Who’s out and who’s in for the Panthers’ 2024 coaching staff

Now that the Panthers’ 2024 coaching staff is in place, let’s survey the damage.

The Carolina Panthers put the bow on their new coaching staff this afternoon.

As announced on Thursday, the team has hired five new coaches and retained 13 more. Per the official release, the moves have now rounded out the sideline staff for the upcoming season.

So, what did the turnover ultimately look like in the end?

Here are the coaching positions that underwent a change for Carolina going into 2024:

Who’s out and who’s in for the Panthers’ reconstructed coaching staff? Keep it here for the latest.

The turnover has begun.

Less than a week after the Carolina Panthers named Dave Canales their new head coach, the organization started up the reconstruction of their staff. The opening additions came on Tuesday—with the hirings of a handful of offensive assistants.

So, before we all get lost in the shuffle, keep it here as we track who’s in (and who’s out) from the Carolina sideline.

Panthers part ways with passing game coordinator Parks Frazier

Parks Frazier is the latest member of the 2023 staff to part ways with the Panthers.

It wasn’t all one-way traffic into 800 South Mint Street tonight.

On Tuesday, the Carolina Panthers announced the additions of four offensive assistants. Coming in as part of new head coach Dave Canales’ staff will be assistant head coach/run game coordinator Harold Goodwin, running backs coach Bernie Parmalee, wide receivers coach Rob Moore and offensive line coach Joe Gilbert.

But, as subsequently reported by Darin Gantt just moments later, passing game coordinator Parks Frazier has been informed that he will no longer continue with the organization.

Frazier began his NFL coaching career in 2018, as an assistant to then-Indianapolis Colts head coach Frank Reich. He’d go on to serve as an offensive quality control coach, assistant quarterbacks coach and—when Reich was fired in the middle of the 2022 season—the interim offensive coordinator.

Reich then brought Frazier over when he was hired as head coach of the Panthers last offseason. The 32-year-old, once again, stayed on to finish out the year despite Reich’s dismissal at the end of Week 12.

Panthers hire Harold Goodwin as assistant HC/run game coordinator

The Panthers have hired Columbia, S.C. native Harold Goodwin.

Carolina Panthers head coach Dave Canales is bringing in a local product to help lead his team.

As announced on Tuesday evening, the Panthers have hired Harold Goodwin as their new assistant head coach and run game coordinator. The Columbia, S.C. native has nearly two decades’ worth of experience on the NFL sidelines.

That experience started in 2004, as an assistant offensive line coach for the Chicago Bears. He’d then serve as the offensive line coach and quality control coordinator for the Pittsburgh Steelers from 2007 to 2011 and the offensive line coach for the Indianapolis Colts in 2012.

Goodwin then made the jump to the role of offensive coordinator for the Arizona Cardinals in 2013. He spent five seasons under head coach Bruce Arians in that role, a run that included a pair of playoff appearances.

Arians then brought Goodwin over with him to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers as his assistant head coach and run game coordinator in 2019. He worked in those positions through the 2023 campaign.

Bucs coaches Harold Goodwin and Joe Gilbert join Dave Canales in Carolina

Tampa Bay’s offensive staff has been almost entirely gutted since Canales left the Bucs to become the Panthers’ head coach.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ offensive staff is all but cleared.

NFL reporter Ian Rapoport and FOX Sports reporter Carmen Vitali reported Tuesday that Bucs assistant head coach and run game coordinator Harold Goodwin and offensive line coach Joe Gilbert are joining Panthers head coach Dave Canales in Carolina. Both had been with the Bucs before Canales arrived in Tampa Bay in 2023, but both are now making lateral moves away from the team to join Canales.

With the movement of Goodwin and Gilbert and the departure of Brad Idzik on Tuesday as well, Tampa Bay’s staff has faced massive turnover. The team’s offensive staff has almost entirely turned over since 2022, with the longest-tenured coach in one position being tight ends coach John Van Dam, who has held the position since 2022.

As Canales has converted most of Tampa Bay’s offensive staff, whoever the Bucs choose as their next offensive coordinator will likely bring a whole new cast of coaches for the offensive side of the ball in 2024.

Bucs assistant head coach: ‘I can’t control what the play-caller calls’

“(22/23 Double is) my favorite play by far because we’ve have a lot of success with it. It just depends on whether Byron is feeling like calling it that day or not. I can’t control that.”

If you’re wondering what’s going on with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ offensive play-calling, you’re not the only one.

Harold Goodwin, the Bucs’ assistant head coach and run game coordinator, doesn’t have a lot of answers for some of the play-calling decisions that are happening on game day this year.

When asked about one of the team’s most foundational run plays, 22/23 Double, Goodwin made it clear that it’s up to offensive coordinator Byron Leftwich to call it on Sundays.

“It’s in there. I can’t control what the play-caller calls,” Goodwin told Rick Stroud of the Tampa Bay Times.  “But it’s in there every week. It’s basically our base play. You start with that to create everything you do in the run game, from play-action passes to what we’re doing running-wise.”

“We have it in there,” Goodwin continued. “We have a lot of runs. It’s just whether we get to them or not. It’s how the play-caller is feeling. It’s my favorite play by far because we’ve have a lot of success with it. It just depends on whether Byron is feeling like calling it that day or not. I can’t control that.”

That sure sounds like a coach who wishes Leftwich would indeed call that play more often, especially in situations like the Bucs saw last Thursday night against the Baltimore Ravens. Despite leading at halftime thanks to an opening touchdown drive that featured plenty of success on the ground, Tampa Bay ran the ball just 10 times after that first possession.

It’ll be interesting to see if things change on Sunday, as the Bucs look to avoid a four-game losing streak against the Los Angeles Rams.

Top Super Bowl assistant has not heard from Dolphins about OC opening

Top Super Bowl assistant has not heard from Dolphins about OC opening

[jwplayer Jcf6FGZC-ThvAeFxT]

The 2021 Miami Dolphins offensive coordinator search is starting to feel like a never-ending saga. Chan Gailey, who served as the Dolphins play caller on offense for the 2020 season, resigned from the team just a few days after the end of the regular season. And in the weeks that have followed, the Dolphins have spent their sweet time trying to find the right coach to step into the role. But they have yet to fill the void. And once the team cot to Senior Bowl week and there was no hire announced, it felt apparent that perhaps the Dolphins decided to use the Senior Bowl week as an evaluation tool for their in-house candidates.

But the Senior Bowl wrapped up last Saturday afternoon. It’s now Tuesday. And there’s still no announced hire. Perhaps the Dolphins have already made the decision but simply haven’t announced it. But until they do, speculation will continue to run that this vacancy is still wide open. And with that speculation comes questions on which coaches still “unavailable” may also be in consideration to take the gig.

Enter Tampa Bay’s Harold Goodwin. Goodwin, who serves as the Buccaneers running game coordinator and assistant head coach, has been a staple of Bruce Arians-led coaching staffs for the majority of his NFL coaching career. Having served as the Arizona Cardinals offensive coordinator from 2013-2017 under Arians, Goodwin also has the high level experience that Brian Flores has coveted in some of his previous senior offensive coaching hires (Jim Caldwell in 2019 and Chan Gailey in 2020). There are some interesting dots to connect.

But, alas, as is the case with much of the other speculation, be it around Buffalo QB coach Ken Dorsey or anyone else, there’s not much of a trail. Goodwin, in the build up to the Super Bowl this weekend, told Adam Beasley of the Miami Herald that he has not heard from the Dolphins.

This isn’t to say he’s not in the running — Flores and the Dolphins may be extending him the common courtesy of letting him focus on the championship game before putting a promotion into his line of sight. If the Dolphins do indeed have interest in Goodwin, there should be plenty of optimism for what he can bring to the table. He was a part of two top-6 scoring offenses during his stretch in Arizona before serving as the assistant head coach of two consecutive top-3 scoring offenses in Tampa Bay between 2019 and 2020.

But unless Miami ends the suspense in the coming days, we’ll need to see the big game play out before we’re able to get any clarity on if Goodwin is a prime Dolphins candidate.
