Who plays QB for Oregon if Bo Nix doesn’t return in 2023?

A lot of signs are pointing toward Bo Nix returning in 2023. However, if he were to leave, who would start at QB for the Ducks?

At this point, many signs seem to be pointing toward the idea that quarterback Bo Nix will return to Eugene for another year with the Oregon Ducks in 2023.

It has already been confirmed that he will play in the Holiday Bowl vs. North Carolina, which is not something that many players do if they are set to enter the NFL Draft. Often times, a player that is done with his collegiate career will opt out of bowl games and choose instead to get ready for the NFL combine rather than play in an exhibition that offers more opportunity to hurt his career, rather than help it.

However, we still aren’t 100% certain on whether or not Nix will return for his final year of collegiate eligibility with the Ducks. While many signs point to it, we can’t know for sure until the announcement is made.

So for argument’s sake, let’s say that Nix does end up declaring for the draft and saying that his college career is over. What happens then?

Who plays quarterback for Oregon in 2023 if Nix is not in the picture?

That is certainly a big question to answer, and one that will have major ramifications on how competitive the Ducks are next season. We took a look a few options, should the situation arise where Nix is not in the picture.

TCU the favorite to land Texas QB transfer Hudson Card

It appears TCU is the betting favorite to land Hudson Card.

The NCAA transfer portal is filling up with players by the minute this week.

One of the more notable players in the transfer portal is Texas quarterback Hudson Card. The former Longhorn should have no shortage of options at his disposal.

To go along with the craziness of the transfer portal, people can now place bets on where a player is headed next. Bookies.com released odds on where Card is expected to take his talents for the 2023 season.

  • TCU (+300)
  • Notre Dame (+400)
  • Wisconsin (+475)
  • Kentucky (+500)
  • UTSA (+900)
  • Coastal Carolina & Oklahoma State (+1500)
  • The field (+600)

TCU would be an intriguing fit for Card. Sonny Dykes is a proven quarterback developer in a system that fits Card’s skillsets. The Frogs could look to bring in Card to add immediate experience to its quarterback unit.

Card threw for 1,523 yards and 11 touchdowns in 19 games Texas during his Texas career. He played well in relief duty in four games early this season while Quinn Ewers dealt with an injury.

Notre Dame football: Compelling quarterbacks continue to enter transfer portal

Which quarterback do you want Notre Dame to focus greatest on in the portal?

The Monday following the conference championship games in college football suddenly has the feel of national signing day all over again,  In a way, anyway.  Just instead of young men declaring where they’re going to play football, they’re instead saying their services are open for those interested.

Notre Dame is certainly a team that will be interested in adding a quarterback through the portal.  [autotag]Drew Pyne[/autotag] announced he’s entering it, and the lack of experience at the position for 2023 is a concern.  Who will Notre Dame target?

We have a running tracker of each quarterback to officially enter the portal.  As of this posting, there are nearly 60 names in it – go ahead and check it out or there will also be a link to it at the bottom of this post.

Here are a handful of names that are officially entered that may be competing to start in 2023 at Notre Dame.

Should Notre Dame pursue Texas quarterback in portal?

Should Notre Dame be looking to the Longhorn state for help at quarterback next year? Thanks to @jhickey24 & @longhornswire for the scouting report!

College football’s postseason and offseason are so different now than they were just a few short years ago. One reason is the transfer portal. Welcome to recruiting on steroids that moves at the pace of a Formula 1 car instead of a big semi. Thanks to the portal, teams can freely recruit players from other schools to fill positions of need.

Notre Dame hasn’t had a huge number of players enter via the portal, but some select difference-makers certainly have. [autotag]Ben Skowronek[/autotag] led the team in receiving yards in 2020 after transferring from Northwestern. [autotag]Jack Coan[/autotag] went 11-1 as the starting quarterback in the 2021 regular season after being passed over at Wisconsin due to injury. And this season another former Northwestern star, safety [autotag]Brandon Joseph[/autotag], made the biggest impact as a transfer.

We don’t expect Notre Dame to be bring in loads of new faces as did USC, LSU and others did via the portal last offseason, but we do expect them to search for a veteran quarterback. [autotag]Drew Pyne[/autotag]’s limited ceiling, [autotag]Tyler Buchner[/autotag]’s never-ending injury concerns and the lack of experience on the rest of the depth chart tells you exactly why it makes sense.

So with that in mind, we’re taking a look at potential quarterbacks for Notre Dame to land via the portal. What is their backstory? Why are they leaving their schools? What is their potential as collegiate starter in 2022? We’re seeking out the help of our experts with connections to other programs in doing so.

Texas quarterback [autotag]Hudson Card[/autotag] announced Tuesday that he’ll enter the portal. Could the former Longhorns starter be a fit for Notre Dame? Here’s how our colleague, Joey Hickey at Longhorns Wire breaks down Card.

Notre Dame quarterback transfer target off the board already

On to the next one

It didn’t take long for former Michigan quarterback [autotag]Cade McNamara[/autotag] to find a new home. Just a few days after entering the transfer portal, McNamara looks like he is heading to Iowa as reported by ESPN’s college football reporter Pete Thamel.

It’s an interesting move, especially since Iowa had one of the worst offenses we have seen in a very long time. The Hawkeyes averaged 17.4 points a game this season, good for 123rd in the country and that includes scores by their defense. “Powerhouse offenses” such as FIU, Wyoming and Texas State are just a few that ranked above what Iowa did this season.

McNamara was linked to the Irish, and many thought [autotag]Marcus Freeman[/autotag] would make a run at him. Looks like the Irish will need to set their sights on a different quarterback, and, if I had a say on it, that would be former Texas Longhorn [autotag]Hudson Card[/autotag].

Team Building: Where Texas football goes from here after portal losses

Texas should finish with a net gain of talent after additions despite portal losses.

The football season isn’t over yet, but free agency has begun in college football. Multiple Texas players announced that they are looking for new homes on Tuesday.

Hudson Card headlines the group of departing players. Card played solid football in his game action this season and could garner plenty of interest from teams in need of a quarterback.

Other notable departures include Andrej Karic, Jamier Johnson and Troy Omeire.

The losses in and of themselves aren’t program killers but the loss of quality depth is suboptimal for the Texas staff. The reality is, every team will deal with portal casualties and the Longhorns could see more players depart.

The likelihood is that Texas will end up with a net gain of talent this offseason. Given their resources and improved on-field play this season, Steve Sarkisian should be able to improve the roster before next fall.

Let’s look at where Texas might add talent and depth in the offseason.

Texas Football: Transfer portal departures tracker

Here is a tracker of notable Longhorns who have entered the portal.

The NCAA transfer portal is a mainstay in the world of college football in 2022. Players having the freedom to transfer without punishment creates a new landscape in the sport.

Steve Sarkisian and his staff will undoubtedly work to use the portal to their advantage. Last season Texas added key contributors such as quarterback Quinn Ewers, defensive back Ryan Watts and linebacker Diamonte Tucker-Dorsey.

Like most programs across the country, Texas is expected to see a group of players seek new opportunities. It should be a very active transfer portal season following year two of the Steve Sarkisian era. An important thing to remember is a player entering the portal does not guarantee said player is leaving the program.

The transfer portal did not officially open until Dec. 5 but players began stating their intentions beforehand.

Here is an ongoing tracker of notable Longhorn players who have entered the transfer portal thus far:

Steve Sarkisian suggests an open QB battle during the offseason

Quinn Ewers may have won the job for the 2022 campaign but his spot is not guaranteed moving forward.

Steve Sarkisian hinted at a quarterback competition over the course of the offseason.

Quinn Ewers may have won the job for the 2022 campaign but his spot is not guaranteed moving forward. The Texas head coach stated during his Monday press conference he plans to have an open quarterback battle over the offseason.

“So, like every year, we’ll go into the offseason and wipe the slate clean and let these guys compete and battle and see what it looks like, because that’s what makes us better. And, ultimately, when other guys are working at their craft, that should motivate us to want to continue to improve our game.”

Texas is expected to have no shortage of talent options at the quarterback spot going forward.

Quinn Ewers returns as the favorite to win the job yet again. He faces a crucial offseason to develop his skills and gain more comfort with the offense.

Potentially fighting for the starting gig behind Ewers are redshirt junior Hudson Card and redshirt freshman Maalik Murphy. Each player was highly recruited in their respective classes and been praised by Sarkisian during the season.

Joining the stacked quarterback room in Austin for the upcoming semester is No. 1 overall prospect Arch Manning. The five-star is going to add immediate competition to the unit from day one.
