Gus Johnson absolutely lost it over Penn State’s late interception in Wisconsin upset

Classic Gus Johnson!

Saturday’s Big Ten matchup between No. 19 Penn State and No. 12 Wisconsin was all about the defense — or rather, an abundance of offensive struggles, depending on how you look at it. After going into halftime with a whopping 0-0 score, the Nittany Lions pulled off a 16-10 upset on the road in large part thanks to back-to-back interceptions, including a game-ender.

And FOX Sports broadcaster Gus Johnson had a perfect, quintessential call for one of them.

Penn State got on the board first early in the second half and took the lead again nearly midway through the fourth quarter with junior running back Noah Cain’s two-yard touchdown run. The Nittany Lions missed the extra point, meaning Wisconsin didn’t have to pull off something miraculous to win.

But Penn State’s defense came up big time on the Badgers’ final two drives, picking off sophomore quarterback Graham Mertz twice deep in Penn State territory to secure the upset.

With about two-and-a-half minutes left in the game, Penn State senior safety Jaquan Brisker intercepted Mertz’s fourth-and-goal pass and had a huge 41-yard return.

And in true Gus Johnson fashion, the broadcaster had a phenomenal call:

“The sophomore quarterback drops back, floats it in the inside. And it’s intercepted! Brisker! Wowwwww! Brisker! What a game! Penn State! Defense! Defense!”

Classic Gus Johnson just yelling exclamations, like so many college football fans do at their own TVs. And in a game without much offense, he made the most of these big defensive plays.

Penn State couldn’t capitalize on the turnover and ended up punting, which gave Wisconsin one more chance to score a game-winning touchdown and extra point with about a minute left.

But on third-and-17 from Penn State’s 32-yard line, Mertz threw another interception, and this pass was picked off by senior safety Ji’Ayir Brown to end the game and upset the Badgers.

Both interceptions were incredible — unless you’re a Wisconsin fan — but Johnson’s call of the first one will surely end up being one of his best this season.
