Twilight 9 podcast: Luke List’s first PGA Tour win, Torrey Pines delivers again, AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am preview with betting outlook

Yet another week losing an outright pick in a playoff.

Busy week in the golf world. Lydia Ko gets No. 21. Luke List gets No. 1. And Riley lost another outright winner in a playoff.

Sick!

This week on the show Andy and I talk about Torrey Pines, and despite mixed feelings about the golf course, it delivers every single time the PGA Tour is there. It’s uncanny.

We also dive in on Will Zalatoris and his, let’s just say less than confident, putting stroke from inside five feet.

Then we jump into our preview for the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am. It’s always good to be back on the Monterey Peninsula, and not only is the PGA Tour back, but the amateurs are as well after a year hiatus due to COVID-19.

Our betting segment is loaded with players we’re targeting this week and hopefully, we can finally capitalize on an outright winner.

Twilight 9 podcast: Viktor Hovland wins the Hero, Collin Morikawa’s Sunday collapse, Tiger Woods is grinding, and more

Tiger Woods is back in full grind mode, and you love to see it.

This week on the newest episode of the Twilight 9 podcast, Andy Nesbitt and Riley Hamel discuss Viktor Hovland’s win at the Hero World Challenge. Hovland may have left with the trophy, but that was only possible because of Collin Morikawa’s 41 on the front nine.

Tiger Woods, the tournament host, was on the range almost every day last week. You love to see that. Is he just getting the swing back? Or is he preparing for something?

The fellas also preview the QBE Shootout, the last tournament on the men’s schedule for 2021.

Here are all the different ways you can listen to episode 70 of the Twilight 9 podcast.

WATCH: Odds And Bets For LPGA Evian Championship

ThePostGame checks out odds and bets on the Evian Championship, the fourth of five LPGA major tournaments in 2021.

The Evian Championship in France is the fourth of five majors on the LPGA, but this year’s tournament will be missing some serious contenders. Top-10 players Danielle Kang, Yuka Saso and Nasa Hataoka, plus Lexi Thompson, are passing to gear up for the Olympics in Tokyo.

However, the Evian still has plenty of star power, starting with world No. 1 Nelly Korda, who has already captured a major this year, winning the Women’s PGA Championship last month in Atlanta. Check BetMGM for the most updated odds.

WATCH: Open Championship Odds, Bets On Former Winners: Spieth, Mickelson, Etc.

ThePostGame runs down odds for former winners at the 2021 Open Championship.

The winner of the 2015 British Open, Zach Johnson, won’t be in the mix this year, as he had to withdraw after testing positive for COVID-19. But if you value championship experience, there are plenty of other former British Open winners to back this week.

Among the recent winners, Jordan Spieth (2017) has the most favorable prospects at +1800. Check out the prices on other former champs, including Phil Mickelson, and go to BetMGM for the most updated odds.

Rocket Mortgage Classic predictions, odds and PGA Tour picks

Feeling lucky this week? We’ve got some picks.

The PGA Tour returns to Detroit Golf Club as it hosts the third running of the Rocket Mortgage Classic. Bryson DeChambeau returns as the defending champion and 2021 betting favorite. Below, we look at the 2021 Rocket Mortgage Classic odds and make our PGA Tour picks and predictions to win.

Detroit Golf Club measures 7,370 yards and plays to a par of 72. The Donald Ross design puts an emphasis on accuracy off the tee on the front nine, but the back nine is considerably more open and allows for plenty of scoring opportunities.

The two previous events have seen rather different fields and leaderboards. The inaugural 2019 tournament was won by Nate Lashley with Doc Redman as the runner-up. Last year’s edition was one of the Tour’s first events back from the COVID-19 pandemic with DeChambeau winning over Matthew Wolff.

Odds provided by BetMGM; access USA TODAY Sports’ betting odds for a full list. Lines last updated Monday at 12:10 p.m. ET.

Favorite

Will Zalatoris (+2500)

Zalatoris, 24, is 15th in the Golfweek/Sagarin world rankings but remains in need of a win for full PGA Tour status and eligibility for the FedExCup Playoffs.

His missed cut at the U.S. Open was just his second through 15 events in 2021. That and a prior missed cut at the Wells Fargo Championship, have boosted his odds for this week. He’s third in this field by the Golfweek rankings but shares the fifth-best odds to win as a quality value play.

Zalatoris has a runner-up finish at the Masters and three other top-10 finishes on the year, including a T-8 at the PGA Championship. He’s still averaging 1.51 Strokes Gained: Tee-to-Green and 1.00 SG: Approach per round for the 2020-21 season.

Contender

Doc Redman (+5500)

Redman has fallen to No. 131 in the Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR) with six missed cuts through 15 events this year, but he tied for second against a weaker field at the Palmetto Championship and for 61st at last week’s Travelers Championship.

Course history is on his side with his runner-up finish in 2019 and a T-21 in the stronger field last year.

His approach game has been sharp this season, and he has been better with the putter of late. He also averaged 1.23 SG: Around-the-Green per round at the Palmetto as a considerable improvement on the weakest part of his game.

Long shot

Mackenzie Hughes (+15000)

Hughes tied for 76th last week following his Sunday collapse and T-15 finish at the U.S. Open. He lost a woeful 0.84 strokes per round off the tee last week; however, he remained strong around the greens and has been one of the Tour’s most consistent putters this season.

He didn’t play this event last year after a T-21 finish in 2019. He averaged 1.26 SG: Tee-to-Green and 0.84 SG: Approach per round in that appearance.

Mainly, this number is far too high for someone who was recently in the top 50 of the OWGR and has begun showing signs of old form after a stretch of five straight missed cuts.

2021 Masters Picks: Placings, groups and first-round leader

Check out Masters Tournament betting odds for placings, groups and first-round leader at Augusta National.

[mm-video type=playlist id=01es6rjnsp3c84zkm6 player_id=none image=https://golfweek.usatoday.com/wp-content/plugins/mm-video/images/playlist-icon.png]

The Masters Tournament begins Thursday at Augusta National Golf Club. We continue poring over the odds and lines at BetMGM Sportsbook while searching for the best value bets. Below, we look at the odds and lines for 2021 Masters placings, groups and first-round leader and make our PGA Tour picks and predictions.

Dustin Johnson is back to defend his 2020 title from the fall. He’s No. 2 in the Golfweek/Sagarin world rankings while looking to be the first back-to-back Masters champ since Tiger Woods in 2001 and 2002. Woods, the 2019 Masters champion, isn’t playing this year after he was involved in a single-vehicle accident in late February.

Augusta National is expected to play considerably tougher this week than it did in the fall when Johnson won by 5 strokes at a record of 20-under par.

2021 Masters picks: Placings

Odds provided by BetMGM; access USA TODAY Sports’ betting odds for a full list. Lines last updated Wednesday at 9:41 a.m. ET.

Top 5: Matt Kuchar (+1400)

Kuchar struggled upon the PGA Tour’s mid-June restart in 2020. He won the Asian Tour’s SMBC Singapore Open in January but had just one top-10 finish on American soil the rest of the year.

He recently resurfaced with a third-place finish at the WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play and followed it up with a T-12 at last week’s Valero Texas Open. The nine-time PGA Tour champ has three career top-5 finishes at Augusta National with the most recent being a T-4 in 2017.

Top 10: Francesco Molinari (+900)

Molinari missed the cut at the fall Masters following a career-best T-5 finish in 2019. The former Open Championship winner is better suited for the firm and fast conditions expected this week, and he showed glimpses of his old form early this year with a T-8 at The American Express and a T-10 at the Farmers Insurance Open.

2021 Masters picks: Top player

Top European: Matt Fitzpatrick (+1200)

There are plenty of betting options available for Fitzpatrick, who enters Masters Week with a Tour-best 2.56 strokes gained on the average pro per round over his last 20 rounds.

The 12-1 payout for Top European is the most profitable bet for the Englishman (outside of the +4500 odds for him to win), but he can also be backed as Top English (+400) and Top GB and Ireland (+650).

Top left hander: Robert MacIntyre (+400)

There are only five lefties participating in the 2021 Masters with 2012 and 2014 champ Bubba Watson the clear favorite at +200. There’s value on the Scotsman off an impressive run at the WGC-Match Play.

He can also be backed for Top Debutant (+275) and Top Scot (-150).

2021 Masters picks: First-round leader

Jon Rahm (+2000)

Rahm is seventh on the PGA Tour with a Round 1 scoring average of 69.00 through 10 events. That’s the same score with which he began each of his last two Masters appearances in the fall and in 2019.

Anecdotally, he and his wife, Kelley, welcomed a baby boy last weekend. It could be an added early boost for Golfweek’s top-ranked golfer.

Will Zalatoris (+5000)

Zalatoris is the favorite for the aforementioned Top Debutant group at +110. Golfweek’s ninth-ranked golfer already recorded two top-10 finishes in his rookie season on Tour. He’s in Thursday morning’s fifth group off the tee and will be hitting Augusta National in peak conditions.

2021 Masters Picks: First-round and 72-hole matchups

Check out the best bets for the 2021 Masters Tournament’s first round and 72-hole matchups.

[mm-video type=playlist id=01es6rjnsp3c84zkm6 player_id=none image=https://golfweek.usatoday.com/wp-content/plugins/mm-video/images/playlist-icon.png]

The Masters Tournament begins Thursday morning with the first group of Michael Thompson and Hudson Swafford going off the first tee at 8 a.m. ET. BetMGM Sportsbook has odds and lines for both Round 1 3-ball and 72-hole head-to-head matchups. Below, we look at the odds and lines for the top 2021 Masters matchups and make our PGA Tour picks and predictions.

The first-round matchups are assigned based on the groups for the first two rounds of the tournament, which were released Wednesday afternoon. Head-to-head matchups pair players of a similar world ranking, nationality or general intrigue.

Unlike in the first-ever fall Masters in mid-November, all 88 golfers in the field will hit their first shot off of the first tee. The customary format was altered in the fall to accommodate less daylight.

2021 Masters picks: Round 1 3-ball matchups

Odds provided by BetMGM; access USA TODAY Sports’ betting odds for a full list. Lines last updated Wednesday at 9:35 a.m. ET.

Michael Thompson (-125) vs. Hudson Swafford

Get some early action with the first pairing to hit Augusta National Golf Club in 2021 after the ceremonial opening tee shots. Thompson is 74th in the Golfweek/Sagarin world rankings and tied for 25th at the 2013 Masters.

Swafford is 357th in the rankings and missed the cut in his lone appearance here (2017).

Xander Schauffele vs. Jon Rahm (+150) vs. Rory McIlroy

Rahm enters the week at No. 1 in the Golfweek world rankings and fresh off the birth of his and his wife’s baby last weekend. He also started with an opening round of 3-under par, 69 in each of the last two runnings of the Masters.

McIlroy and Schauffele both missed the cut at The Players Championship.

Jordan Spieth vs. Cameron Smith (+225) vs. Collin Morikawa

There’s great value on Smith with the highest odds of this three-man group. The Aussie’s price is inflated against two high-profile American golfers. Both Spieth and Morikawa are major winners, but Smith has the better recent results at Augusta National with a T-5 in 2018 and T-2 in 2020.

Special Masters Betting Promotion!

2021 Masters picks: 72-hole head-to-head matchups

Bryson DeChambeau (-125) vs. Jordan Spieth

The most intriguing 72-hole matchup pits a pair of golfers who share the second-best odds to win the tournament. Spieth is fresh off a victory at the Valero Texas Open, but DeChambeau recently won the Arnold Palmer Invitational against a stronger field and tied for third at The Players the next week.

DeChambeau is sixth in the Golfweek rankings while Spieth is 33rd.

Play our new free daily Pick’em Challenge and win! Play now!

Dustin Johnson vs. Justin Thomas (-105)

Johnson and Thomas rank first and second, respectively, in the Official World Golf Ranking. While Johnson is the defending champ, his 2021 results have been largely unimpressive outside of a victory at the European Tour’s Saudi International in February.

Thomas has been in the better recent form with a victory against most of this week’s top competition at The Players. He’s worth backing as the more profitable play as Johnson attempts to be the first back-to-back Masters champ since Tiger Woods in 2001 and 2002.

2021 Valero Texas Open matchups, placings and first-round leader predictions

Check out prop bets for the PGA Tour’s 2021 Valero Texas Open.

[mm-video type=playlist id=01es6rjnsp3c84zkm6 player_id=none image=https://golfweek.usatoday.com/wp-content/plugins/mm-video/images/playlist-icon.png]

The Valero Texas Open is the final opportunity for PGA Tour pros to tune-up for the 2021 Masters Tournament, and is an opportunity for others to grab one of the final remaining invitations to Augusta National Golf Club. Below, we’ll look for the best value bets in the 2021 Valero Texas Open odds, with tournament matchups, placings and first-round leader PGA Tour picks and predictions.

TPC San Antonio hosts this tournament once again. Corey Conners, who’s 24th in the Golfweek/Sagarin world rankings, returns to defend his 2019 title after the 2020 tournament was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Jordan Spieth (+1200) is the pre-tournament betting favorite after Dustin Johnson withdrew Monday afternoon ahead of his Masters title defense.

Let’s look for some value bets, as this is typically one of the most wide-open events on the PGA Tour schedule with motivation being a question for many of the biggest names in the field each year.

2021 Valero Texas Open: Matchups

Odds provided by BetMGM; access USA TODAY Sports’ betting odds for a full list. Lines last updated Wednesday at 12:29 p.m. ET.

Jordan Spieth vs Tony Finau (-105)

Finau is a slight underdog in this tournament matchup despite being the top-ranked golfer in the field following Johnson’s exit. Spieth has more experience at TPC San Antonio, including a runner-up finish in 2015, but he has played here just once in the last four runnings with a T-30 finish in 2019.

Finau, who has four top-10 finishes in eight events this year, is the better of the two in Strokes Gained: Approach and SG: Off-the-Tee for the 2020-21 season.

Abraham Ancer vs. Corey Conners (-110)

This is an evenly-priced line between the reigning champ and Golfweek’s 23rd-ranked golfer. Conners has been in the better 2021 form with back-to-back top-10 finishes at the Arnold Palmer Invitational and The Players Championship.

His short game is also much improved from 2019 when he was top-three in the field in SG: Approach, SG: Off-the-Tee and SG: Tee-to-Green.

2021 Valero Texas Open: Placings

Top 5: Charley Hoffman (+650)

Hoffman ranks third in this field with 1.99 strokes gained on the field per round over 40 career rounds played at TPC San Antonio. He won in 2016 and was a runner-up in both 2011 and 2019.

He’s also still in need of a Masters invitation and will be among the most highly motivated this week.

Place your legal, online 2021 Valero Texas Open bets in CO, IA, IN, MI, NJ, PA, TN, VA and WV at BetMGM. Risk-free first bet! Terms and conditions apply. Bet now!

Top 10: Joel Dahmen (+600)

Dahmen wasn’t extended an invitation to the Masters following his win at last week’s Corales Puntacana Resort & Club Championship as it was an opposite-field event against much weaker competition than this.

Still, he’s in top form and has plenty of motivation. Get him for a 6-1 payout with a nine-place cushion against the stronger field.

2021 Valero Texas Open: First-round leader

Ryan Moore (+6600)

Moore is second to Conners in this field with 2.53 strokes gained per round at TPC San Antonio over 16 career rounds. He finished third in 2019, seventh in 2018 and T-18 in 2017.

He has missed the cut in four of six events this year, but largely due to erratic putting. He knows these greens well and has had success.

BetMGM has him priced at +6600 to win this event, meaning the House views him as just as likely to hold the 18-hole lead.

If you’re a sports betting enthusiast, you have been treated over the past two years as more and more states legalize online sports betting and it becomes more mainstream. As partnerships and acquisitions in the space continue to heat up, so do new product offerings being introduced.

Golf fans and, more specifically, golf bettors, you’re up for the next treat.

NBC Sports, the PGA Tour and PointsBet Sportsbook announced last week they will present the first-ever golf betting simulcast, which will debut around the Waste Management Phoenix Open next week.

The show, NBC Sports Edge BetCast, will air alongside NBC Sports’ telecast on Golf Channel and NBC, airing Thursday, Feb. 4 through Sunday, Feb. 7 at TPC Scottsdale’s Stadium Course. NBC Sports Edge BetCast will be available on Peacock Premium, providing a golf-betting, second-screen experience focused on betting odds and lines around the Waste Management Phoenix Open.

The show will be presented over 10 afternoon hours, covering 2 ½ hours in each of the tournament’s four rounds. The live studio will be overlooking the 16th hole.

“We are excited to debut this unique betting show with our partners at the PGA Tour and PointsBet,” said David Preschlack, President, NBC Sports Regional Networks, and Executive Vice President, Content Strategy, NBC Sports Group via a press release. “With TPC Scottsdale’s Stadium Course as the backdrop, we look forward to a compelling sports betting presentation on Peacock Premium as a companion to watching the world’s best golfers competing on some of the most iconic holes on the PGA Tour.”

For years during sports broadcasts, announcers generally danced around odds and sports betting in general. While important to a segment of their audience, it was generally considered taboo to speak of directly. While there have been some general references, the sports-betting community never felt it was enough. That changes moving forward.

Place your legal, online golf bets in CO, IA, IN, MI, NJ, PA, TN, VA and WV at BetMGM. New customer offer: Risk-free first bet! Terms and conditions apply. Bet now!

Sports bettors now have a show speaking their language and talking directly about betting opportunities, odds changes, probabilities and more throughout the event.

“The NBC Sports Edge BetCast stream on Peacock Premium is another step forward for our sports betting strategy,” said Norb Gambuzza, PGA Tour Senior Vice President, Media and Gaming. “We are extremely excited to produce and distribute specialized betting content as a companion to our linear and digital coverage with our partners at NBC Sports and PointsBet. As we continue to embrace sports betting, the Tour will continue to innovate and find new ways to engage fans around the world.”

Look for this type of experience to just be the tip of the iceberg of what’s to come. … not just in golf, but across all sports verticals.
