to Texas after spending what should have been his senior season of high school at Ohio State, has yet to even win the starting job.

He is competing with third-year quarterback Hudson Card, a battle that many believe could take until the season opener to decide. Even with all the uncertainty around Ewers, outlets like CBS Sports still believe he has a chance to resurrect the program while also keeping Steve Sarkisian off the hot seat.

Here is what CBS Sports’

Calling Ewers a generational quarterback prospect is an understatement. The Southlake (Texas) Carroll product emerged as the first perfect 1.0000 quarterback recruit in the 247Sports Composite since Vince Young — the only quarterback to win a national championship on the 40 Acres in the last 50 years. There have only been five other perfect 1.0000 recruits since 2000; for comparison, Trevor Lawrence was a 0.9999.

Quarterback play has doomed the Longhorns for more than a decade. Texas is entering its 13th consecutive season without an All-Big 12 First Team quarterback, so getting a superstar from the program’s own backyard was a must.

He continued mentioning the major upgrades the coaching staff was able to bring in during the offseason in addition to players like star running back Bijan Robinson and receiver Xavier Worthy, but also noted that none are more crucial to the program’s success than Ewers.

Of course, the success rides on Ewers proving to be the Golden Boy — the savior at quarterback who was promised. Ewers has not thrown a live game pass in nearly two years, but his high school career was legendary. Ewers threw for 4,003 yards, 45 touchdowns and three interceptions as a sophomore before leading his Carroll squad to the Texas 6A State Championship Game as a junior. He completed 70% of his passes and averaged more than 10 yards per pass attempt in the highest classification of Texas high school football.

There is a ton of pressure on Texas as a program every year, even with it being in constant disarray. However, with Ewers in burnt orange, this might be the most pressure that Texas will face since the early 2000’s.
