On this day: 12 am Milkman’s Special; Wolkowyski cut; Crawford trade

On this day in Celtics history, Boston played a game starting at midnight, cut Ruben Wolkowyski, and traded for Jordan Crawford.

On this day in Boston Celtics history in 1952, the Celtics tipped off against the (then) Fort. Wayne (Indiana) Pistons (now, Detroit) at midnight in a contest that had been billed as the “Milkman’s Special” in an attempt to sell the event’s late start time as a plus.

The name Milkman’s Special alludes to the very early (or late, depending on your point of view) hours kept in that now-archaic profession. It was a fitting one for a contest that began after a late-night Ice Follies skating exhibition held at the old Boston Garden. The Celtics would win the affair 88-67, with Boston legend Bob Cousy leading the team with 24 points.

Big man “Easy” Ed Macaulay also added 15 points, “Bones” McKinney a dozen, and Chuck Cooper 10 more.

On this day: Crawford, Pinkney born; G. Williams, Edwards, Watt debut

On this day, Jordan Crawford and Kevinn Pinkney were born and a number of Celtics made their debut.

On this day in Boston Celtics history, shooting guard Jordan Crawford was born in Detroit, Michigan in 1988. Crawford played collegiately with the Indiana Hoosiers and the Xavier Musketeers, having been drafted 27th overall by the (then) New Jersey Nets (now, Brooklyn). He would not play for that club, however, his rights having been traded to the Atlanta Hawks later that summer.

Crawford would play with Atlanta and the Washington Wizards before he was traded to the Celtics for Leandro Barbosa and Jason Collins in February of 2013. He would begin his second season with the team as Boston’s starting point guard with Rajon Rondo out injured.

As a result, Crawford would start in 35 of the 39 games he played with the Celtics that season.

Every player in Boston Celtics history who wore No. 27

Today’s installment focuses on the 12 players who wore No. 27 over the years as of August 2023.

The Boston Celtics have more retired jerseys than any other team in the NBA, but that doesn’t mean the rest of their jerseys have little history of interest tied to them.

In fact, with 17 titles to their name and decades of competitive basketball played in them, their unretired jersey numbers pack in some of the most history not hanging from the rafters of any team in the league. To that end, we have launched our accounting of that history, with every player in every jersey worn by more than one Celtics player in the storied franchise’s history accounted for.

Today’s installment focuses on the 12 players who wore No. 27 over the years as of August 2023.

Redraft of 2010 class sees five Boston Celtics alumni shift spots

Another five Celtics alumni ended up seeing their draft stock shift considerably with the benefit of hindsight lifting their fortunes.

As Hoops Hype’s Frank Urbina and Raul Barrigon keep busy reassessing the draft orders of the last several decades over the last few years, there are always a number of Boston Celtics alumni on the move in their re-drafts as a result.

In the H/H duo’s reassessment of the NBA’s 2010 draft class, a total of five Boston alumni ended up seeing their draft stock shift considerably with the benefit of hindsight lifting their fortunes. And while they won’t see any pay raises or anything else of that sort given the fictitious nature of such an exercise, it’s also nice to see this duo get their flowers, too.

Let’s take a look at which Celtics alumni landed where.

Six Boston Celtics alumni changing places in 2010 NBA re-draft

Six Celtics alums saw their draft position shift up or down the order they were actually taken in all those years ago.

Once again, Frank Urbina and Raul Barrigon of our sister site Hoops Hype have another re-draft, this time around of the 2010 NBA draft. And as has been the case in each of their prior endeavors to, as they put it, reorder the draft the “way it should have been,” there have been a number of Boston Celtics on the move in their revaluation of the draft class from that year.

In fact, a total of six Celtics alums saw their draft position shift up or down the order they were actually taken in all those years ago in a relatively thin cohort when it came to star power.

Let’s dive into which former Celtics were re-drafted where.

Ex-Boston Celtics guard Jordan Crawford to sign with Bahrain’s Manama Club

The Michigan native played 39 games for the Celtics, starting 35 of them, and averaged 13.7 points, 3.1 rebounds, 5.7 assists, and just under a steal per game with the team.

Another alumnus of the Boston Celtics has found themselves a new home, with HoopsHype’s Alberto De Roa reporting that former Celtics guard Jordan Crawford will be playing for the Bahraini Basketball Association’s Manama Club for the coming 2022-23 season.

Crawford, a Detroit native who played his college ball with both Indiana and Xavier University, was picked up with the 27th overall pick of the 2010 NBA draft by the (then) New Jersey (now, Brooklyn) Nets, but would be dealt to the Atlanta Hawks, where he would play the first 16 games of his career. Crawford would be dealt again, this time to the Washington Wizards.

The Xavier product would spend parts of 3 seasons with the Wizards before he was dealt yet again to the Celtics in 2013 for Leandro Barbosa and Jason Collins.

The Michigan native played 39 games for the Celtics, starting 35 of them, and averaged 13.7 points, 3.1 rebounds, 5.7 assists, and just under a steal per game with the team before he would be traded again, this time with MarShon Brooks to the Golden State Warriors for Joel Anthony and draft assets.
