Complete list of backup centers Sixers have employed behind Joel Embiid

Here is a complete list of the backup centers the Philadelphia 76ers have employed behind star big man Joel Embiid.

The Philadelphia 76ers have been one of the top teams in the East since Joel Embiid stepped onto the floor for them in the 2016-17 season. The big fella has been the transcendent star the franchise needed to regain relevancy in the league.

The backup center spot has been a bit of an adventure for the franchise. They have cycled through a lot of different options behind Embiid looking for the right combination on the floor. Some have been duds and others have been solid players.

In Embiid’s seven seasons with the Sixers, Philadelphia has employed a number of backup centers, and it appears as though there will be a new backup in the 2023-24 season, veteran Mo Bamba. It was Paul Reed in 2022-23, but it appears he could get a look at power forward under new coach Nick Nurse.

Here are all the backup centers during the Embiid era:

Every player in Boston Celtics history who wore No. 55

This is every player in Boston’s history who wore the Celtics’ No. 55 jersey for at least one game as of Aug. 2023.

The Boston Celtics have more retired jerseys than any other team in the NBA, but that doesn’t mean the rest of their jerseys have little history of interest tied to them.

In fact, with 17 titles to their name and decades of competitive basketball played in them, their unretired jersey numbers pack in some of the most history not hanging from the rafters of any team in the league. To that end, we have launched our accounting of that history, with every player in every jersey worn by more than one Celtics player in the storied franchise’s history accounted for.

Today’s installment focuses on the 13 players who wore No. 55 over the years as of Aug. 2023.

Redraft of 2010 class sees five Boston Celtics alumni shift spots

Another five Celtics alumni ended up seeing their draft stock shift considerably with the benefit of hindsight lifting their fortunes.

As Hoops Hype’s Frank Urbina and Raul Barrigon keep busy reassessing the draft orders of the last several decades over the last few years, there are always a number of Boston Celtics alumni on the move in their re-drafts as a result.

In the H/H duo’s reassessment of the NBA’s 2010 draft class, a total of five Boston alumni ended up seeing their draft stock shift considerably with the benefit of hindsight lifting their fortunes. And while they won’t see any pay raises or anything else of that sort given the fictitious nature of such an exercise, it’s also nice to see this duo get their flowers, too.

Let’s take a look at which Celtics alumni landed where.

On this day: triple OT win vs. Suns in G5 of ’76 Finals; Chaney drafted

The Boston Celtics outlasted the Phoenix Suns in a 128-126 triple-overtime Game 5 of the 1976 NBA Finals.

On this day in Boston Celtics history, the team survived a 128-126 triple-overtime slugfest with the Phoenix Suns in Game 5 of the 1976 NBA Finals for what was at that time the longest Finals game in league history.

Point guard Jo Jo White of the Celtics led Boston with 33 points, and forward John Havlicek would nail a 15-foot bank shot to send the game to its second overtime. At the end of that extra period, Phoenix forward Gar Heard scored a buzzer-beating trey to force the third extra period, with Heard setting a record for minutes played in a Finals game at 61 minutes. That record would stand until 1993 when the Suns and Chicago Bulls would go to triple-overtime and Phoenix’s Kevin Johnson playing 62 minutes.

Boston would go on to win the series two days later and secure their 13th banner.

Six Boston Celtics alumni changing places in 2010 NBA re-draft

Six Celtics alums saw their draft position shift up or down the order they were actually taken in all those years ago.

Once again, Frank Urbina and Raul Barrigon of our sister site Hoops Hype have another re-draft, this time around of the 2010 NBA draft. And as has been the case in each of their prior endeavors to, as they put it, reorder the draft the “way it should have been,” there have been a number of Boston Celtics on the move in their revaluation of the draft class from that year.

In fact, a total of six Celtics alums saw their draft position shift up or down the order they were actually taken in all those years ago in a relatively thin cohort when it came to star power.

Let’s dive into which former Celtics were re-drafted where.

A list of the backup centers Sixers have employed behind Joel Embiid

Here is a list of the backup centers the Philadelphia 76ers have employed during the Joel Embiid era.

The Philadelphia 76ers have been one of the top teams in the East since Joel Embiid stepped onto the floor for them in the 2016-17 season. The big fella has been the transcendent star the franchise needed to regain relevancy in the league.

The biggest issue has been the backup center spot. The Sixers have not settled on one guy who can give positive, productive minutes behind Embiid so the big fella can rest.

In Embiid’s six seasons with the Sixers, Philadelphia has employed a number of backup centers, and it appears as though there will be a new backup in the 2022-23 season, young Paul Reed.

Ex- Boston big man Greg Monroe inks 10-day with Jazz; Former Celtics forward Semi Ojeleye cut by Clips

It’s been a mixed bag for Celtics alumni in the week’s NBA transactions.

It has been a bit of mixed bag of results in terms of transactions for Boston Celtics alumni recently with former Celtics forward Semi Ojeleye being cut by the Los Angeles Clippers per Celtics Blog’s Keith Smith, while onetime Boston big man Greg Monroe managed to get himself signed to a 10-day deal with the Utah Jazz according to The Athletic’s Shams Charania.

Ojeleye and Boston parted ways this past offseason, with the Southern Methodist University product signing a deal with the Milwaukee Bucks to start the season, while it has been a bit longer since Monroe last played for the Celtics, his second of two stints ending in the latter days of the 2018-19 NBA season.

The Georgetown product has been averaging 5.5 points, 5.2 rebounds, and 1.4 assists per game this season in short stints with the Milwaukee Bucks, Minnesota Timberwolves, and Washington Wizards.

Ojeleye faired poorly in Milwaukee this season, recording just 2.9 boards and points apiece per game with the Bucks, but looked like he might have found a home as a deep rotation player with the Clippers, putting up 4.1 points and 1.4 rebounds per contest in the 10 games he appeared in for L.A.

Former Celtic Greg Monroe playing with Minnesota made NBA history

Former Boston Celtics center Greg Monroe signed a 10-day deal with Minnesota Monday and made some history when he checked in.

Former Boston Celtics and new Minnesota Timberwolves center Greg Monroe made history by signing a 10-day deal with the team Monday. His 25 minutes played Monday marked the 541st player to play in the NBA this season, a new record despite most teams playing around only 34 games thus far, according to ESPN.

Monroe, 31, put in an honest shift against the Celtics, with 11 points, nine rebounds and six assists off the bench. He signed with Minnesota after playing 12 games in the G League for the Capital City Go-Go. He hadn’t touched an NBA court since 2019 before signing up to play for the T-Wolves earlier this week.

A host of league veterans and young hopefuls have signed short-term deals with teams to spell a rise in COVID-19 cases over the past few weeks.

Former Celtic Greg Monroe signs 10-day with Minnesota Timberwolves ahead of matchup

Former Boston Celtic center Greg Monroe has signed a short-term deal with the Minnesota Timberwolves, shortly before the two teams face off.

Former Boston Celtic and longtime Milwaukee Buck Greg Monroe has signed a 10-day contract with the Minnesota Timberwolves ahead of the Celtics matchup with the Wolves. He is one of many veterans being scooped up by teams as the NBA is dealing with a rise in COVID-19 cases in many organizations. The two teams face off at 8 p.m. eastern at TD Garden Monday.

Monroe spent parts of two seasons with the Celtics, playing a total of 28 games between 2017-18 and 2018-19 — the last year he logged NBA minutes until now. In his time in Boston, Monroe averaged 9.7 points and six rebounds per game off the bench. He has also played for five other organizations, in addition to Minnesota, spending five seasons with the Detroit Pistons.

Monroe has played 12 games for the Capital City Go-Go, G League affiliate of the Washington Wizards, this season. Monroe averaged 10.4 points and 8.8 rebounds per game in the G League this season.
