Tracking all of the Panthers’ coaching departures in 2024

Here’s who the Panthers are moving on from as they rebuild their coaching staff for 2024

The Carolina Panthers are, once again, going out with the old and in with the new.

So now that we’re tallying up the new, let’s also keep track of the old.

Here are the team’s coaching departures heading into the 2024 campaign:

Panthers part ways with passing game coordinator Parks Frazier

Parks Frazier is the latest member of the 2023 staff to part ways with the Panthers.

It wasn’t all one-way traffic into 800 South Mint Street tonight.

On Tuesday, the Carolina Panthers announced the additions of four offensive assistants. Coming in as part of new head coach Dave Canales’ staff will be assistant head coach/run game coordinator Harold Goodwin, running backs coach Bernie Parmalee, wide receivers coach Rob Moore and offensive line coach Joe Gilbert.

But, as subsequently reported by Darin Gantt just moments later, passing game coordinator Parks Frazier has been informed that he will no longer continue with the organization.

Frazier began his NFL coaching career in 2018, as an assistant to then-Indianapolis Colts head coach Frank Reich. He’d go on to serve as an offensive quality control coach, assistant quarterbacks coach and—when Reich was fired in the middle of the 2022 season—the interim offensive coordinator.

Reich then brought Frazier over when he was hired as head coach of the Panthers last offseason. The 32-year-old, once again, stayed on to finish out the year despite Reich’s dismissal at the end of Week 12.

Colts’ Parks Frazier joining Panthers coaching staff

Parks Frazier is joining the Panthers coaching staff.

Former Indianapolis Colts offensive assistant coach Parks Frazier will join Frank Reich’s staff with the Carolina Panthers, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network.

Frazier worked in many roles throughout his tenure with the Colts. He first joined the staff in 2018 as the assistant to the head coach, a role he held for two seasons. He was then an offensive quality control coach in 2020 and the assistant quarterbacks coach in 2021-2022.

Frazier is most notably known for taking over as the interim offensive play-caller following the firing of Reich when Jeff Saturday was hired as the interim head coach.

It’s no secret that Reich will be pulling some of the coaches he had during his tenure with the Colts, and there very well could be more on the way.

Meanwhile, the Colts officially introduced Shane Steichen as their new head coach, and he will begin filling out his staff this week.

Panthers HC Frank Reich officiated new assistant’s wedding in 2020

Panthers HC Frank Reich officiated the wedding between new passing game coordinator Parks Frazier and former team reporter Caroline Cann in 2020.

Long before Carolina Panthers head coach Frank Reich married Parks Frazier back to his staff on Wednesday, he literally wed Parks Frazier to his wife.

Back in 2020, when Reich was still leading the Indianapolis Colts, he served as the officiant for the wedding between Frazier—his assistant quarterbacks coach at the time—and Caroline Cann. And if that name sounds familiar, you may remember Cann’s days as a team reporter for the Panthers in 2019.

Reich, an ordained minister and former pastor, said on The Dan Patrick Show earlier that spring that he was still officiating a wedding every two or three years to that point. Luckily for Mr. and Mrs. Frazier, they were able to pencil in the rare appearance for their special occasion.

The 31-year-old was initially brought on the Colts staff as an assistant when Reich began his head-coaching tenure in 2018. He went on to take up roles as an offensive quality control coach and assistant quarterbacks coach, and was promoted to interim offensive coordinator under Jeff Saturday following Reich’s dismissal this past season.

So, welcome aboard, Parks and welcome back, Caroline.

Panthers hiring Parks Frazier as passing game coordinator

The Panthers are hiring former Colts interim offensive coordinator Parks Frazier as their new passing game coordinator.

How often does one accept a job offered to him by the man who officiated his wedding? Well, it just happened for Parks Frazier and the Carolina Panthers.

As announced by the team on Wednesday morning, Frazier has agreed to terms to become the team’s new passing game coordinator. He now rejoins head coach Frank Reich, his former boss and marriage officiant.

The 31-year-old Corinth, Miss. native got his coaching start as a defensive quality control coach at Samford University in the spring of 2015. Later that year, he’d move on to Middle Tennessee State University for the same role.

After spending two more years in the college ranks, as a graduate assistant at Arkansas State University, Frazier was hired by the Colts as an assistant to Reich in 2018. He’d spend five campaigns in Indianapolis—also serving as an offensive quality control coach, assistant quarterbacks coach and interim offensive coordinator after Jeff Saturday took over for Reich this past season.

Parks Frazier to serve as Colts offensive play-caller

Colts passing game specialist/assistant QBs coach Parks Frazier will call plays.

Following the hiring of Jeff Saturday as the interim head coach, Parks Frazier will get a slight promotion to serve as the offensive play-caller for the Indianapolis Colts.

Currently holding the role of pass game specialist and assistant quarterbacks coach, Frazier will now be the one running the offense. His close ties to Frank Reich should make the transition a bit easier on the offensive players.

Upon the introductory press conference Monday night, Saturday told the media he hadn’t interviewed every candidate to call plays. while quarterbacks coach Scott Milanovich has a history calling plays, it appears they are giving Frazier a shot.

Frazier has been with the Colts since Reich arrived back in 2018.

There are likely going to be plenty of changes over the next eight games and Frazier being the play-caller chiefly among them.

Colts make several coaching changes

Colts find a few new coaches.

The Indianapolis Colts made several changes to their coaching staff, including the hiring of three new coaches, the team announced Thursday.

Some of these have been reported while others are new. The Colts hired Brian Baker to be the new defensive line coach, Mike Groh will be the wide receivers coach and Tyler Boyles has been hired to be the Assistant to the Head Coach. Those are the new additions.

A few current coaches also made some changes. Kevin Patullo, the former wide receivers coach, will be moving into a new role called the Pass Game Specialist. Parks Frazier has been named the offensive quality control coach.

The newest addition is Baker, who has immense experience working as a defensive coach—both in the NFL and at the collegiate level. From the release given by the team:

Baker has 36 years of coaching experience, including 19 seasons in the NFL. He served as associate head coach/defensive line coach at Alabama in 2019. From 2016-18, Baker was the defensive line coach at Mississippi State. He was an assistant coach at Covenant Christian Academy of Colleyville (Texas) in 2015. Baker previously spent 19 years (1996-2014) in the NFL and coached eight Pro Bowlers. He spent time on the defensive staffs for the Washington Redskins (2014), Cleveland Browns (2013), Dallas Cowboys (2011-12), Carolina Panthers (2009-2010), St. Louis Rams (2006-08), Minnesota Vikings (2001-05), Detroit Lions (1997-2000) and San Diego Chargers (1996). Baker coached at Georgia Tech from 1987-95. He served as the linebackers coach in each of those years and added the defensive coordinator title in 1995. Baker coached running backs at Army in 1986. He spent two seasons at his alma mater, Maryland, as a graduate assistant (1985) and student assistant (1984). Baker played outside linebacker at Maryland from 1980-83 and helped the Terps win the ACC championship in 1983.
