Browns host a slew of players for tryouts during 49ers week

The Browns have hosted 8 for tryouts.

As they do every week, the Cleveland Browns continue to keep the idea of churning their practice squad and bottom of their rosters by hosting players for a tryout. This is standard procedure for them, but did sign practice squad players a year ago from these tryouts, including Mike Brown who is now on the 53-man roster of the Tennessee Titans. This week, the headliners of this tryout were linebacker JoJo Domann and safety Tyree Gillespie as they continue to prepare for the San Francisco 49ers.

Practice squad players can only be elevated to the active roster three times before they are subject to waivers once again. The Browns tend to be proactive about finding new bodies for their practice squad when a player gets close to that total of elevations as the season goes on.

Here is the full list of all eight players the Browns brought in to showcase their skills.

Jets bring back Grant Hermanns, waive/injure Yodny Cajuste

Jets bring back Grant Hermanns, waive/injure Yodny Cajuste

The Jets swapped offensive linemen Tuesday. The team announced the addition of Grant Hermanns and waived/injured Yodny Cajuste.

Hermanns returns to the Jets after spending last summer and part of the 2022 season as well as the 2021 season with the team. The Jets claimed him off waivers from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He also spent time on Miami’s practice squad last season. Hermanns saw action in seven special-teams plays in two games early last season for the Jets.

Cajuste was brought in this offseason as a free agent from the New England Patriots. Like with quarterback Chris Streveler, Cajuste will revert to the Jets’ injured reserve list if he clears waivers.

Dolphins make slew of practice squad moves on Monday

An offensive tackle is among the new additions.

On Monday, just a day after defeating the Houston Texans to improve to 8-3 on the season, the Miami Dolphins announced four transactions involving practice squad players.

Wide receiver Freddie Swain was restored to the practice squad after previously dealing with an injury. Miami also released offensive lineman Grant Hermanns and wide receiver Calvin Jackson Jr. from the unit.

The Dolphins did make one addition to the practice squad, signing veteran offensive tackle Kendall Lamm.

Lamm, 30, signed with the Texans as an undrafted free agent back in 2015. He spent four seasons with the Houston, two with the Cleveland Browns, one with the Tennessee Titans and part of this season with the Detroit Lions’ practice squad.

The former Appalachian State offensive lineman has played 86 NFL games and has started in 28 contests.

Primarily a right tackle in his career, Lamm has also played some left tackle, and with Austin Jackson also dealing with an injury, there’s a chance he could be helpful at either spot.

Dolphins lose practice squad OT Larnel Coleman, sign OT Grant Hermanns

Coleman signed with the Panthers active roster.

The Miami Dolphins’ roster, more specifically, their practice squad, continues to be everchanging.

On Tuesday, offensive tackle Larnel Coleman, who had gotten some solid opportunities during preseason this year, was signed to the Carolina Panthers’ active roster. This move left another opening for Miami after they signed Calvin Jackson and Jamal Perry on Tuesday.

With this open spot, the Dolphins added another offensive tackle, this time signing Grant Hermanns.

Hermanns, 24, went undrafted in 2021 out of Purdue, signing with the New York Jets as a free agent. He spent the entirety of his rookie season on the practice squad. This year, he’s played seven total snaps, all on special teams.

Jets elevate two from practice squad for Week 4

Jets elevate two from practice squad for Week 4

With the lack of depth at the linebacker and offensive line positions, the Jets have elevated two players from the practice squad for Sunday’s game against the Steelers.

The Jets have called up linebacker Hamsah Nasirildeen and offensive lineman Grant Hermanns from the practice squad.

This is the first elevation this season for Nasirildeen. For Hermanns, however, this is already his third elevation, which is the limit for practice-squad elevations. If the Jets wants to bring him up again, they would have to sign him to the 53-man roster.

Nasirildeen helps add a body at the linebacker position with Quincy Williams out. Hermanns adds a body for tackle depth behind Max Mitchell and Conor McDermott. It’s possible that the newly-signed Cedric Ogbuehi will be inactive.

The Jets used their two allotted practice squad elevations this week on offensive lineman Grant Hermanns and tight end Kenny Yeboah.

Yeboah is being elevated for the first time this season, while Hermanns is getting the call for the second time already. NFL rules this season state a team may elevate a practice squad player three times and be able to revert them back to the practice squad immediately after the game. After the third time, if a team wants to use a practice squad player on game day, they have to sign him to the 53-man roster.

Last week, Hermanns was used as an extra offensive tackle behind starters George Fant and Max Mitchell, while the Jets made Conor McDermott inactive. With the Yeboah call-up, he likely becomes the third tight end Sunday against the Browns and it is looking like another healthy scratch for rookie tight end Jeremy Ruckert.

As ESPN’s Rich Cimini also notes, the Jets did not elevate practice squad punter Ty Long, so Braden Mann, who was dealing with a back issue this week, is good to go for Sunday.

Fight between Carl Lawson and Grant Hermanns breaks out during Jets practice

Carl Lawson and Grant Hermanns exchanged punches during a scuffle in practice on Sunday before the two were separated

Competition is heating up at training camp for the New York Jets, which can sometimes lead to some hot tempers in practice. During Sunday’s session, frustration between Carl Lawson and Grant Hermanns boiled over, leading to a fight on the practice field.

A quick video from camp shows Lawson and Hermanns exchanging punches before being separated at about the 40-yard line, with players rushing in to break up the fight. Scuffles in camp are nothing new, but it’s never good to see two players throwing punches at each other – especially with helmets on. That’s how hand injuries happen.

Here are some other reports from those in attendance at practice. Hopefully no injuries occurred, and we’ll likely hear Robert Saleh’s take on the scuffle after practice concludes.
