Former Oklahoma and current Dallas Cowboys DT Gerald McCoy suffered an apparent leg injury during practice on Monday, per NFL’s Ian Rapoport.

The six-time Pro Bowler has dealt with a handful of injuries throughout his career, including a knee injury toward the end of the 2014 season.

He spent the first nine seasons of his career in Tampa Bay before being released in May 2019. He was signed by the Carolina Panthers two weeks later.

He enjoyed a resurgent season in Carolina, racking up 37 tackles and 5 sacks. He also played in all 16 games for the first time since 2013.

On March 31, McCoy signed a three-year deal with the Cowboys.

McCoy recorded 83 tackles, 33 TFL and 14.5 sacks while at OU from 2007-09. He was drafted with the third overall pick of the 2010 draft. He was joined in the top four by OU teammates Sam Bradford and Trent Williams.

The Dallas Cowboys finally got back to work on Friday, opening practice for the first time since the end of the 2019 season. On Monday, the team went out for their first foray into padded practices, and unfortunately it looks like there is already some level of attrition.

The seriousness of the injury is yet to be known, but NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport is reporting free-agent signing defensive tackle Gerald McCoy went down with an apparent leg injury.

Cowboys media has been silenced during practice, but after news has emerged from the national side of things, a second source has confirmed.

Cowboys Wire will update with more information about the severity once practice concludes and those in attendance can shed more light on the situation.

McCoy was signed to plug the hole vacated when Maliek Collins went to the Las Vegas Raiders to reunite with defensive coach Rod Marinelli.

The 10-year veteran has 59.5 career sacks and is seen as a key figure in the remaking of the defensive line. He was signed after nine seasons in Tampa Bay and last year with the Carolina Panthers. Along with NT Dontari Poe, DE Aldon Smith and third-round draft pick Neville Gallimore (Oklahoma),  McCoy was expected to rejuvenate the interior of Dallas’ pass rush.

Report: Buccaneers expected to sign former Panthers DT Kyle Love

According to a report by Greg Auman at the Athlet.ic, the Buccaneers are expected to sign former Panthers defensive tackle Kyle Love.

According to a report by Greg Auman at the Athletic, the Buccaneers are expected to sign former Panthers defensive tackle Kyle Love, who passed his physical. Love has played 115 games regular season games in his NFL career, split between several teams.

He spent the last six years in Carolina, where he totaled 9.5 sacks, 22 quarterback hits and 11 tackles for a loss in a backup role.

While Love has never been a star (he hasn’t made one Pro Bowl), he has always offered quality reserve play for every team he’s suited up for.

Tampa already had a loaded interior line with Ndamukong Suh and Vita Vea projected to start. Adding Love just makes them a little bit deeper on the inside.

Love was one of several former Panthers players who it makes sense to bring back for 2020. On the bright side, Ross Cockrell backed out on the Giants, so he’s still available.

Tyrone Crawford activated from PUP, on 1st-team DL with Aldon Smith

The Cowboys unveiled personnel changes and debuted new faces along their defensive line at the first practice of training camp on Friday.

Football is back. Granted, guys are wearing shorts and no pads. There are pop-up tents next to the field for cold popsicles and Gatorade breaks. Most of the hitting is being done on tackling dummies; quarterbacks are wearing bright red jerseys so they don’t get touched at all.

But no matter. The Dallas Football Cowboys are officially back at work.

Friday’s first team practice gave assembled media members an early look at the 2020 roster, and the first glimpse of a revamped defensive line that bore little resemblance to the 2019 unit.

Tyrone Crawford played sparingly last season and was ultimately shelved by hip injuries after just three tackles in four games. Today, he was back on the practice field, having passed his physical and being activated from the Active/Physically Unable to Perform list.

With newly-acquired Dontari Poe still nursing a quad injury, Crawford reportedly got in some work at Poe’s defensive tackle slot next to Gerald McCoy.

That shuffling left an opening opposite DeMarcus Lawrence at defensive end. Aldon Smith, welcome back to the NFL.

Reinstated after nearly five full years out of the league, Smith, a former first-round draft pick, reportedly looked very good in Friday’s session, taking first-team reps, batting a Dak Prescott pass into the air, and almost coming away with the interception.

Everson Griffen, signed late Wednesday, still needs to pass two consecutive COVID tests before he can join his new teammates on the practice field. That could happen early next week.

It’s a lot of new faces for just one position group. It can only help that most of the Cowboys players are living at the hotel right next door to the practice facility.

We don’t have a long training camp,” Lawrence said, according to NFL Network’s Jane Slater, explaining that the impromptu players’ bubble was a team decision. “Need to make sure we get that commitment and friendship and chemistry.”

Lawrence maintains that five hours of practice per day isn’t sufficient for proper team-building with the new guys. But for Cowboys fans everywhere, the fact that the players are even back at practice at all is welcome news indeed.

And along the Dallas defensive line, there is new and improved hope for something good. Maybe very, very good.

Cowboys News: Best yet to come for Amari, DiNucci report, what no preseason means

A look around the Cowboys’ landscape as the NFL demands face masks for fans and cancels the chance for unheralded players to make a mark.

Coming on the heels of the NFL cancelling the entire preseason, the league has deemed fans will be required to wear some sort of face mask before they are allowed into each stadium. This is assuming that there will even be fans at the games, and that certainly could change. This unique offseason presents new barriers for almost every team in the league, however, teams like the Dallas Cowboys, with a stable of new coaches and players, will face extra challenges as the season gets off to a quick start.

Despite the extraordinary circumstances the Cowboys currently face, they’ll still have to suit up and perform every Sunday. The offense is mostly set, aside from the backup wide receivers, and the intriguing position battles that will take place at left guard and center. We know Amari Cooper is great, but could more weapons and another year in the system allow him to get even better? Two new, big-name, defensive tackles should improve the other side of the ball, but how much impact will the additions make? Plus, a list of under-the-radar remains free agents that Dallas could potentially sign.

Prescott, Lamb, McCarthy among Cowboys primed for strong 2020, say oddsmakers

An online sportsbook has released odds for end-of-season awards, naming several Cowboys as having favorable odds in their categories.

Football fans looking to put their money where their mouths are should probably start with the biggest gamble of them all right now: namely, whether there will even be a 2020 NFL season. Assuming the league moves forward and finds a way to play some semblance of a season, though, there will be plenty to wager on for those so inclined.

Even for those who don’t have monetary skin in the game, though, looking at the official odds has always been a way to gauge who’s favored to do what come gameday. And Cowboys fans itching for a sneak peek at how some of their guys will do in 2020 may find a good deal of encouragement in the latest set of numbers.

The sportsbook BetOnline has released odds on the league’s end-of-year awards, and the Cowboys are well-represented, an indicator that those in the know are projecting potentially strong campaigns from several Dallas notables.

In the regular season MVP race, quarterback Dak Prescott currently has the third-best odds to bring home the hardware. Only Patrick Mahomes and Lamar Jackson are more likely to be named the league’s Most Valuable Player, according to the site. Prescott is tied with Kyler Murray, Russell Wilson, and Tom Brady. Argue over the exact figures there, but that’s fine company for the Dallas passer to find himself in, and could point to the likelihood of a stellar season.

Carolina’s Christian McCaffrey is the first non-quarterback on the list, at 14th. Cowboys star Ezekiel Elliott is the fourth non-passer ranked, with the 26th-best odds overall. Among running backs, Elliott is behind McCaffrey, Derrick Henry (21), and Saquon Barkley (25).

DeMarcus Lawrence finds himself 13th on the list of candidates to win Defensive Player of the Year, with the same odds as Minnesota’s Danielle Hunter. Other Cowboys defenders listed with odds to win the award are Jaylon Smith (32), Aldon Smith (35), Leighton Vander Esch (37), and Gerald McCoy (67).

For those curious, recently-departed Byron Jones sits 27th. Current wish-list players Jadeveon Clowney and Jamal Adams are 14th and 19th, respectively.

Defensive Rookie of the Year? There are fifteen names ahead of Trevon Diggs. But, speaking to the promise of the Cowboys’ defensive rookie class of 2020 as a whole, Bradlee Anae and Neville Gallimore are also given DRoY odds; they rank 37th and 45th.

CeeDee Lamb holds the No. 7 spot among Offensive Rookie of the Year candidates and is the highest-ranking wide receiver on the list. He beats out Henry Ruggs III and Jerry Jeudy, both of whom were drafted ahead of Lamb in April.

Comeback Player of the Year is always a fascinating one. In 2019, Titans quarterback Ryan Tannehill was named the award’s recipient, despite the astonishing return of Cowboys center Travis Frederick, who had spent the previous year battling a rare neurological disorder that left him barely able to walk. For the 2020 season, new Cowboys defensive end Aldon Smith is listed 10th by the oddsmakers, behind names like Ben Roethlisberger, Rob Gronkowski, Cam Newton, Nick Foles, and JJ Watt. Interestingly, the new backup passer in Dallas, Andy Dalton, is ranked 13th.

Mike McCarthy is given the second-best odds of winning 2020’s Coach of the Year award, behind Bill Belichick and Bruce Arians, currently tied with the best chances. If he does go on to win the honor, McCarthy would be the second Cowboys coach to earn the title in the past five years; Jason Garrett won Coach of the Year in 2016.

Cowboys News: Looking ahead to free agency 2021, predictions for 2020

Also in the news, Adrian Peterson complains about RB pay, Dez Bryant reacts to Cam Newton’s signing, and forecasting the Cowboys’ WR4.

It’s just weeks before the start of training camp, and there are so many questions the Dallas Cowboys and the NFL as a whole are facing. Some believe the season will take place, but a modified version- fewer games, no preseason, or some other change- seems increasingly likely.

If the coaching staff turnover is factored in, the Cowboys’ roster has certainly changed more this offseason than in recent years. The lack of in-person offseason programs doesn’t do them any favors, but all teams are having to adjust.
