Potential transfer quarterbacks for Notre Dame and if they should pursue

Who do you like from this hypothetical list?

With the quarterback position in such a odd place for Notre Dame, it only makes sense to look around and see who else is out there. Recently, I complied a list of current QB’s in the transfer portal and if they would be a fit for the Irish.

Today, 247Sports Clint Brewster looked at hypothetical portal quarterbacks, so let’s do the same drill and see if they are fits for the Irish if they end up in the portal.

Tale of the Tape: How does Oklahoma matchup against the Texas Longhorns?

As Oklahoma and Texas get set to meet in the Cotton Bowl, who has the edge for this year’s Red River Showdown?

The 118th meeting between the Oklahoma Sooners (3-2, 0-2 Big 12) and the Texas Longhorns (3-2, 1-1) features two teams with varied outlooks through the first five games of the season.

Oklahoma, losers of two straight in 2022, have won four straight matchups against the Longhorns dating back to the 2018 Big 12 championship game. But they head into Red River Showdown as touchdown underdogs to a Texas team that appears to be trending in a positive direction despite two early-season losses.

Texas lost to Alabama at home by one point on a field goal in the final minute of play. A fumble on the first play from scrimmage by Bijan Robinson sunk Texas in overtime against Texas Tech, who kicked the game winner on their first possession in the extra period.

The Cotton Bowl and the Red River Showdown provides an atmosphere where the strange and atypical can happen. Much like we saw a year ago when the underdog Texas Longhorns took a 38-18 lead into halftime, this game can take on an odd complexion regardless of how the two teams have performed in the weeks ahead.

Bryant Crews provided his keys to the game and Ben Dackiw laid out what Oklahoma has to do to pick up a win.

Let’s get ready for the Red River Showdown with this week’s tale of the tape.

5 things the Sooners need to do to beat the Longhorns

5 things that need to go right for the Oklahoma Sooners to pick up a win over the Texas Longhorns in Dallas.

For the first time in over a decade, the Oklahoma Sooners are not viewed as the better team heading into Red River. After back-to-back losses against conference opponents, OU is desperate for a win.

Brent Venables has a chance to save the season with a win in Dallas this weekend. There are a few problems, however, the Longhorns aren’t going to make it easy and the Sooners are reeling from several injuries to key players.

Despite those things, an upset is not out of the question. Here are five things the Sooners need to do to beat the Longhorns and quite possibly revive their season.

Studs and duds from Texas’ big victory over West Virginia

We saw many great performances from the Longhorns on Saturday.

Texas took down West Virginia to pick up its first Big 12 Conference win of the season. The Longhorns got off to an early lead and cruised to a 38-20 victory.

Steve Sarkisian’s Longhorns picked up a much-needed confidence boost with the win.

The Longhorns’ offense proved explosive through the air all game long. Hudson Card threw for a career high 303 yards and three touchdowns. Wide receiver Xavier Worthy even got in on the action with a 33-yard touchdown toss of his own in the second quarter.

West Virginia failed to move the ball effectively on the ground. The Mountaineers averaged just two yards per carry against the Texas defensive front. Quarterback JT Daniels got into a rhythm late but the game was already well out of reach.

We saw many great performances from the Horns in this matchup. Here is a look at the studs and duds from Texas’ clutch win over West Virginia.

Big 12 quarterback power rankings after week 5

The Big 12 has seen some really good quarterback play in the 2022 season, but who stands atop this week’s QB power rankings?

When the transfer portal took Caleb Williams, Spencer Rattler, Gerry Bohanon and Casey Thompson out of the Big 12, an opportunity arose for new quarterbacks to assert themselves as the best in the league.

The transfer portal also brought in several new starters: Dillon Gabriel at Oklahoma, Adrian Martinez at Kansas State, and J.T. Daniels at West Virginia.

Opening weekend featured just two players returning as the starting quarterback for their squad; Spencer Sanders and Jalon Daniels. Hudson Card, Max Duggan and Donovan Smith started games for their teams last year but weren’t the Week 1 starter. Injuries provided opportunities, and they’ve taken advantage, coming up with big-time performances at times through the first five weeks of the season.

With more than a month of action in the books, it’s time to update the quarterback power rankings in the Big 12.

Five takeaways from Texas’ 38-20 win over West Virginia

Takeaways from Texas’ much-needed win against West Virginia.

Texas is back in the win column after a dominant 38-20 victory over West Virginia on Saturday.

Steve Sarkisian’s squad put together its most complete performance of the season, playing complete games in all three phases.

Xavier Worthy was the star of the show for the Longhorns. The sophomore wide receiver hauled in seven passes for 119 yards and two touchdowns. He even added a 33-yard touchdown pass on a beautiful trick play in the second quarter.

Quarterback Hudson Card played his best game of his college career. Card picked apart the West Virginia secondary for over 300 yards and three scores. The redshirt sophomore is looking more and more comfortable each week.

Texas’ defense kept the dynamic West Virginia offense in check all game with great tackling and improved pass rush. The Longhorns sacked JT Daniels three times while linebacker Jaylan Ford lead the way with 14 tackles.

Here are five takeaways from Texas’ bounce-back victory over West Virginia.

Oklahoma State beats Baylor, Kansas remains undefeated: Big 12 Power Rankings after Week 5

Oklahoma State and Kansas continued their winning ways, and TCU gets a bump after their win over Oklahoma in this week’s power rankings.

The Big 12 conference has three undefeated teams remaining after week five. Oklahoma State knocked off 2021’s Big 12 champion Baylor. Kansas survived a last-second rally from Iowa State, and TCU dominated the Oklahoma Sooners to remain among the ranks of unbeaten teams.

Big 12 play in the early going has provided some fantastic games and storylines. The resurgent Kansas Jayhawks have earned the right to host College Gameday next Saturday when they host the TCU Horned Frogs.

Kansas State followed up their performance against Oklahoma with another strong outing, this time against Texas Tech, and the Longhorns rebounded from their loss in Lubbock with an 18-point win over West Virginia.

After week five’s action, let’s update the Big 12 power rankings, shall we?

Texas DC Pete Kwiatkowski helps Texas top West Virginia, 38-20

Kwiatkowski’s incorporation of tight man coverage lifts Texas past West Virginia.

A tumultuous week had an uneventful finish on Saturday. After last week’s overtime loss, the Texas Longhorns responded in a big way defeating West Virginia, 38-20.

The Texas defense looked nothing like the defense that showed up in Lubbock last week. The Longhorns showed tight coverage, got to the quarterback and got off the field on third and fourth downs.

Texas defensive coordinator Pete Kwiatkowski mixed in zone coverage some in the first half but waited until the Longhorns had built a lead to play zone consistently. After taking a 35-14 lead, Texas allowed West Virginia to knock itself out with long, clock-eating drives.

Offensively, Hudson Card led multiple scoring drives relying mostly on Xavier Worthy and Ja’Tavion Sanders as primary targets. Card put the ball in harms way a few times, but Texas receivers intervened to make spectacular plays.

Card completed 21 of 27 passes for 303 yards. He finished the day with three touchdowns. Xavier Worthy led all receivers with 7 catches for 119 receiving yards.

Bijan Robinson crossed the century mark on the final drive, finishing with 21 rushes for 101 yards and a touchdown.

Steve Sarkisian will have the challenge of keeping players humble heading into Red River following their impressive showing. Sarkisian will welcome that challenge as Texas improves to 3-2 overall and 1-1 in conference play.

Seven players to watch in Texas vs. West Virginia

Seven Texas players can take over the game and silence outside noise.

Texas has a significant opportunity on Saturday.

It can quiet the outside noise and build momentum with a win against West Virginia. Steve Sarkisian’s squad will need a handful of players to step up for that to happen.

Upperclassmen who plan to depart are only guaranteed eight more scheduled opportunities, but even that doesn’t account for injury. The Texas defense figures to have multiple players ready to improve upon last week’s performance.

DeMarvion Overshown will have a chance to play a full game on Saturday after sitting for a targeting penalty. The Texas front six should have a strong performance against the West Virginia offensive line if given time to perform.

On the offensive side, a group of veteran leaders led by Roschon Johnson will want to keep all goals intact for their final season. Here are seven players to watch in this matchup.

Early expectations for Texas-West Virginia

You might see a heavy dose of Jordan Whittington this week.

Texas looks to get back in the win column against West Virginia on Saturday. This should be a winnable game for the Longhorns, despite West Virginia’s convincing win over Virginia Tech last week.

Offensively, Texas should be able to score on the Mountaineers. Steve Sarkisian and company were able to put up 34 points on the road against a solid Texas Tech defense. They did so with Hudson Card leading the offense.

As for the Texas defense, I would expect more of the same until proven otherwise. Even after emphasizing running tighter coverages this offseason, the Texas defense reverted to the same approach they used last year. Soft coverage hurt the Longhorns defense, but I’m not sure the defensive staff truly believes it did.

This one should be a close game again for Texas. You might see a heavy dose of Jordan Whittington with Xavier Worthy not fully healthy. Steve Sarkisian may need Quinn Ewers available to win this game.
