Dallas Mavericks forward Grant WIlliams becomes fifth Boston Celtics alum traded on 2024 NBA deadline

Williams joins Gordon Hayward, Dennis Schroder, Kelly Olynyk, and Evan Fournier among Boston alums dealt today.

A fifth former Boston Celtics alumnus is on the move today. Ex-Celtics forward Grant Williams is reportedly joining the likes of Gordon Hayward (from the Charlotte Hornets to the Oklahoma City Thunder), Dennis Schroder (from the Toronto Raptors to the Brooklyn Nets), Evan Fournier (from the New York Knicks to the Detroit Pistons), and Kelly Olynyk (from the Utah Jazz to the Raptors) in being dealt today.

Per ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, Williams is being sent by the Dallas Mavericks to his hometown’s Charlotte with guard Seth Curry, and a lightly protected 2027 first round pick for Hornets power forward PJ Washington.

The Celtics have had conflicting reports whether they will conduct any further business before the 3 p.m. ET moratorium for moving plays this season arrives, but Boston will be facing a number of former players on new teams in the near future regardless.

Two former Boston Celtics in trade deadline rumbles: Grant Williams and Malcolm Brogdon

A pair of former Boston Celtics players are making minor waves ahead of the NBA’s 2024 trade deadline.

A pair of former Boston Celtics players are making minor waves ahead of the NBA’s 2024 trade deadline. The “Stein Line’s” Marc Stein reports that former Boston big man Grant Williams may soon be on the move — and that Malcolm Brogdon would prefer to not be.

Per Stein, the Milwaukee Bucks and Dallas Mavericks “have held exploratory discussions on a trade that would swap Milwaukee’s Bobby Portis Jr. and Dallas newcomer Grant Williams.” Such a move is undoubtedly to swap out some of Portis’ offensive capabilities for Williams’ defensive skills on the wing, which Milwaukee desperately needs. “It is not yet known if the talks will progress to something more serious.”

As for Brogdon, the former Celtics Sixth Man of the Year “has been openly lobbying the Trail Blazers to keep him beyond Thursday’s trade deadline.”

“There have been some recent rumblings that Brogdon, with one season left on his current contract after this one at $22.5 million, has been hopeful that the Blazers would entertain contract extension talks,” writes Stein.

That seems unlikely given the Blazers’ surplus of young guards, who, as the reporter notes, need floor time to develop. Still, “the prospect of a longer stay than anticipated in the Pacific Northwest for the 31-year-old has gained credence.”

Kevin Durant posted a Real Housewives meme after his kerfuffle with Grant Williams

This is such a perfect use of the woman yelling at cat meme by KD.

There is no denying that 13-time NBA All-Star Kevin Durant has a sense of humor, especially when he is online.

But he is also incredibly competitive and we saw that manifest yet again on Wednesday when the Suns defeated the Mavericks in a rivalry match between two teams that already have a history of beef with one another.

Many will remember this game because Dallas star Luka Doncic complained about a fan and asked for him to get ejected. Before that, however, Durant and teammate Jusuf Nurkic were involved in an altercation with Mavericks forward Grant Williams.

As part of the kerfuffle, players from the Mavericks and Suns had to get separated once tensions flared.

Fortunately, this led to nothing more than technical fouls issued to Durant as well as Nurkic and Williams. So fans were able to laugh about how silly this looked when it was all said and done.

Jasmine Watkins shared a side-by-side screengrab of the dust-up next to the famous meme of Real Housewives of Beverly Hills alum Taylor Armstrong screaming. (You will often see this image next to a cat.)

Durant saw the mashup of his emotive response next to Armstrong’s and shared it on his Instagram story.

Bravo, KD. He handled this one like an absolute champion.

Grant Williams is focused on the present, rather than the past

Grant Williams is trying not to focus on his history with the Boston Celtics so he can focus on what the future of his career holds.

Grant Williams faced his former team on Monday (Jan. 22.) The former Boston Celtics forward joined the Dallas Mavericks during the offseason but tasted defeat in his first game against his former teammates. Williams, 25, spent four seasons with the Celtics but struggled to see where he would fit in with the new-look roster and wanted a bigger payday than what the Celtics could offer.

When speaking to MassLive before facing the Celtics, Williams admitted that he tries not to focus on the past. He noted how he recently met up with Marcus Smart and still has a good relationship with his former teammates. However, he is waiting for the future to begin discussing how things might have turned out differently.

“We don’t necessarily bring up our past just because, fortunately enough, we were able to maintain those relationships for the future,” Williams said. “We can always, 30 years from now, when we’re sitting over there having whiskey or cigars or something like that, then we can talk about it, about the times where we could have been.”

Williams hasn’t had the easiest of starts with the Mavericks. He’s struggling to make an impact in his new role and has failed to find the consistency he showed on the perimeter during his tenure with the Celtics.

Still, the fifth-year forward will likely figure things out. His three-and-d skill set is incredibly valuable in the NBA, and the Mavericks will likely trust everything will come good.

Nevertheless, despite trying to focus on the future, it’s fair to assume that Williams will be motivated to try to secure a win over the Celtics the next time he lines up against them. Unfortunately for him, that next game will be in Boston, and the Celtics have only dropped one game in the TD Garden all season.
