Notre Dame football: 11 offensive coordinators candidates to replace Gerad Parker

Who do you want to be Notre Dame’s next offensive coordinator?

Paint it any way you want it, but Notre Dame football landed great news on Monday.  Offensive coordinator Gerad Parker was named Troy’s new head coach.

No, it’s not ideal that Notre Dame will now be on their third offensive play caller in the past four seasons, but its a spot the Irish coaching staff could upgrade and now they’re forced to.

Reports are out from various outlets that Marcus Freeman has his eyes on a certain external candidate.  Who exactly that is may be remains to be seen.  And just because Freeman may have his eye on someone doesn’t mean that its all a race for one guy.

So who are some names to keep an eye on in regards to Notre Dame’s next offensive coordinator?  We’ve compiled 11.

Fox Sports makes Notre Dame error on graphic – fans respond

That’s not Marcus Freeman…

This weekend will be one of the biggest on the college football schedule for 2023 as there will matchups between ranked opponents all day.  The main event for Notre Dame fans is of course Saturday night when the Irish play host to Ohio State.

The Fox Sports College Football social media account posted a graphic to get excited about this weekend’s games and asked which of the big games was most likely to see an upset.  The graphic featured the opponents names and ranks as well as a photo of each team’s head coach.

Well, everyone’s head coach except for one team: Notre Dame.

As most people can probably tell, whether they’re big college football fans or not, that’s clearly not Marcus Freeman in the Notre Dame polo.  Instead its Fighting Irish quarterbacks coach Gino Guidugli.

As you can probably expect, Notre Dame fans were rather surprised to see the error and called the Fox Sports team out for it.  Check out some of the responses below:

Notre Dame football: 2023 coaching staff tracker

More movement on June 20…

Although it was anticipated to be a much slower off-season in terms of news for Notre Dame after Marcus Freeman’s first full year on the job, plenty of changes to the coaching staff have occurred.  It started with a famed graduate assistant returning to the Big Ten university he starred at as a player and quickly snowballed into a national search for a new offensive coordinator and much more.

As we count down the days until Notre Dame football officially gets going this fall, we look back at the departures and arrivals to Notre Dame’s coaching staff.

Notre Dame offers 2025 quarterback

Did Gino find his top man for 2025?

A next Notre Dame quarterback of the future?  It’s early but quarterbacks coach [autotag]Gino Guidugli[/autotag] extended an offer to 2025 prospect [autotag]Blake Hebert[/autotag].  Hebert checks in at 6-3, 215-pounds and is a product of Lawrence Central Catholic in Massachusetts.

On3 is high on Hebert who they rank as the 65th overall player nationally and sixth quarterback.  Meanwhile his offer list is that of an extremely talented player as Clemson, Penn State, Auburn, and Nebraska are just a few to have extended an offer.

Hebert has a Notre Dame connection as his teammate from last season [autotag]Preston Zinter[/autotag] is an incoming freshman linebacker for 2023.

Hebert is the seventh quarterback Notre Dame has offered in the 2025 class.

Report: Notre Dame to host 2025 Mississippi quarterback

The Irish will host one of the top 2025 signal callers later this month

You can never have enough good quarterback prospects on your roster and [autotag]Notre Dame[/autotag] is finally starting to join in that trend.

In previous years, the Irish had only one legit option before the position got dicey, just look back at last year. Although that might be the case once again this coming season after Tyler Buchner transferred out, head coach [autotag]Marcus Freeman[/autotag] doesn’t want that situation going forward even with Sam Hartman’s greatness.

Although Kenny Minchey is just a true freshman, he’s got a lot of talent. The 2024 class has CJ Carr, one of the best in the country. For the 2025 class, there is no current commit but there are plenty of high level options like Mississippi’s [autotag]Deuce Knight[/autotag].

The 6-foot, 4-inch and 190 pound lefty signal caller really likes what Freeman and quarterback coach [autotag]Gino Guidugli[/autotag] are selling. In a report by 247Sports Steve Wiltfong, Knight told him that both “are good people, they are doing some good things up there with the program and offense and I just want to get up there around those people again because I had a great time last time I was up there.”

Knight was referring to returning to South Bend, with according to the report will be on June 10th. The Mississippi quarterback released his top 10, the Irish being included. Expect Notre Dame to continue the full court press on Knight during his visit and beyond.

Watch: New Notre Dame quarterback coach Gino Guidugli coaching his group

Sounds like a fun time with coach Guidugli

When [autotag]Notre Dame[/autotag] hired Gino Guidugli, it was seen as a very good hire for [autotag]Marcus Freeman[/autotag]. The former Cincinnati quarterback made a seamless transition into coaching following his playing career.

Although he started as a running backs coach with Central Michigan, once he got back to his quarterback roots, Guidugli took off. In the span of three seasons, he went from passing game coordinator to offensive coordinator.

After following [autotag]Luke Fickell[/autotag] to Wisconsin, Guidugli just couldn’t stay away from coaching quarterbacks as he was set to be the tight end and passing game coordinator for the Badgers. Their loss was Notre Dame’s gain and it looks to be a big one.

Guidugli was mic’d up for today’s spring practice and it was great to see how he interacts with the players. Check it out for yourself below.

New Notre Dame QB Sam Hartman comments on Tommy Rees leaving

Moving on

One of the biggest factors when transfer quarterback [autotag]Sam Hartman[/autotag] made his decision to join the [autotag]Notre Dame[/autotag] football team was offensive coordinator [autotag]Tommy Rees[/autotag].

We all know what has transpired, Rees left for Alabama and Hartman will now have [autotag]Gerad Parker[/autotag] calling the plays and [autotag]Gino Guidugli[/autotag] as his quarterback coach.

Hartman recently met with the media and was asked about Rees departure from the program. His answer didn’t seem like he was happy about the situation, especially considering that the transfer portal window had closed when the former Irish quarterback left for the Crimson Tide. Hartman told the media “it is what it is,” and the group will move forward without Rees.

Report: Notre Dame football has found it’s next quarterbacks coach

The Irish have found their QB coach

When [autotag]Tommy Rees[/autotag] left [autotag]Notre Dame[/autotag] for Alabama, not only did the Irish lose their offensive coordinator but also their quarterbacks coach.

Not many have pondered who would fill that hole, especially since the offensive coordinator position has much brighter lights associated with it. Well, according to a report by ESPN’s Pete Thamel, [autotag]Marcus Freeman[/autotag] has found new quarterback coach, [autotag]Gino Guidugli[/autotag].

You many recognize his name. He played for Cincinnati in the early 2000s, and he was very impressive in his Bearcat career. Guidugli is the all-time leader in Cincy history for passing and total offense.

After his NFL career, he went into coaching, starting as the running back coach as Central Michigan before returning to his alma mater in the same capacity. Guidugli rose through the ranks, going from running backs coach to quarterbacks coach to passing game coordinator. In the last position, he called plays for the Bearcats.

The Irish poached him from Wisconsin, where he followed [autotag]Luke Fickell[/autotag] to earlier this offseason. Freeman and Guidugli were on Fickell’s staff, so the relationship between the two is extensive.
