Panthers DE Henry Anderson designated to return from NFI list

The Panthers have designated DE Henry Anderson to return from the NFI list.

Just two games behind the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in what’s been an absolutely absurd NFC South race, the Carolina Panthers will need all the help they can get. And they might be getting some on defense soon.

On Wednesday, the team announced that defensive lineman Henry Anderson has been designated to return from the reserve/non-injury list. He will now, similarly to when a player is designated to return from injured reserve, have a 21-day window to be activated to the 53-man roster.

Anderson was placed on the shelf following Carolina’s dominant Week 7 win over Tampa Bay. The eighth-year veteran was ruled out prior to the contest due to an illness.

In the six games he has played this season, Anderson has served primarily as a reliable run-stopper in the trenches. He’s recorded 12 tackles, five pressures, one quarterback hit, six stops and a run defense grade of 67.5 from Pro Football Focus.

Panthers place DE Henry Anderson on NFI, sign three players

The Panthers announced a handful of moves on Tuesday, one of which landed DE Henry Anderson on NFI.

On Tuesday, the Carolina Panthers announced that they’ve placed defensive end Henry Anderson on the reserve/non-football injury or illness list. He will now, similarly to injured reserve, miss at least the next four weeks.

Anderson signed on with the Panthers back on Sept. 5, a move that prompted the surprising release of 2021 draft pick and fellow defensive lineman Daviyon Nixon. Through six games in 2022, he has recorded 12 combined tackles (two for a loss) and one quarterback hit.

The eighth-year defender, who was listed with an illness on Sunday, did not play in the Week 7 win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Carolina also announced a pair of signings in cornerback Tae Hayes and offensive lineman Larnel Coleman.

Hayes, a summer standout, stuck on into the regular season as a member of the team’s practice squad. He has been called up over the last two weeks with injuries to Jaycee Horn, Donte Jackson and CJ Henderson.

Coleman, whose signing was first reported yesterday by Aaron Wilson of Pro Football Network, will join the 53-man roster from the Miami Dolphins’ practice squad.

Additionally, defensive tackle Phil Hoskins, who was waived on Saturday, will fill Hayes’ vacated spot on Carolina’s practice squad.

WATCH: Panthers DE Henry Anderson blocks Saints’ 30-yard FG try

Henry Anderson helped preserve a 13-0 lead at the break for the Panthers, blocking a 30-yard FG try by Saints K Wil Lutz.

At 0-2 while riding a league-worst nine-game losing streak, the Carolina Panthers desperately needed some juice to start their Week 3 matchup against the visiting New Orleans Saints. Luckily, the thirst has been quenched.

Up 13-0 with 42 seconds remaining in the first half, the Panthers set up to defend a 30-yard field goal attempt from Saints kicker Wil Lutz. And, boy, was it ever defended—as defensive end Henry Anderson blocked the try to preserve the lead into the break.

In addition to the winless skid, the Panthers also came into Sunday without a takeaway in their previous five games. That was snapped in the first quarter by linebacker Frankie Luvu and defensive end Marquis Haynes Sr.—who, respectively, stripped and scooped up a fumble from New Orleans running back Alvin Kamara.

After Luvu ripped the ball out, Haynes Sr. picked the pigskin up for a 44-yard touchdown return. Carolina held the New Orleans offense to 162 yards and just five first downs in the half.

Will new Panthers DE Henry Anderson debut in Week 1 vs. Browns?

On Thursday, Panthers DC Phil Snow gave a bit of insight into how he plans on using new DE Henry Anderson.

Henry Anderson may not be pulling off a 2021 Cam Newton type of feat, but his team debut could come a lot sooner than expected. In fact, it could come just six days after he joined the squad.

Defensive coordinator Phil Snow spoke with reporters prior to Thursday’s practice. Right off the top, he was asked by Joseph Person of The Athletic about how he plans on using the newly-signed defensive end.

“Our ends, we’re playing a little differently at times than we did a year ago,” Snow said. “Yetur’s [Gross-Matos] a lot bigger man than Haason Reddick, right? We brought in Henry to help us with that position. So you’ll see him over at tight end, dominate the tight end and the run game and those type things. So that’s how we’ll use him. He’ll help us in the run game.”

Anderson was scooped up by the Panthers this past Monday. The eighth-year defender was placed on the injured reserve and released by the New England Patriots back on Aug. 30.

Person then followed up by asking Snow if Anderson could be involved this Sunday against the Cleveland Browns. And he didn’t say no . . .

“He could be,” Snow replied. “It depends on how the game goes and the flow of the game.”

Given Cleveland’s talented running backs, as well as a rainy forecast, this game could lean towards a rush-heavy approach. If that’s the case, Anderson may have his number called to help stop the Browns’ two-headed monster of Nick Chubb and Kareem Hunt.

Why did Panthers waive DT Daviyon Nixon?

To create room for DE Henry Anderson, the Panthers made a surprise move and waived 2021 fifth-round pick Daviyon Nixon. Here’s why they did it:

The Carolina Panthers’ decision to add some more help on its defensive line wasn’t the big surprise on Monday. It was what came as a result of the move that really raised some eyebrows.

In signing defensive end Henry Anderson early this afternoon, the team cut ties with Daviyon Nixon. Not only was the third-year defensive tackle a promising talent, possessing the athleticism to play both inside and out, but he was also a pretty recent investment—a fifth-round pick from last year’s draft.

So why was Nixon the casualty? Head coach Matt Rhule explained a bit of the team’s reasoning a few hours after the cut went down.

“These things are tough,” he said. “You have to make tough decisions. Daviyon’s, obviously, a person we drafted. Had a tough injury last year, coming into this year. But we couldn’t go into the year with that many d-linemen. We’ve been happy with [Marquan] McCall and [Phil] Hoskins. So that was the decision we had to make.”

McCall, an undrafted rookie, was one of the team’s top standouts from summer action. And Hoskins, who was selected two rounds after Nixon, has also stuck on as a staff favorite.

Additionally, FOX Charlotte’s Will Kunkel had a beat on the move. He’d later report that the Panthers didn’t exactly see Nixon as a pro-level player.

Nixon appeared in seven games last season. He registered nine tackles, two quarterback hits and half a sack.

Panthers sign DE Henry Anderson

The Panthers rearranged their defensive line depth Monday, signing veteran DE Harry Anderson and releasing second-year DT Daviyon Nixon.

The Carolina Panthers rearranged their defensive line depth Monday, signing veteran defensive end Henry Anderson and releasing second-year defensive tackle Daviyon Nixon.

Anderson, 6-foot-6 and 301 pounds, contributed as a run stopper for six seasons with the Indianapolis Colts and New York Jets. He totaled 167 combined tackles and 44 quarterback hits.

He then spent most of last season on the New England Patriots Patriots’ injured reserve list after tearing his pectoral muscle in Week 4. Unfortunately, that wasn’t his only recent battle with injury.

Late last month, Anderson was the recipient of a nasty hit from former Panthers safety Kenny Robinson during the teams’ joint practices. During 53-man roster cuts, Robinson was waived, signed to the practice squad and cut from the practice squad because of his role in two fights during those practices.

To make room for Anderson, the Panthers released Nixon, who showed flashes of promise before sustaining a season-ending injury last season. Nixon, a former Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year, suffered a knee injury in practice last October, causing him to land on injured reserve. The former fifth-round draft pick should attract some interest from teams looking to bolster the interior of their defensive line.

DL Henry Anderson cut by Patriots after injury settlement

Patriots release Henry Anderson from IR.

Defensive lineman Henry Anderson was released from injured reserve after reaching an injury settlement with the New England Patriots.

The team announced the news on Thursday.

Anderson wouldn’t have been able to return to play for the Patriots this season due to being placed on IR ahead of the 53-man roster cut. So the 31-year-old defensive veteran was looking at a long layoff if the two sides didn’t reach a settlement.

Now, he is free to sign elsewhere and work towards contributing for another team.

The Patriots are seemingly undergoing a shift in mentality with their being a youth movement on the defensive side of the ball. Coach Bill Belichick has clearly made a conscientious effort to rely on younger and more athletic defensive players up front and in the backfield.

Along with releasing Anderson from IR, the team also officially moved rookie Tyquan Thornton to IR and signed former college standout Lynn Bowden Jr. to the practice squad in what has been a busy day in Foxborough.

Patriots place DL Henry Anderson and WR Kristian Wilkerson on IR

The Patriots are placing Anderson and Wilkerson on IR.

The New England Patriots are placing both defensive lineman Henry Anderson and wide receiver Kristian Wilkerson on injured reserve, which effectively ends both of their seasons.

ESPN’s Field Yates reported the news on Tuesday.

The only chance of either player returning would be the Patriots releasing them with injury settlements to potentially sign with another team. A similar agreement was reached with cornerback Malcolm Butler last week.

Anderson, 31, got left in the wind by some of the younger players along the defensive front. It was an uphill battle from day one, and he never caught on with the unit.

Wilkerson, on the other hand, looked to be on track for a strong preseason after leading the Patriots in receiving with eight receptions for 99 yards in the opener against the New York Giants.

Unfortunately, he was the victim of a nasty hit by defensive back Kenny Robinson during a joint practice session with the Carolina Panthers. The hit set the stage for a disturbing brawl that broke out between the two teams and spilled into the stands.

Wilkerson was diagnosed with a concussion and has been sidelined ever since.

The IR moves, along with defensive tackle Daniel Ekuale being put on reserve/NFL suspension for two games, do not count against the Patriots’ 53-man roster.

Patriots free up cap space by restructuring Henry Anderson’s contract

The Patriots reportedly free up over $1 million in cap space.

The New England Patriots continue to clear up cap space this offseason.

The Patriots and defensive end Henry Anderson have come to agreement on a reworked contract, giving him a base salary of $1.25 million in 2022. Anderson’s original contract was $2.5 million and it gives the Patriots $1.25 million to work with this offseason.

There are incentives that could get Anderson back up to $2.5 million, but they won’t count against the cap just yet. If he were to hit the incentives, they would go against the cap in 2023. He originally signed with the Patriots on a two-year, $7 million deal last offseason. He then suffered a pectoral injury in Week 4 and missed the remainder of the year.

New England made other moves by releasing Kyle Van Noy and trading Shaq Mason in order to clear up cap space. A lot of the money has went to re-signing free agents and keeping the veteran leadership on the team.
