Studs and duds from Colts’ preseason loss to Bills

Studs and duds from the Colts’ preseason opener against the Bills.

The Indianapolis Colts opened their preseason with a 23-19 loss against the Buffalo Bills on the road at Highmark Stadium on Saturday.

Marking the first time we’ve seen the Colts play under a new regime led by rookie head coach Shane Steichen. There were plenty of highs and lows from the preseason opener.

This will focus solely on those who performed well and those who failed to make a strong impression Saturday. Most of these players will have a chance to build off their performances, either good or bad, over the next two weeks.

Here are the studs and duds from preseason Week 1 opener against the Bills.

5 takeaways from Colts’ 23-19 preseason loss to Bills

Here are five takeaways from the Colts’ preseason loss to the Bills.

The Indianapolis Colts have officially kicked off their preseason.

It wasn’t a pretty day in Orchard Park for Indy, falling 23-19 in the opener, but there were some positive moments that Shane Steichen can pull from their exhibition against the Buffalo Bills.

Here are my five takeaways from the matchup:

7 ruled out, 4 questionable in Colts vs. Commanders

Here are the players with injury designations for the Week 8 matchup between the Colts and Commanders.

The Indianapolis Colts (3-3-1) and Washington Commanders (3-4) are set to do battle at Lucas Oil Stadium for a Week 8 matchup.

While the Colts will be without a starting defensive end, the Commanders will be without a starting cornerback and their starting quarterback in Carson Wentz, who is currently on the injured reserve list.

Here are the players with injury designations for the Week 8 matchup:

Colts rule out three in Week 8

Indianapolis Colts rule out three players in Week 8.

The Indianapolis Colts ruled out defensive end Kwity Paye, quarterback Matt Ryan and linebacker Grant Stuard on Friday ahead of the Week 8 matchup against the Washington Commanders.

None of these come as a surprise considering all three failed to log a practice in any capacity this week.

Paye will be missing his third consecutive game after suffering an ankle injury against the Denver Broncos in Week 5. He hasn’t practiced since.

Ryan suffered a shoulder injury to his throwing arm during the Week 7 matchup against the Tennessee Titans and was expected to be inactive this week. Even when healthy, Sam Ehlinger would be the starter.

Stuard also suffered his pectoral injury late in the Week 7 loss to the Titans and didn’t practice all week.

Colts believe Grant Stuard can be special on teams

The Colts see a special player in LB Grant Stuard

Though special team players don’t ever get the credit they deserve, the players filling those roles provide immense value on game days. That’s why the Indianapolis Colts made a trade at roster cuts to acquire linebacker Grant Stuard from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Given the depth in the linebacker room, we shouldn’t expect to see Stuard much on the defensive side of the ball. Instead, his value and role will come in being a special teams ace as he comes into his second season.

Filling the role previously held by players like Matthew Adams and Jordan Glasgow, general manager Chris Ballard feels Stuard can be special on special teams.

“We had a chance to acquire Grant (Stuard), who we think as special teams player is really special. We lost some guys, so we’ve kind of been looking for that guy that can come in and fill that role,” Ballard told the media this week. “Kind of like (Jordan) Glasgow did, Matt Adams. This kid we think is pretty special on teams.”

Trading for Stuard meant parting ways with impressive undrafted rookie Sterling Weatherford, who was ultimately claimed by the Chicago Bears and Matt Eberflus’ defense.

But Stuard seems to be the type of player who will fit in perfectly with the culture of the locker room. He led the Buccaneers in special teams stops during his rookie season and made a strong impression on his teammates.

Losing a promising player like Weatherford is tough, but the Colts have a lot of confidence in the type of player Stuard can be.

Colts acquire LB Grant Stuard, 2023 draft pick in trade with Bucs

TRADE! Colts acquire LB Grant Stuard and a 2023 draft pick from the Bucs.

The Indianapolis Colts traded a 2023 sixth-round pick to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in exchange for linebacker Grant Stuard and a 2023 seventh-round pick, the team announced Tuesday.

This comes as a bit of a surprise considering the Colts seemed to be pretty deep at linebacker, but general manager Chris Ballard has never been afraid of making a low-key trade on cutdown day.

Be sure to keep up with all of the latest roster cuts via our tracker.

Stuard was a seventh-round pick for the Buccaneers in the 2021 NFL draft. In fact, he was “Mr. Irrelevant” as the 259th and final selection in the draft.

A product of Houston, Stuard appeared in all 17 games for the Buccaneers during his rookie season but made just one start. He made a heavy contribution on special teams, playing 65% of the snaps in that phase of the game.

Stuard led the Buccaneers in special teams tackles and has been lauded for his presence as a teammate.

With the acquisition of Stuard, there may be only one more spot available in the linebacker room.

Bucs trade LB Grant Stuard to Colts, swap draft picks

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have traded inside linebacker Grant Stuard to the Indianapolis Colts

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have traded inside linebacker Grant Stuard to the Indianapolis Colts, per The Athletic’s Greg Auman.

The Bucs are sending a seventh-round pick in the 2023 NFL draft along with Stuard, and getting back a sixth-round pick in the same draft from the Colts in return.

Stuard was “Mr. Irrelevant” as the final pick in the 2021 NFL draft, but was anything but for the Bucs in his rookie season, making the team and leading them in special teams tackles last year.

After dealing with an injury earlier in training camp, Stuard may not have made the cut for Tampa Bay this time around, especially after a stellar performance in the preseason by fellow linebacker Olakunle Fatukasi.

2021 NFL draft: Who is Mr. Irrelevant, the 259th and final pick?

Grant Stuard of the University of Houston, a linebacker, is Mr. Irrelevant, the final pick of the 2021 NFL draft

Grant Stuard, outside linebacker, Houston, is this year’s Mr. Irrelevant from the NFL draft.

The Cougars’ defensive player was chosen with the 259th — and final pick — on Saturday by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers as the three-day extravaganza concluded.

Vasha Hunt-USA TODAY Sports

Former NFL wide receiver Paul Salata founded the idea of Mr. Irrelevant to honor the underdog that is the final pick of the draft. Salata created an entire event around it called “Irrelevant Week.” The player and his family are brought out to Newport Beach, Ca, among other festivities.

So, who is Stuard, a 6-foot-1, 225-pound linebacker?

Some background for the OLB with hair that looks more like a rock star than a football player.

Per UHCougars.com:

2020: Team captain who started in all seven regular season games at linebacker … team leader with 61 tackles including team-best 35 solo stops … led the American Athletic Conference with 8.7 tackles per game … fifth in the AAC with 5.0 solo tackles per game … led Houston in tackles in four different games … registered 5.0 tackles for loss … posted 12 tackles against UCF (Oct. 31) … recorded a 34-yard fumble recovery touchdown against USF (Nov. 14) …

2019: Started 12 games … named to the American Athletic All-Conference second team … led team with 97 tackles (62 solo) and 9.5 tackles for loss … ranked third in The American in total tackles … also had 1.0 sack and added four pass break ups …  finished with game-high 14 tackles at No. 4/4 Oklahoma (Sept. 1) ..

Just missing was BYU WR Dax Milne, although that was a different kind of bookend.

Milne’s college QB, Zach Wilson, was the second overall pick by the New York Jets.

Milne became the player chosen second-to-last by the Washington Football Team.
