UFC vet Robelis Despaigne honored to share GFL team with Yoel Romero, Hector Lombard

UFC veteran Robelis Despaigne reacts to getting drafted by GFL’s Team Miami alongside with Cuban’s Yoel Romero and Hector Lombard.

MIAMI – GFL’s Miami team features a lot of Cuban power, and [autotag]Robelis Despaigne[/autotag] is over the moon that he forms part of it.

GFL, the newly launched team-based MMA promotion that’s expected to begin in April 2025, had its official draft this past Friday. The Miami team landed decorated veterans [autotag]Yoel Romero[/autotag] and [autotag]Hector Lombard[/autotag].

Despaigne, a fellow Cuban, feels honored to share the team with his countrymen, who he’s long looked up to in MMA.

“I was very happy to be on the same team and on the same level with fighters such as Yoel Romero and Hector Lombard, who are legends of Cuba,” Despaigne told Hablemos MMA in Spanish. “I can only imagine when we get to fight at an event, the three of us sharing and being together. That’s beautiful. ”

Despaigne entered the UFC in 2024 and won his debut with an 18-second KO. However, he lost his two subsequent fights by decision and was cut from the promotion before the year’s end. Since then, he’s competed twice under the Karate Combat banner and, as expected, has picked up two quick knockout victories.

Despaigne is enjoying this Karate Combat chapter of his career, and wants to take it even further. Yet, MMA is still his main goal.

“You always look to be on the biggest stages,” Despaigne said. “I do like a lot Karate Combat, and I want to win the title in Karate Combat, but the dream has always been to be in the UFC. I already accomplished that, but I want to return and fight MMA, and do reach everything possible that’s in reach.”

It’s not every day there’s an MMA draft, but Friday there was

The 2025 GFL Draft took place virtually with a live stream on MMA Junkie. Six teams, each representing a major city, drafted from a pool of approximately 500 fighters, including big-name free agents and rising prospects.

One-hundred-twenty athletes were be selected across 10 weight classes (heavyweight, light heavyweight, middleweight, welterweight, lightweight, featherweight, bantamweight, women’s bantamweight, women’s strawweight, and women’s atomweight). However, the weight classes are divided slightly differently than the traditional weight classes. The promotion says it’s an effort to combat weight cutting.

The six teams are managed and coached by MMA notables, as follows: Dubai (manager Cain Velasquez and coach Javier Mendez); London (manager Luke Barnatt and coach Carl Prince); Los Angeles (manager Wanderlei Silva and coach Rafael Cordeiro); Miami (manager Thiago Alves and coach Conan Silveira); New York (manager TBA and coach Ray Longo); and Sao Paulo (manager Lyoto Machida and coach Andre Pederneiras.

While a specific date has yet to be revealed, the promotion says it will launch in April with regular season, semi-finals, and finals events held throughout the year.

Global Fight League announces launch, roster includes giant list of former UFC fighters

GFL has arrived – and it’s bringing fairly massive names from UFC yesteryears with it.

A new player has entered the MMA landscape, and it has arrived with some big names.

Wednesday, Global Fight League (GFL) announced its official launch will come in the opening weeks of 2025. The GFL concept differs from that of UFC and PFL.

While it has a league format and playoffs, it is also team-based and has a draft. There will be six franchises (names and cities to follow). The draft is scheduled for Jan. 24, with an inaugural event to follow in April.

Who’s fighting?

Co-founder Darren Owen revealed on “The Ariel Helwani Show” on Wednesday that the promotion has over 300 fighters under contract. Not all fighters will be drafted.

Of the 92 fighters posted to the promotion’s official website, 45 of them are former UFC fighters. Names include Tyron Woodley, Anthony Pettis, Benson Henderson, Gegard Mousasi, Wanderlei Silva, Frank Mir, Andrei Arlovski, Kevin Lee, Fabricio Werdum, and Junior Dos Santos among others.

What does GFL provide athletes that other promotions don’t?

According to Owen, GFL offers fighters a 50-50 split in revenue sharing. Additionally, the promotion provides comprehensive support for training and medical bills, retirement benefits, insurance coverage, and more.

Who is behind GFL and where is the money coming from?

Owen is listed as the co-founder and commissioner for GFL and serves essentially as the public face for the promotion. He served as COO of PFL vs. October 2015 to May 2020 and was the founder and CEO of World Series of Fighting Canada, according to his LinkedIn page.

Also listed on the promotion’s website are Arun Parimi (co-founder and COO), Scott Parker (CMO), and Jeffrey Pollack (senior advisor).

Owen declined to identify the source of the funds behind the operation, but did say it’s a silicon valley investor.

How does the regular season work?

Similarly to PFL, GFL has a point system for regular season fights.

A finish victory notches a fighter’s team four points. A decision win earns three points. A draw earns two points. A decision loss earns one point. If a fighter loses by finish, he or she walks away with zero points.

Gamebred Bareknuckle MMA 6 took place Friday and you can watch a replay of the event on MMA Junkie.

The bareknuckle MMA event took place at Mississippi Coast Coliseum in Biloxi, Miss., and featured multiple UFC veterans, including the headlining matchup.

Former UFC heavyweights [autotag]Alan Belcher[/autotag] and [autotag]Roy Nelson[/autotag] clashed in the main event. It was a hard-fought three-round affair in which both fighters had their moments. The judges were ultimately split in their decision, crowning Belcher the winner by dueling 29-28 scores.

Belcher brought more gloveless fighting experience with four bareknuckle boxing fights while Nelson previously competed in bareknuckle MMA once.

The co-feature saw another pair of UFC veterans throw down without gloves as featherweights [autotag]Randy Costa[/autotag] and [autotag]Jason Knight[/autotag] met. Costa made quick work of Knight with a violent first round knockout.

Gamebred Bareknuckle MMA video: Hector Lombard intially DQ’d as opponent tapped, later overturned

A confusing situation surrounded Hector Lombard’s first round finish at Gamebred Bareknuckle MMA 6 in Mississippi.

(Editor’s note: This story was revised at 11:55 p.m. ET after Lombard’s disqualification was confirmed to be overturned.) 

A confusing situation unfolded in the main card opening bout at Gamebred Bareknuckle MMA 6 involving UFC veteran [autotag]Hector Lombard[/autotag], who appeared to score an easy stoppage victory.

The former Bellator champion and UFC middleweight competed in bareknuckle MMA against experienced bareknuckler Chris Sarro at Mississippi Coast Coliseum in Biloxi, Miss. Lombard took down Sarro without much resistance in the first round, and began going to work on the ground.

Sarro gave up his back and Lombard began raining down punches to the head. Sarro, who was face-down on the canvas, covered up as best he could, and after a few punches landed, began to tap. Lombard signaled to the referee that Sarro was tapping from the punches. Two more punches from Lombard landed before the referee stepped in.

When Lombard got up, he appeared upset that the referee did not notice his opponent tapping out. What appeared to be a submission due to strikes, ended up not being the case when the official announcement was read. Lombard was announced as disqualified due to illegal strikes to the back of the head at 1:09 of Round 1.

Lombard and others inside the cage seemed confused at the result. However, Lombard did not appear upset, but rather more concerned for Sarro, who needed to be stretchered out of the cage.

Shortly after the conclusion of the bout, Lombard received good news that the result was reversed in his favor to a submission victory.

Lombard nearly had two consecutive MMA bouts end due to illegal strikes. In his last MMA appearance (with gloves) at Eagle FC 47 in May 2022, Lombard’s fight against former teammate Thiago Silva was ruled a no contest. Silva landed an illegal knee in the second round to the head of Lombard who was downed.

A dozen UFC alumni have been booked for Jorge Masvidal’s Gamebred Bareknuckle MMA in Mississippi.

[autotag]Jorge Masvidal[/autotag]’s Gamebred Bareknuckle MMA is still in its infancy, but the former UFC star continues to attach notoriety to his budding promotion by bringing in notable names.

The next installment of Gambred Bareknuckle MMA takes place Friday, Nov. 10 at Mississippi Coast Coliseum in Biloxi, Miss. and features a dozen (and counting) former UFC fighters, including a former headliner, a “TUF” winner, and more.

Should the promotion keep with the rhythm of its past events, the card will stream live and free on YouTube.
