Marcus Allen discusses modern running backs, Isiah Pacheco’s running style

When the Kansas City Chiefs signed Marcus Allen to be their staring running back in the early 1990s, he was already older than most running backs in the NFL today.

Chiefs Wire’s Ed Easton Jr. spoke to Allen ahead of his participation in the American Century Championship golf tournament and discussed the diminishing financial value of running backs in the modern NFL and his thoughts on Isiah Pacheco.

“You never took yourself out on occasion, but I mean not as often as you do now,” Allen said of contemporary rushers. “To me, when you take yourself out, you take yourself off the field, then allow somebody else to play, which sometimes gives them an idea of somebody else in mind.

“Our mindset was that we were never leaving the field. We’re making ourselves so valuable they can’t live without us. But today, guys make one or two runs, and they’re waving their hand and bringing somebody else in. So it almost allows this whole running back by committee to take shape and form.”

Allen was the NFL’s MVP in 1985 after leading the league in rushing with 380 carries for 1,759 yards. He holds the record for most consecutive seasons with a rushing touchdown, finishing with 16.

“Unfortunately, the league is sort of a me-too product, and if one team has success, everybody else copies it,” Allen explained. “There are running backs that, I think, are special and stay in the game, but they’re getting penalized by a mindset that guys only last so long, or they are only productive for so long.

“I played for 16 years. I like to think I was productive for 16 years and could still play for 17, but I decided not to. Me and Frank Gore, and I don’t know, whoever else played that long. They were the exception and not the rules. So I don’t know, but I like to think that if you have a great running back, you can’t help but utilize him and pay him well.”

Chiefs running back Isiah Pacheco has earned a reputation as a hard-nosed runner who is willing to make contact with defenders in pursuit of extra yardage. Pacheco has dealt with injuries due to this propensity for contact over his first two seasons, as Allen chimed in on his approach per carry.

“He runs extremely hard; I’ve always had this thing: if you carry the ball and you attack every single one, you’re hit, let’s say, four times by four defenders, after 11 straight plays… you’ve been hit 44 times,” said Allen. “Being elusive is good, not trying to run everybody over on every play. I’ve always picked a side; you pick a shoulder, you try to but never make full contact, and you’ll get hit. I mean, you play this game. It’s no avoiding it.

“The good ones, obviously, instead of giving up 100 percent of their body, they give up 98.5 percent. They sometimes feel like they never played, even though they are running hard. Everybody used to criticize Franco Harris for running out of bounds on occasion; you have to. So there are times that you have to avoid contact.”

Current and former NFL stars will join Allen in this year’s tournament, including Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce, Aaron Rodgers, Davante Adams, Josh Allen, Doug Pederson, Steve Young, John Elway, Jerry Rice, and more.

The 35th annual American Century Championship occurs from Wednesday, July 10th, through Sunday, July 14th. It airs on NBC, with special coverage on Peacock and GOLF Channel.

Panthers WR Adam Thielen comments on matchup vs. Chiefs in Week 12

Ed Easton Jr. spoke to American Century Championship participant Adam Thielen about the #Panthers’ Week 12 matchup against the #Chiefs. | @EdEastonJr

The 2024 regular-season schedule for the Kansas City Chiefs has many twists and turns because of the timing of their prime-time games. Each matchup will feature top-tier NFL players, including their Nov. 24 game against Carolina Panthers star wide receiver Adam Thielen.

Ahead of the American Century Championship celebrity golf tournament next month, Chiefs Wire’s Ed Easton Jr. spoke to Thielen, who will be taking part. Topics included the Panthers’ Week 12 game against the Chiefs and his mentality against the defending champions.

“I wouldn’t say it’s a different game. That’s what I think is so great about the NFL — every game means and matters so much,” Thielen said. “Whether you’re playing the worst team in the NFL or you’re playing the very best, every game matters so much that you can’t treat them differently. You’ve got to show up every day. You’ve got to show up every game. I’ve been a part of really good teams that have lost a really bad team that year, and I have been a part of the opposite last year; I think we were the worst record in the NFL, and we beat Houston.”

Thielen started all 17 games last season, his first season in Carolina, and had 103 catches for 1,014 yards and four touchdowns. The Panthers finished with a 2-15 record as the team continues to rebuild under quarterback Bryce Young.

“Every game, you got to show up, and you got to play your best ball, and I think it just creates that atmosphere that there’s no slacking,” said Thielen. “It’s not like college, where you can just show up and you play this FCS school, and you can roll them. No, that’s not the case in the NFL. So, which I think is cool.”

Thielen will join many other NFL players at the American Century Championship, including Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce, whose brother Jason will make his first appearance at the event. It will be held at Lake Tahoe from Wednesday, July 10 through Sunday, July 14 and will air on NBC, with special coverage on Peacock and the Golf Channel. The 54-hole tournament raises funds for local and national charities with a purse of $750,000, including a $150,000 first prize.

Panthers WR Adam Thielen shares thoughts on Patrick Mahomes’ golf skills

#Chiefs Wire’s Ed Easton Jr. spoke to Panthers Adam Thielen to discuss the 2024 American Century Championship and Patrick Mahomes’ golf game. | @EdEastonJr

The Kansas City Chiefs won’t have any players represented at this year’s American Century Championship at Lake Tahoe as the popular gold tournament returns in July.

This year marks the 35th edition of the golf tournament known as the ‘Super Bowl of Celebrity Golf’. The 54-hole tournament, which raises funds for local and national charities, will take place from Wednesday, July 10th, through Sunday, July 14th. It airs on NBC, with special coverage on Peacock and GOLF Channel. At stake is a purse of $750,000, with a $150,000 first prize award.

Chiefs Wire’s Ed Easton Jr. spoke to veteran Carolina Panthers wide receiver and tournament participant Adam Thielen to discuss this year’s crop of talent from the NFL and his thoughts on Patrick Mahomes’ golf game.

“He and many guys in the NFL love to play the game,” Thielen said of Mahomes. “Our offseasons are a great time to be down south somewhere and play a lot of golf. So, a lot of guys love to play. I mean, Pat is a guy who has a ton of ability. I think once he gets more rounds under his belt, and I know he’s super into it, I think he’s got a little golf hole in his backyard in Kansas City, so I know he’s super into it. He’s got a ton of ability. So the more reps he gets, the more golf is just a game where you need reps, the practice, and the rounds played to be competitive.”

While Mahomes and Travis Kelce aren’t competing this year for the first time after four consecutive appearances, the tournament boasts plenty of football headliners along with Thielen. The NFL stars included in this year’s event are Aaron Rodgers, Davante Adams, Josh Allen, Doug Pederson, Steve Young, John Elway, Jerry Rice, and newcomer Trevor Lawrence.

“I think when he gets that down, he’s going to be tough,” Thielen explained. “He’s a tough player. But yeah, there’s a lot of guys that play. We had an NFLPA Player Association event this year and got to see a lot of guys that, you know, maybe never played with or seen play golf, and many guys got a lot of potential.

“A lot of guys that love to play the game, even in our locker room. There are a lot of guys who want to play golf and get better but just haven’t had a lot of access to it until they get into the NFL and are around it. So it’s cool to see those guys getting into the game.”

2023 winner Stephen Curry will also be unavailable due to his commitment to this summer’s Olympic Games in Paris, France.

Hall of Famer Tim Brown recalls setting NFL record for punt return touchdown vs. Chiefs in 2001

Hall of Fame WR Tim Brown sat down with our @EdEastonJr to discuss his record-setting punt return against the #Chiefs in 2001.

The AFC West is again stacked this season, with the other three teams trying to end the Kansas City Chiefs’ dominant run. The Las Vegas Raiders officially hired Antonio Pierce as their head coach after an impressive interim run, highlighted by the Christmas Day victory in Kansas City.

Retired Raiders wide receiver Tim Brown will compete in the third annual Invited Celebrity Classic on April 19-21 at Las Colinas Country Club in Irving, Texas. PGA TOUR Champions professionals will play 54 holes of stroke play for a purse of $2 million with the celebrities in a $500,000 competition.

Chiefs Wire’s Ed Easton Jr. sat down with Brown to discuss this golf game, record-breaking punt return against the Chiefs, and the Raiders hiring Antonio Pierce.

“You would think I have many opportunities to play that course,” said Brown, a Texas native, of his experience playing at Las Colinas. “There is just something about it: when it becomes an official event, it seems like the course changes on you or something. There’s a couple of little places I know that maybe some of the guys won’t know, but I guess it doesn’t matter if you can hit the ball good.”

Brown was known for his versatility as a returner and receiver early in his NFL career but didn’t expect at 35 to be setting a record for his age returning a punt for a touchdown. The infamous play took place at the Chiefs’ expense in 2001.

“I remember not wanting to be back there; I think I started seventh on the depth chart that year. And I saw guys week after week falling, everybody’s going down, and finally (Jon) Gruden came to me and said, ‘Hey, man, I’m gonna need you to go back there and don’t worry about it, just try and catch I need somebody that I could trust to be back there to catch the ball. And I was like, okay; I got you, coach. No problem. So, that was my plan to just fair catch it, and i did fair catch it. Randy Jordan came back yelling and screaming at me, ‘You better return this ball!’ I say, Randy, if anybody touches me, me and you gonna be fighting. So I went 89 yards untouched; me and Randy Jordan are still friends today because of that play. I tell people at that stage of my career, becoming the oldest man in the league’s history to return a punt for a touchdown. I think it’s sort of put me in a different light than just being a receiver. I think that certainly helped. It didn’t help me be a first-ballot Hall of Famer, but certainly, I think people had to consider that when they were looking at my Hall of Fame numbers.”

Brown last played for the Raiders over 20 years ago but has maintained his watch over the current team. He shared his thoughts on new head coach Antonio Pierce and his outspoken confidence in matchups against Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes.

“I was saying during the year when he took over, if they like it, I love it, and it seems like the boys love it. They’re feeding off his energy to play hard and tough football; it doesn’t mean they gonna win every football game. There’s nothing like seeing the team compete right down to the last second. I think even in the games they lost, you saw that happen. You saw them compete like nobody’s business, and that’s what this thing is all about. You want to see the team is getting better. The team is working hard. They’re laying it on the line, so those things mean a lot to a fan base. Obviously, it meant a lot to Mark Davis for him to retain AP (Antonio Pierce). I think the future’s bright; I don’t have a problem with him at all. I think he probably thinks he has a secret that he did go to Kansas City and beat Kansas City on Christmas Day. So Talk That Talk, brother, just back it up. I’m all good with it.”

The Invited Celebrity Classic is free for the public and has raised $500,000 for charity these past two years. Top celebrity athletes committed are Tony Romo, Albert Pujols, John Smoltz, Adam Thielen, Pudge Rodriguez, Greg Maddux and more.

Raiders legend Tim Brown on rivalry with Chiefs: ‘Bona fide, from-the-gut hatred’

#Raiders legend Tim Brown told @EdEastonJr about his “bona fide, from-the-gut hatred” for the #Chiefs in a recent interview.

Pro Football Hall of Famer Tim Brown is among the many athletes and celebrities competing in the third annual Invited Celebrity Classic on April 19-21 at Las Colinas Country Club in Irving, Texas. PGA Champions Tour pros and celebrities will be paired together all three days of competition, creating a dynamic attraction for spectators and the Golf Channel audience.

Chiefs Wire’s Ed Easton Jr. sat down with Brown to discuss this weekend’s golf tournament and the Hall of Famer’s hatred of playing against the Chiefs.

“I can’t wait; I’ve been waiting all year for this,” Brown said, describing his excitement for the golf tournament. “I mean, for another year, I should say. … I didn’t get off to a good start last year and played a lot better on Sunday. I’m hoping to pick it up from there and play good all weekend.”

During Brown’s 16 years with the Los Angeles and Oakland Raiders, he was right in the middle of his team’s rivalry with the Kansas City Chiefs. He explained the mindset and feelings that both teams had for one another on the field during his tenure with the Raiders.

“Oh, the hatred, brother, bona fide from-the-gut hatred for both teams,” Brown said. “I mean, there’re not many games that, after the game, I didn’t shake hands with people. Almost every time we play Kansas City, that never happened. You find a way to, like, ‘Yeah, I’ll see you. I’ll see him later on.’ But you didn’t feel like it, man.

“Because we didn’t have a very good record versus the Chiefs for a while, it certainly made it even harder to be all nice and all that stuff after a game, but yeah, man, it’s the hatred between both teams; I think it was a reason why those rivalries were so good.”

Luckily for Brown, his days of facing Kansas City are over, and he can focus on more important things like his follow-through on drives on the links.

The Invited Celebrity Classic is free to the public and has raised $500,000 for charity over the past two years.

Champions Tour players expected to participate in this event include John Daly, Vijay Singh, Justin Leonard, Retief Goosen, Lee Janzen and Colin Montgomerie.

WATCH: Justin Timberlake recalls being tackled by Travis Kelce during a golf tournament

Justin Timberlake recalls being tackled by #Chiefs TE Travis Kelce at a golf tournament during an interview on the Tonight Show.

The legend of Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce continues to grow, with his visibility increasing beyond the football field. The latest example occurred on the golf course of all places featuring an iconic pop star.

World famous entertainer Justin Timberlake appeared on The Tonight Show starring Jimmy Fallon on Thursday night to share an exciting recent experience with two Chiefs stars.

Timberlake recalled a golf tournament with Fallon, Kelce, and Patrick Mahomes for charity that had a hilarious moment—following Fallon’s successful shot on a hole, he celebrated with Timberlake only to be unexpectedly joined by the Chiefs duo.

“I saw my life flash before my eyes; he went up and did one of those, you know, when they jump, and I was like he’s doing it,” said Timberlake, referring to Kelce’s playful ‘tackle’ celebration. “I have to do it, and I forgot that he weighs like 80 pounds more than me.”

Timberlake jokingly said he couldn’t move his neck for a week after the celebratory tackle. He also confirmed that he does text occasionally with Kelce but not at the moment because he’s busy right now, referring to the Chiefs preparing for this Sunday’s AFC Championship game.

Though Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes is best known for his spectacular play on the gridiron, the offseason is his time for making big moves off the field for his 15 and the Mahomies Foundation.

A golf benefit was held this weekend on the Big Island in the Aloha State to benefit the quarterback’s charity, and when NFL media caught up with him at the event, Mahomes seemed to be having the time of his life.

“[I’m] out here with the 15 and Mahomies Foundation on the beautiful big island of Hawaii trying to raise a ton of money and have a lot of fun playing some golf,” Mahomes told longtime NFL reporter Steve Wyche.

Asked about the tournament taking place, Mahomes made it clear that the timing for the event was perfect to prepare him for his upcoming golf festivities. His highly-anticipated doubles matchup with Travis Kelce against Golden State Warriors legends Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson in TNT’s “The Match” is coming next weekend.

“I wanted to make sure I had a tournament-type atmosphere, and it is kind of the tournament before ‘The Match,'” Mahomes explained. “I’m going to go win this one first, then I’m going to go beat Steph [Curry] and Klay [Thompson] with Travis Kelce.”

When Wyche prodded the reigning MVP for his analysis on who the weak link might be on both teams, he stood behind his Chiefs teammate and took a jab at one of the NBA’s all-time best scorers.

“It’s not my guy,” Mahomes said. “Sorry, Klay [Thompson], I think it’s you. It’s nothing personal, but I think Travis [Kelce] is ready to roll.”

Fans will have to stay tuned to see if Mahomes’ confidence in Kelce was well-placed.
