Purdue Boilermakers announce starting QB change ahead of matchup vs. Oregon Ducks

The Boilermakers are making a change at the QB1 spot against the Ducks this week.

While Oregon fans are justifiably elated over the Ducks’ win against Ohio State this past Saturday, the Ducks have shifted their focus to Purdue.

In a wrinkle, the Boilermakers announced a quarterback change on Monday morning. Purdue’s Week 1 starter Hudson Card entered the concussion protocol before the Boilermakers’ Week 7 matchup against Illinois. Starting in his place was redshirt freshman Ryan Browne, who had Purdue’s offense humming better than it has all season.

On Monday, Purdue head coach Ryan Walters announced that although Card might be medically cleared for Friday’s game against Oregon, Browne will start, according to Indy Star reporter Nathan Baird.

“The way he played, it would be unfair not to,” Walters said.

Although Purdue lost to Illinois this weekend, it looked like a different team than the Boilermakers of the first six weeks. Through five games, Card had a 63.4 completion percentage and averaged less than 150 passing yards per game. This weekend, Browne completed 18 of 26 attempts for 297 yards and 3 touchdowns.

The Illinois defense is not on par with Oregon’s, but it is a quality defense, so Purdue’s offensive explosion this weekend shouldn’t be taken lightly. The Boilermakers also are known for ruining the seasons of unsuspecting top teams who travel to West Lafayette.

The Ducks still have the edge in this game, but the Browne-led Boilermakers aren’t a joke.

The Wisconsin Badgers defeated Purdue 52-6 on Saturday afternoon at Camp Randall Stadium. It was the team’s 18th consecutive victory against their Big Ten rival and the largest margin of victory in the series’ history.

Quarterback Braedyn Locke completed 20 of 31 passes for 359 yards and three touchdowns while also throwing two interceptions. He became the first Wisconsin QB to throw for more than 300 yards in a Big Ten game since Joel Stave in 2015.

On the receiving end, wide receiver Trech Kekahuna had himself a day, reeling in six catches for 134 yards and two touchdowns, including a 69-yard score in the third quarter. Vinny Anthony also added a touchdown through the air, scoring with a 52-yard catch and run in the first half.

The Badgers’ dominance wasn’t only through the air, however, as the team also combined for 228 rushing yards on 41 carries. Tawee Walker led the way with 19 totes for 94 yards and three touchdowns, securing his second straight multi-touchdown performance.

The Badgers will look to make it back-to-back wins when they travel to face Rutgers in Piscataway on Saturday in Week 7. In the meantime, here are some of the best photos from Wisconsin’s big win:

Wisconsin vs. Purdue: Prediction, point spread, odds, best bet

Will Wisconsin win a 17th straight versus Purdue?

The Badgers (2-1) play the Purdue on Friday and if you’re looking to do some last-minute betting research, you’re in luck! We’ll give you the latest point spread, money line odds and over/under number, as well as the information you’ll need to make the smartest bet.

The game starts at 6 PM and can be seen on Fox Sports 1.

Wisconsin is coming off of a 35-14 Week 3 win over Georgia Southern at Camp Randall. The defense was able to force six turnovers, snatching five interceptions while also recovering a fumble. Safety Hunter Wohler recorded 10 tackles, including a sack, while intercepting two passes in the victory, earning himself the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week honors.

Purdue on the other hand, lost to Syracuse 35-20, turning the ball over four times by losing three fumbles and throwing an interception. The Boilermakers’ defense in particular, struggled to stop Syracuse’s quarterback Garrett Shrader from compiling 195 yards and four touchdowns on 25 carries.

Wisconsin will look to keep the good times going in Week 4 and this is how BetMGM sees the game going:

  • Point spread: Wisconsin -5.5
  • Money line: Wisconsin -225 / Purdue +180
  • Over-under: 53.5

It’s unclear exactly what injuries each team are dealing with but here’s the most recent info:

Wisconsin (Week 3 Injury Report) :

  • CB Michael Mack

  • WR Trech Kekahuna

  • WR Tommy McIntosh

  • CB Max Lofy

  • TE Riley Nowakowski

  • WR Grady O’Neill

  • TE Cam Large

  • C Jake Renfro

  • OLB Aaron Witt

  • OL Peyton Lange

  • WR Chris Brooks

  • TE Jack Pugh

  • DE Isaiah Mullens

Purdue (As of Monday Sept. 18):

  • Paul Piferi (Questionable)
  • Gus Hartwig (Questionable)
  • Salim Turner-Muhammad (Questionable)

With both quarterbacks Tanner Mordecai (Wisconsin) and Hudson Card (Purdue) making their Big Ten conference play debuts, I feel like both guys will look to prove themselves. Both defenses struggle to stop big plays and I feel like Wisconsin has more home run hitters, so they’ll be able to pull away from the Boilermakers to grab their third win of the year.

Prediction: 34-24 Wisconsin

WATCH: Badgers analyst takes DL coach for a ride

Coach Scruggs gives his keys to success

Ahead of the team’s Week 4 matchup with Purdue on the road Friday at 6PM, Badgers radio color analyst Mark Tauscher took defensive line coach Greg Scruggs for a ride.

Tauscher asks Scruggs about his opinion on the defense following their 35-14 win over Georgia Southern at home in Week 3. The coach explains how he’s a “crazy coach” and how he wants more from his guys in West Lafayette.

Part of his “keys to success” was the fact that the Badgers need to make the Boilermakers’ quarterback Hudson Card uncomfortable while on offense, utilizing their running backs (Chez Mellusi and Braelon Allen).

Everything you need to know about the 2023 Purdue Boilermakers

Purdue Boilermakers team preview:

Wisconsin travels to West Lafayette, Indiana Friday night for its Big Ten opener against the Purdue Boilermakers.

The Badgers have a lot to fix after a sleepy 35-14 win over Georgia Southern. The defense is getting beat through the air consistently, while the offense is still struggling to put together consistent drives.

There is good news and bad news with the matchup against Purdue. The good: Wisconsin hasn’t lost to Purdue since 2003 and never seems fazed by the road environment. The bad: A Friday night game doesn’t bode great for an offense struggling with consistency and execution.

Either way, it’s a matchup Wisconsin must win if it wants to win the Big Ten West for the first time since 2019.

Before the matchup, here is everything you need to know about the 2023 Purdue Boilermakers:

Notable QBs that transferred from Texas starting elsewhere

There is a handful of former Texas quarterbacks starting elsewhere this season.

With Sam Ehlinger leading the charge a few seasons ago, Texas was thought to have a very bright group of quarterbacks behind him. Continue reading “Notable QBs that transferred from Texas starting elsewhere”

Top five Big Ten football offensive transfers for 2023

The Big Ten has some intriguing offensive playmakers arriving from the transfer portal #B1G

Welcome to college football in 2023 where the transfer portal is a key factor in building a successful and winning program. This season many big names came to the Big Ten and an intriguing number of them are quarterbacks or offensive skill players.

Evaluating transfers is a bit like evaluating recruiting, it’s not necessarily about snagging the big fish such as Sam Hartman, but making sure the guy you snag can fill a need and fit a role the team needs.

We see many schools grab transfer after transfer, and they flame out not because of their lack of talent, but because the situation was not a great fit to begin with

Here are the five incoming transfers that should check every box as a difference maker for their new team.

Three Texas quarterbacks the Longhorns should have stuck with

Did Texas give up on these quarterbacks too soon?

Ever since Colt McCoy left the program, Texas has not been a beacon of consistency at the quarterback position.

Outside of Sam Ehlinger, who went down as one of the best quarterbacks in program history statistically, Texas’ quarterback situation has been a sore subject throughout the past decade. One of the main reasons is the series of quarterback decisions that likely could have gone in the other direction.

Whether there was too short of a leash or maybe the wrong quarterback was chosen in the first place, there are three specific instances that stand out recently.

Here are the three quarterbacks that Texas should have stuck with who could have helped them win more games at that time. This isn’t to say that the quarterback that started over them didn’t go on to be better, but at the time it could have gone a different direction with the other passer at the helm.

Purdue’s most glaring question heading into 2023

How good is the marriage of OC Graham Harrell and QB Hudson Card?

It will be a completely different look for the Purdue Boilermakers when they take the field on Sept. 2 against the Fresno State Bulldogs to open the 2023 campaign.

Jeff Brohm served as the head coach over the last six seasons in West Lafayette, Indiana. He returned to his alma mater to run the Louisville Cardinals program after Scott Satterfield left for the Cincinnati Bearcats opening.

The Boilermakers turned to a rising name in the coaching community to run the program. Ryan Walters was the architect behind the Illinois Fighting Illini defense that ranked among the nation’s best. Now he gets the opportunity to run his own program after 13 years as an assistant. Walters played safety for the Colorado Buffaloes from 2004 to 2008.

In Paul Myerberg’s series on power rankings and one big question for each conference team, he identified one major inquiry for Purdue. The Boilermakers were ranked No. 11 in the Big Ten.

‘How good is the marriage of OC Graham Harrell and QB Hudson Card?’

New Purdue coordinator Graham Harrell takes over an offense that loses three huge pieces in quarterback Aidan O’Connell, wide receiver Charlie Jones and tight end Payne Durham. In comes Texas transfer Hudson Card, who started multiple games the past two seasons with 11 touchdowns and just two interceptions. Early feedback this spring has been positively glowing: Card has been singled out by teammates for his production, command and leadership qualities during the transition to a new staff. – Myerberg

Card was dependable at Texas but it felt like he never really got a fair shake as the starting quarterback. Casey Thompson was originally the backup before taking over for the Longhorns in 2021. Last season, Texas had former Ohio State signee Quinn Ewers under center. Given that Arch Manning was coming to town, it was time for Card to find a new opportunity.

He will now be paired up with another former Big 12 quarterback, Graham Harrell. The Red Raiders’ all-time leading passer has been making the rounds as an assistant with Oklahoma State, Washington State, North Texas, USC, and West Virginia. Perhaps this will be Harrell’s opportunity to shine with a more defensive minded head coach.

We will soon find out if this marriage is a match made in heaven.

Dates to know for the Texas football offseason

Put these offseason dates for Texas football in your calendar.

The Texas football season is year round. Running backs coach Tashard Choice updated fans on how the Longhorns will spend their offseason and how supporters can participate in offseason activity.

This offseason figures to be less eventful than the last despite plenty of talented players pushing for playing time. Head coach Steve Sarkisian has more reason for faith in his quarterback Quinn Ewers than he had in a neck-and-neck quarterback battle with Hudson Card. Now, the team can focus on fine-tuning its lineup rather than opting for an overhaul.

Multiple players will garner fans’ attention led by freshman quarterback Arch Manning. The Louisiana product likely won’t see as much playing time this season, but spring will give fans a first look at Arch in burnt orange.

Jalen Catalon, AD Mitchell and Isaiah Neyor figure to be the biggest impact additions for the team this year. Their impact will be worth monitoring over the spring and fall.

Here are a few dates to know about the Longhorns’ offseason timeline.
