Kevin Durant opens up about why he left the Thunder

We should stop talking about this now.

It’s 2020. Kevin Durant left the Oklahoma City Thunder in 2016 to join the Golden State Warriors. Yet, even still, Durant’s departure from Oklahoma City remains one of the most talked about topics of conversation around the NBA.

Durant’s perception took a turn for the worse publicly when he left the Thunder. I don’t really feel like we have to go over why or what his reasoning was anymore.

But on the All The Smoke Podcast with Stephen Jackson and Matt Barnes, Durant opened up in detail about why he left the Thunder in the first place and it started with what was around him.

“I was tired of having to be the only guy that could make threes, make jump shots. Consistently make them. My mind was already thinking about ‘How can I develop my game?’ more so than the Warriors versus Thunder…I just wanted to keep developing my game.”

So that’s that on that — at least it should be.

He’s currently under contract with the Brooklyn Nets and won’t be going anywhere for the forseeable future. We shouldn’t have to talk about this anymore with Durant.

Report: Andrew Wiggins to make Warriors debut Saturday night vs. Lakers

Andrew Wiggins will try to start off his Golden State Warriors tenure with a bang as he faces off against the Los Angeles Lakers.

Former first overall pick Andrew Wiggins will make his debut with the Golden State Warriors on Saturday night, at 8:30 p.m EST on ABC, as the Warriors take on LeBron James and the Los Angeles Lakers at home (per The Athletic’s Anthony Slater). Wiggins was acquired by Golden State on Thursday — the day of the NBA’s trade deadline.

Averaging 22.4 points, 5.2 rebounds, 3.7 assists, 0.9 blocks and 0.7 steals per game in what’s been his best all-around season, Wiggins will get plenty opportunity to get comfortable in his new home arena as the Warriors are still without the superstar duo of Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson.

With Golden State (12-40) at the bottom of the Western Conference standing and the Lakers at the top (38-12), the Warriors likely aren’t expecting to win tonight, even if their new small forward was the 2015 Rookie of the Year.
However, Wiggins is notoriously known for stepping up his play whenever he faces LeBron — the player who orchestrated his trade out of Cleveland when he decided to return to the Cavaliers — so Golden State fans may see a strong performance from the highly-talented wing, which bodes well for his reception from his new teammates, coaching staff and the fanbase.

Last season, Wiggins averaged 31.0 points, 6.0 rebounds and 4.5 assists per game when he played against Golden State, so there’s already enough evidence in recent memory to suggest that the highly-talented wing will be able to have great performances against the best teams. Even though Warriors head coach Steve Kerr doesn’t need him to be a star, it’ll be a fine start to his Warriors tenure if he has one of those games against LeBron and company.

Lakers in San Francisco to face Warriors after Wiggins-Russell trade

The Golden State Warriors were one of the biggest movers of the trade deadline ahead of their game against the Los Angeles Lakers.

The Los Angeles Lakers will look to bounce back after being stunned at home by the Houston Rockets on Thursday night as they take a quick weekender up north to San Francisco to face off against the Golden State Warriors, who are themselves starting with a clean slate after a busy trade deadline.

The Warriors were involved in one of the biggest trades of the deadline, involving lottery picks future and past. The Warriors traded D’Angelo Russell to the Minnesota Timberwolves for Andrew Wiggins, a top-3 protected 2021 1st round pick and a 2021 2nd round pick. The Wolves also received Omari Spellman and Jacob Evans in the deal.

Warriors head coach Steve Kerr told reporters on Friday that there was a chance that Wiggins is in uniform for tonight’s game against LeBron James, Anthony Davis, and the Los Angeles Lakers, but that there are plenty of procedural hurdles to overcome before that can officially happen.

If Wiggins plays, that will add another level of intrigue to the game. For whatever reason, perhaps being traded to Minnesota for Kevin Love before ever playing a game with LeBron, Wiggins plays well above his career averages against James. In 10 games against LeBron, Wiggins is averaging 26 points, shooting 45% from the 3-point line and 54% from the field overall. However, Wiggins is only 1-9 against LeBron in those games.

Tonight’s game is also expected to feature various tributes and memorials to Kobe Bryant. The game will be televised nationally on ABC at 8:30 p.m. EST.

The D’Angelo Russell and Steph Curry backcourt experiment was cancelled before it could start

Could the Golden State Warriors trading D’Angelo Russell impact the return of Stephen Curry from his broken hand injury?

Since the arrival of D’Angelo Russell in San Francisco, outside of trade chatter, one question followed the Golden State Warriors’ new guard everywhere he went.

How would Russell fit with Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson? There were hurdles to jump before that question could be answered. Thompson dealing with a knee injury paused any chance of the two playing together, but before the 2019-20 season started, Curry and Russell were slated to be Golden State’s starting guard tandem.

Finding how Russell would play off the ball next to Curry became the focus at the start of the Warriors’ new season. Yet, again injuries disrupted things for Golden State’s new backcourt.

Curry has missed all but four games for Golden State with a broken hand injury, nixing any chance the point guard duo had at building any type of on-court chemistry.

However, as the season grew, and Curry progressed through his rehab, there was hope the two would get an opportunity to play together. Reports indicated Curry could potentially return in March, giving him and Russell around 20 games together before the season ended.

Could Russell’s game be elevated by playing next to another All-Star like Curry? How would Curry play next to another guard of Russell’s skillset? Appealing questions that were set to be answered in March.

Yet, a trade sent Russell, Jacob Evans III and Omari Spellman from Golden State to the Minnesota Timberwolves in exchange for Andrew Wiggins and draft pick compensation. Golden State’s move before the trade deadline officially canceled the Russell and Curry backcourt experiment before it began.

Outside of knocking off the rust, Curry playing alongside Russell was a key factor in his return. How the two would play together would help evaluators find what features the team needed to put around Curry, Thompson and Draymond Green to find a way back to contention.

On the surface, it looks like Wiggins can click into the Warriors rotation, where there were serious questions about Russell’s fit. With that off the table, Golden State could now be even more patient with Curry’s injury.

Instead of an All-Star cast, the Warriors roster is now filled with young or developmental players outside of Green, Wiggins and Kevon Looney.

With next year’s hope of returning to the top of the Western Conference hinging on the health of Curry, the Warriors could continue to be cautious with his return. Whether that’s a dose of load management or postponing his recovery to a later date.

The Warriors record sitting at the bottom of the Western Conference and their leading scorer now playing for the Minnesota Timberwolves, all arrows point to the offseason for Golden State. How the team handles the return from injury of their two-time Most Valuable Player now becomes the most intriguing mark in an otherwise down season.

Prediction

Lakers 125, Warriors 107

Moneyline (ML)

The Lakers are huge favorites in this game at home at -1112. They are 17-7 at home, while the Warriors (+700) are only 5-23 on the road. The Lakers are at full strength and the Warriors are one of the worst teams in the league.

Take a hard PASS on the money line. The Warriors would need a miracle to beat a Lakers team at full strength and betting on the Lakers isn’t worth the wager.

New to sports betting? A $10 wager on the Lakers returns a profit of $0.90.

Line/Against the Spread (ATS)

The Lakers are big favorites at -14.5 (-106). Los Angeles is 14-12 ATS on the road this season. Golden State is 11-13 ATS at home. With a big spread like this, it is a tough pick either way. However, the Warriors no longer have DeAngelo Russell after trading him to the Timberwolves and now have to work Andrew Wiggins into their offense, while Draymond Green might miss tonight’s game. This looks like a blowout. Take the Lakers and give up the points at -14.5 (-106).

Over/Under (O/U)

The total is set at 223.5 for the game. Lakers games go Over more often than not on the road, as they are 14-12 O/U away from Staples Center. Golden State is 10-14 O/U at home. However, with perhaps no Green in the lineup, the Warriors defense will not be able to keep the Lakers from putting up big points.

Expect the Lakers to score in the 120s, so the Warriors just have to get to 100, something they have failed to do only once in the last six games.

Take the OVER (-106).

Warriors to memorialize Kobe, Gianna Bryant and other victims during Lakers game

Golden State Warriors to memorialize Kobe, Gianna Bryant and other victims of the January 26 helicopter crash just outside Los Angeles during the Lakers game tonight at the Chase Center.

The Golden State Warriors plan to memorialize Kobe Bryant, his daughter Gianna as well as the others who lost their lives in the tragic helicopter crash when LeBron and the Los Angeles Lakers visit the Chase Center tonight. The Warriors have not played a home game since the accident occurred on January 26 and will be using tonight’s game to honor the lives we lost along with what Kobe meant to NBA.

According to Monte Pool of NBC Sports Bay Area, there will be special t-shirts and a video tribute during the game on Saturday. The Chase Center in San Francisco will also be lighting up the exterior of the building in the purple and gold of Bryant’s Lakers.

Wes Goldberg of the Mercury News shared a picture of the shirts that will be left on the seats for each of the fans in attendance. Those shirts include Kobe’s No. 8 and No. 24 along with Gianna’s No. 2. During his career, Bryant played in 67 games against the Warriors and averaged 27 points, 5.2 rebounds and 4.7 assists. Golden State head coach Steve Kerr spoke with NBC Sports Bay Area recently about Kobe’s legacy.

“Michael Jordan brought it every single night, and that’s what Kobe did,” said Kerr, a former Chicago Bulls teammate of Jordan according to NBC Sports Bay Area. “He brought it every single night and never took a game off. And did things that were superhuman. Even at the NBA level, in a league full of these incredible athletes, he stood out.”

Steve Kerr on D’Angelo Russell with Warriors: ‘you can rightfully question the fit’

Steve Kerr told media that D’Angelo Russell’s fit with the Warriors was questionable from the moment they signed him in the offseason.

From the moment D’Angelo Russell arrived in Golden State, there were questions surrounding how he fit in Steve Kerr’s rotation.

Over the past five years, Golden State has been spoiled with one of the best backcourts in the NBA that included both Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson, adding another guard to that tandem — even if he’s an All-Star caliber talent like Russell, could create a logjam.

However, injuries to Thompson and Curry halted the Warriors All-Star backcourt trio experiment before it could even begin.

For the first time since the trade deadline, the Warriors’ head coach spoke to the Media, and Kerr brought up the unconventional fit of Russell in Golden State’s backcourt.

Well, I think to be perfectly blunt, the fit was questionable when we signed him, but nobody questioned that — when you already have Steph and Klay, and you add a ball-dominant guard, you can rightfully question the fit,

With there being doubt about his ability to share a backcourt with Curry and Thompson from the start, Kerr told reporters at Friday’s practice that his fit was one of the reasons Russell’s name was regularly involved in trade rumors.

It was one of the reasons the trade rumors started before the season even began, and I think D’Angelo understood that when he signed the contract and our organization understood that as well — the trade ended up happening, I think we at least got a 50 game look at what it might look like of course that kind of went awry when Steph got injured, but you get a good enough look to picture how the positional fit goes, and I think we have an idea that the other player makes more sense and in this case,

With Russell now in Minnesota, Kerr will turn his focus on building his new backcourt while Thompson and Curry are still rehabbing. Golden State’s guard combinations will take on a youth movement with Ky Bowman, Jordan Poole, Damion Lee and Zach Norvell Jr. taking over a substantial share of minutes until Curry returns.

Report: Golden State signing Marquese Chriss to two-year deal

The Golden State Warriors now have 13 players on their roster.

Per ESPN’s Bobby Marks, the Golden State Warriors are signing power forward Marquese Chriss to a two-year contract. Chriss initially signed to a one-year contract with the Warriors in September and waived shortly before being signed to a Two Way contract in January.

He’s appeared in 47 games for Golden State this season.

Now in his fourth year in the league, Chriss has averaged 7.9 points, 5.4 rebounds, 1.7 assists and 1.0 block per game this season while shooting a career-high 51.8 percent from the field. Chriss finds himself being added to one of what were five open roster spots, with the Warriors also signing wings Ky Bowman, Juan Toscano-Anderson and Zach Norvell Jr. to deals after the passing of the trade deadline.

Chriss’ signing should be one of the last for the Warriors for some time, with Golden State now near at the allotted minimum number of players (14) on the roster; they have 13. However, the team now has no Two Way players after adding Chriss and Bowman, another of their former Two Way players, onto the regular season roster.

KD: ‘It didn’t matter” if OKC won 2016 WCF, he was still joining Dubs

Kevin Durant joined Matt Barnes and Stephen Jackson on the latest episode of All The Smoke to discuss his decision to leave the Thunder.

It sounds like Kevin Durant was destined to leave Oklahoma City one way or the other.

Durant famously left the Thunder to join Golden State following the 2016 season. The move caused a lot of animosity between Durant and Russell Westbrook, as well as between Durant and the Oklahoma City fans, something that has yet to be fully resolved almost four years later.

In the most recent episode of SHOWTIME Basketball’s All The Smoke, Durant joined former teammate Matt Barnes and Stephen Jackson to discuss the decision to leave and how it started long before the Warriors beat Oklahoma City in the Western Conference Finals.

“My mind was already thinking about how can I develop my game more so than the Warriors vs. Thunder, that rivalry. Like, even if it was a rivalry, I didn’t give a f–k — I just wanted to keep developing my game, you know what I’m saying,” asked Durant. “They’re a new fresh team, they’re on the rise. I f–k with them.

So me going there, it didn’t matter if [the Thunder] would have won or lost the series. I wanted to play there and live in The Bay.”

Durant spent three seasons with Golden State, winning back-to-back NBA Championships with the Warriors in 2017 and 2018 before tearing his Achilles during the 2019 Finals against Toronto. The Raptors went on to win the series 4-2.

Although he joined the Brooklyn Nets during free agency, Durant is still working back from his Achilles injury.

He’s continued to take shots at Oklahoma City, as well as some of his former teammates, in interviews and on social media.

In September he called his return to Chesapeake Energy Arena a “toxic environment”, and recently got into a Twitter feud with former Thunder teammate, Kendrick Perkins, over Perkins calling Russell Westbrook the “best to ever put on an Oklahoma City Thunder uniform”.

Report: Warriors signing Zach Norvell to 10-day contract

The Golden State Warriors need to replace plenty of perimeter shooters and Zach Norvell Jr. is a legitimate option for filling in one of those spots.

According to The Athletic’s Anthony Slater, the Golden State Warriors are signing 6’5” guard Zach Norvell to a 10-day contract. Norvell, who went undrafted in the 2019 NBA Draft, played two games with the Los Angeles Lakers this season before being waived in December.

The Gonzaga product now plays for the NBA G League’s South Bay Lakers, where he’s averaging 15.2 points, 4.5 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 0.9 steals per game while shooting 40.6 percent from the field and 39.6 percent from three (on 7.5 three-point attempts per game).

Norvell is undoubtedly a three-point threat after shooting 37.0 percent from deep in both years he spent at Gonzaga. However, he’s also an under-control player who does well attacking closeouts while displaying a nice handle and solid passing ability as well.

The Chicago native could legitimately earn a roster spot with the injury-depleted Warriors. Golden State has four open roster spots after trading away five players (D’Angelo Russell, Jacob Evans, Omari Spellman, Alec Burks and Glenn Robinson III) before Thursday’s trade deadline and could use Norvell’s skillset in their effort to replace what they lost by trading away their four best perimeter shooters.

Within the next 10 days, the Warriors will face the Lakers, Miami Heat and Phoenix Suns.
