Alabama falls in Coaches Poll despite impressive Top 25 win

The 31 coaches who make up the Coaches Poll dropped Alabama in the rankings despite the Crimson Tide’s impressive win over Illinois.

Despite an impressive victory over a ranked Big Ten school last Wednesday, Nate Oats’ Alabama basketball team fell in this week’s USA TODAY Sports men’s basketball coaches poll.

Alabama (4-1 overall) fell two spots to No. 9 after beating previously 20th-ranked Illinois, 100-87, in the C.M. Newton Classic at Legacy Arena in Birmingham. Grant Nelson scored 23 points to lead the Tide past the Illini. Auburn transfer Aden Holloway poured in 18.

Rick Barnes’ Tennessee Volunteers (6-0) and Mark Pope’s Kentucky Wildcats (5-0) both jumped Alabama in the top 10, as did Kelvin Sampson’s Houston Cougars (3-1), who play the Crimson Tide in this week’s Players Era Festival out in Las Vegas Tuesday.

Tipoff for Alabama vs. Houston is 7 p.m. CT Tuesday. The game will be televised on TBS. The Players Era Festival is a first of its kind — a glorified cash scramble by participating schools for various NIL war funds ($9 million total, according to various reports).

ESPN’s Matchup Predictor currently gives Houston a 71.9 percent chance of beating Alabama.

The top five of the new Coaches Poll remained the same. Bill Self’s Kansas Jayhawks (5-0) stayed at No. 1 with two-time defending national champion UConn at No. 2. Bruce Pearl’s Auburn Tigers were No. 3. Gonzaga (No. 4) and Iowa State (No. 5) rounded out the top five.

Tennessee rose to No. 6 with Houston at No. 7 and Kentucky at No. 8. Alabama ranked one spot ahead of the Duke Blue Devils and freshman sensation Cooper Flagg.

No. 3 Houston defeats Texas, 82-61

Texas stays on the NCAA Tournament bubble in a blowout loss to Houston.

The Houston Cougars (22-3) shellacked the Texas Longhorns (16-9) on Saturday. The loss continues the Longhorns’ recent trend of following a win with a loss in Big 12 play.

Texas falls to 2-4 in its last six games. It’s not the stretch the team hoped for after a slow start to conference play. While the effort was there for the Longhorns early, the game wasn’t close.

Houston reached 60 points before Texas scored 40. The Cougars weren’t all that efficient from the three-point line either. The team built a decisive early lead despite a 2-for-10 start from three-point range. They finished 8-for-23 from behind the arc.

Texas’ didn’t have many good offensive performances on the day. Texas guard Max Abmas shot a disappointing 2-for-14 from the field with seven points. The closest to a good offensive performance came from Texas forward Dylan Disu who scored 16 points on 5-for-13 shooting. Forward Chendall Weaver added 11 points.

With six games remaining, the Longhorns have two losses to spare to comfortably reach the NCAA Tournament with 20 wins. The final six games are home battles with Kansas State, Oklahoma State and No. 25 Oklahoma, and road trips to face No. 6 Kansas, Texas Tech and No. 12 Baylor.

Texas Basketball: Preparation begins for a rematch with No. 3 Houston

The Longhorns face another tough test against the Houston Cougars.

It’s crunch time in college basketball. Teams on the bubble across the country are looking to secure a spot in the NCAA Tournament. Texas is one of those teams.

The Texas Longhorns (16-8) face the Houston Cougars (21-3) on Saturday. With no game in between now and then, the Longhorns should have plenty of time to prepare. They’re going to need it.

The two teams faced earlier this season in the Moody Center in Austin. Texas battled back from an 11-point second half deficit to send the game to overtime, but the better team separated. Houston won the game on an 11-7 overtime period, 76-72.

Fast forward to Saturday where Texas will again face one of the top NCAA title contenders on the road. The venue ramps up the degree of difficulty for the Longhorns and head coach Rodney Terry.

Houston doesn’t often lose at home. The Cougars are 13-0 when playing at the Fertitta Center in Houston. Terry and company will be due significant credit if they can find a way to win.

The battle for Texas will come down to rebounding perhaps more than anything else. Houston head coach Kelvin Sampson reiterated the importance of rebounding following the Cougars’ win over the Longhorns stating that rebounding has been key to his teams’ success. It wasn’t coachspeak.

Houston won the rebounding battle in the last matchup, 47-36. In a game that went to overtime, a disparity that wide can change the outcome.

Texas is still an unfinished product. Even in Saturday’s 94-58 win over West Virginia, the Mountaineers brought in more rebounds than the Longhorns. It took Dylan Disu shooting 7-for-10 from the three point line to earn that margin of victory.

Despite room for growth, the Longhorns played well in spurts in recent losses to Houston and Iowa State. They will look to put it all together in a big game at 12 p.m. CT on CBS.

Texas comes up short in overtime vs. Houston, 76-72

The recurring theme of the Texas basketball season following a close Houston loss is “too little, too late.”

Texas gave a valiant effort against the Houston Cougars on Monday night. Like too many times in the young season, the Longhorns came up just short.

Houston built a sizable lead early on in the game. The Cougars led by as many as 12 points in the first half and held a 41-30 lead early in the second half before the Longhorns battled their way back into the game.

After falling behind by 11 points with over 18 minutes left in the second half, Texas stormed back building as much as a 54-48 lead. Houston answered back with a 9-0 run taking a lead of its own.

The Longhorns fought to the end taking the game to overtime. The Cougars outlasted them.

The recurring theme of the game for Texas was consistently falling just short of success. On too many defensive possessions, the Longhorns allowed offensive rebounds and second opportunities. On too many offensive possessions, the team settled for bad shots that missed.

In the grand scheme of the season, the Houston game isn’t going to be what prevents Texas from reaching its goals. Nevertheless, early losses to West Virginia and UCF made this game of added importance. The Longhorns simply couldn’t get it done.

Point guard and top scorer Max Abmas led Texas with 20 points on the game. Starting forward Dillon Mitchell added 16 points followed by fellow forward Dylan Disu’s 14-point game.

The Longhorns will next travel to Fort Worth to face No. 25 TCU. They fall to 14-7 on the season.
