Notre Dame-Wisconsin puts up massive ratings

Maybe that explains the 11 AM start a bit more…

You haven’t heard much from the “Notre Dame is irrelevant” crowd much lately.

Sure, the vocal ones out there were chirping a bit after Notre Dame’s close calls against Florida State and Toledo but not much has been heard the last few weeks.  You can argue just exactly how good Notre Dame is and that’s fine and dandy, but you can’t argue they’re irrelevant as the TV ratings they continue to bring in simply say otherwise.

According to Matt Fortuna of The Athletic, the Irish and Badgers contest averaged 5.369 million viewers on Fox.  According to Fortuna that’s a 20% increase as to the number of viewers Fox averaged on a Big Ten Saturday in 2019 (obviously things were a bit different in 2020).  I know a lot of Notre Dame fans didn’t like the 12 p.m. ET start but Fox gets big numbers on these when matchups call for it like Saturday’s clearly did.

It’s another huge ratings performance for Notre Dame, a few short weeks after putting up a huge number for the opener at Florida State.  You don’t raise a banner for this success but it certainly doesn’t hurt when you’re trying to pitch your program to 16-year old kids, either.

Gus Johnson went nuts calling the Jaguars’ 109-yard FG return and NFL fans loved it

Of course, Gus Johnson was on the call.

If you were taking a look at the Week 3 NFL matchups, you probably saw the Cardinals-Jaguars game and thought it would be an easy, uneventful win for Arizona.

But you’d be wrong because Gus Johnson was on the call for Fox. And nothing uneventful ever happens when Gus Johnson is watching. It’s the rule.

The Cardinals tried to go into the half with a three-point lead by lining up Matt Prater to attempt a record-breaking, the 68-yard field goal. It was a needlessly risky call by Arizona Cardinals coach Kliff Kingsbury who didn’t think that the Jaguars would be able to pull off, oh, a 109-yard missed field goal return for a touchdown.

Jamal Agnew had different ideas, and it nearly broke Gus Johnson.

On Saturday morning, the No. 15 Wisconsin Badgers will face off against the No. 10 Notre Dame Fighting Irish at Soldier Field in Chicago.

This will be one of the most important matchups of the season for the Badgers, not only because they will be facing former Wisconsin quarterback Jack Coan at the helm for the Fighting Irish, but because of the implications it has for the Badgers in the Big Ten West. Notre Dame and Wisconsin have played each other 16 times in their program histories with the latest matchup occurring back in 1964 where the Fighting Irish won 31-7.

Hopefully, the Badgers can overcome a talented Notre Dame team, in what should be a great matchup to watch at Soldier Field.

NFL fans rightfully loved Gus Johnson’s amazing call of the Vikings’ missed FG as time expired

This was some classic Gus Johnson.

Gus Johnson has had himself a weekend.

We all know by now how Gus can get excited when he’s calling big plays and this weekend he had a few of those moments.

On Saturday the play-by-play legend had two awesome calls during the Nebraska-Oklahoma game.

Then today he made his way to Arizona to call the Vikings-Cardinals game, which turned out to be the wildest game of the day and was a perfect game to have Gus Johnson on the call.

The Vikings were able to get in field goal range in the final seconds but then could only watch as Greg Joseph’s 37-yard FG attempt sailed right and gave the Cardinals a 34-33 win.

You need to hear Gus’ call:

Tremendous.

NFL fans loved it. Well, I’m guessing Vikings fans didn’t. But everyone else did.

Gus Johnson plus Kyler Murray equals perfection

Kyler Murray delivered an electric moment for the Arizona Cardinals. We should have known something like this was coming with Gus Johnson on the call.

We should have known the Arizona Cardinals game against the Minnesota Vikings was going to make for enticing television.

Gus Johnson is on the call.

Incredible, indelible moments tend to follow the exuberant broadcaster everywhere he goes. Take yesterday’s renewal of the storied rivalry between Oklahoma and Nebraska. When Sooners defensive back D.J. Graham turned in the interception of the year — with the game hanging in the balance — of course it was Johnson in the booth losing his mind, like the rest of us watching at home:

Well, fast-forward to Sunday. Johnson made the trip to Arizona to be on the call for the Vikings-Cardinals tilt, with former NFL defensive back Aqib Talib alongside him in the booth. We should have known a similar moment would be following him to the desert.

Enter Kyler Murray:

Murray somehow evades the pressure and finds rookie Rondale Moore alone for the long touchdown, to give the Cardinals the lead. Arizona had trailed by 13 earlier, but this electric moment puts the home team in the lead late in the first half.

And, as he did earlier in the weekend, Johnson lost his mind in the booth.

Given that the venerable play-by-play man is still on the call for this one, the electric moments might not be done for the afternoon in the desert.

Gus Johnson had 2 GUS JOHNSON moments during Nebraska-Oklahoma

“OHHHH WHAT AN INTERCEPTION!”

Gus Johnson really really loves college football.

For years now, Johnson has been one of the most hype broadcasters in all of college football. From making clutch interceptions and game-winning touchdowns sound immaculate, Johnson’s voice has accompanied some of the best moments in the sport.

And now, Johnson has done it again. Twice!

On Saturday, in the fourth quarter of the Nebraska and Oklahoma game, the Cornhuskers were yards out from the red zone looking to tighten up a 23-9 game. Facing down a long fourth and 18, Nebraska quarterback Adrian Martinez was flushed out of the pocket and was forced to make a hasty throw down field, which was intercepted by D.J. Graham on a gorgeous, one-handed play.

It was a beautiful leaping interception, and Johnson absolutely loses his mind on the call. Listen in for yourself.

What a call! And what a play by Graham to go up for that ball and snag one of the best interceptions we’ve seen this year.

This wasn’t Johnson’s only big broadcasting moment of the game either, as he absolutely lost it when Oklahoma returned a blocked extra point for two points of their own at the end of the third quarter.

Yep, that’s the stuff.

LISTEN: How Jaquan Brisker’s big INT sounded on TV and Penn State radio

Hear how Penn State’s big interception by Jaquan Brisker sounded on Penn State’s radio feed

There are those moments that stand out that you will always remember. On Saturday, Penn State opened their 2021 season with Big Ten battle against the Wisconsin Badgers from Camp Randall Stadium, and it was full of some memorable moments.

In the fourth quarter with Penn State leading 16-10 and Wisconsin in a 4th & Goal from the Nittany Lions’ eight-yard line, Penn State needed a big play. Leave it to preseason All-American safety Jaquan Brisker to step up and make the big play. Brisker read the read from Wisconsin quarterback Graham Mertz and made an adjustment to step in front of the pass to the end zone. Brisker then returned the interception 41 yards which would help Penn State come closer to a big road win.

And when a big play happens on FOX, you know play-by-play announcer Gus Johnson is going to go a little crazy. He did not disappoint in that department…

Of course, what big Penn Stae moment is complete without hearing the voice of radio voice of the Nittany Lions Steve Jones? You can watch Jones making his call on the big play, along with analyst Jack Ham sharing his immediate breakdown of what he saw.

Gus Johnson absolutely lost it over Penn State’s late interception in Wisconsin upset

Classic Gus Johnson!

Saturday’s Big Ten matchup between No. 19 Penn State and No. 12 Wisconsin was all about the defense — or rather, an abundance of offensive struggles, depending on how you look at it. After going into halftime with a whopping 0-0 score, the Nittany Lions pulled off a 16-10 upset on the road in large part thanks to back-to-back interceptions, including a game-ender.

And FOX Sports broadcaster Gus Johnson had a perfect, quintessential call for one of them.

Penn State got on the board first early in the second half and took the lead again nearly midway through the fourth quarter with junior running back Noah Cain’s two-yard touchdown run. The Nittany Lions missed the extra point, meaning Wisconsin didn’t have to pull off something miraculous to win.

But Penn State’s defense came up big time on the Badgers’ final two drives, picking off sophomore quarterback Graham Mertz twice deep in Penn State territory to secure the upset.

With about two-and-a-half minutes left in the game, Penn State senior safety Jaquan Brisker intercepted Mertz’s fourth-and-goal pass and had a huge 41-yard return.

And in true Gus Johnson fashion, the broadcaster had a phenomenal call:

“The sophomore quarterback drops back, floats it in the inside. And it’s intercepted! Brisker! Wowwwww! Brisker! What a game! Penn State! Defense! Defense!”

Classic Gus Johnson just yelling exclamations, like so many college football fans do at their own TVs. And in a game without much offense, he made the most of these big defensive plays.

Penn State couldn’t capitalize on the turnover and ended up punting, which gave Wisconsin one more chance to score a game-winning touchdown and extra point with about a minute left.

But on third-and-17 from Penn State’s 32-yard line, Mertz threw another interception, and this pass was picked off by senior safety Ji’Ayir Brown to end the game and upset the Badgers.

Both interceptions were incredible — unless you’re a Wisconsin fan — but Johnson’s call of the first one will surely end up being one of his best this season.

How to watch, listen and stream Wisconsin’s season opener against the Penn State Nittany Lions:

On Saturday morning, the No. 12 Wisconsin Badgers will face off against the No. 19 Penn State Nittany Lions at Camp Randall Stadium to open up their 2021 season.

This matchup will feature many unknowns for both teams after the perennial Big Ten powerhouses struggled in the shortened 2020 season. The Nittany Lions and Badgers both floundered in developing a consistent passing game last season and will be looking for bounce-back years. However, if you look at their last few matchups in recent years, the Badgers have lost the last four against the Nittany Lions.

Hopefully, a healthy Wisconsin team can break the losing streak against Penn State, but either way, it should be an outstanding game for Wisconsin fans to tune into.

Gus Johnson shares what Michigan football needs to do to win in 2021

Really, really good stuff from FOX Sports’ main play-by-play caller! #GoBlue

[mm-video type=playlist id=01eqbzardvge799bm2 player_id=01f5k5y2jb3twsvdg4 image=https://wolverineswire.usatoday.com/wp-content/plugins/mm-video/images/playlist-icon.png]

DETROIT, Mich. — For FOX Sports, Gus Johnson is royalty. He calls all of the network’s biggest college games, across football and basketball. With color analyst Joel Klatt, the formidable duo is on the call for FOX’s ‘Big Noon Kickoff’ along with being the primary pair for the Big Ten championship game in December.

On Saturday afternoon, Johnson was back in his native Detroit, giving back to his community, having donated $30,000 — which was matched by FOX Sports along with another $10,000 donation — to the Detroit West Side Cubs, a youth football organization which Johnson once was a part in his youth. Coach Price was the one who gave him his nickname Gus, which has stuck to this day.

Being the primary play-by-play caller for FOX Sports, the media organization which has the first rights to the Big Ten, means that he’s seen a lot of Michigan games firsthand. And Johnson grew up a Michigan fan himself, so he has a unique perspective on the Wolverines.

At the moment, fan and media enthusiasm for the maize and blue is at what seems to be an all-time low. The annual Cleveland.com poll has Michigan finishing fourth in the division — a far cry from expectations of the winningest program in the sport. Considering that the Wolverines went 2-4 in 2020, it’s easy to see why there aren’t many people buying what Jim Harbaugh & co. are selling.

But Johnson isn’t giving up hope, noting how hard it is to evaluate any team coming off of last year.

“I don’t think there’s a read off of any program coming off this COVID thing, man,” Johnson said. “When I knew that COVID was real? When they canceled Michigan-Ohio State. I was supposed to call that game. I was like, ‘Wow!’ You never think Michigan-Ohio State is gonna get canceled. When they canceled Michigan-Ohio State — I think the jury is out on most teams.

“As a Michigan fan, I think this is gonna be our year. As a fan — the fan part of me. That’s one thing I refuse to give up. Hopefully — they gotta get a quarterback. That’s what it is.”

[lawrence-related id=36119,36050,36047]

Could it be that simple? Does Michigan just need a quarterback to fix its woes?

Johnson’s broadcast partner, Joel Klatt, told WolverinesWire this week that it just needs solid quarterback play and a healthy offensive line, but for Johnson himself, he feels that what Michigan needs most is a competent signal-caller.

“100%. Gotta get a quarterback,” Johnson said. “Somebody’s gotta come in and win, win some games. The coach can only do so much. Sometimes, you’ve gotta have guys go out there and win the game. Give the coach a Heisman — ‘I’ve got this one.’ Just play. I don’t think that’s been there. They’ve had some guys that have been decent, but not great.

“You look at Ohio State and they have two first-round guys — Field and Haskins. J.T. Barrett played in the NFL, Braxton Miller plays in the NFL. He wasn’t a quarterback, but we’re talking NFL players. We’re talking about the quarterback position. That’s the most important position in sports — period. Not even close.”

[listicle id=36135]

Michigan has made changes this offseason, having revamped the coaching staff — particularly on the defensive side of the ball. But the buck starts and stops with the man at the top, Johnson says.

Jim Harbaugh signed a contract extension this offseason, but he took a major pay cut unless he hits just about every contractual benchmark set before him — winning the conference, becoming coach of the year, going to the College Football Playoff and beyond. Johnson assures that Harbaugh is well aware that he’s fallen short of expectations and knows that he has to do what it takes to turn things around.

However, this isn’t the same time period in which Michigan was dominating.

The last time Michigan won a national championship, 1997, the internet wasn’t in every home as it is now. We certainly didn’t have smart phones and social media wasn’t even a thought at the time.

Johnson says that Harbaugh and the Wolverines have to contend with some newfound truths — you can’t live in the shadow of the past and expect similar results.

“My dog’s name is Bo, named after coach, but the days of Bo Schembechler are over,” Johnson said. “He never won a national championship. Today’s college football — I thought Jim did a great job coming off RichRod and Brady Hoke, but it’s different now. The game is different. Kids can go and transfer, it’s like free agency in college sports. Now you’re gonna have the NIL, guys are gonna be getting paid big money.

“It’s different, so you have to figure it out differently. The kid, he’s not running through the wall for you anymore — not like that. He’s on his phone, which is a computer that allows him to go all over the world in a second and have a following and followers and people like what he says. So dealing with this kind of person, it’s a challenge. And I just don’t think that the Wolverines have caught up to it, if you look at their record. Something is broken and hopefully, they’ll fix it — fast.”
