Commanders make interesting roster move ahead of Week 15

The Commanders make roster moves ahead of Week 15.

The Washington Commanders made roster moves ahead of Sunday’s game against the New Orleans Saints. That’s typical ahead of gameday, as it allows teams to elevate players from the practice squad to the 53-man roster.

One move was expected. Washington placed wide receiver Noah Brown on injured reserve and activated receiver Jamison Crowder. Brown injured his kidney two weeks ago in a win over Tennessee. Head coach Dan Quinn called the injury significant but said Brown would be fine long-term.

Crowder has missed most of the season with a calf injury. He’ll likely serve as the top punt returner ahead of Olamide Zaccheaus.

The most interesting move the Commanders made on Saturday was elevating kicker Greg Joseph to the main roster. Joseph, along with defensive tackle Carl Davis, was elevated.

Washington added the veteran kicker this week when Zane Gonzalez landed on the injury report with a left foot injury. Gonzalez has been the Commanders’ kicker in three of their last four games. He was signed last month when Austin Seibert dealt with a hip injury. After a brief return, Washington placed Seibert on IR.

Joseph’s elevation means the Commanders will carry two kickers on the roster. This may be a “just-in-case” move, and the team wanted to have Joseph available if Gonzalez can’t go.

This is the latest kicker setback for the Commanders. Washington has signed seven kickers this year, beginning with Brandon McManus in March before releasing him in June.

Commanders sign another kicker to the practice squad

Just in case, the Commanders add another kicker.

It’s been a frustrating year for the Washington Commanders and the kicking position. With Austin Seibert on injured reserve, his replacement, Zane Gonzalez, popped up on the injury report this week with a left foot injury.

So, on Friday, Washington, unlike other teams, is preparing for the event that Gonzalez isn’t 100% for Sunday’s game against the Saints, signing veteran kicker Greg Joseph to the practice squad.

The Commanders will decide on Gonzalez’s status by Saturday afternoon so that they’ll know if they need to elevate Joseph to the 53-man roster for Sunday.

Washington’s kicking problems began in June when veteran Brandon McManus was released due to an off-field issue. The Commanders had just signed McManus in March. They signed multiple kickers throughout OTAs and training camp before sending a conditional draft pick to the Browns for Cade York. York struggled in the Week 1 loss to the Buccaneers and was released. Washington signed Seibert, who was excellent until he suffered a right hip injury that cost him two games.

When he returned in Week 12, he missed a field goal and two extra points, going on IR the next day. Gonzalez, who filled in for the two games Seibert missed, was signed to the 53-man roster ahead of Week 13.

Joseph, 30, has kicked for several NFL teams, enjoying his greatest success with the Vikings from 2021-23. He kicked in six games for the Giants this season in place of the injured Graham Gano. Joseph also spent time with the Packers and Lions this season.

In some good news, Gonzalez practiced fully on Thursday and Friday, but was listed as questionable for the game.

To make room for Joseph, the Commanders released wide receiver Michael Strachan from the practice squad.

Giants place kicker Greg Joseph on IR, elevated kicker Jude McAtamney

The New York Giants have placed kicker Greg Joseph on IR, elevated kicker Jude McAtamney, and made several other roster moves.

The New York Giants have placed kicker Greg Joseph on injured reserve (IR) with an abdomen issue after he popped up on Friday’s injury report.

Joseph is the second Giants kicker to land on IR this season, joining Graham Gano, who ironically suffered a hamstring injury during a Week 2 game against the Washington Commanders — Big Blue’s Sunday opponent.

In Gano’s absence, Joseph made 13 of his 16 field goal attempts and all six of his point-after attempts.

With the need for a replacement, the Giants elevated Irish-born kicker Jude McAtamney from their practice squad. He came to the team via the International Player Pathway Program and is on a roster exemption.

For McAtamney, this is his first standard elevation.

Additionally, having run out of elevations, the Giants signed linebacker Tomon Fox, who primarily plays special teams, to their 53-man roster. His spot on the practice squad was filled by fullback Jakob Johnson, who was once again re-signed.

Giants’ Greg Joseph, Jamie Gillan out vs. Commanders

The New York Giants will be without kicker Greg Joseph and punter Jamie Gillan in Week 9 against the Washington Commanders.

The New York Giants wrapped up their week of practice on Friday afternoon in East Rutherford and things ended on a better note than they started.

Despite a massive injury report that grew throughout the week, every player participated in practice on Friday with the exception of punter Jamie Gillan and kicker Greg Joseph.

Gillan was ruled out of Sunday’s game against the Washington Commanders before the team even took the field.

Joseph was a new addition to the injury report and with veteran Graham Gano on IR, the Giants will have to add a new kicker over the next 48 hours.

Meanwhile, rookie running back Tyrone Tracy Jr. cleared concussion protocol, and head coach Brian Daboll said he would play in Week 9.

Giants likely to stick with kicker Greg Joseph in Week 7

If Graham Gano does not return from injured reserve this week, the New York Giants are likely to stick with kicker Greg Joseph in Week 7.

New York Giants head coach Brian Daboll says the team will stick with kicker Greg Joseph if Graham Gano does not return from injured reserve (IR) this week.

“I’d say we’d stay with Greg,” he told reporters on Monday.

Joseph missed two field goals in the fourth quarter on Sunday night — from 47 and 45 yards. Both kicks sailed wide to the left.

“He’s done pretty good since he’s been here,” said Daboll. “And then, we missed two of them.”

Gano has been out since suffering a hamstring injury on the first play of the Giants’ loss to the Washington Commanders in Week 2. He had missed the second half of last season with a knee injury.

Daboll said he’ll speak to the medical teams this week about Gano’s status but if he can’t go, there isn’t likely to be a kicker change.

Joesph had hit eight consecutive field goal attempts before Sunday night. His last 10 kickoffs have all gone for touchbacks and he is perfect on his seven extra point attempts.

Giants will start kicker Greg Joseph vs. Cowboys in Week 4

New York Giants head coach Brian Daboll, after expressing uncertainty earlier in the week, says kicker Greg Joseph will start in Week 4.

New York Giants head coach Brian Daboll said that Greg Joseph would be the team’s kicker for this Thursday’s game against the Dallas Cowboys.

Daboll was noncommittal about the role after Sunday’s win in Cleveland against the Browns.

“Yeah, it’s going to be Greg,” Daboll told reporters on Tuesday.

Joseph was signed off the Detroit Lions practice squad last week after the team placed kicker Graham Gano (hamstring) on injured reserve (IR).

Joseph beat out a group of other veteran kickers to get the job and then staved off Giants’ practice squadder Jude McAntamney.

Joseph lined up for one field goal last week in Cleveland, a 48-yard attempt late in the game and pushed it wide right. He converted all three of his point after attempts.

Giants’ Brian Daboll noncommittal on Greg Joseph in Week 4

New York Giants head coach Brian Daboll refused to commit to Greg Joseph as the team’s starting kicker in Week 4 against Dallas.

The New York Giants traveled to Ohio on Sunday to face the Cleveland Browns and earned a much-needed and season-changing win.

Part of their struggle this season is not having a reliable kicker for the second year in a row after placing Graham Gano on injured reserve (IR) with a groin injury.

In Gano’s place, the Giants brought in kicker Greg Joesph.

Joseph is in his sixth year in the NFL and has played for the Browns, Tennessee Titans, and Minnesota Vikings before joining the Giants. He managed to make three extra points but missed a 48-yard field goal in the fourth quarter on Sunday.

Gano was injured midway through last season as well and the kicking game was a huge struggle. Right now, the Giants want to avoid a repeat of that, but head coach Brian Daboll is noncommittal on who will kick this week.

“We’ll sit down and talk personnel stuff later today,” he told reporters on Monday. “You’d like him obviously to make that kick, he didn’t. But he’s done a good job when he was here in practice and we’ll talk about what we’re going to do here.”

When asked to clarify that Joseph would be the kicker on Thursday, Daboll said, “I didn’t say that.”

It’s not ideal to be in an unknown situation with kickers. We’ll see how this unfolds over the next couple of days, but it’s a short week so Daboll and his staff need to nail this down as soon as possible.

The Giants sign away the Lions’ practice squad kicker

The Giants sign away the Lions’ practice squad kicker, Greg Joseph, after New York’s kicker suffered an injury in their Week 2 loss

Greg Joseph, we hardly knew ye…

Technically, no one in Detroit outside of the Lions themselves really knew Joseph in his brief stay with the team. The Lions signed Joseph, a veteran kicker, to the practice squad just last Wednesday.

Now, Joseph is heading to New York.

The Giants are signing away Joseph from Detroit’s practice squad to their active 53-man roster. New York came up with a dire need after regular kicker Graham Gano injured his hamstring on the opening kickoff in New York’s 21-18 loss to Washington, a game in which the Commanders kicked a franchise-record seven field goals (all by one-time Lions kicker Austin Seibert).

For the Lions, first-year kicker Jake Bates remains perfect on the season in all placekicks and also has booted eight touchbacks in nine kickoffs.

Detroit now has one opening on the practice squad. Tuesday tends to be the day when the Lions work out potential signees, so that spot might not stay open for long.

Lions sign former Packers K Greg Joseph to practice squad

The Lions signed former Packers K Greg Joseph to the team’s practice squad on Wednesday.

The Detroit Lions signed former Green Bay Packers kicker Greg Joseph to the team’s practice squad on Wednesday.

Joseph, who was the kicker of the Minnesota Vikings for the last three seasons, spent one day on the Packers’ initial 53-man roster before being replaced by Brayden Narveson, who was claimed off waivers from the Tennessee Titans following final cuts. Joseph competed with Anders Carlson, the incumbent, for the Packers’ kicking job to start 2024, but both struggled with consistency and ended up losing the job in Green Bay.

Oddly enough, the Lions had both Joseph and Carlson in for a workout on Tuesday. Detroit picked Joseph over Carlson for a spot on the practice squad.

Jake Bates, the Lions’ current kicker, made both of his field goals and extra point attempts during Week 1. It’s possible Joseph will be more of a mentor to Bates, a rookie who excelled in the UFL.

Speaking of rookies, Narveson made 3-of-4 field goals and both extra points in the opener for the Packers. He connected on three field goals under 40 yards and missed from 43 yards out. Narveson was one of just five kickers to miss a field goal attempt in Week 1.

Joseph made 24-of-30 field goals (80%) for the Vikings last season. His field goal percentage ranked 28th out of 33 qualifying kickers in 2023.

Lions add DT Kyle Peko to the active roster in series of roster moves

Peko played over 30 snaps in Detroit’s Week 1 win as a practice squad promotion

Welcome to the active 53-man Detroit Lions roster, Kyle Peko.

The veteran defensive tackle was signed to the Lions roster from the team’s practice squad ahead of Wednesday’s practice session. Peko replaces fellow DT Chris Smith on the roster. Smith was waived earlier this week and is now back on the practice squad.

Peko played 37 snaps in Detroit’s Week 1 win over the Rams, recording one tackle as a practice squad promotion.

The move to swap Peko and Smith in Week 2 was almost certainly a salary cap maneuver designed to keep Peko’s veteran contract form being fully guaranteed. All vested vets who are on the Week 1 active 53-man roster have their deals secured. By waiting a week, it saves the Lions some long-term money.

Detroit also made the practice squad signing of kicker Greg Joseph official. And with that, the Lions roster is once again at capacity.
