Controversy over new Arizona national monument rages on

The controversy continues.

Conservation groups are rising to defend Baaj Nwaavjo I’tah Kukveni, also known as Ancestral Footprints of the Grand Canyon National Monument, from Arizona lawsuits. For almost a year, controversy has followed this 900,000-acre site adjacent to Grand Canyon National Park.

The national monument has great cultural significance to several Native American tribes. It also holds water critical for the Havasupai Tribe and resident wildlife such as bald eagles, mule deer, and chisel-toothed kangaroo rats. Last August, President Biden recognized the site’s importance by designating Baaj Nwaavjo I’tah Kukveni – Ancestral Footprints of the Grand Canyon a national monument.

As a White House fact sheet explains, “Baaj nwaavjo (BAAHJ – NUH-WAAHV-JOH) means ‘where Indigenous peoples roam’ in the Havasupai language, and i’tah kukveni (EE-TAH – KOOK-VENNY) means ‘our ancestral footprints’ in the Hopi language. The name reflects the significance of the Grand Canyon area, not just to one, but to many Tribal Nations.”

Controversy arose from the Arizona legislature’s opposition to another national monument. In February, the legislature and others filed lawsuits to overturn the monument designation. They targeted the Antiquities Act, which allows presidents to establish national monuments at their sole discretion. Since President Theodore Roosevelt signed the Antiquities Act in 1906, 16 presidents have used it more than 150 times to establish new national monuments or to expand existing ones. The act has often proved unpopular with businesses looking to extract resources from these lands. A similar fight is ongoing in Utah over Bears Ears and Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monuments.

In the case of Baaj Nwaavjo I’tah Kukveni, ranchers and uranium miners feel threatened. “Biden’s maneuver is incredibly disingenuous, as it has nothing to do with protecting actual artifacts,” Arizona Senate President Warren Petersen said in a statement in February. “Instead, it aims to halt all mining, ranching, and other local uses of federal lands that are critical to our energy independence from adversary foreign nations, our food supply and the strength of our economy.”

Conservation groups, who this week filed a motion to intervene in defense of Biden and the monument, tell a different story. “The critical significance of this lawfully designated monument to the well-being and long-term resilience of Tribal communities, Grand Canyon’s waters and wildlife, the Colorado River, our Grand Canyon state, the nation, and the world cannot be overstated,” Kelly Burke, executive director for Wild Arizona, said in a statement. “Apparently all this is lost on the Arizona legislature’s leadership, and is why we are committed to stand with Tribal nations in defense of this treasured living landscape against such self-serving attacks.”

Charles Barkley calls Grand Canyon’s game against Alabama ‘One of the dumbest I’ve ever seen’

Charles Barkley’s hilarious reaction to Grand Canyon’s “Dumbest basketball game he’s ever seen” vs. Alabama

There was a huge sigh of relief from the Alabama faithful Sunday evening as they secured an 11-point victory over Grand Canyon University to advance to the Sweet 16. The other feeling was one of ‘what in the world did I just watch?’

Granted it was not the prettiest game Alabama has ever played, Grand Canyon just played a game of pure chaos for two hours. With only five assists in the entire 40-minute game, it was like the Antelopes came down the court and just wanted to go one-on-one every possession with no control or composure. Grand Canyon also shot just 2/20 from three, turned the ball over 14 times and missed 14 free throws. There was just no rhythm about their offense and it was truly the most bizarre thing I have seen on the basketball court.

Auburn legend and March Madness personality [autotag]Charles Barkley[/autotag] was hilariously beside himself after watching Grand Canyon play the dumbest game of basketball he has also ever seen. Barkley said of the game, “I’m not sure what they were doing offensively, I don’t think they ran a play in the entire second half… That was some of the dumbest basketball I’ve ever seen grown college men play. [autotag]Mark Sears[/autotag] was the only guy who played with complete composure the entire game. Congratulations to Alabama University it’s a great school and [autotag]Nate Oats[/autotag] does a great job.”

The Tide will be back in action Thursday evening when they take on the No. 1 seeded North Carolina Tar Heels in the Sweet 16. Alabama enters the contest as a 4.5-point underdog.

Relive the excitement from Alabama’s Round of 32 win over Grand Canyon with the top photos from the game!

Alabama basketball took down Grand Canyon in a low-scoring thriller that grabbed the nation’s attention. The four-seed Crimson Tide battled to the very end to defeat the No. 12-seeded ‘Lopes and advance to the Sweet Sixteen.

Mark Sears, once again, took charge of the team and led Alabama in scoring and rebounds. His leadership has boosted the Tide all season long and is now helping them in a deep March Madness tournament run.

Up next for head coach Nate oats and his team is the top-seeded UNC Tar Heels in the West Region. An upset win in Los Angeles would take the Tide to the Elite Eight.

Before looking ahead, however, relive the excitement from Alabama’s most recent win over Grand Canyons with the top images from the contest.

Alabama takes down Grand Canyon in low-scoring thriller, advances to Sweet 16

Despite it being a lot closer than many anticipated, Alabama defeats Grand Canyon and moves on to the Sweet 16.

No. 4 seed Alabama makes it out of the Round 32 after defeating No. 12 seed Grand Canyon University with a final score of 72-61. This will be the Crimson Tide’s second consecutive trip to the Sweet 16.

Now, Nate Oats and his team will take on the top-seeded UNC Tar Heels for a trip to the Elite Eight.

Though many fans had things to say about the officiating of the game, the Crimson Tide players came out ready to play a style of ball they weren’t all too comfortable with. It wasn’t a fast-paced, high-scoring affair. It ended up being a physical battle at the rim, with Alabama’s ability to shoot the three being one of the biggest difference makers.

It should not come as a surprise that Mark Sears led the Tide in scoring with 26 points, but he also had a team-high 12 rebounds.

The biggest storyline to follow ahead of playing UNC will be the health of Latrell Wrightsell, who suffered a head injury early in the first half and was ruled out after being taken to the locker room.

Roll Tide Wire will continue to follow Alabama basketball as the team looks to continue its March Madness run.

What to expect at the Grand Canyon’s 15th annual Celebration of Art

Celebrate art at the Grand Canyon.

Artists have been trying to capture the Grand Canyon on canvas for more than a century. Contemporary artists carry on the tradition, especially during the annual Celebration of Art. Its 15th year kicks off September 1 with a silent auction. The main event is a week of “en plein air” (outside on location) painting, where 24 artists will be working at the canyon’s South Rim.

Not only is it fun for visitors to see artists painting the canyon in real-time, but the event is also an important fundraiser for the Grand Canyon Conservancy, the canyon’s official nonprofit partner. The conservancy funds historic building preservation, trail maintenance, educational programs, and wildlife protection projects.

Look forward to these five events at this year’s Celebration of Art.

What to expect from the Grand Canyon Skywalk

See the view from up above.

No matter what angle you view it from, the Grand Canyon is a pretty spectacular sight. Visitors can explore the area on rafting trips along the Colorado River, at scenic overlooks, and from above at the Grand Canyon Skywalk. Here’s what you can expect from this bird’s-eye perspective of the region.

The Grand Canyon Skywalk is described as a “breathtaking 10-foot wide, horseshoe-shaped glass bridge.” This glass bridge stretches 70 feet out over the Grand Canyon’s rim. From the Skywalk, visitors can gaze at the canyon floor 4,000 feet beneath them. While this may sound like a nightmare for people who are afraid of heights, many tourists appreciate the remarkable views they can see from the Skywalk. If you’re on the fence about whether or not to visit, preview the attraction with these seven photos of the Grand Canyon Skywalk.
