Houston beat West Virginia on a walk-off Hail Mary TD in what could be the wildest finish of the week

HOUSTON!

The Houston Cougars weren’t afraid of only having three seconds in the game to score a walk-off Hail Mary touchdown.

Indeed, Houston quarterback Donovan Smith made one of the best throws you’ll see this college football season on a last-second laser to the end zone on West Virginia’s defense to try and win the game.

As the ball bobbled between hands as it hit receivers and defenders, it’d be Cougars wideout Stephon Johnson who would snag the pass for the walk-off touchdown and the 41-39 win for Houston.

This was the kind of dramatic finish that college football fans dream of, and it’d be Johnson to haul in the score as the Cougars would get the best of the Mountaineers right at the last second.

Just look at how the probability swung in Houston’s direction as that final pass hit Johnson’s hands.

Like, woah. This was Christmas morning on a Thursday night for Houston fans as they got the win in the most stunning way possible.

College Football Week 2 Winners and Losers: Texas is actually back, Alabama dynasty may be over

Texas is back, the Alabama dynasty might be crumbling and other takeaways from Week 2 of the college football season.

Week 2 of the college football season has come and gone, and it was certainly a doozy.

The highlight came in Tuscaloosa as Texas handed Alabama its first non-conference loss at Bryant-Denny Stadium since coach Nick Saban’s first season in 2007, sending a message to its future SEC foe.

In addition to the Longhorns announcing themselves under Steve Sarkisian, Miami seems to have made some strides in Year 2 under Mario Cristobal after handing Texas A&M a loss that will surely be frustrating for Aggies fans.

Deion Sanders kept Colorado rolling in its home-opener against Nebraska, as well, setting up a potentially fascinating matchup between likely unbeaten teams when the Buffs travel to face Oregon in Week 4.

With the second weekend of the season now behind us, here were the winners and losers.

Dana Holgorsen’s thoughts on Texas leaving: ‘Screw them’

Dana Holgerson…not a big Longhorns fan.

Texas has always been enemies to the rest of the Big 12 due to the fact that they carry themselves as the national brand they are. However, there is a new reason the rest of the conference dislikes them.

After announcing that they were departing for the SEC, it has been made abundantly clear by the remaining teams and even Big 12 Commissioner Brett Yormark that they won’t be missed. Over the past few days, the commissioner publicly rooted against Texas, and now the latest slam by a conference foe came via Houston head coach Dana Holgorsen.

The former West Virginia head coach was asked recently about both Texas and Oklahoma leaving for the SEC, but it clearly seemed to be directed at the Longhorns. His answer was short and simple.

“Screw them. They can go wherever they want,” Holgorsen said on his radio show, via the Houston Chronicle. “They don’t want us and we don’t want them.”

The Longhorns will be traveling to Houston to take on the Cougars for their Week 7 matchup. It is safe to say that they will have some bulletin board material to help motivate them.

2023 College Football Rankings 1-133: First Look

Houston Football Schedule What To Know: Who do the Cougars miss from the Big 12 slate?

It’s sort of an interesting call for the Big 12 newbie.

Houston doesn’t miss any of the Texas teams.

Texas, TCU, Texas Tech, Baylor – they’re all there. It also gets to keep its date with its former American Athletic Conference brothers, going to UCF and hosting Cincinnati. However, there’s no BYU to deal with.

There’s bit of a downside here, especially with the geographical aspect to how the schedule plays out. Not facing Oklahoma and BYU is great, but not playing Iowa State – it has to prove it can bounce back after last year – and missing Kansas – even the improved version – isn’t great.

However …

Houston Football Schedule What Really Matters

No, really. Houston is all about Texas, Texas, Texas – the state as well as the program.

Yes, Texas is a big place, but it’s still part of the overall branding puzzle that three of the road games are at Baylor, Texas Tech, and out of conference – but in the same city – as Rice. Throw in home dates against UTSA and Sam Houston, and ten of the 12 games are against teams from Texas or home games.

To take this even further, the first game outside of Texas isn’t until October 28th at Kansas State. The only other date outside the borders is at UCF to close out the regular season.

Houston Football Schedule What To Know: What does it all really mean?

Can Houston put together the team to match the promising schedule?

Getting TCU, Texas, and Oklahoma State at home is a massive help, there isn’t a run of three road games in four weeks like others have to deal with, and there isn’t anyone on the slate the team can’t handle – really, UTSA is the toughest non-conference game?

With that said, just because there are so many big games in Texas, and even with all of those home games, it doesn’t mean the Cougars are about to rip through 2023 considering how much the team struggled in 2022.

Radiance Technologies Independence Bowl What Happened

Clayton Tune ran, Clayton Tune connected with KeSean Carter for a 41-yard play on 1st-and-30, Clayton Tune found Nathaniel Dell for a 12-yard touchdown pass with 20 seconds remaining to close out a 92-yard drive for the game-winning score.

Louisiana got up 13-0, starting out with a four-yard touchdown catch from Johnny Lumpkin, but it could only manage three Kenneth Almendares field goals the rest of the way. Three turnovers – including one deep in Houston territory – left the door open for the Cougars, and they busted through scoring 17 unanswered points.

Both offenses were cold – literally. There were big problems in the press box – the elevator got stuck – and on the field considering Shreveport, Louisiana and the two teams weren’t used to 20-degree weather. Both teams were were intense and played hard, but the weather was a factor.

Radiance Technologies Independence Bowl Fun Stats

– Turnovers: Louisiana 3 (one came on a last gasp drive) – Houston 0. They all made a big difference.

– The teams combined to convert 6-of-25 third down tries and 6-of-8 fourth down chances.

– Houston WR KeSean Carter caught three passes for 104 yards and a score, and Nathaniel Dell – who’s going to turn pro – caught six passes for 44 yards and two scores including the game-winner.

Radiance Technologies Independence Bowl What It All Means

That game was so 2022 Houston. Underwhelm for most of the game, stay alive in key moments, and when absolutely needed, pull the game out with a one score win. It was the second year in a row QB Clayton Tune came up with a game-winning score late in a bowl game, and now the program has won two in a row after losing four straight.

It’s also a fun way to go into life in the Big 12. It might have been a relatively disappointing season overall, but the eight-win campaign made it 20 victories over the last two years after two straight losing seasons.

Louisiana had chance after chance to put the game away, and couldn’t do it. It was undermanned compared to the high-powered Cougars, but it played well to hold on time and again. Unfortunately, the drives ending in field goals instead of touchdowns – and two turnovers before the late one – left the door open.

After three double-digit win season, it was a drop-off with the program’s first losing season since 2017 and the first bowl loss after winning three straight. It was a rebuilding year under Michael Desormeaux, and it wasn’t bad, but a win in this would’ve been a big deal for the program.

2022-2023 Bowl Schedule, Predictions

Houston’s kickoff tee retriever stole the hearts of college football fans during Cougars’ Independence Bowl win

A legend.

The Independence Bowl provided some thrilling entertainment Friday with Houston rallying to score the go-ahead touchdown against Louisiana with 20 seconds left in the game, before locking up the 23-16 victory with a super late interception against Ragin’ Cajuns.

But the biggest hero of the game turned out to be Houston’s kickoff tee retriever, Hawk (who goes by Stone Cold Big Hawk on Twitter). With his pizzazz, style and bellyflop, he stole the hearts of college football fans everywhere when he took the field to grab the tee.

Not only did Hawk bellyflop on the field before grabbing the tee, but he also sprinted back to the sideline and exited the field with an impressive tuck-and-roll kind of move.

Between his signature on-field moves — this is what he does — and his mullet, he absolutely stole the show, despite the bowl game coming down to the final seconds.

Seriously, what a legend.
