12 former UFC fighters added to Jorge Masvidal’s Gambred Bareknuckle MMA event

A dozen UFC alumni have been booked for Jorge Masvidal’s Gamebred Bareknuckle MMA in Mississippi.

[autotag]Jorge Masvidal[/autotag]’s Gamebred Bareknuckle MMA is still in its infancy, but the former UFC star continues to attach notoriety to his budding promotion by bringing in notable names.

The next installment of Gambred Bareknuckle MMA takes place Friday, Nov. 10 at Mississippi Coast Coliseum in Biloxi, Miss. and features a dozen (and counting) former UFC fighters, including a former headliner, a “TUF” winner, and more.

Should the promotion keep with the rhythm of its past events, the card will stream live and free on YouTube.

Below, check out which UFC notables of yesteryear are competing on the card:

UFC alums Roy Nelson, Alan Belcher to fight for Gamebred Bareknuckle MMA heavyweight title

According to Jorge Masvidal, the winner of Junior Dos Santos vs. Fabricio Werdum will face the winner of Roy Nelson vs. Alan Belcher.

Two days out from a bareknuckle battle between former UFC heavyweight champions [autotag]Junior Dos Santos[/autotag] and [autotag]Fabricio Werdum[/autotag], Gamebred Boxing promoter Jorge Masvidal has announced elevated stakes.

Dos Santos and Werdum will meet in a gloveless MMA fight Friday at VyStar Veterans Memorial Arena in Jacksonville, Fla. The winner, Masvidal revealed at a news conference Wednesday, will face the winner of another heavyweight bareknuckle MMA fight, [autotag]Alan Belcher[/autotag] vs. [autotag]Roy Nelson[/autotag], freshly minted for an Oct. 28 show at Mississippi Coast Coliseum in Biloxi, Miss.

Nelson vs. Belcher will be for the promotion’s heavyweight title. No other fights have been announced for the Oct. 28 event at this time.

“The winner of that will face the winner of this sometime in January, we’re hopeful,” Masvidal said. “Hard Rock Stadium. Hard Rock Casino. We’ll keep these guys busy, just as we promised them. That’s f*cking huge news. We’re excited.”

Masvidal also revealed plans to hold an event in December.

Nelson headlined a Gamebred Bareknuckle MMA event in May when he knocked out bareknuckle boxing standout Dillon Cleckler in Round 1. The competition was Nelson’s first since his Bellator departure in late 2020. Nelson competed in the UFC from 2010-2017 and compiled a 9-10 promotional record.

In joining Gamebred Bareknuckle MMA, Belcher has departed BKFC, a promotion he was a part of since 2021. Belcher competed in the UFC from 2006-2013 and compiled a 9-6 promotional record, largely at middleweight. After eight years away from competition, Belcher returned as a heavyweight and has yet to lose. Belcher was 4-0 under the BKFC banner while also competing outside the promotion in traditional boxing where he won five pro bout and one exhibition.

Video: Roy Nelson crushes Dillon Cleckler with vintage KO sequence for Gamebred Bareknuckle MMA

At Gamebred Bareknuckle MMA, Roy Nelson folded opponent Dillon Cleckler after walking through a series of massive punches.

[autotag]Roy Nelson[/autotag] hasn’t competed much in recent years, but it doesn’t mean he’s done quite yet.

In what he deemed a bucket list item, Nelson returned to competition without gloves Friday at Jorge Masvidal’s Gamebred Bareknuckle MMA in Sunrise, Fla. In vintage “Big Country” fashion, Nelson walked through massive punches from bulky opponent [autotag]Dillon Cleckler[/autotag] before he scored a knockout at 3:24 of Round 1.

Nelson, 46, hadn’t competed since his final Bellator fight in August 2020. The victory was his first combat sports win since September 2017.

After the fight, Nelson indicated he will continue to compete as long as the opportunities excite him. Masvidal brought Alex Nicholson in the cage after the fight to size up with Nelson and also mentioned Junior Dos Santos and Fabricio Werdum as potential next opponents.

Ahead of ‘spontaneous’ Gamebred Bareknuckle MMA fight, Roy Nelson laments one that got away

Roy Nelson hasn’t been in a fight in nearly three years, but Friday gets to cross one off his bucket list.

[autotag]Roy Nelson[/autotag] hasn’t been in a fight in nearly three years, but Friday gets to cross one off his bucket list.

Nelson will make his bareknuckle debut with a matchup against Dillon Cleckler under Jorge Masvidal’s promotional banner at Gamebred Fighting Championship 4 in Sunrise, Fla. The bout will be MMA rules, but bareknuckle.

Nelson most recently fought for Bellator, but has been inactive since a decision loss to Valentin Moldavsky at Bellator 244 in August 2020. He said he was interested in a bareknuckle boxing matchup when the bareknuckle MMA spot opened up.

“This is actually just really spontaneous,” Nelson told MMA Junkie. “I was talking to my wife. We were talking about bucket list stuff, and I reached out to Jorge because they just had the boxing match and I just wanted to get a boxing match in. Then this came up, and this is like another thing on the bucket list. So I’m like, ‘Ahh, let’s go after it.’

“I never officially retired because once I retire, I’m one of those fighters: I’m retired. … I’ve been focusing on a whole bunch of other business stuff, because there is a life after fighting.”

Nelson, the Season 10 winner of “The Ultimate Fighter,” fought in the UFC from 2009 until 2017, when he moved to Bellator. He won his first fight in the promotion, but then had a five-fight skid. And while he didn’t officially retire, the presumption by many has been that he was done fighting.

Nelson said he tried to work with Bellator to get a bout with a legend, though.

“One of my bucket list (items), I’d been talking to (Bellator president) Scott Coker for the last two years (about) the Fedor (Emelianenko) fight,” Nelson said. “He kept on (saying), ‘Yeah, we’ll see. We’ll see. I’ll talk to Fedor. All right. Yeah, we’ll see.’ And then out of left field, (he fights) Ryan Bader. Huh? Yeah – that’s the game. They stick it to you.”

So with that not on the table, Nelson, who went 23-18 in his MMA career, Nelson turned to the bucket list.

“I’ve never done any bareknuckle except in a street fight,” he said. “But usually those don’t go very well and they’re very fast because there’s usually concrete next to you. I think without the gloves, I think it’s just literally man vs. man, as long as the ref doesn’t get involved.”

The 41-year-old Cleckler had a 10-fight MMA career under the Island Fights banner and went 9-1. He’s been boxing for BKFC since 2020 and fought in April for Masvidal’s Gamebred FC.

Valentin Moldavsky ‘had to sacrifice excitement’ to avoid Roy Nelson’s power at Bellator 244

Valentin Moldavsky admitted he had to be cautious to avoid Roy Nelson’s famed haymakers in his Bellator 244 victory in Uncasville.

UNCASVILLE, Conn. – [autotag]Valentin Moldavsky[/autotag] knew the dangers involved in facing a hard-hitter like [autotag]Roy Nelson[/autotag] and wasn’t going to take any chances.

Moldavsky (10-1 MMA, 5-0 BMMA) outpointed former UFC heavyweight and “The Ultimate Fighter” Season 10 winner Nelson 30-27 across the board at Bellator 244 on Friday as he notched his fifth win in a row.

After his victory, Moldavsky acknowledged that it wasn’t the most entertaining battle. But, with Nelson’s infamous overhand right a constant threat, he explained that he didn’t want to expose himself to being knocked out in a fight he felt he was controlling.

“I was a little bit more cautious than usual because he has a very unorthodox overhand right,” Moldavsky told reporters, including MMA Junkie, at the post-fight news conference. “I obviously didn’t want to get caught, so I had to sacrifice the excitement of the fight in view of winning it, but I got it done.”

He continued, “I felt like I could have done more in the standup, and I would interrupt my own sequences because a lot of times Roy would cover up and take a lot of punches then throw that one punch. And, in the heavyweight division, that lucky punch could end it, so I would unload with my hands then (I) would clinch him, just to kinda break that sequence so he doesn’t tie me and hit me. I just wanted to be cautious.”

Check out Valentin Moldavsky’s full Bellator 244 post-fight news conference in the video above.

Bellator 244 took place Friday at Mohegan Sun Arena. The main card simulcasted on Paramount Network and DAZN after prelims on MMA Junkie.

Bellator 244 results: Valentin Moldavsky outworks Roy Nelson in dominant decision win

Valentin Moldavsky hands Roy Nelson his fifth consecutive defeat.

[autotag]Valentin Moldavsky[/autotag] added a big name to his record.

The Russian heavyweight picked up a dominant decision win over seasoned veteran [autotag]Roy Nelson[/autotag] in the main card of Friday’s Bellator 244. The event went down at the Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Conn. and streamed on DAZN.

Moldavsky (10-1 MMA, 5-0 BMMA) defeated Nelson (23-19 MMA, 1-5 BMMA) 30-27 on all three judges’ scorecards.

[lawrence-related id=546727,546706]

The bout was a one-sided affair. In all three rounds, Moldavsky used his speed and movement, being the lighter fighter, to circle in the outside and land shots while avoiding Nelson’s power punches.

Moldavsky also proved to be better in the clinch, as both fighters locked up at multiple times. The 28-year-old controlled Nelson while landing many shots from close quarters.

Moldavsky is on a five-fight wining streak and remains unbeaten inside the Bellator cage. The combat sambo world champion’s lone loss was a split decision to Amir Aliakbari in RIZIN back in 2016.

Meanwhile, Nelson is now a five-fight losing streak. He’s also 3-10 in his past 13 bouts. Nelson’s last win was in 2017 against Javy Ayala at Bellator 183.

According to MMA Junkie’s Nolan King, Nelson asked Bellator president Scott Coker for one more bout before hanging up the gloves. He’d like to have a trilogy bout with Matt Mitrione.

Up-to-the-minute Bellator 244 results include:

  • Valentin Moldavsky def. Roy Nelson via unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27)
  • John Salter def. Andrew Kapel via submission (arm-triangle choke) – Round 3, 3:11

Bellator 244 takes place Friday at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Conn. The main card airs on Paramount following prelims on MMA Junkie.

(Click here to open a PDF of the staff picks grid in a separate window.)

In the main event, heavyweight and light heavyweight champion [autotag]Ryan Bader[/autotag] (27-5 MMA, 5-0 BMMA) puts his 205-pound title up against challenger [autotag]Vadim Nemkov[/autotag] (12-2 MMA, 4-0 BMMA). Bader only is around a -150 favorite at the sports books, but all but one of our 14 editors, writers, videographers and radio hosts are picking him to stay champ-champ.

In the co-main event, former women’s featherweight champion [autotag]Julia Budd[/autotag] (13-3 MMA, 7-1 BMMA) for the first time since losing her belt to Cris Cyborg and takes on [autotag]Jessy Miele[/autotag] (9-3 MMA, 1-0 BMMA). Budd is a 7-1 favorite and has a 13-1 lead in the picks.

Also on the main card, [autotag]Valentin Moldavsky[/autotag] (9-1 MMA, 4-0 BMMA) is the event’s biggest favorite at more than 9-1 against [autotag]Roy Nelson[/autotag] (23-18 MMA, 1-4 BMMA). But three of our 14 picker are taking Nelson to pull off a big upset.

And to open the main card, [autotag]Andrew Kapel[/autotag] (15-6 MMA, 1-0 BMMA) is an underdog to -250 favorite [autotag]John Salter[/autotag] (17-4 MMA, 7-1 BMMA) in their middleweight bout, but he’s got two of our 14 pickers taking him in an upset.

In the MMA Junkie reader consensus picks, Bader (60 percent), Budd (91 percent), Moldavsky (75 percent) and Salter (82 percent) are the choices.

Check out all the picks above.
