All of Harry Hiestand’s NFL draft picks at Notre Dame

A legend at his craft.

I’d be curious to know when talking to maybe a slightly above average fan from each Power Five college football program, how many could name their school’s offensive line coach.  I know there are passionate fans everywhere that can name the last preferred walk-on from a class that passed through a decade ago, but I’m talking the more average fans.

I’m not saying it’s better or worse but Notre Dame is clearly different.  But I suppose that’s what happens when you produce offensive linemen like the Irish have.  And you produce that number of star NFL linemen because of coaching – and having Joe Moore and Harry Hiestand for as long as the program did formed quite the haul of offensive line talent.

Hiestand announced his retirement Sunday in a press release that came out literal moments before the ball was kicked off for Super Bowl LVII.  That means he retires with nine former players at Notre Dame being drafted, a number that will certainly rise with Jarrett Patterson, Joe Alt and Blake Fisher, if not more in the next couple of years.

Here are all nine offensive lineman to play for Hiestand at Notre Dame who had their names called at the NFL draft.  He averaged more than one a season for the time he spent under the Golden Dome.

Notre Dame OL coach Harry Hiestand retires after 40 years

Harry Hiestand is regarded as an elite O-line coach. Marcus Freeman faces a big decision on his replacement at Notre Dame.

Sunday was all about the Super Bowl, as always. However, just before kickoff, 40-year football coach Harry Hiestand announced he was going to retire from coaching after a magnificent career.

Hiestand had most recently been the offensive line coach at Notre Dame under Marcus Freeman, but he is riding off into the sunset to begin a new chapter (h/t Nick Shepkowski of Fighting Irish Wire):

“I have made the decision to retire,” Hiestand wrote. “It is important to me to spend time with my family, as I have two kids competing in college athletics, one for his last season, and I have decided it is time for me to be a part of that. I am thankful for the opportunity Father Jenkins, Jack Swarbrick and especially Coach Freeman gave me to return for a seventh season coaching the offensive line at Notre Dame.”

Notre Dame also lost Tommy Rees, who became the offensive coordinator at Alabama, so now Marcus Freeman has two positions to fill with February half over.

Heistand was with Notre Dame from 2012-2017 before moving to the NFL and becoming the offensive line coach for the Chicago Bears. In 2019, he was fired from the Bears, but he returned to South Bend in 2022.

Hiestand was also a grad assistant for USC from 1997-1998.

Notre Dame football: Harry Hiestand announces immediate retirement

Never a dull moment when it comes to Notre Dame football.

Just minutes before the kickoff of Super Bowl LVII between the Philadelphia Eagles and Kansas City Chiefs, Notre Dame football sent out the following press release regarding offensive line coach Harry Hiestand:

SOUTH BEND, IN — Harry Hiestand, a 40-year collegiate coaching veteran who returned to Notre Dame in 2022 for a second time as the Joe Moore Offensive Line Coach, has announced his retirement from coaching.

“I have made the decision to retire,” Hiestand said. “It is important to me to spend time with my family, as I have two kids competing in college athletics, one for his last season, and I have decided it is time for me to be a part of that. I am thankful for the opportunity Father Jenkins, Jack Swarbrick and especially Coach Freeman gave me to return for a seventh season coaching the offensive line at Notre Dame.

“Coach Freeman sets the example for Notre Dame Football every day, and he brings out the best in all of us. The players, especially the offensive line, are the best part of this great job and I thank them for their hard work.”

Hiestand returned to Notre Dame for the 2022 season after spending the 2018 and 2019 seasons as the offensive line coach for the Chicago Bears. His first term with the Notre Dame football program was from 2012 through 2017.

“I want to personally thank Coach Hiestand for coming out of retirement for my first year as a head coach, and raising the standard, not only for our offensive line, but for our entire team,” Dick Corbett Head Coach Marcus Freeman said.

“We are so grateful for all of the work he has put in during his two stints here at Notre Dame. Coach Hiestand has experienced success at the highest levels of coaching and I am forever grateful for the wisdom he has shared with myself and our entire coaching staff. Coach Hiestand will be forever a part of Notre Dame Football. Congratulations to Harry, Terri and his entire family on a much deserved retirement from coaching! We wish them all of the best.”

Hiestand helped develop the 2022 team into one of the more dependable units in the country. The Irish rushed for over 200 yards six times during the 2022 season and finished 35th in the country at 189.9 yards per game. Notre Dame also protected the quarterback at a high level, surrendering just 1.62 sacks per game (40th in the country). Sophomore left tackle Joe Alt collected five first-team All-America honors from various publications when the season concluded, while left guard Jarrett Patterson was also named a Second Team All-American by the American Football Coaches Association.

The Irish rushed for 2,457 yards in 2022, which was the sixth-highest total for the program since 1996.

During his first term with the Irish, Hiestand developed a number of offensive linemen into Top-3 round NFL Draft picks. In his six years in South Bend, he had six offensive linemen selected in the first three rounds (Quenton Nelson, first; Ronnie Stanley, first; Zack Martin, first; Mike McGlinchey, first; Nick Martin, second; and Chris Watt, third). Over the 11 NFL Drafts (2002-12) prior to Hiestand’s arrival, only two Irish offensive linemen were drafted in the first three rounds and not a single one since 2007.

Of the six linemen drafted, three of them were selected in the Top-10 picks of the draft (Nelson – 5th, 2018; McGlinchey – 9th, 2018 and Stanley – 6th, 2016). Nelson was the highest drafted Notre Dame player since Rick Mirer was selected second overall by the Seattle Seahawks in the 1993 draft.

Prior to his first stint at Notre Dame, Hiestand coached at Tennessee for two years (2010-11) after working with the offensive line with the Chicago Bears from 2005-09. He coached the offensive line at Illinois from 1997-2004 and at Missouri from 1994-96.

Hiestand’s first coaching job at the FBS level occurred at Toledo, where he worked with the tight ends from 1988-89. He worked with the offensive line as a graduate assistant at USC in 1987, after coaching the tight ends at Penn in 1986.

His first assistant coach role came at Hiestand’s alma mater, East Stroudsburg. Hiestand was offensive line coach from 1984-85 and assistant offensive line coach in 1983 at the NCAA Division II school after serving as a student assistant in 1982.

Hiestand began his college career as an offensive lineman at Springfield College (Mass.) before transferring to East Stroudsburg, where injuries ended his playing career. He graduated from East Stroudsburg in 1983 with a bachelor’s degree in health and physical education.

Born Nov. 19, 1958, in Malvern, Pennsylvania, Hiestand and his wife Terri have four children – Michael, Matthew, Mark and Sarah.

Notre Dame football offers massive Pennsylvania offensive tackle

The Irish go East for the latest offer

For [autotag]Notre Dame[/autotag] football, this weekend could be a massive one. They hosted a group of prospects along with getting some offers on Friday, and one out today.

The prospect that received an offer Saturday afternoon was Pennsylvania offensive tackle [autotag]Kevin Heywood[/autotag], who is absolutely massive. The lineman stands six-foot-seven-inches while weighing 295-pounds. He is literally a gigantic prospect, and as he enters his senior year next fall, there is potential that Heywood could grow even more.

It looks like offensive line coach [autotag]Harry Hiestand[/autotag] is leading the charge, while Heywood could play on either side of the ball. The guess is that head coach [autotag]Marcus Freeman[/autotag] and the Irish are recruiting him as a tackle.

Former Notre Dame player put his recruiting hat on trying to lure Ohio offensive tackle

Will the twin’s follow in their high school alums footsteps?

It’s not just the [autotag]Notre Dame[/autotag] football staff that is working social media to help recruit for the Irish, sometimes former players get into the mix especially when the recruits are from their former high school.

That’s exactly the case with former Irish safety [autotag]Shaun Crawford[/autotag] and twins [autotag]Devontae Armstrong[/autotag] and [autotag]Deontae Armstrong[/autotag]. Each of them have an offer from Notre Dame and they currently attend [autotag]Lakewood St. Edward High School[/autotag], which is where Crawford prepped.

What spurred Crawford to put his recruiting hat on was when Deontae shared a recruiting edit of himself in Columbus, as Ohio State recently offered both of them. The former Irish player noted that South Bend isn’t far from home, and [autotag]Harry Hiestand[/autotag] would be their offensive line coach.

This most likely won’t push either Armstrong over the edge, but Crawford is an example of a St. Ed’s player having success outside of Ohio, specifically at Notre Dame.

Notre Dame star highest graded Power Five offensive lineman per PFF

Is he the best offensive lineman in college football?

Notre Dame has a long history of being referred to as “O-Line U”.  Names like [autotag]Quenton Nelson[/autotag], [autotag]Ronnie Stanley[/autotag], and [autotag]Zach Martin[/autotag] are just some of the recent stars that have gone on to successful NFL careers after dominating with the Irish.  Notre Dame offensive line coach [autotag]Harry Hiestand[/autotag] gets well-deserved praise for helping develop talent at a truly elite level but Notre Dame’s offensive line successes predate his arrival.

For all you youngsters out there, look up the name Joe Moore.  Just know that all those run-heavy teams that thrived under Lou Holtz were guided by offensive lines coached by Moore.  He’s also the man that the team award for the best offensive line in college football goes to annually.

Enough with the history lesson for now and back to regularly scheduled programming.

Pro Football Focus released their top-five graded Power Five offensive linemen in 2022 through Week 10’s games.  If you’ve watched Notre Dame’s offensive line in 2022 you won’t be surprised to see who checked out first overall.

Notre Dame offers Wisconsin commit, could a flip be coming?

The Irish spatula is getting ready

For two very consistent programs, Wisconsin and Notre Dame, the 2022 season has not gone according to plan. Both began the season with a number next to their name; each fell out of the rankings after Week 3.

For the Badgers, it’s been a very rocky road. In October, began they parted ways with their head coach Paul Chryst after eight years and a .720 winning percentage. We all know how the Irish’s season has gone. It has been a trying one, but their recruiting hasn’t suffered unlike Wisconsin. Only one Irish player has entered the portal, Jacob Lacey, while Wisconsin has seen four.

Wisconsin’s highest rated commit, offensive lineman [autotag]Christopher Terek[/autotag] might be jumping ship before he even stepped foot in Madison. The Irish made an offer to the six-foot-five-inch and 320-pound lineman recently.

After the Irish had offensive lineman [autotag]Elijah Paige[/autotag] decommit at the end of September, many wondered if [autotag]Marcus Freeman[/autotag] and offensive line coach [autotag]Harry Hiestand[/autotag] would look to replace him. It seems they have at least one prospect, Terek, in mind and appear to be trying to flip the Badgers’ top commit.

Notre Dame welcomes in 2024 Michigan lineman this weekend

The list grows

You can add another name to the list of recruits that will be in South Bend this weekend as the Irish host Stanford. Michigan 2024 offensive lineman [autotag]Andrew “AJ” Dennis[/autotag] announced via his Twitter that he will be on campus to catch the action.

The six-foot-four-inch and 255-pound lineman recently visited Miami, OH and has been in communication with Kentucky, Toledo, and Western Michigan among others. While Dennis holds just a few MAC offers, this recruitment looks like one that the Irish was keeping a close eye on. With another year of development, it seems like Irish offensive line coach  [autotag]Harry Hiestand [/autotag]wants to have a relationship built in case Dennis take big step forward in his play.

Currently, Notre Dame has six commitments in the 2024 recruiting cycle, headline by five-star Michigan quarterback [autotag]CJ Carr[/autotag]. The Irish also have another Michigan star, defensive lineman [autotag]Brandon Davis-Swain[/autotag], verbally committed in the class.

Notre Dame football: Harry Hiestand discusses offensive line

How much of a strength will this unit be in 2022?

At most places the hiring of an offensive line coach would be considered news but the excitement of it wouldn’t come close to the hiring of other position coaches.  But then again most places aren’t Notre Dame, specifically when it comes to offensive line lineage and few position coaches are as good at their craft as [autotag]Harry Hiestand[/autotag] is at his.

So after four years of [autotag]Jeff Quinn[/autotag] as offensive line coach, Notre Dame welcomes back Hiestand who helped develop the likes of [autotag]Zack Martin[/autotag], [autotag]Quenton Nelson[/autotag], [autotag]Ronnie Stanley[/autotag], and [autotag]Mike McGlinchey[/autotag] among others, is back and expectations are high for a unit that had plenty of issues a season ago.

So how does Hiestand see his offensive line this year?  Here is what the Notre Dame offensive line coach had to say.

Notre Dame’s recruiting run continues, adds 2024 offensive lineman

The recruiting run continues

The Irish Football team is on an absolute recruiting roll. Over the last three days starting on Thursday, Notre Dame gained commitments in the 2023 class from linebacker [autotag]Jaiden Ausberry[/autotag], safety [autotag]Ben Minich[/autotag] and running back [autotag]Dylan Edwards[/autotag].

Today, it was the 2024 classes turn for a verbal, as Pennsylvania offensive lineman Peter Jones committed to [autotag]Marcus Freeman[/autotag] and offensive line coach [autotag]Harry Hiestand[/autotag]. The six-foot-five-inch and 295-pound mauler selected Notre Dame over offers from Penn State, Michigan, Oklahoma, Texas A&M and many others. Jones becomes the sixth commitment in the class and the first offensive lineman. It seems that the visit in April was a success.

This verbal was the biggest surprise of the group, as Jones did not have a set commitment date. Regardless, the Irish once again are off to a very good start with the 2024 class.
