Lions 1st injury report for Week 7 comes after a canceled practice

The banged-up Detroit Lions had a walkthrough instead of a full practice ahead of Week 7, with a long list of injured players

The first official Detroit Lions injury report for Week 6 has a lot more names on it than anyone wants to see. It’s a banged-up Lions team heading to Baltimore for a Week 7 showdown with the Baltimore Ravens.

How banged up are the Lions?

The Lions coaching staff opted to cancel practice on Wednesday, instead opting for a walkthrough to help rest up the cavalcade of sore bodies and injuries that comprise the active roster after six weeks of physical football.

Because it’s a walkthrough, the participation level was an estimate only provided by the coaching staff. Three players were deemed out:

RG Jonah Jackson (ankle)

RB David Montgomery (ribs)

RB Craig Reynolds (hamstring/toe)

A few more were listed as limited, including another running back.

DB Brian Branch (ankle)

RB Jahmyr Gibbs (hamstring)

TE Sam LaPorta (calf)

TE James Mitchell (hamstring)

DL Josh Paschal (knee)

C Frank Ragnow (toe)

That’s a lot of starters and a cluster of offensive positions decimated.

Lions snap count notes vs. Buccaneers: Dan Campbell rode his starters to victory

Lions snap count notes vs. Buccaneers: Dan Campbell rode his starters to victory, playing reserves less than normal on both sides

The Detroit Lions improved to 5-1 with Sunday’s 20-6 win in Tampa Bay, and they got the victory by leaning heavily on the starting lineup, especially on offense.

Head coach Dan Campbell shortened the bench on offense in the win. Some of that was injury-related necessity. With regular starting guards Jonah Jackson and Halapoulivaaati Vaitai unable to start, the starting five playing the whole way was a necessity. All five played all 70 offensive snaps, as did QB Jared Goff.

The other key starters played very high percentages of the game. Amon-Ra St. Brown was on the field for over 90 percent (64 of 70), followed closely by Josh Reynolds (57) at wide receiver. Rookie TE Sam LaPorta repped on 58 snaps, with Brock Wright in for 43 as the Lions leaned heavily into using two TEs against the Bucs’ impressive defensive front.

The reserves didn’t get much action. Jameson Williams caught his two passes on just 16 snaps, which is one more than Kalif Raymond got on offense. David Montgomery’s injury after 18 snaps thrust Craig Reynolds (43) and Devine Ozigbo (6) into more action than expected. Dan Skipper played four reps as an extra tackle in his first game back on the active roster.

On defense, 17 players saw action for Detroit. Five never left the field, playing all 56 snaps: DBs Kerby Joseph, Tracy Walker, Jerry Jacobs, Cam Sutton and LB Alex Anzalone.

DE Aidan Hutchinson crept back up over 85 percent usage again, playing 50 reps. John Cominsky played a season-high 43 snaps, out-repping Charles Harris (18), Levi Onwuzurike (11) and Romeo Okwara (9) combined in the No. 2 DE role.

The Lions split playing a third LB and a fifth DB pretty evenly. Will Harris was the No. 5 DB and played 39 snaps, with no other CBs or safeties seeing action. Jack Campbell was the third LB at 29 snaps.

Vaitai did play, but only on special teams. He was one of 11 Lions to appear strictly on special teams. Notable again amongst the 11: linebacker Malcolm Rodriguez, his second straight game no seeing any action on defense.

Lions injury update: The starting OL all returns healthy enough to practice

Taylor Decker and Halapoulivaati Vaitai were both practicing with the starters on Tuesday

After a few weeks of mixing and matching healthy bodies along the offensive line, the Detroit Lions returned to full strength for Tuesday’s practice ahead of Week 5.

All of the projected starting five to start the season were active and practicing at the team’s training facility in Allen Park in the portion open to the media. That includes left tackle Taylor Decker, who aggravated a high-ankle sprain injury in last Thursday’s win over the Green Bay Packers. Decker had missed the prior two games after being injured in Week 1 in the win over the Chiefs in Kansas City.

Also back is Halapoulivaati Vaitai at right guard. “Big V” was injured in a pile-up near the end of the Week 2 loss to the Seahawks. He hasn’t even been a limited participant since suffering the knee injury, being replaced by Graham Glasgow for the last two weeks.

Center Frank Ragnow is still battling through a toe injury, but it’s not slowed him down. Left guard Jonah Jackson was questionable for Week 4 with a thigh bruise but played in Green Bay. Right tackle Penei Sewell, who played in place of Decker on the left side in Weeks 2-3, has remained healthy to this point.

This week’s schedule is different than most, with the Lions coming off the Thursday night game in Week 4. Tuesday is typically a day off for players, but that got pushed to Wednesday due to the unusual schedule.

Lions final injury report for Week 4: 3 players ruled out, 5 starters listed as questionable

The final Detroit Lions injury report and game status for the short Week 4 preparations has ruled out three players. Along with the trio ruled out by the training staff, several others are listed officially as questionable for Thursday night’s matchup in Green Bay with the Packers.

Offensive linemen Matt Nelson and Halapoulivaati Vaitai are out with their knee injuries. It’s also a knee injury that will sideline fullback Jason Cabinda, who was listed out after suffering the injury in the first practice of the week.

Five players are listed as questionable. All are projected starters when healthy:

Jackson was the only one of the questionable players to see action in the Week 3 win over the Atlanta Falcons.

Updating the Lions offensive line injuries and shuffling

The latest on Taylor Decker, Matt Nelson, contingency plans and more with the Detroit Lions offensive line injuries

There ha been considerable shuffling along the Detroit Lions offensive line over the early part of the season. Injuries have been a blight on the unit, widely considered the core strength of the team.

Left tackle Taylor Decker has missed the last two games with an ankle injury. It’s both a high ankle sprain and a bone bruise, a painful injury that he played through for most of the Week 1 win over the Kansas City Chiefs.

There is real optimism Decker will return for Thursday night’s NFC North matchup in Green Bay. Decker was a limited participant in the Monday practice session, which was a walkthrough. He feels ready to return.

“It’s going to hurt, but as long as I can be functional, I can deal with the pain,” Decker told reporters on Monday. “I’ve done it plenty of times before. I’m confident I can go out there and help us win, so it’ll be fun being back out there with everybody. Big thing is just — the days leading up to the game, just make sure it’s feeling as best as it can and just go out there. You’re going to have the adrenaline pumping, and I’m sure it’ll feel even better than it did today.”

Decker returning to the lineup would be a huge boost for the unit. That would move Penei Sewell, who struggled with penalties and pass protection on the left side, back to his customary right tackle spot.

The right tackle won’t be Matt Nelson, that much we know. Nelson left Sunday’s win over the Atlanta Falcons with a knee injury. He will need surgery and will be placed on injured reserve.

“Nelson, we’ll put Nelson down. He’s going to require surgery, so I hate that for him, so he’s down,” head coach Dan Campbell said of the swing tackle.

Nelson had started the two games at right tackle with Sewell shifting to fill Decker’s spot. The man who stepped in when Nelson got hurt in Week 3, Dan Skipper, also left Sunday’s game with an ankle injury. Because Skipper is only on the practice squad and not the 53-man roster, the Lions are not required to provide any injury info or update on Skipper. And they did not.

Rookie Colby Sorsdal finished the game as the right tackle. The fifth-rounder from William & Mary played tackle in college but had been almost exclusively working at guard in Detroit. He played well enough to prove he’s a viable emergency plan at right tackle, making his NFL debut in such a circumstance.

“Sorsdal went in and honestly, for – he did a solid job,” Campbell said of the rookie. “He went in and filled in admirably and he’ll get better from those reps that he took, so yeah. That’s about the best way I can say it.”

If Decker cannot play against Green Bay, expect Sewell to stay on the left side and Sorsdal to get the start at right tackle.

No matter who is at right tackle, they’ll be aligned next to Graham Glasgow and not Halapoulivaati Vaitai. Big V missed Week 3 with a knee injury suffered in Week 2, and he is not expected to play on Thursday night.

This is where the depth gets complicated. Sorsdal would normally be the next man up at guard if something happened to Glasgow or left guard Jonaah Jackson, who incidentally was listed as a limited participant in Monday’s practice with a knee injury of his own. But if Sorsdal is the right tackle, then the relief duty falls to Kayode Awosika. The Lions signed Awosika to the 53-man roster last week from their own practice squad.

Center Frank Ragnow, who did not practice Monday as a veteran rest day, is dealing with a long-term toe injury of his own. Glasgow is his backup in the pivot. The Lions don’t have anyone with center experience on the practice squad, so a game-day promotion for Michael Niese could be in order. Niese played guard at Temple and Dayton and spent the 2022 season on the Chicago Bear practice squad.

The Lions also have an opening on the active roster with Nelson heading to I.R., one which could be used on a reserve with some center experience.

Lions injury update: Taylor Decker, Kerby Joseph among those returning to limited practice

The Lions 1st injury report of Week 4 saw several players return to practice on a limited basis, along with a couple of new injuries

The short week between Week 3 and Week 4 forces the Detroit Lions into an accelerated practice schedule. What is typically Wednesday on a normal week gets pushed to Monday, and that includes the Lions’ first practice participation report of the week.

For being released on the day after a game, it’s an upbeat practice injury report. Only three players were held out of the walkthrough session. They’re all offensive linemen:

  • OT Matt Nelson
  • OG Halapoulivaati Vaitai
  • OC Frank Ragnow

Nelson suffered a knee injury in the win over the Falcons, while Vaitai injured his knee in the Week 2 loss to the Seahawks. Ragnow was given a veteran rest day, as is typical for the Pro Bowl center.

There are a few Lions who missed Sunday’s game but were able to earn limited practice status. Foremost of that group is OT Taylor Decker, who has missed the last two games with an ankle injury. Decker was joined on the limited participant list by some other important names:

  • S Kerby Joseph (hip)
  • RB David Montgomery (thigh)
  • CB Emmanuel Moseley (knee/hamstring)

There were also some new injuries amongst the limited participant grouping:

  • FB Jason Cabinda (knee)
  • OG Jonah Jackson (thigh)

Detroit will make the game status declarations on Wednesday and then travel to Green Bay for Thursday night’s NFC North showdown with the Packers.

Lions injury report: 6 starters sit out with injuries

Lions injury report: 6 starters sit out Wednesday’s practice session with injuries

The first official practice participation report from the Detroit Lions for Week 3 offers a discouraging look at the banged-up team. Six players who would be projected starters when healthy sat out with injuries, including two offensive line stalwarts.

Left tackle Taylor Decker (ankle) and right guard Halapoulivaati Vaitai (knee) both sat out. Decker missed the Week 2 matchup with the Seahawks, a game where Vaitai exited after suffering a scary-looking injury.

Running back David Montgomery (thigh) and wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown (toe) also missed practice. Both suffered their injuries in the loss to Seattle.

On the defensive side of the ball, safety Kerby Joseph (hip) is another victim of the physical affair in Ford Field last Sunday. Cornerback Emmanuel Moseley continues to be sidelined with a knee and a hamstring, injuries that have prevented him from all but two practice sessions since joining the team.

In addition to the players held out, starting wideout Josh Reynolds was limited with a groin injury. Fellow wideout Antoine Green worked out under the NFL’s concussion protocol. Barring any setbacks, Green could be cleared as early as Thursday.

Finally, center Frank Ragnow was a full participant with his toe injury. Expect Ragnow to have a veteran rest day on Thursday.

Lions injury update after a physical Week 2 loss

Head coach Dan Campbell gave updates on David Montgomery, Big V, Taylor Decker and more

After a physically intense contest in Ford Field on Sunday, the Detroit Lions had a few players in the walking wounded category. Head coach Dan Campbell offered some updates on a few of the injured Lions during his press conference on Monday.

5 Lions who need to play well against the Seahawks

The Detroit Lions host the Seattle Seahawks at home for their Week 2 matchup. Here are 5 players who need to play well against the Seahawks

The Detroit Lions are looking to continue their momentum into Week 2 when they face off against the Seattle Seahawks, who lost their first game against the Los Angeles Rams.

The Lions made a statement in their season opener and are expected to bring the same energy to Ford Field. Meanwhile, the Seahawks are dealing with some injuries that the Lions can capitalize on to secure their second win in as many weeks. After reviewing their performance in the Kansas City game, the coaches and players have had time to prepare for the tough Seattle opponent during the mini-bye.

To secure their victory, the Lions will need to rely on the performance of several key players. Here are five Lions players who need to play well against the Seahawks.

What OL options do the Lions have if LT Taylor Decker can’t play?

The Lions have multiple options to replace LT Taylor Decker in the unlikely event he can’t play against the Seahawks.

The Detroit Lions came out of Kansas City in Week 1 without any serious injuries. That’s a cherry on top of the delicious victory sundae of beating the Chiefs. But there was one injury that popped up that could sour the Week 2 lineup against Seattle.

Left tackle Taylor Decker suffered an injury to his ankle in the win over the Chiefs. He didn’t miss any snaps in the game, but Decker was in a walking boot afterward. The veteran also missed practice on Tuesday due to the ankle.

Head coach Dan Campbell doesn’t seem too worried about not having Decker in Ford Field on Sunday. Here’s what Campbell said about his left tackle,

“He played the whole game with it and finished out, which man, that was outstanding. I mean, Deck’s a tough SOB, man. So, to watch him battle out there, it was impressive. So, look, we’ll know a lot more in a few days, but I’m encouraged because I know, there again, he finished out that game and we’re pretty good everywhere else.”

Replacing Decker — in the unlikely event he misses the Seahawks matchup — would not be easy. The Lions do have some moving pieces and parts that give Campbell and offensive line coach Hank Fraley some options, however…
