NBA media poll: Stephen Curry ahead of Kevin Durant for MVP to start 2022

Stephen Curry enters 2022 as the leading contender for the MVP award with Kevin Durant in striking distance and Giannis Antetokounmpo and Nikola Jokic also lurking.

To determine the top contenders for the MVP award, HoopsHype anonymously polled 20 media members who voted on last year’s official NBA awards for their current top five MVP rankings.

As with the official vote, the top player received 10 points, the second received seven points, the third received five points, the fourth received three points, and the fifth player received one point for each ballot.

7 totally hilarious and extremely fun early-season NBA stats that will blow your mind

These numbers are insane.

Look, the NBA season is only a week old. Paying attention to any stats or looking for trends at this point is a fool’s errand.

So y’all can just call me a fool then. I truly couldn’t help myself.

I logged on to NBA.com’s stats to see which teams were doing what and, holy cow, are there some absolutely nonsensical things going on in the NBA right now.

The Grizzlies look incredible and awful at the same time. The Knicks are chucking ridiculous amounts of 3’s. The Thunder are Thundering at astronomical Thunder levels. Oh, and the Magic are Thundering, too. Harder than anyone has ever Thundered before — well, except the Thunder.

Anyway, there’s a lot happening right now that doesn’t matter and doesn’t make any sense. But thanks to NBA.com’s stats as well as StatMuse’s research tool, we recorded them all here for you.

Enjoy.

Klay Thompson said he’s ‘never been hungrier’ to return after the Warriors after loss to the Grizzlies

Klay Thompson is ready to come back.

Klay Thompson has been away from the game of basketball for two consecutive seasons because of injury. First, a torn ACL. Next, a torn Achilles tendon.

Conventional wisdom says that he probably won’t ever be the same player he was before those injuries. They’re both difficult ones to come back from — particularly the Achilles.

Despite that, though, Thompson said he’s “never been hungrier” to return — especially after the Warriors’ loss to the Grizzlies.

After the loss, Thompson took to Instagram and talked about how proud he was of his teammates and what they had to overcome this season. He also said that the trials they went through will help for next season.

But more than that, though, he said he’s ready to make his return.

“I’ve got to watch a lot of hoops the last 2 years, and figured out quick it’s not my specialty. While our season comes to an end, mines just getting started and I’ve never been hungrier. I truly believe my best ball lies ahead of me. We ain’t done I promise you that.”

That sounds like a man ready to play ball. You can tell he was itching to get on the floor against Memphis. Here he is going nuts on the sideline watching the game.

Yeah, it’ll be fun when he hits the floor again.

Luka Doncic was only able to make ‘Luka Magic’ happen because of Grayson Allen

Grayson Allen could’ve iced the game. Instead, Luka Magic happened.

The entirety of the basketball world is still in awe after Luka Doncic’s incredible game-winning shot against the Grizzlies on Wednesday night.

Game winners are always incredible when they’re just regular shots. But Luka Doncic hit a floating 3-point shot after splitting a double team to win the game.

That just…doesn’t happen. It’s not supposed to happen. No one is supposed to make a shot like that. It’s the type of magic that Luka Doncic has become known for around the NBA.

The thing about this one is that he also probably should never have gotten the chance to.

Yes, Doncic hit this incredible game-winner. But the only reason it won the game is because Grayson Allen missed two free throws down the stretch as a 91% free throw shooter.

Allen had two shots to put the Grizzlies up 5 at the end of the game and ice it. He missed both.

And then, boom. Luka Magic.

People had so many jokes about what happened.

The odds of this happening were just so slim. It just wasn’t supposed to. Here are some numbers from Inpredict that put it in context.

That’s just incredible. I guess this is just what Luka Magic looks like.

The Celtics fight to force OT but fall short in Memphis 132-126

The Celtics fall to Memphis on the road

With Jayson Tatum ruled out due to an illness and Kemba Walker on his back-to-back rest schedule, the Boston Celtics needed contributions from unexpected places to have a chance in Memphis.

The unexpected contribution came from Jeff Teague’s 26 points as Jaylen Brown expectedly led the way with 27 of his own, but while the scrappy Celtics came back to force overtime it was the Grizzlies with the last push for a 132-126 win.

After a solid first half for the shorthanded Celtics led to a five-point Boston lead, Ja Morant and the Grizzlies took over in the third quarter as the young point guard led the way with 9 points in the period.

Memphis secured an eight-point cushion heading into the fourth quarter, but the Celtics would not go away. Trailing by four with under a minute left, it was Marcus Smart time in the clutch. A layup and then a lob to Daniel Theis with seven seconds left tied the game at 117. Morant’s jumper for the win fell short and Boston forced overtime.

For Memphis, the closer in overtime was Dillon Brooks as the Oregon product added to his 24 points with the first bucket of the period and a clutch and-one to create separation.

Boston fought without two starters, but ultimately fell to 21-22 on the year as Memphis improved to 20-20. Next up for the Celtics is a road test against the Milwaukee Bucks on Wednesday.

One of the coolest stories of this NBA season has been the rise of Xavier Tillman. The former Michigan State Basketball star has been breaking out as part of the Memphis Grizzlies, seemingly setting new career-highs with each game and continuing to get more and more recognition as he has helped a Grizzlies team that has two injured stars remain in playoff contention.

The Grizzlies are now 6-6 after Saturday’s win over the Philadelphia 76ers, and this game might have been Tillman’s coming out party for most of the country. Tillman had 15 points, 4 steals, 4 rebounds, and 2 assists against the Sixers, and he also sealed the game after forcing Tobias Harris out of bounds.

Warriors Rewind: Monta Ellis drops 39 points vs. Rudy Gay led Grizzlies in 2010

With no hoops on the schedule, Warriors Wire is rewinding through Golden State’s history for memorable matchups and standout performances.

With no hoops on the calendar, Warriors Wire is rewinding the tape back through Golden State’s history for memorable matchups, standout performances and everything else in between.

With Stephen Curry sidelined early in the 2010 season, Monta Ellis took over the Golden State Warriors offense for a battle with Rudy Gay and the Memphis Grizzlies.

November 3, 2010

After suffering an injury against the Los Angeles Lakers, Curry missed his second consecutive game with a sprained right ankle. Without their sophomore point guard, Keith Smart gave the keys to Ellis in a matchup with the Memphis Grizzlies.

The veteran shooting guard tallied a game-high 39 points on 12-of-26 shooting from the field. After the Grizzlies trimmed Golden State’s first-half lead from 12 to five in the third quarter, Ellis exploded. The veteran shooting guard closed out the game with 17 of his 39 points coming in the fourth quarter.

Rudy Gay traded buckets with Ellis in the fourth quarter, scoring 12 of his 35 points for the Grizzlies late in the game. Yet, it wasn’t enough to complete the comeback.

On top of his impressive scoring display, Ellis tacked on nine rebounds, eight assists and three steals against Memphis.

Behind Ellis, David Lee registered a double-double with 15 points on 5-of-17 shooting with 16 boards. The Florida product added three steals, two assists and a block against Marc Gasol and the Grizzlies.

Without Curry, Dorrell Wright caught fire from long distance in a starting role. Wright splashed 7-of-14 attempts from beyond the arc in 43 minutes against the Grizzlies.

Following his high-scoring performance against the Grizzlies, Ellis notched 39 or more points seven times during his 2010-2011 campaign.

With their win against the Grizzlies, the Warriors moved to 3-1 in the early season.

The NBA bubble’s play-in games work. The league needs to make them permanent

Keep the party going.

Sports are rooted in tradition. They have always been.

These games have been around for decades — some for centuries. And, throughout their time in existence, there have been certain norms and mores that come with them.

But, sometimes, those traditions don’t bring the best out in the sports that we love. Sometimes it’s good to just shake things up. It’s good to make something a little different.

That’s what the NBA has done with their new play-in scenario for the 8th seed in each conference — they’ve made things a little more interesting.

In case you forgot, here’s a quick explainer on how it works. The 9th seed team must be within 4 games of the 8th seed to trigger a play-in scenario for the spot.

Then, that 9th seed must beat the 8th seed twice in a two game series to move into the 8th slot and move on in the playoffs. If they lose once, they’re done.

Over this two week stretch in the NBA’s return, we’ve seen the Trail Blazers, Suns and Spurs all play exceptional basketball to try and move into that spot. It’s been frantic, but also an absolute joy to watch. And we’re going to get some incredible matchups to go with it.

And it’s also exactly why the NBA needs to keep this going for years to come. Let me explain.

It gives us an actual finish to the race for the 8th seed

We’ve seen so many anticlimactic finishes in the race for the 8th seed over the years.

Normally it just ends with one team either losing and mathematically being eliminated or some silly tiebreaker scenario that we all have to spend 15 minutes looking up and doing the math on.

Instead of everyone doing all of that and scoreboard watching during the final game of the season, they just get to play a couple of games against one another and determine who goes to the postseason.

This is so much simpler and so much more fun.

It lessens the incentive to tank

Yes, teams are always going to tank when they’re out of playoff position. That’s the incentive that the NBA’s draft system inherently gives to teams — especially the really bad ones.

The worse you are, the better chance you have of getting a star when the season ends. That’s just how it works. The NBA absolutely hates tanking. How do you get rid of it? Give bad teams something to play for.

That’s what the play-in scenario is — especially for Western Conference teams that would probably be good if they were in the East.

For example, the Suns could’ve tanked their bubble stint away. They were in prime position to move up in the draft lottery, but they were just close enough to the Grizzlies at 8th to make a legitimate run for the 9th seed and trigger the play-in.

Next thing you know, the Devin Booker is hitting shots like this.

Oh, and this.

And now the Suns — winners of seven straight games — are in prime position to trigger a play-in scenario. Without this, they’re playing for nothing.

Finally, it just gives us great basketball

And isn’t that the whole point of this thing? Over the last few weeks, the stars playing for a chance to get the 8th seed have given us so many big moments.

Devin Booker just keeps hitting big shot after big shot. Rudy Gay has come to life for the Spurs. DeMar DeRozan looks like he’s in Toronto again.

Oh, did I mention that Damian Lillard probably earned himself the Bubble MVP off this performance alone?

And the fans have been on the edge of their seats to watch it all. All because of the play-in scenario. Thank the Basketball Gods.

Yes, there are some flaws in this system. The Eastern Conference has given us just about nothing with the Wizards. And the West, generally speaking, is always closer than the East.

And, yes, maybe 4 games is too wide of a range. Maybe it should be closer. But all the league has to do here is make a few tweaks to this new system and keep it moving.

Awful coronavirus circumstances aside, the NBA has found itself a gem. And it would be a total shame to let it fall by the wayside.

Keep the good times rolling, NBA.
