UFC Denver fight card loses two more bouts

The UFC’s return to Denver continues to take a beating.

The bad luck continues for the UFC as its summer schedule continues to be pelted by fighter withdrawals.

Most recently, the UFC on ESPN 59 event on July 13 at Ball Arena in Denver has absorbed the brunt of the blow. One day after news surfaced its main event between Maycee Barber and Rose Namajunas was canceled (with Tracy Cortez now stepping in), two undercard fights have also been pulled.

The welterweight bout between [autotag]Mike Malott[/autotag] and [autotag]Gilbert Urbina[/autotag] has been canceled altogether (first reported by TSN). Additionally, [autotag]MarQuel Mederos[/autotag] is out, and the promotion seeks a replacement to fight [autotag]Nazim Sadykhov[/autotag] (first reported by Octagon Update).

Two people with knowledge of the changes recently confirmed them to MMA Junkie but asked to remain anonymous as the promotion has yet to make an official announcement.

Malott (10-2-1 MMA, 3-1 UFC) later posted a video to social media in which he said Urbina (7-3 MMA, 1-2 UFC) withdrew from the fight. Malott said he had previously sustained an injury, so he elected to pass on a replacement opponent.

It’s still unclear why Mederos (9-1 MMA, 1-0 UFC) withdrew from the fight vs. Sadykhov (9-1-1 MMA, 2-0 UFC).

With the changes, the UFC on ESPN 59 in Denver includes:

  • Rose Namajunas vs. Tracy Cortez
  • Gabriel Bonfim vs. Ange Loosa
  • Santiago Ponzinibbio vs. Muslim Salikhov
  • Mariya Agapova vs. Luana Santos
  • Viviane Araujo vs. Jasmine Jasudavicius
  • Julian Erosa vs. Christian Rodriguez
  • Josh Fremd vs. Andre Petroski
  • Nazim Sadykhov vs. TBA

Gilbert Urbina says TKO win over Orion Cosce was real UFC debut, not TUF 29 finale loss

Gilbert Urbina is counting his TKO win over Orion Cosce as his real UFC debut.

LAS VEGAS – [autotag]Gilbert Urbina[/autotag] thinks he finally showed UFC fans what he’s made of.

The UFC welterweight picked up a nasty, body kick TKO finish at Saturday’s UFC Fight Night 224, putting away Orion Cosce in the second-round of their contest. It was his second fight in the UFC, but Urbina (7-2 MMA, 1-1 UFC) is counting it as his first.

“This was my UFC debut,” Urbina said at the UFC Fight Night 224 post-fight press conference. “I fought the TUF (29) finale on 10 days’ notice. I wouldn’t count that as a UFC debut. It was a weight class above me. But this is my UFC debut at 170 pounds and man, it feels pretty good. It feels pretty good.”

Along with the good, Urbina felt he made some mistakes against Cosce (8-2 MMA, 1-2 UFC). He’s not 100 percent happy with his performance and knows there’s room to grow.

“It feels really good like I said, but I know there’s a lot more work to be done,” Urbina explained. “Like I said, I went in there and I showed a lot of good things and a couple of bad things, but it’s only up from here. I’m really focused and just blessed to be here in this environment at the UFC Apex and I can’t wait to show some more.”

You can watch Urbina’s full scrum in the video above.

UFC Fight Night 224 video: Gilbert Urbina breaks down Orion Cosce for first octagon win

Gilbert Urbina looked better than ever in his first octagon win.

[autotag]Gilbert Urbina[/autotag] looked better than ever in his first octagon win.

Urbina (7-2 MMA, 1-1 UFC) stopped Orion Cosce (8-2 MMA, 1-2 UFC) by second-round TKO in their welterweight bout at UFC Fight Night 224 at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas.

Urbina looked fast and sharp right off the bat, almost finishing Cosce in Round 1. Cosce survived the round, but held onto his ribs as he walked over to his corner. Urbina took note of that and it was a front kick to the ribs which folded Cosce, followed by a knee which led to the TKO finish at the 2:55 mark of Round 2 (via Twitter):

After dropping his UFC debut to Bryan Battle in the Season 29 “Ultimate Fighter Finale,” Urbina scored his first octagon win.
