Peter King: Panthers ‘on deck’ in Germany

Peter King of NBC Sports thinks the Panthers will be “hosting” a game in Germany next season.

Will the Carolina Panthers be substituting their barbecue for bratwurst some time next year? Peter King of NBC Sports thinks so.

In his latest edition of “Football Morning in America,” King—who was on hand for this weekend’s trip to Munich—seems to get the feeling that the Panthers will finally get their shot to “host” a game in Germany.

He writes:

Germany will host one game next year, and it figures to be the Panthers—the only one of the four original NFL teams to declare Germany as a global-rights country that hasn’t been scheduled for a game here—giving up one of six non-division games in Charlotte. Dallas and Kansas City are on the Panthers’ home slate but seem unlikely to play here next year; Carolina wouldn’t want to give up a Cowboys or KC home game. That’d leave the Giants, Chargers, or the NFC West or AFC North foes who finish in a like place to Carolina in the ’23 standings. I went to a Panthers-sponsored cornhole tournament with Steve Smith in the house on Saturday, and the fans there believe they’re the chosen team for Munich next fall.

Actually, it could very well be the Chiefs who make the trip with them. A report back in May from Max Schrader of German newspaper Bild, one which would later be confirmed by Joe Person of The Athletic, noted that the Panthers will be taking on the Super Bowl LVII champions for a 2024 matchup in Deutschland.

The Panthers and the Chiefs, who are fresh off a 21-14 victory in Munich over the Miami Dolphins, are two of four teams that have been granted marketing, fan engagement and commercialization access in Germany as part of the NFL’s International Home Marketing Area plan. They are joined by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, who made a victorious trek against the Seattle Seahawks in 2022, and the New England Patriots, who will be headed over this upcoming week to take on the Indianapolis Colts.

Chiefs S Mike Edwards explains decision to lateral ball on fumble recovery vs. Dolphins

Chiefs S Mike Edwards explains his decision to lateral the ball on fumble recovery

The Kansas City Chiefs had plenty of big moments in their 21-14 victory over the Miami Dolphins in Frankfurt, Germany. The defense stood tall for most of the game, especially during a turning point play in the first half.

The scoop fumble return for a touchdown from safety Bryan Cook extended the lead to three scores and was set up by the punch out from Trent McDuffie. The scoop part, however, was by Mike Edwards, who had the presence of mind to lateral the ball back to Cook to run 59 yards for the score. Edwards spoke about the fantastic takeaway and decision to lateral during the run-back in his postgame press conference.

“So once I got it, I felt Tyreek (Hill) on my ankle,” He explained. “So I was about to get tackled. And I was like, Nah, we gotta get this home, we got to do something else. So I looked back, and I seen my boy BC (Bryan Cook). And I was like, I trust him. You gotta have trust to do some stuff like that, but I trusted him. I just pushed it back, and he did the rest.”

The highlight play is not standard in the league, as coaches typically would prefer the defenders in a turnover scenario not to put the ball at risk. Edwards comedically addressed whether or not this was an authorized action.

“Yeah, we got a touchdown out of it,” said Edwards with a smile. “It better be good.”

The score at the end of the half stalled a promising drive and served as the difference in the game as the Chiefs held on by a touchdown.

WATCH: Andy Reid delivers remarks after Chiefs’ win vs. Dolphins in Germany

Andy Reid shared a brief message with his team after the #Chiefs’ win over the #Dolphins in Week 9.

Andy Reid isn’t known for seeking out attention from the media, but after putting together a winning game plan against the Miami Dolphins in Week 9, the Kansas City Chiefs head coach had cameras on him in the locker room.

He delivered a message to his team after their bounce-back win in Frankfurt, Germany, and made it clear that the resounding victory over one of the AFC’s top teams was only the beginning of Kansas City’s plans.

The energy in the locker room was palpable when Reid let out his signature “How about those…” line, and Patrick Mahomes even got in on the action when the coach’s comments were over.

The Chiefs will get a brief respite before their next game; a Super Bowl LVII rematch against the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 11. With any luck, Kansas City will be able to hear Reid get fired up again after a win over his former team on November 20.

The Chiefs got back into the win column on Sunday with a big win over the Dolphins on Sunday. K.C.’s offense found the endzone twice in the first half and the defense added a touchdown to create a 21-0 halftime lead. The second half was a bit of a different story as the Chiefs’ offense went ice-cold and didn’t score another point.

The defense began to tire out as the Dolphins found some momentum, but it buckled down on the final drive and secured the victory. K.C.’s defense held Miami’s explosive offense to 14 points and Tua Tagovailoa to under 200 passing yards. Former Chief Tyreek Hill was held in check with under eight yards per catch and no touchdowns.

Here are the latest Chiefs stories on this edition of Chiefs Check-in for the morning of Monday, November 6:

Chiefs became first NFL team to win in U.S., England, Mexico, and Germany with victory vs. Dolphins

The #Chiefs became the first NFL team to win in England, Mexico, Germany, and the U.S. with their victory over the #Dolphins in Week 9.

The Kansas City Chiefs made history on Sunday with their Week 9 win over the Miami Dolphins in Frankfurt, Germany. Kansas City now stands alone as the only NFL team to win games in England, Mexico, and Germany.

The defending Super Bowl champions can now be considered a truly worldwide sensation with their latest win, which won’t soon be forgotten by fans who witnessed the remarkable victory play out on Sunday morning.

This outstanding achievement is yet another feather in the franchise’s cap as they seek to win their third Super Bowl of the Patrick Mahomes era later in the 2023 season.

Few teams in NFL history have ever been as dominant as Kansas City has been since Mahomes took over under center back in 2018, and their success on the international stage is yet another indicator that their winning formula is built to last, even when the team isn’t playing at Arrowhead Stadium.

WATCH: Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes connects with Jerick McKinnon for TD vs. Dolphins

Patrick Mahomes hit Jerick McKinnon for a touchdown to give the #Chiefs a 14 point lead over the #Dolphins in Frankfurt, Germany.

Patrick Mahomes has fought through adversity to give the Kansas City Chiefs a two-touchdown lead over the Miami Dolphins in Week 9. He connected with running back Jerick McKinnon for a six-point score late in the second quarter of the Chiefs’ international matchup against the Dolphins in Frankfurt, Germany to widen Kansas City’s advantage.

The touchdown came after a long drive where Mahomes and the Chiefs’ offense trudged downfield against Miami’s stout defense. With just over two minutes remaining in the first half, the reigning MVP hit McKinnon in stride with space to scamper into the end zone.

The Dolphins will receive the second-half kickoff, so this score was necessary to help Kansas City maintain its advantage through halftime. The Chiefs defense would stand strong on Miami’s next offensive drive and gave Kansas City an even larger lead following a Tyreek Hill fumble that resulted in yet another touchdown for the home team.

LOOK: Chiefs WR Rashee Rice to wear swanky custom cleats vs. Dolphins

Rashee Rice will wear swanky custom cleats for the #Chiefs’ international matchup against the #Dolphins in Germany.

The Kansas City Chiefs’ receiving corps will look to bounce back against the Miami Dolphins in Week 9 after laying an egg against the Denver Broncos. Rookie wideout Rashee Rice is expected to play a major role in Kansas City’s offense in the Chiefs’ international matchup in Germany on Sunday and will sport some swanky custom cleats for the occasion.

The footwear features motifs of both the American and German flags and is sure to be a hit with the audience attending the highly anticipated matchup in Frankfurt.

Though the cleats themselves may not give Rice an edge over his opponents on the gridiron, he will certainly look good running his routes in them as Kansas City attempts to secure their seventh win of the 2023 season.

With any luck, Rice may be able to win over an international audience with his new boots and set career highs in receiving yards and touchdowns to lift the Chiefs to victory.

Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes wants to play in 2028 Summer Olympics

Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes wants to play in the 2028 Summer Olympics

The accolades and honors garnered by Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes over his NFL career have him destined for a sport in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. He is still in his twenties with more amazing moments ahead of him as the Chiefs attempt to repeat this season as Super Bowl champions.

The Chiefs arrived in Germany a few days before their matchup on Sunday against the Miami Dolphins. Mahomes spoke with a large media contingent during his press conference to discuss the possibility of him participating in the new flag football event during the 2028 Summer Olympic Games in Los Angeles.

“Oh, I definitely want to, but I’ve seen some of those guys play the flag football, and they’re a little faster than I am. And there’s not like a lot of there’s not like lineman blocking for you.” said Mahomes, “So I’ll be 31, 32 years old. So if I can still move around, then I’m gonna try to get out there and throw the football around. Maybe in LA, just don’t tell Coach (Andy) Reid or (Brett) Veach or anybody.”

Flag Football is set to debut in the Summer Olympics in 2028, creating another exciting avenue for football players. Mahomes playing in the Olympics is unlikely, but it would be interesting to see his highlight plays on the world’s biggest sports stage.

How the Chiefs should gameplan for Week 9 vs. Dolphins

How can the Kansas City #Chiefs come away with a Week 9 victory over the Miami Dolphins?

In Week 9 the Kansas City Chiefs and Miami Dolphins travel to Germany for an AFC heavyweight matchup.

The Chiefs are coming off an upset loss to the Denver Broncos, which featured one of the worst offensive performances during quarterback Patrick Mahomes’ tenure. Kansas City’s offense has not played at the level that we have been accustomed to over the past several years and it has become a legitimate concern for the team heading into the second half of the season.

After a flat performance in a loss to the Philadelphia Eagles two weeks ago, the Dolphins bounced back with a dominant win over the New England Patriots last week. Miami’s offense has been on a historic pace this season, leading the NFL in passing, rushing, and points per game. The Dolphins are striving for their first AFC East division title since 2008.

Check out our offseason report on the Dolphins, where you’ll find information about their offseason moves and key players. Now, let’s see what it will take for the Chiefs to come away victorious.

Chiefs TE Travis Kelce addressed a specific Taylor Swift question in Germany

Chiefs TE Travis Kelce addressed a specific Taylor Swift question in Germany

The Travis Kelce domination at tight end this season continues despite missing the first week. He leads the league in major categories for the position and remains quarterback Patrick Mahomes’ primary target.

Kelce has noticeably seen an increase in production on the field when his special guest, Taylor Swift, is in attendance. The Chiefs are undefeated in the games she’s watched from the suites, and it had reporters asking about her whereabouts in Germany after Friday’s practice.

“You know what I think when I mentioned, or everybody knows that she’s at the game, the Vegas, like the over-under on my catches, kind of goes through up and down the spread goes up and down. So, you know I don’t want to mess with any of that stuff, so I’m just gonna keep it to myself.”

The betting odds on Swift’s attendance affecting his play wasn’t the only pressing question from the press conference as a reporter asked about the couple’s current status.

“I got to see her last week,” said Kelce with a smile, “That’s the latest status. I’m gonna keep my personal relationship personal.”
