Aaron Rodgers will likely avoid suspension, return to play Seahawks

Aaron Rodgers will likely avoid suspension, return to play Seahawks.

In the aftermath of Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers testing positive for COVID-19 and being ruled out for Week 9, speculation arose as to whether he would receive a suspension from the NFL and potentially stay out for Green Bay’s Week 10 contest against the Seattle Seahawks. Rodgers claimed to be “immunized” from COVID-19 before the season but recently admitted in an interview with Pat McAfee that he is unvaccinated

However, NFL insider Jay Glazer reported that the league issues fines to players and teams for violating COVID-19 protocol but does not suspend them for it.

It appears that a massive fine would be the worst-case scenario for the Packers’ veteran quarterback, and he will be able to return from the COVID-19/Reserve list in time to play Seattle if he remains asymptomatic, as his 10-day isolation period will end the day before the game, on November 13.

The Seahawks are currently on their bye week sitting at 3-5 and seek to build on a 31-7 thrashing of the lowly Jacksonville Jaguars last Sunday. There is a chance that Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson could return to the field for Week 10, but turning the season around will be an uphill battle for Seattle regardless of their franchise quarterback’s status.

Green Bay vs Arizona Game Preview

Why Green Bay Will Win

Nothing stops.

More on the Green Bay wide receiver issues in a moment, but there are more than enough weapons to keep the O going and it starts with the ground attack.

Arizona might be doing a strong job overall defensively – especially taking the ball away – it’s possible to run on the group. Houston couldn’t do it last week, but Cleveland was fine until Kareem Hunt got hurt in the blowout Cardinal win two weeks ago.

Before that, San Francisco powered up a bit, the Rams were okay, and the Jaguars and Vikings both went off on an Arizona D allowing a league-high five yards per carry.

Green Bay doesn’t run a ton – there’s no reason to with Aaron Rodgers – but it’s effective when it does. The combination of Aaron Jones and AJ Dillon should get a workout because …

NFL Expert Picks, CFN Week 8

Why Arizona Will Win

Do the Packers have any receivers left?

Yes, they do, and Rodgers will have plenty of options to utilize, but Davante Adams and Allen Lazard are out after being put on the COVID list.

The bigger problem is a Green Bay run defense that’s been ripped apart lately, giving up over 100 yards in each of the last three games with Washington going off last week.

The Packers allow close to five yards per attempt, and now they get the Arizona ground game that has a nice mix of James Conner, Chase Edmonds, and Kyler Murray each getting their chances to handle the work.

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 9

What’s Going To Happen

Oh poor Green Bay … it’s missing a few key receivers, so it might as well not even show up.

Uh-huh. Get ready for No. 12 to put on a show to keep up in a fun show.

Both teams take the ball away, neither one has a turnover problem, and both teams are explosive enough to come up with several wild mood swings as the game goes on.

Both teams will also try using their ground games early on, and then the quarterbacks will take over.

Murray won’t have to do as much as Rodgers, but he’ll lead the way to a game-winning drive – the running attack will have a lot to do with that, too – to close out a phenomenal game to kickoff the weekend.

Washington vs Green Bay Game Preview

Why Washington Will Win

The Football Team can get into the backfield and it’s great at taking the ball away.

It’s been cursed by its own giveaways and mistakes, but to pull this off on the road, the defensive pressure has to be there from the start and the turnovers have to come after generating five in the last two games.

Green Bay doesn’t give the ball up, but if it somehow comes out flat and gives it away three times like it did in the opener against New Orleans, there’s a shot. Of course …

Week 7 CFN NFL Expert Picks

Why Green Bay Will Win

Aaron Rodgers knows all of that, he’s going to get the ball out of his hands in a hurry, and he should be able to torch a Football Team secondary that’s allowed the most touchdown passes of any in the league.

Washington is last in the NFL in overall pass defense – even with the decent pass rush from Chase Young and the line – and Rodgers will feast. The Green Bay defense has been solid enough to keep Taylor Heinicke from turning all of his yards into points.

What’s Going To Happen

Washington’s defense is having issues.

No one is giving up more points – the Football Team has allowed 30 or more in each of the last four games – and the fun isn’t going to stop now.

Green Bay will come out fast, Washington will press a bit, and then the turnovers will start happening to make things even worse.

Jaylon Smith officially signs with Packers

How is this for a landing spot?

Former Notre Dame star Jaylon Smith was released earlier this week by the Dallas Cowboys but wasn’t out of work long.  After speculation Wednesday had him connected to the Green Bay Packers, Smith officially signed with the organization on Thursday.

Smith will wear number nine for the green and gold and make his Packers debut on Sunday as Green Bay travels to take on the Cincinnati Bengals.

Related: Links between Notre Dame football and Packers are plentiful

Smith had played in all 68 regular season Cowboys games since returning from his brutal knee injury that he suffered in the 2016 Fiesta Bowl against Ohio State.

Twitter mourns the death of Auburn legend, NFL Hall of Famer Kevin Greene

Auburn legend and NFL Hall of Famer Kevin Greene passed away at the age of 58 on Monday.

[jwplayer UVHdnNNC]

Former Auburn linebacker, NFL Hall of Fame legend, and WCW veteran Kevin Greene passed away on Monday at the age of 58.

Greene walked on Auburn’s football team in 1983 and led the team with 11 sacks in his senior season. The Los Angeles Rams drafted Greene in the fifth round of the 1985 NFL Draft which marked the beginning of his successful 15-year career. He played for five teams from 1985-1999 and earned NFL Defensive Player of the Year honors in 1996 while playing for the Carolina Panthers. Greene finished his career ranked third all-time among NFL sack leaders. He was a 5-time Pro Bowler and a 3-time First-Team All-pro.

Greene was inducted to the NFL Hall of Fame in 2016. In honor of his induction, NFL Films released a program devoted to the Class of 2016 titled, “A Football Life.” During this, late Auburn head coach Pat Dye reminisces about the first time he saw Kevin Greene:

“I see this guy that’s winning every race and winning every competition, and he looks like a Greek god. I called one of the coaches. I said, ‘Who in the hell is that? They said, ‘That’s Kevin Greene.’ I said, ‘Where’d he come from?'”

Dye continued to say,

“He had the physical tools and ability, and he came with a vengeance,” Dye said. “But the thing that set him apart is what he had inside of him. He played the game with every molecule in his body.”

The news of Greene’s passing came as a shock to the sports world today. Fans, players, coaches, colleagues, and friends all took to social media to share tributes as well as mourn the loss of a legend.

I echo the sentiments of many here. What a player, what a man, and what a loss. Gone way too soon. RIP Mr. Greene. Our condolences go out to all of his family and friends.

Marcedes Lewis on getting over the Jags cutting him: ‘I didn’t understand it for a long time’

Marcedes Lewis says he treat Sunday’s game against his old team (the Jags) like any other game and that there is no animosity on his end

One of the most disappointing moments to happen at the hands of the Jacksonville Jaguars’ current front office is how they handled the release of former tight end Marcedes Lewis. Back in 2018, the team abruptly moved on from the veteran without warning and the fans let it be known they weren’t happy with how it was handled in addition to Lewis.

Fast-forward to present-day and Lewis will now suit up against the Jags with the Green Bay Packers Sunday, which is going to present an odd feeling to Jags fans. However, it may not be as awkward to Lewis who said he has no hard feelings and has moved on this week, although it admittedly took a year to get over how things were handled.

Lewis has been open about wanting to retire a Jag despite how things went. At the end of the day, he’s well aware that Duval is where it all began and is also the place where his best days came as a player. However, that still doesn’t mean he doesn’t deserve a shot at redemption against the franchise that hasn’t had a lot of good luck since his release and maybe even hauls in a touchdown on them Sunday.

While with the Packers Lewis has been primarily used as a blocker, but does have 32 yards and two touchdowns on the season. With that being the case, don’t be shocked to see Aaron Rodgers take a shot at him in the red zone, especially with the issues the team has had in coverage under coordinator Todd Wash.

Notre Dame, Green Bay Packers ‘Golden Boy’ Paul Hornung has died at 84

Sad news today Notre Dame and Green Bay Packers legend Paul Hornung has died at the age of 84.

The only man to ever win Heisman Trophy on a team with a losing record has died as Paul Hornung, a football legend at both Notre Dame and with the Green Bay Packers passed away Friday at the age of 84.

Hornung starred as a three-sport athlete at Flaget High School in Louisville before attending Notre Dame on a football scholarship.

“The Golden Boy” as he was known during his playing days, threw for 12 touchdowns and 1696 yards during his time at Notre Dame.  In 1956 his efforts not only at quarterback but on defense and special teams helped him win the Heisman Trophy despite the Irish going just 2-8 on the year.  To this day Hornung is the only player to win the award while playing on a losing team.

Hornung would go on to be selected to the College Football Hall of Fame in 1985 and since 2010 The Paul Hornung Award has been given out to “The most versatile player in college football” each season.

Hornung graduated from Notre Dame in 1957 with a degree in business and became the first overall pick in the ’57 NFL Draft as the Green Bay Packers selected him.  Along with Vince Lombardi and the Packers dynasty of the sixties, Hornung would win four NFL Championships and twice be selected as a first-team All-Pro in what would end up a Hall of Fame career as he was enshrined in Canton in the 1986 class.

Hornung was a superstar in the sport but also found his way into various different controversies over the years.  He was involved in a betting ring alongside former Detroit Lions star Alex Karras that left the two suspended for the 1963 season.

In a 2004 radio interview Hornung also declared that Notre Dame  “can’t stay as strict as we are as far as the academic structure is concerned because we’ve got to get the black athletes. We must get the black athletes if we’re going to compete.”

Those comments understandably drew harsh criticism nationwide.

Hornung is survived by his wife of 41 years, Angela.

We’ll have more on this story as it develops but our thoughts are with all of those effected by the loss of a football legend.

McCarthy still coaching Cowboys from home in Green Bay

The new coach is eager to hit the field, but for now, he’s doing the job in Dallas virtually, from within the shadows of Lambeau Field.

Even in the weirdest NFL offseason in living memory, here’s one of the more surreal notions, one that could never have been imagined even just a few short months ago: The head coach of the Dallas Cowboys is doing the job from his home… in Green Bay, Wisconsin.

Mike McCarthy, who spent the entire 2019 season bunkered in with his family and strategizing pretend gameplans with a collection of former assistants, was hired and introduced- in person– at the Star in Frisco in January. But the shuttering of team facilities and stay-at-home guidelines in the wake of COVID-19 meant that the man trying to lead the Cowboys to their next Lombardi Trophy would have to start that journey within the shadows of Lambeau Field.

“I have been with my family the whole time, except for maybe the first 10 days of the pandemic,” McCarthy said Wednesday in a conference call with reporters.

While the longtime coach is eager to get back on a field with real football players, his job thus far has involved overseeing preparations rather than actual practices.

“We’ve really just hunkered down and tried to focus on the things we can control,” he went on. “And as a staff, we’re planning for a full training camp and we’re also planning for a training camp in Oxnard, we’re planning for a training camp in Frisco. We spent an enormous amount of time in the planning phase because it is our first camp together.”

But, as is the case with everyone else working from home, that planning phase has relied heavily on virtual meetings and internet technology. And, as has been the case with most, there have been limitations, making it anything but business as usual.

McCarthy has yet to physically stand in front of the entire Cowboys team, and he joked that he doesn’t even have the setup for “90 boxes” on his at-home computer screen. As a coach in his first year with a new team, McCarthy should have gotten a one-week head start in live meetings and practice sessions with his staff and roster under normal circumstances. That bonus time was lost to the virus, but even now, McCarthy is reluctant to say he’s behind schedule, possibly because every coaching staff around the league is suddenly in the same boat.

“You really don’t have a true comparable, the 56-year-old McCarthy said. “But I think it’s obvious to think if we started April 6 like we normally would as a first-year program, we would be in a different spot than we are here today.”

The coaching staff started by meeting first with players in small positional groups, with a focus on terminology and overall philosophy. McCarthy has been touching base on a nightly basis with offensive coordinator Kellen Moore to decide how much to throw at the players in the virtual classroom setting. Full offensive and defensive meetings only got underway this week to start putting those individual pieces together into a cohesive system.

To be sure, this 2020 method is not the traditional way of installing a playbook.

“We just kind of flipped some things and the order of how we would normally do them,” McCarthy offered. “It was more done with a focus on productivity, not just the detail but also get the volume of what we want to get done. Because our volume is obviously higher than a normal year because it’s our first year. That’s why we went with that approach.”

A large volume of new Xs and Os, delivered in a compressed timeframe and during highly unusual days where everything is more difficult than it should be. It’s a big ask. McCarthy credits his roster of guys already in Dallas with making it possible.

“I am excited because this is probably going to be the most experienced team that I’ve coached, so we’ll rely on that,” McCarthy said. “I think if we were going to push to one side or the other, we’d definitely push on the side of the volume because of our veteran experience.”

When faced with uncertainty, people with experience tend to prepare themselves for everything… because they know anything can happen.

“This challenge has clearly made everyone- especially myself- take a step back,” the coach went on. “Don’t react as fast as you may have in normal times. I think you’ve really got to trust your instincts, the awareness and your experience in this particular time as far as how we install and initiate the development and growth of our program.”

While the league is moving toward allowing teams to start in-person practicing again, it’s still a game of wait-and-see. So McCarthy’s coaching-from-home stint goes on at least a little while longer. The rest of the world may be sick and tired of self-isolating after two months and change; McCarthy’s been doing it now for almost a year and half.

“I think we’ve all been taught a whole different level of patience,” McCarthy said. “I’m anxious to get back, frankly. My family is probably anxious for me to get back… It’s time, I know, for me to get back. I spend a lot of time looking into a camera and talking. I am ready to get back and get to work in person.”

NFL Draft: Kmet First Round to Packers in Mel Kiper Jr.’s Final Mock

Kiper released his final mock draft ahead of the 2020 NFL Draft which starts tonight.  His one Notre Dame player going in round one is Cole Kmet, who he has the Green Bay Packers selecting with the 30th overall pick.

Nobody is better known for being an NFL Draft expert than Mel Kiper, Jr.  He’s been doing it seemingly as long as anyone in the business and although not always correct (nobody is really ever close to being so), he’s got insight.

Kiper released his final mock draft ahead of the 2020 NFL Draft which starts tonight.  His one Notre Dame player going in round one is Cole Kmet, who he has the Green Bay Packers selecting with the 30th overall pick.

“Kmet is the only tight end with a chance to go in Round 1, and the Packers could get Aaron Rodgers some help in a pass-catcher and blocker. Did you know that Rodgers was the most recent skill position player Green Bay picked in the first round? And that was 2005. If Tee Higgins is still on the board, he could be another option.” – Mel Kiper, Jr. (April 23, 2020)

If you’re Kmet you can’t ask for a better situation to walk into than this one, even if the Arlington Heights, Illinois native did grow up a Chicago Bears fan.  He’d be set up with as talented of quarterback as the game has ever seen in Aaron Rodgers and have the coverage/game plan dictating Davonte Adams on his side as well.

This would be a move at Fighting Irish Wire that would leave myself, Geoffrey and Michael likely all a little uneasy, but would thrill the hell out of Jeff.

2020 Horizon League College Basketball Tournament odds and betting futures

Analyzing the 2020 Horizon League Tournament odds and futures, with sports betting picks, tips and best bets.

Then there were four remaining in the Horizon League race for a dance ticket to the 2020 NCAA Tournament.

The Wright State Raiders, Northern Kentucky Norse, Green Bay Phoenix and Illinois-Chicago Flames are the last four standing, but the oddsmakers are really considering it a two-horse race. Stranger things have happened, however, and that’s what makes the craziness of March college hoops so exciting.

Below, we look at the futures odds to win the Horizon League, which is down to Monday’s semifinals after featuring first-round games March 3 and the quarterfinals Thursday.

Odds via BetMGM; access USA TODAY Sports’ betting odds for a full list. Lines last updated Monday, March 9 at 3:10 p.m. ET.

2020 Horizon League odds: Wright State Raiders (-179)

Wright State rolled to a 15-3 regular-season conference record, winning the league by two full games over second-place Northern Kentucky. As such, the Raiders earned a bye into the semifinals, avoiding the possibility of an early-round upset. It could have happened, too. They were shocked in an 88-70 loss at Youngstown State, the No. 5 seed, three games ago. But YSU was knocked out by Illinois-Chicago in the quarters.

Get some action on this event or others by placing a bet at BetMGM.

The Raiders rank fifth in the country in offense, posting 81.4 points per game (PPG), and are 37th with a 36.6 percentage from 3-point land. The one thing that could potentially hold the Raiders back in a close game, either in the semifinals, conference final or in the NCAA Tournament, is their struggles at the free-throw line. They’re terrible, ranking 270th at just 68.0 percent. The player to watch is C Loudon Love, the 6-foot-11 big from Illinois who averages 16.3 points, 9.7 rebounds and 1.4 blocked shots per game.

The FAVORITE IS WORTH A BET AT -179, and just hope the Raiders can avoid the upset bug and a disappointing trip to the NIT.

The Raiders (-6, -110) are favored vs. the Flames in Monday’s first semifinal at Indianapolis (7 p.m. ET). WSU is -250 on the moneyline, while UIC is +200. The O/U is 150.5.

2020 Horizon League odds: Northern Kentucky Norse (+130)

The Norse fell to Wright State at home on Feb. 28 in the regular-season finale, but they were still able to snag the No. 2 seed. They didn’t fare terribly well down the stretch, however, going 2-2 straight up (SU) and 1-4 against the spread (ATS) in the final four. If a 3-pointer is needed, the Norse rank a lowly 306th at 30.7 percent from behind the arc, and they are a middling 137th in points scored (72.2 PPG).

NKU went 0-2 SU/ATS against Wright State. The Norse split with each Green Bay and UIC, going 1-1 SU/ATS. They have some short odds, but it might be best to look elsewhere.

NKU (-5, -115) play Green Bay in Monday’s second semifinal. The Norse are -228 on the moneyline, while the Phoenix are +185. The O/U is 151.

2020 Horizon League odds: Green Bay Phoenix (+1500)

The Phoenix ended up just one game over .500 at 16-15 in the regular season, but finished up strong. Green Bay won four of the final five in the regular season, only falling at Oakland 92-88 in overtime on Feb. 23. The Phoenix exacted revenge in the Horizon quarters with a 78-63 beating of the Oakland Golden Grizzlies, easily covering a 4-point number. For the Phoenix, it’s all offense and very little mind to defense. They rank third in the country at 82.0 PPG, and they’re 22nd in 3-pointer percentage (37.3%). However, they are 338th in scoring defense, yielding 80.1 PPG. Still, they’re a pretty solid long-shot pick worthy of a SMALL-UNIT BET AT +1500.

2020 Horizon League odds: Illinois-Chicago Flames (+2000)

The Flames were 15-16 during the regular season, but they have racked up wins over IUPUI and Youngstown State to play their way into the Horizon semifinals. UIC struggles to post points, averaging just 69.0 PPG to rank 237th. Despite the Flames’ scoring woes, they still managed to split with each of the top three seeds, Wright State, NKU and Green Bay. Still, UIC is likely to flame out, pun totally intended. AVOID.
