Browns Injury Update: Hjalte Froholdt likely to start as Wyatt Teller remains ‘doubtful’

After stepping in for Wyatt Teller in the first quarter against the Patriots, Hjalte Frojoldt will likely start against the Ravens

Starting right guard Wyatt Teller is ‘doubtful’ to play against the Baltimore Ravens, per head coach Kevin Stefanski. After leaving the game in the first quarter against the New England Patriots, Teller was seen in a walking boot today on his left calf.

After he left the game, former fourth round pick Hjalte Froholdt stepped in at right guard and did so in a valiant manner. Froholdt graded out well according to PFF, and it showed on the all-22 as well.

The depth in the offensive line room continues to be a massive selling point of this Cleveland team and of position coach Bill Callahan. With a next-man-up mentality, the Browns will need Froholdt to step in the way that James Hudson and Ethan Pocic already have this season.

Upon Further Review: What stood out in all-22 of Browns vs. Patriots?

After a second look using all-22, what stood out the most in this game between the Browns and Patriots?

There is no other way to state it other than the Cleveland Browns got outclassed by the New England Patriots on Sunday. It was ugly on broadcast view, and it was ugly when viewing the coach’s film as well.

However, the tape will not break down itself, so somebody has to do it. Before we turn the page completely to the Baltimore Ravens as the first of a two-game stretch against AFC North foes, we take one last look at the all-22 from the Browns’ loss to the Patriots.

Here are five aspects of the game that stood out upon further review.

Browns sign 8 players to future/reserves contracts

The Cleveland Browns sign 8 practice squad players to future/reserves contracts

One of the first orders of business for NFL teams in the offseason is to handle the players who ended the season on the practice squad. Those players are not technically under contract to the team any longer.

For the practice squad players or street free agents the Cleveland Browns and other teams wish to keep around to at least start the 2022 offseason, they can sign reserve/future contracts. They are effectively commitments by the team to bring the players back with a chance to compete for spots in the coming season.

Cleveland signed eight of those to reserve/future contracts on Monday:

CB Nate Meadors

OG David Moore

FB Johnny Stanton

OT Alex Taylor

DE Curtis Weaver

All will be welcomed back to Cleveland once the offseason activities kick off later this winter.

Browns sign OT Hjalte Froholdt from the Texans practice squad, place Nick Harris on I.R.

Nick Harris heads to injured reserve and the Browns sign Hjalte Froholdt to replace him on the active roster. Elijah Lee was also released:

The Cleveland Browns have added another offensive lineman to the mix. The Browns signed Hjalte Froholdt from the Houston Texans practice squad.

Froholdt takes the place of reserve center Nick Harris, who is headed to the injured reserve list with a hamstring injury. Harris has played exclusively on special teams in the first four games, accruing 16 total snaps.

Froholdt was a fourth-round pick by the New England Patriots out of Arkansas. He is a native of Denmark. Froholdt primarily plays guard, seeing time at both left and right guard in 2020 for the Patriots.

The Texans claimed Froholdt off waivers from New England last November. The 6-foot-5, 310-pound Dane did not make the Texans final roster after the preseason and spent the first four weeks on Houston’s practice squad.

The Browns also released linebacker Elijah Lee with no corresponding move.

 

Texans claim CB Mark Fields off waivers, place G Hjalte Froholdt on COVID-19 reserve

The Houston Texans made a couple of roster moves as they get ready to take on the Indianapolis Colts in Week 15.

The Houston Texans made a couple of roster moves as they gear up for their Week 15 encounter with the Indianapolis Colts Sunday at 12:00 p.m. CT at Lucas Oil Stadium.

Their first was to claim cornerback Mark Fields off waivers from the Minnesota Vikings. Houston then placed him on the exempt/commissioner permission list.

Fields went undrafted in 2019 from Clemson and caught on with the Kansas City Chiefs. Kansas City then traded Fields to the Vikings at the end of preseason for a 2021 seventh-round pick. Fields collected a tackle in three career games with the Vikings.

Houston also placed guard Hjalte Froholdt on COVID-19 reserve. The former Arkansas Razorback has not practiced for the past two days.

The Patriots lose their starting RT, and the offensive line is enormously depleted

The Patriots’ already-depleted line just lost some more depth.

Heading into their Week 6 matchup against the Denver Broncos, the New England Patriots’ offensive line was already extremely depleted.

Isaiah Wynn was shifted to left guard and sixth-round rookie Justin Herron slid out to the left tackle position. Joe Thuney got the start at center, while Michael Onwenu shifted to right guard and Jermaine Eluemunor started at right tackle. David Andrews is injured, Shaq Mason was placed on the reserve/COVID-19 list and it left the team shorthanded.

During the second quarter against Denver, Eluemunor noticeably screamed as he went down with an apparent ankle injury. The Patriots put 2019 fourth-rounder Hjalte Froholdt on the field in place of him.

The New England Patriots will be without starting center David Andrews, a former Georgia Bulldog, following his thumb surgery.

The New England Patriots will be without a key offensive lineman this Sunday as they face the Las Vegas Raiders at home in Foxborough, Massachusetts. Starting center David Andrews, a former Georgia Bulldog, is listed as out ahead the game.

New England, which is 1-1, nearly pulled off an improbable comeback against the Seattle Seahawks last week. Their comeback effort was partially due to their offensive line, who played excellent in defeat.

In fact, Cam Newton was sacked only once in 44 pass attempts at Seattle. The Patriot line consistently gave Newton time to throw deep despite being in numerous obvious passing situations.

The Raiders don’t feature a particularly intimidating pass rusher either. Las Vegas only has one sack on the season.

David Andrews, per Fox’s Jay Glazer, has a broken thumb and has had surgery to correct the issue. He broke his thumb on his snapping hand, so he’ll have to either learn to snap with the other hand or sit out several more contests.

Andrews missed the 2019 season with blood clots in his lungs. He may look to return following New England’s bye week, which is Oct. 19. Andrews helps New England’s offensive line stay cohesive as a unit, so his presence will be missed this week and possibly next week against Kansas City.

Former Arkansas Razorback Hjalte Froholdt is the Patriots’  backup center.

Report: David Andrews broke his right thumb, had surgery on it this week

The Patriots’ may have temporarily lost a huge component within their offense.

New England Patriots center David Andrews broke his right thumb and had surgery on it this week, according to FOX Sports’ Jay Glazer. Andrews tried to snap with his other hand, but he’s likely out this week and potentially longer.

Andrews is in his sixth year with the Patriots, but he missed the entirety of last season due to blood clots. He’s been a model of consistency outside of the 2019 season and this injury hurts New England’s offense going forward. Fortunately for Cam Newton and the offense, the rest of the line is in good shape at the moment.

The Patriots will likely insert 2019 fourth-round pick Hjalte Froholdt into the lineup, which could suffice. Froholdt missed 2019 with a season-ending injury, but Belichick gave a glowing review of the guard during his press conference on Friday.

“Hjalte’s had a good offseason. He had an opportunity to get a lot of reps last year in training camp but then that was really about it for him,” Belichick said. “He was rehabbed early and was really ready by January, February to get a good full offseason in in terms of training and so forth even though we weren’t able to do it (at Gillette Stadium). He’s a hard-working kid who did a lot on his own. So he had a good offseason in terms of training and being healthy. He’s been able to be out on the field every day and work hard and continue to get better on a daily basis since we’ve had the opportunity to begin practicing.

“So he’s way ahead of where he was last year on a number of levels and still a young player that has a lot of room to grow. Works very hard at it. He’s taken a step to being close to playing and hopefully he’ll be able to compete for playing time here as he continues to improve.”

Why these 2 offensive linemen are breakout candidates

The second year offensive lineman are making strides during this training camp.

As the New England Patriots continue training camp, second year offensive lineman Hjalte Froholdt and Yodny Cajuste look to break through this year.

Cajuste was drafted in the third round of last year’s draft, while Froholdt was drafted in the fourth round.

Both linemen’s 2019 seasons were marred by injuries. As a result, they never really got a chance to prove themselves  However, it appears that they are on the upswing, as the Patriots look to get more depth on the line. Speaking to the media on Friday, head coach Bill Belichick was impressed with the way they are progressing over the course of this training camp.

“Specifically on the offensive line, Yodny is again, a guy who hasn’t played a lot of football, just his background and so forth. So he’s learned an awful lot. He’s a very smart kid and he’s got good physical talent. He’s strong, he’s explosive, he can run well, he can do a lot of different things. It’s really about refinement and technique and anticipation and things like that. He’s taken a big jump there. Yodny obviously missed the whole year last year, even missed more time than Froholdt did. But he’s a guy that has a lot of experience playing the position that he’s played in college.”

With a new quarterback under center, the Patriots offensive line may have their work cut out for them. For that reason, these two could be an important aspect this year.
